  • Chart Filtering

    - by Tim Dexter
Interesting question from a colleague this week. Can you add a filter to a chart to just show a specific set of data? In an RTF template, you need to do a little finagling in the chart definition. In an online template, a couple of clicks and you're done. RTF Build your chart as you would normally to include all the data to start with. Now flip to the Advanced tab to see the code behind the chart. Its not very pretty but with a little effort you can get it looking a little more friendly. Here's my chart showing employees and their salaries. <Graph depthAngle="50" depthRadius="8" seriesEffect="SE_AUTO_GRADIENT"> <LegendArea visible="true"/>  <Title text="Executive Department Only" visible="true" horizontalAlignment="CENTER"/>  <LocalGridData colCount="{count(.//G_2)}" rowCount="1">   <RowLabels>    <Label>SALARY</Label>   </RowLabels>   <ColLabels>    <xsl:for-each select=".//G_2">     <Label><xsl:value-of select="EMP_NAME"/></Label>    </xsl:for-each>   </ColLabels>   <DataValues>    <RowData>     <xsl:for-each select=".//G_2">      <Cell><xsl:value-of select="SALARY"/></Cell>     </xsl:for-each>    </RowData>   </DataValues>  </LocalGridData> </Graph> Note the emboldened text. Its currently grabbing all values in the G_2 level of the data. We can use an XPATH expression to filter the data to the set we want to see. In my case I want to only see the employees that are in the Executive department. My  data is structured thus:   <DATA_DS>     <G_1>         <DEPARTMENT_NAME>Accounting</DEPARTMENT_NAME>         <G_2>             <MANAGER>Higgins</MANAGER>             <EMPLOYEE_ID>206</EMPLOYEE_ID>             <HIRE_DATE>2002-06-07T00:00:00.000-04:00</HIRE_DATE>             <SALARY>8300</SALARY>             <JOB_TITLE>Public Accountant</JOB_TITLE>             <PARAS>11000</PARAS>             <EMP_NAME>William Gietz</EMP_NAME>         </G_2> So the XPATH expression Im going to use to limit the data to the Executive department would be .//G_2[../DEPARTMENT_NAME='Executive'] Note the ../ moves the parser up the XML tree to be able to test the DEPARTMENT_NAME value. I added this XPATH expression to the three instances that need it ColCount, ColLabels and RowData. Its simple enough to do. Testing your XPATH expression is easier to do using a table of data. Please note, as soon as you make changes to the chart code. Going back to the Builder tab, you'll find that everything is grayed out. I recommend you make all the changes you can via the chart dialog before updating the code. Online Template Implementing the filter is much simpler, there is a dialog box to help you out. Add you chart and fill out the various data points you want to show. then hit the Filter item in the ribbon above the chart. That will pop the filter dialog box where you can then add a filter to the chart.   You can add multiple filters if needed and of course you can use the Manage Filters button to re-open and edit the filters. Pretty straightforward stuff!

  • Chart controls for ASP.NET

    - by tolism7
I am looking people's opinion and experience on using chart controls within an ASP.NET application (web forms or MVC) primarily but also in any kind of project. I am currently doing my research and I have a pretty big list of controls to evaluate. My list includes (in no particular order): ASP.NET controls: DevExpress XtraCharts (http://demos.devexpress.com/XtraChartsDemos/) Dundas Chart for .NET (http://www.dundas.com/) Telerik RadChart for ASP.NET AJAX (http://www.telerik.com/) ComponentArt Charting & Visualization for ASP.NET (http://www.componentart.com/) Infragistics WebChart (http://www.infragistics.com/dotnet/netadvantage/aspnet.aspx#Overview) .net Charting (http://www.dotnetcharting.com/) Chart Control for .Net Framework (Microsoft's) (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/11/24/new-asp-net-charting-control-lt-asp-chart-runat-quot-server-quot-gt.aspx) Flash controls: FusionCharts v3 (http://www.fusioncharts.com/) XML/SWF Charts (http://www.maani.us/xml%5Fcharts/index.php) amCharts (http://www.amcharts.com/) AnyChart (http://www.anychart.com/home/) Javascript: Flot (http://code.google.com/p/flot/) Flotr (http://solutoire.com/flotr/) jqPlot (http://www.jqplot.com/index.php) (If I missed some that worth to be compared against the above please let me know.) What I am looking is opinions on using any of the above so I can form my own and help others do the same, based on what I read here. I do not care which one is better. What I care for is why someone likes one of the above and what do these controls offer as a distinct advantage. I am interested in developer's opinion and I would like to find out which things are difficult doing with any of the above controls and which things are easy to achieve. AJAX compatibility (build in to the controls but also manual), ASP.NET compatibility, input capabilities, data binding options, performance, how much code does one need to write in order to create a chart, are some of the things that I would want to read about. I have already done my research on StackOverflow for relevant questions but there is nothing on the level of detail that I would want to read in order to make a responsible decision.

