• Change location of RSS Dynamic Desktops

  I'm currently using CCleaner to take care of my computer, but I also have a dynamic desktop background provided by Bing (I'm running Windows 7 HP) - and unfortunately the two conflict. Whenever I 'clean' my computer using CCleaner it messes up my destop backgrounds as they are stored in the temporary internet files directory, and for some reason I don't appear to be able to get as far as the 'Enclosures' sub directory in order to tell CCleaner to exclude the directory (I can see it in Windows Explorer but not in CCleaner's directory browser). Therefore, I am looking for an alternative solution to this problem and wondered if I could change the directory to which the images were downloaded on the RSS feed. If anybody knows how to do this, I would be grateful if you could share or indeed, I would be equally as greatful if anyone knows any other ways of getting around CCleaner. Please note that I don't want to stop cleaning the whole of my temporary internet files though - I just don't want the wallpapers that have been downloaded to be deleted... Thanks in advance!

• unit/integration testing web service proxy client

  I'm rewriting a PHP client/proxy library that provides an interface to a SOAP-based .Net webservice, and in the process I want to add some unit and integration tests so future modifications are less risky. The work the library I'm working on performs is to marshall the calls to the web service and do a little reorganizing of the responses to present a slightly more -object-oriented interface to the underlying service. Since this library is little else than a thin layer on top of web service calls, my basic assumption is that I'll really be writing integration tests more than unit tests - for example, I don't see any reason to mock away the web service - the work that's performed by the code I'm working on is very light; it's almost passing the response from the service right back to its consumer. Most of the calls are basic CRUD operations: CreateRole(), CreateUser(), DeleteUser(), FindUser(), &ct. I'll be starting from a known database state - the system I'm using for these tests is isolated for testing purposes, so the results will be more or less predictable. My question is this: is it natural to use web service calls to confirm the results of operations within the tests and to reset the state of the application within the scope of each test? Here's an example: One test might be createUserReturnsValidUserId() and might go like this: public function createUserReturnsValidUserId() { // we're assuming a global connection to the service $newUserId = $client->CreateUser("user1"); assertNotNull($newUserId); assertNotNull($client->FindUser($newUserId); $client->deleteUser($newUserId); } So I'm creating a user, making sure I get an ID back and that it represents a user in the system, and then cleaning up after myself (so that later tests don't rely on the success or failure of this test w/r/t the number of users in the system, for example). However this still seems pretty fragile - lots of dependencies and opportunities for tests to fail and effect the results of later tests, which I definitely want to avoid. Am I missing some options of ways to decouple these tests from the system under test, or is this really the best I can do? I think this is a fairly general unit/integration testing question, but if it matters I'm using PHPUnit for the testing framework.

• Is it common for a development position to be extremely mundane and not challenging at all? [closed]

  Hi guys so I am working at this company as a web developer but after 1 week of working here, I realize the stuff I am doing seem to be very easy stuff compared to what my peers who have been around for longer are doing. I am way ahead of my schedule and finish my projects early but it's because the work is not at all hard or problem solving involved. So I am puzzled why I would be thanked over doing such menial tasks. Is this normal? This is driving me nuts, I ask to be given more work and I do get it and still finish it quickly and accurately. Now I am having this paranoia that they are just conspiring to use me for a short period of time and terminate me. Am I going too far with this? I keep losing sleep over this. On days when I have a full load of work to complete, this uneasiness goes away but so far I feel like I am not being allowed to pursue what I thought I would do like solving and designing solutions. A lot of it doesn't require any thinking, just cleaning up other people's code and closing bug tickets.