  • Render User Controls and call their Page_Load

    - by David Murdoch
The following code will not work because the controls (page1, page2, page3) require that their "Page_Load" event gets called. using System; using System.IO; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using iTextSharp.text; using iTextSharp.text.html.simpleparser; using iTextSharp.text.pdf; public partial class utilities_getPDF : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { // add user controls to the page AddContentControl("controls/page1"); AddContentControl("controls/page2"); AddContentControl("controls/page3"); // set up the response to download the rendered PDF... Response.ContentType = "application/pdf"; Response.ContentEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8; Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=FileName.pdf"); Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache); // get the rendered HTML of the page System.IO.StringWriter stringWrite = new StringWriter(); System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter htmlWrite = new HtmlTextWriter(stringWrite); this.Render(htmlWrite); StringReader reader = new StringReader(stringWrite.ToString()); // write the PDF to the OutputStream... Document doc = new Document(PageSize.A4); HTMLWorker parser = new HTMLWorker(doc); PdfWriter.GetInstance(doc, Response.OutputStream); doc.Open(); parser.Parse(reader); doc.Close(); } // the parts are probably irrelevant to the question... private const string contentPage = "~/includes/{0}.ascx"; private void AddContentControl(string page) { content.Controls.Add(myLoadControl(page)); } private Control myLoadControl(string page) { return TemplateControl.LoadControl(string.Format(contentPage, page)); } } So my question is: How can I get the controls HTML?

  • Dynamic controls not creating with RSS reader function

    - by TuxMeister
Hello, I am working on a test project for an RSS reader. I am using Chilkat's module for .NET 3.5. What I am trying to do is this: For each item in the RSS feed, I want to dynamically create some controls (labels) that contain stuff like the title, the link and the publication date. The problem is that only the first control comes up "rssTitle", but not the rest and it's definitely not creating the rest, nor cycling through the RSS items. Any ideas where I'm wrong in my code? Imports Chilkat Public Class Form1 Dim rss As New Chilkat.Rss Dim success As Boolean Dim rssTitle As New Label Dim rssLink As New Label Dim rssPubDate As New Label Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click success = rss.DownloadRss("http://www.engadget.com/rss.xml") If success <> True Then MessageBox.Show(rss.LastErrorText) Exit Sub End If Dim rssChannel As Chilkat.Rss rssChannel = rss.GetChannel(0) If rssChannel Is Nothing Then MessageBox.Show("No channel found.") Exit Sub End If Dim numItems As Long numItems = rssChannel.NumItems Dim i As Long For i = 0 To numItems - 1 Dim rssItem As Chilkat.Rss rssItem = rssChannel.GetItem(i) Me.Controls.Add(rssTitle) With rssTitle .Name = "rssTitle" & Me.Controls.Count.ToString + 1 .Text = "Title: " & rssItem.GetString("title") .Left = 12 .Top = 12 End With Me.Controls.Add(rssLink) With rssLink .Name = "rssLink" & Me.Controls.Count.ToString + 1 .Text = "Link: " & rssItem.GetString("link") .Left = 12 .Top = 12 End With Me.Controls.Add(rssPubDate) With rssPubDate .Name = "rssPubDate" & Me.Controls.Count.ToString + 1 .Text = "Pub date: " & rssItem.GetString("pubDate") .Left = 12 .Top = 12 End With Next End Sub End Class I'm grateful for any help. Thanks!

  • ASP .NET confusion - server controls

    - by Brandi
I have read through the information in this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22084/asp-net-aspxxx-controls-versus-standard-html but am still rather confused. The situation was I was asked to do a web project where I made a wizard. When I was done with the project everyone asked why I had used an <asp:Wizard...>. I thought this was what was being asked for, but apparently not, so after this I was led to believe that server controls were just prototyping tools. However, the next project I did my DB queries through C# code-behind and loaded the results via html. I was then asked why I had not used a gridview and a dataset. Does anyone have a list of pros and cons why they would choose to use specific html controls over specific server controls and why? I guess I'm looking for a list... what server controls are okay to use and why? EDIT: I guess this question is open ended, so I'll clarify a few more specific questions... Is it okay to use very simple controls such as asp:Label or do these just end up wasting space? It seems like it would be difficult to access html in the code behind otherwise. Are there a few controls that should just never be used? Does anyone have a good resource that will show me pros and cons of each control?

  • Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings. The user can then save a "snapshot" of this chart, which persists its appearance and data to a record in a database. From another page, users can view these saved chart snapshots. • Working Qt controls in a 3d environment

    - by Jay
I need some advice from a Qt expert. The background: I have a 3D engine (ogre3d) working in concert with Qt. The 3D Content is displayed in a widget (using a custom OS window in the client area). I'm able to overlay arbitrary Qt widgets onto the 3d world using the widget render() method and a shared bitmap. This makes a great "heads up display". I can use the standard Qt style sheets and animation using this technique. My goal I'd like to go a step further and allow the user to move these rendered widgets using the mouse. I'd like some advice on the best way to implement this. Possible solutions: The widgets in the HUD are not part of the inheritance chain. I render them manually. They don't get events though. I could add them to the inheritance chain so they get events in the usual way. Then I would need to change them to render to my shared bitmap instead of to the operating system. I looked at this once but couldn't find enough information to implement it. Capture mouse events in the 3D display widget and EMIT them to child controls. I basically create my own event handling chain. Any suggestions on how to implement this? I'm also considering switching to Qt5. I'm not sure how that might affect this decision.

  • CommandBinding broken in inner Custom Control when nesting two Custom Controls of the same type.

    - by Fredrik Eriksson
    I've done a Custom Control in form of a GroupBox but with an extra header which purpose is to hold a button or a stackpanel with buttons at the other side. I've added the a Dependency Property to hold the extra header and I've connected the customized template. Everything works fine until I put one of these controls in another one. Now the wierd stuff begins(at least in my eyes xP), the command binding in the inner control simply isn't set. I tried to use Snoop to gather some data, the see if the inherits is broken and when I clicked on the buttons which isn't doing what I want it to, boom, breakpoint triggered. So in some wierd way the Command isn't set until something that I don't know what it is, happens, which snoops triggers. I've also tried to put the buttons in the regular Header property and that works fine, but not with my own made. I could just switch places with them to make it like I want but now I'm curious to know where the problem lies... Now I wonder, what can I've missed? The control class: public class TwoHeaderedGroupBox : GroupBox { static TwoHeaderedGroupBox() { DefaultStyleKeyProperty.OverrideMetadata(typeof(TwoHeaderedGroupBox), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(typeof(TwoHeaderedGroupBox))); } public static DependencyProperty HeaderTwoProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("HeaderTwo", typeof(object), typeof(TwoHeaderedGroupBox), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata()); public object HeaderTwo { get { return (object)GetValue(HeaderTwoProperty); } set { SetValue(HeaderTwoProperty, value);} } } And here is the Template (which by the way is created by blend from the beginning): <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Controls:TwoHeaderedGroupBox}"> <Grid SnapsToDevicePixels="true"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="6"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="6"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/> <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/> <RowDefinition Height="*"/> <RowDefinition Height="6"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Border BorderBrush="Transparent" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" Grid.ColumnSpan="4" Grid.Column="0" CornerRadius="4" Grid.Row="1" Grid.RowSpan="3"/> <Border x:Name="Header" Grid.Column="1" Padding="3,1,3,0" Grid.Row="0" Grid.RowSpan="2" VerticalAlignment="Center"> <ContentControl Content="{TemplateBinding Header}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/> </Border> <ContentPresenter Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Grid.Column="1" Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}" Grid.Row="2" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/> <Border BorderBrush="White" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Grid.ColumnSpan="4" CornerRadius="4" Grid.Row="1" Grid.RowSpan="3"> <Border.OpacityMask> <MultiBinding ConverterParameter="7" Converter="{StaticResource BorderGapMaskConverter}"> <Binding ElementName="Header" Path="ActualWidth"/> <Binding Path="ActualWidth" RelativeSource="{RelativeSource Self}"/> <Binding Path="ActualHeight" RelativeSource="{RelativeSource Self}"/> </MultiBinding> </Border.OpacityMask> <Border BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="3"> <Border BorderBrush="White" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="2"/> </Border> </Border> <Border x:Name="HeaderTwo" Grid.Column="2" Padding="3,5,3,5" Grid.Row="0" Grid.RowSpan="2" HorizontalAlignment="Right"> <ContentControl Content="{TemplateBinding HeaderTwo}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" DataContext="{TemplateBinding DataContext}"/> </Border> </Grid> </ControlTemplate>