• Problem Installing Ubuntu 12.04 - [Errno 5]

  I'm trying to intall Ubuntu 12.04 to my brand new eBay purchased hard drive. Only got the drive today and already it's causing me problems. The seller is a proper proffesional company with 99.9% positive feedback, so it seems unlikely they would have sold me something rubbish. My old hard drive packed up last Tuesday and so i bought a new one to replace it. Because this was an entirely new drive i decided to install Ubuntu as there was no current operating system. My computer is an eMachines EM250 netbook. There's no disc drive so i am installing from a USB stick. The new operating system loads beautifully, and the desktop appears just as it should. When i click install i am taken to the installer which copies the files to about 35% and then displays this: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. The hard drive can be heard constantly crackling. When i booted Ubuntu 12.04 from my old faulty hard drive as a test, i didn't even make it past the purple Ubuntu screen, so it can't be that bad. Any ideas? Message to the moderators. Please do not close this thread.   I'm still working on my window cleaning game from one of my previous questions I marked a contribution as my answer, but after all this time I can't get it to work and I have to many questions about this so I decided to ask some more about it. As a sequel on my mentioned previous question, my question to you is: How can I check whether or not a bitmapData contains non transparent pixels? Subquestion: Is this possible when the masked image is a movieclip? Shouldn't I use graphics instead? Information I have: A dirtywindow movieclip on the bottom layer and a clean window movieclip on layer 2(mc1) on the layer above. To hide the top layer(the dirty window) I assign a mask to it. • Exchange Server Contact Categories - How to Remove/Update All

  I've been tasked with cleaning up our companies contact database sitting on our Exchange Server 2003. The rub is this database of contacts has been neglected for the past couple of years and is now a bit messy. My issue is I have say a person named 'Bob Smith', and Bob is listed in multiple categories, 'Students' and 'Student'. I would really like to remove the 'Student' category from Bob and anyone else out there that has the same category. My question is, is there an easy way to edit the master category lists for contacts on the exchange server? I feel like I am missing something simple here since if I were playing with the categories that I use, to say organize email its very easy to do so, but I can't seem to find the proper way to do it for categories that are up on the server. I'm attempting to work through Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003. Any insight would be very helpful as I really don't want to change 8000+ contacts by hand.

• Problem installing drivers for Brother DCP-1400

  I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ...   Been trying to install ubuntu on my Samsung NB30 netbook, but I have been running into the same error over and over again. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. I'm installing from the USB bootable version, I get the exact same error at the exact same point when trying to install both ubuntu desktop and ubuntu desktop remix. I've tried redownloading both ISOs twice and I've tried two different USB sticks (one being completely new). I've tried installing from with in an ubuntu live session and I get the exact same problem. I've ran a bootable memtest and everything passes with no errors, I've also ran a dmesg in terminal after the installer fails here's what it reported - http://bit.ly/exAQRR Thanks in advance! EDIT: I know this was ages ago, but to anyone out there with the same issue, the problem turned out to be the downloaded image, my internet is poor at the best of times and the ISO failed the MD5sum check, if this happens to you I recommend you download the ISO image by torrent, it'll check the integrity of the file is maintained.

• A network share folder is invisible to users

  I have a network share folder that I was recently cleaning up permissions to. I took off the four individual names from the access permissions to the folder, and added a new security group (Universal) with standard Read/Write permissions to that folder, then added those 4 people to the group. However... now nobody can see the folder. The users can see the other 9 folders in that shared drive, but the 10th is missing. I cannot see any security permission in the parent folder or in the folder itself which would cause it to be invisible to anyone, regardless of whether they have permission to open it or edit files within.

• Is there ever a reason to do all an object's work in a constructor?

  Let me preface this by saying this is not my code nor my coworkers' code. Years ago when our company was smaller, we had some projects we needed done that we did not have the capacity for, so they were outsourced. Now, I have nothing against outsourcing or contractors in general, but the codebase they produced is a mass of WTFs. That being said, it does (mostly) work, so I suppose it's in the top 10% of outsourced projects I've seen. As our company has grown, we've tried to take more of our development in house. This particular project landed in my lap so I've been going over it, cleaning it up, adding tests, etc etc. There's one pattern I see repeated a lot and it seems so mindblowingly awful that I wondered if maybe there is a reason and I just don't see it. The pattern is an object with no public methods or members, just a public constructor that does all the work of the object. For example, (the code is in Java, if that matters, but I hope this to be a more general question): public class Foo { private int bar; private String baz; public Foo(File f) { execute(f); } private void execute(File f) { // FTP the file to some hardcoded location, // or parse the file and commit to the database, or whatever } } If you're wondering, this type of code is often called in the following manner: for(File f : someListOfFiles) { new Foo(f); } Now, I was taught long ago that instantiated objects in a loop is generally a bad idea, and that constructors should do a minimum of work. Looking at this code it looks like it would be better to drop the constructor and make execute a public static method. I did ask the contractor why it was done this way, and the response I got was "We can change it if you want". Which was not really helpful. Anyway, is there ever a reason to do something like this, in any programming language, or is this just another submission to the Daily WTF?