  • How create a fullscreen view of a group of controls, that belongs to a tabpage

    - by voodoomsr
Hi all, i would like to know what is the correct way to create a fullscreen view of a tabpage control. This page has other controls, and that controls has various events that are subscribed. I was trying creating a new fullscreen form and copy all controls of the tabs to that form, but with this approach i need to resubscribe every control to the corresponding handler. If i only add the references the subscription remains but when the fullscreen form is close also the referenced copied controls are lost.

  • Allow IExtenderProvider control to attach to controls on a UserControl

    - by Justin
VB.NET 2.0 Framework I developed a control that implements IExtenderProvider in order to attach to controls and display a form for translating of the text of that control. This works great on regular controls on the form but the IExtenderProvider is not attaching to controls on UserControls, which makes sense. Is it possible to modify the UserControls or my IExtenderProvider control to enable it to attach to controls on a UserControl? Thanks!

  • What's the thought behind Children and Controls properties in WPF?

    - by Mathias Lykkegaard Lorenzen
I don't know if this should go on Programmers, but I thought it was relevant here. Being a skilled WPF programmer myself, I often wonder what people were thinking when they designed WPF in terms of naming conventions. Why would you sometimes have a property called Children for accessing the children of the control, and then sometimes have an equivalent property, just called Controls instead? What were they thinking here? Another example is the Popup control. Instead of a Content property, it has a Child property. Why would you do that? To me that's just confusing. So I'm wondering if there's a logical reason for it, which would probably also help me understand what the properties are called next time I need to do some speed-programming. If there's no reason behind it, then all I can say is WAT.

  • jwplayer embedded with recent flash with html5 back end cant hide controls or add autoplay and loop

I can get the file to show up on my page, but it's big and heavy. I would like for it to be just the video, no controls. Autoplay and on loop. Can you help me out? Here's the code... <div id="container">Loading the player ...</div> jwplayer("container").setup({ flashplayer: "jwplayer/player.swf", file: "Video/fernando.m4v", height: 520, width: 780, }); <script type='text/javascript' src='swfobject.js'></script>

  • Cross Theaded Calls - Many controls Heavy GUI Application after .net 1.1 2.0 upgrade- best way ??

    - by keepsmilinyaar
I have recently upgraded a .net1.1 solution to .net2.0. AS this is a very heavy GUI appilcation with loads of controls and many multithreaded operations that update the GUI. While these operations worked seamlessly in .net1.1 it is throwing up Cross Threaded Illegal operations after the upgrade. Considering the fact that tehre are numerous grids, buttons and status labels that need to be updated via these multi threaded operations, I decided to code for checking the InvokeRequired solution, however doing that for every control would probably not be the best way to go about it. I was wondering if you could suggest a better way of how I can go about it or propose any OOPS based class structure that I could code around to make the code look better. Please do let me know if my question is unclear. Thanks in advance

  • Recommendations for C# controls that can be used to create a hierarchical list of prioritised items?

    - by Mendokusai
I need to be able to display and edit a hierarchical list of tasks in a C# app. It can either be a Windows form app, or ASP.NET. Basically, I want similar behaviour to the way Microsoft Project handles tasks. The control would need to: 1) Maintain a list of items made up of several fields 2) Each item can have a number of children (at least 3 levels of nesting) 3) It needs to be very easy to change the parents/children of an item 4) It needs to be very easy to edit the fields (as fast as changing cells in Excel) 5) It needs to be very easy to reorder the items by dragging and dropping or cut and paste 6) If I can easily connect the control to a database, even better Anyone got any recommendations for controls for me to look at?

  • How do I create custom Controls for my VS2005 toolbox?

    - by end-user
Ok, this question might more about design theory. I have successfully created controls that show up in my toolbox, so I'm pretty sure I have the process right. Also, my "AutoToolboxPopulate" is set to true, so things are showing up as I create them. My question is this: I'm sub-classing a native Control for specialized use. When I derive my class from an exposed concrete class, such as BulletedList, my custom Control appears in my Toolbox. However, when I drop it back to the parent, such as ListControl, my Control is not listed (actually it's grayed out when I "List All"). What am I missing?

  • Access Master Page Controls II

    - by Bunch
Here is another way to access master page controls. This way has a bit less coding then my previous post on the subject. The scenario would be that you have a master page with a few navigation buttons at the top for users to navigate the app. After a button is clicked the corresponding aspx page would load in the ContentPlaceHolder. To make it easier for the users to see what page they are on I wanted the clicked navigation button to change color. This would be a quick visual for the user and is useful when inevitably they are interrupted with something else and cannot get back to what they were doing for a little while. Anyway the code is something like this. Master page: <body>     <form id="form1" runat="server">     <div id="header">     <asp:Panel ID="Panel1" runat="server" CssClass="panelHeader" Width="100%">        <center>            <label style="font-size: large; color: White;">Test Application</label>        </center>       <asp:Button ID="btnPage1" runat="server" Text="Page1" PostBackUrl="~/Page1.aspx" CssClass="navButton"/>       <asp:Button ID="btnPage2" runat="server" Text="Page2" PostBackUrl="~/Page2.aspx" CssClass="navButton"/>       <br />     </asp:Panel>     <br />     </div>     <div>         <asp:scriptmanager ID="Scriptmanager1" runat="server"></asp:scriptmanager>         <asp:ContentPlaceHolder id="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server">         </asp:ContentPlaceHolder>     </div>     </form> </body> Page 1: VB Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load     Dim clickedButton As Button = Master.FindControl("btnPage1")     clickedButton.CssClass = "navButtonClicked" End Sub CSharp protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) {     Button clickedButton;     clickedButton = (Button)Master.FindControl("btnPage1");     clickedButton.CssClass = "navButtonClicked"; } CSS: .navButton {     background-color: White;     border: 1px #4e667d solid;     color: #2275a7;     display: inline;     line-height: 1.35em;     text-decoration: none;     white-space: nowrap;     width: 100px;     text-align: center;     margin-bottom: 10px;     margin-left: 5px;     height: 30px; } .navButtonClicked {     background-color:#FFFF86;     border: 1px #4e667d solid;     color: #2275a7;     display: inline;     line-height: 1.35em;     text-decoration: none;     white-space: nowrap;     width: 100px;     text-align: center;     margin-bottom: 10px;     margin-left: 5px;     height: 30px; } The idea is pretty simple, use FindControl for the master page in the page load of your aspx page. In the example I changed the CssClass for the aspx page's corresponding button to navButtonClicked which has a different background-color and makes the clicked button stand out.