• Anti Aliasing dead

  I have a problem with anti-aliasing. No matter the software settings, it seems to be gone. I tried driver updating and reinstalling, cleaning of the hardware, different monitor with different cablies, OS reinstalling and changing, none of which helped. I decided to change the graphic card, but that didn't work either. Moreover, I have a distinct impression that the jagged edges are worsening as time goes by. I think this is a hardware-related issue, but I don't know exactly what to do. If anyone here had similar troubles, and/or has an idea how to cope with them, I'd be very grateful. My current card is a nVidia GT610.

• Dell Studio XPS 16 Runs Hot

  Specs: 1920x1080 i7 1.6 GHz quad core 6GB RAM 1GB ATI Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive Love this laptop for many reasons, but it constantly runs hot (CPU is low 70s with basic tasks and often 80+ is not uncommon) and I'm finding it too much to deal with. The laptop feels very hot (almost too hot for a lap) and often gets so hot that the OS slows down or freezes altogether. I've tried cleaning it out and even replacing the thermal paste. I often use an external cooler, but it only helps 3-5 degrees and it's a pain to have to use. I've come to the conclusion that it just runs hot. I have two questions: What is to blame? The i7 processor, the gfx card, or is it just that this laptop has poor cooling? Does the Dell XPS 15 run cooler? I'm looking at replacing my current laptop, but I don't want to run into the same problem.

• How can I dual install Ubuntu 10.4 in a Mac Mini with 10.4.11?

  I'd like to power-up my aging Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11) by installing a shiny Ubuntu alongside the current OS. After all, I use Ubuntu for everything save for cleaning my teeth. Since it's my first and only Mac and I have next to no experience with the OS (having used it basically as a media player) I am a little concerned about rEFIt, ELILO, Boot Camp and the fact that it's basically a 4.5 years old unsupported machine and I might get asleep reinstalling everything several times. I've used the live desktop-i386 CD and everything works. I tried with an external USB drive instead of a CD but couldn't make it boot. As for installing Ubuntu, the howtos I've found give several alternatives depending on the model, the OSX version, etc.. but they usually talk about newer machines. Which howto should I follow to repartition, and boot thereafter? Thanks

• Tidying up old apache logs managed by vlogger

  We're using vlogger to manage our apache logs which keeps everything nice and neat but pretty much breaks the ability to use logrotate from as far as I can see. eg. our virtual access.logs each sit within their own dir and are named similar to: /virtual.com/ 20100501-access.log 20100502-access.log 20100503-access.log 20100504-access.log etc.. Has anyone created a cleanup script to go through the /var/log/httpd/ sub dirs and remove old logs? We like using vlogger, but cleaning up olds logs after it is a pain!

• Laptop turns off after 20 minutes of use

  My laptop a sony vaio VGN-NW11S http://www.trustedreviews.com/Sony-VAIO-VGN-NW11S-S---15-5in-Laptop_Laptop_review. Everytime i turn it on, in safe mode or not, if i try to open an application i.e. run a process such as google chrome or event viewer, defrag, virus scan, it completely turns off without warning, nor giving a trace of events the next time I switch it on. Apart from that, I had worries it might be my battery or power supply but I dont think it is that, I took the laptop apart cleaning fans etc. and have ordered some cpu paste as I checked to see the condition of the processor. I will post to see if re-applying the paste works. One more thing, when the heavy processes kick in, the fan starts to make a lot of noise, maybe trying to cool down the CPU? Any ideas on what else it could be and what I could do to test what is wrong?

  I am at my wits end with this computer. I bought and Acer Aspire 4752 with a fully loaded version of Windows 7 on it. I prefer Ubuntu so I began to install 14.04 from USB. So I tried a different USB stick, same error. Tried different versions of Ubuntu, got the same error. I've used startup disk creator and Unetbootin to make start USB boot devices. I can boot with the USB drive and run Ubuntu that way. I even checked the hard drive using the tools in Ubuntu. Everything was fine, except it said the hard drive was hot. I tried a different hard drive. Got same error above. I ran a test with mem86, everything was fine. No matter what I do, using the USB gives me the Errno5 error. I then switched to using DVDs. Now I keep getting an uncompression error when installing Ubuntu 14.04 or 12.04. I can't figure out for the life of me why I get nothing but errors. Can anyone help?

Another help, I used a code below to drop my memory caches in every hour. 0 * * * * /root/clearcache.sh #!/bin/sh sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches But 1st 15 in every hour my server remain so slow after cleaning the caches. My sites do not load during every hour in 1st 15 minutes. In another way if I restart my server then also caches are removed. So I decided to restart my server in every 2 days to drop my caches. Will it be helpful to restart? Or is there any other way to drop my memory caches that will not down my server?

• Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000, more problematic keys?

  So my new motherboard doesn't have a ps/2 connector, so I bought a Microsoft natural keyboard 4000 to replace my old natural keyboard. But, some of the keys stopped working, so I bought another 4000... which then had different keys stop working. I tried cleaning them out, but no go. My guess is some condensation or something fell on it and shorted it out... but if it is that easy to short out, I can't imagine how my old keyboard lasted for years. Did I just get unlucky or are newer keyboards more vulnerable? Any recommendations?

• PASS: Budget Status

  Our budget situation is a little different this year than in years past.  We were late getting an initial budget approved.  There are a number of different reasons this occurred.  We had different competing priorities and the budget got pushed down the list.  And that’s completely my fault for not making the budget a higher priority and getting it completed on time. That left us with initial budget approval in early August rather than prior to June 30th.  Even after that there were a number of small adjustments that needed to be made.  And one large glaring mistake that needed to be fixed.  We had a typo in the budget that made it through twelve versions of review.  In my defense I can only say that the cell was red so of course it had to be negative!  And that’s one more mistake I can add to my long and growing list of Mistakes I’ll Never Make Again. Last week we passed a revised budget (version 17) with this corrected.  This is the version we’re cleaning up and posting to the web site this week or next.

• Is it possible to change error messages for users connecting to network printers?

  We are cleaning up our print server (Win XP). To test that printers are no longer really there we have set up some tests. These tests have left us with 176 questionable printers. We have now set Print access to Everyone to Deny. Testing shows this gives the user a 5 Access is denied. message. We would like to change this message for the user, so when they call our workstudy's who answer the phone do not interpret this as a computer rights management issue and can route the call properly. Is it possible? Is this error number system wide, or just for printing errors? If it's not a system wide error where might the string for this error be?

• Accidentally ejected my Verbatim drive and can't get the icon back

  Hi, I have time machine running on my iMac OSX v10.5.8 and also have a Verbatim 1TB attached that I use as a workspace/scratchdisk so I can manipulate large music files before I transfer them. However, when cleaning behind my computer the other day I think I dislodged the connection (or maybe one of the kids hit the eject button, i don't know) however, I've re-booted many times and it's not reconnected. It doesn't appear in my disc utility windown and I don't know how to get the icon back! I've looked in time machine but it doesn't appear there at all (cos it's not supposed to I think - it's not connected - my mate hooked it up for me and he won't return my calls!). Help. I don't know how to get it back! Sorry for being a plank.

• What is "queued Windows Error Reporting"?

  I was cleaning up my laptop hard-disk, running Windows 7, and as part of the process I ran the Disk Cleanup utility. To my surprise I saw 2 items in the list that were quite large (both ~300MB). Per user queued Windows Error Reporting System queued Windows Error Reporting I guess I had never noticed these, because they were never that big. So, what are these items? Any particular reason why they became so large all of a sudden? And finally, is it safe to remove them?
