• Login screen won't accept my password

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 and since upgrading have been unable to login to my user profile. The upgrade went okay and I can login to a guest session fine but whenever I try to login to my profile, after entering my password, I just return to the login screen. I've changed my password in Root (passwd 'username')and can log in to tty1 with no issues, it's just in GUI I'm having problems. I'm using a HP dv7 laptop, 32 bit Ubuntu install, Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz × 2, Nvidia graphics. Any help would be appreciated.

• 12.04 Screen goes OFF and ON and hangs

  i have installed ubuntu 12.04. while i'm using the screen goes off, comes back on (during which time, the system is not responsive) and this process repeats one more time in immediate succession after which the computer is responsive again. sometimes the system hangs indefinitely. sometimes the windows go blank. only the title bars are seen. i have tried re-installing the OS three times with no improvements. i have tried both 32 bit as well as 64 bit. i have no idea what the problem is and have tried hard to pin point that. i never had this prob till 11.10 my system config is as follow processor - 2nd gen intel core i7 (2660k) graphics - intel onboard HD graphics 3000 (no external graphics card) RAM - 4GB none of my friends seem to experience this problem. it really gets annoying as it happens really often. please advice

  I have natty, and i have installed kubuntu-desktop package. before installing it, everything was fine but after that, this thing happens: when I'm typing, after stroking a key, screen blacks out, fan speeds up, and i have to turn off machine by pressing power button. it just happens in many different apps (chromium, hotot, kde proxy settings, ...) and in every environment: unity, kde, gnome 2. i don't know what details i must provide with this question, and i don't like to remove my kde desktop, or re-install my ubuntu. any ideas are appreciated ;-)

• After Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 missing user in login screen

  I have upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04 now after booting (even after updates and rebooting) my user id is not listed. It has a uid higher than the minimum in lightdm.conf. I have the user light display manager , guest , and remote login options in the login screen but not my ususal user id that I have been using from ubuntu 9 something. It is a normal user and an administrator so that I could authorize drivers, updates, etc... I do not have any custom display manager setup. It has been standard unity since unity was available. I can login to my account by logging in as guest opening a termial and using su - user Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

• Blank Screen on 12.04

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

• Screen dims & freezes me out

  New to Ubuntu 12.04 (used since 8th April). I have recently been using Firefox for an online course and while working on this virtual PC site, the screen dims and I am frozen out of interacting with my desktop. (I cannot switch to any other tabs in Firefox). Power setting set to suspend after 30 mins. The desktop is connected to the mains. Moving the cursor around appears to have no effect. This is making the course difficult to follow so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

  Hello, Following a question posted here about how I can increase the speed on one of my SQL Search methods, I was advised to update my table to make use of Full Text Search. This is what I have now done, using Gist indexes to make searching faster. On some of the "plain" queries I have noticed a marked increase which I am very happy about. However, I am having difficulty in searching for partial words. For example I have several records that contain the word Squire (454) and I have several records that contain Squirrel (173). Now if I search for Squire it only returns the 454 records but I also want it to return the Squirrel records as well. My query looks like this SELECT title FROM movies WHERE vectors @@ to_tsoquery('squire'); I thought I could do to_tsquery('squire%') but that does not work. How do I get it to search for partial matches ? Also, in my database I have records that are movies and others that are just TV Shows. These are differentiated by the "" over the name, so like "Munsters" is a TV Show, whereas The Munsters is the film of the show. What I want to be able to do is search for just the TV Show AND just the movies. Any idea on how I can achieve this ? Regards Anthoni

• dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, black screen when loading Windows

  I am proficient with Windows and not so much with Linux. Here is my story: Original system came with Windows 7, got openSUSE installed on the second hard drive, and dual boot for this setup worked fine. Wanted to switch to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot so I did a Windows system recovery and it appeared to give me back a fresh Windows 7 install. I then go to install Ubuntu 11.04 and the installer informs me I have multiple operating systems already installed. I go to the advanced partitioning option and sure enough Windows 7 is on /sda while openSUSE is still on /sdb. From here I followed this guide (How to dual-boot Linux and Ubuntu with two hard drives) after I had deleted all the openSUSE partitions on /sdb through the Allocate Drive Space tab of the installer. I make the /boot, swap, /, and /home partitions and set the GRUB into the MBR of the second disk (/dev/sdb). Everything installs fine. I reboot, Windows loads automatically, install EasyBCD and add an entry for Ubuntu into the Windows Boot Manager while assigning the type as GRUB2. Reboot the system and it now shows dual booting options for both Windows and Ubuntu. Problem is: while I can use Ubuntu fine when I try to boot into Windows it just gives me a black screen and after a little while the fans start running crazy. If I restart the computer I will sometimes get the message that my system was put into hibernation mode because the temperature got too high (90C) which I presume is in accordance with the fans going crazy. I have linked the output from the Boot Info Script below, any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated! • T60 Screen/LCD gets black after some minutes with a highpitched sound rising and fading

  Just now my T60 screen got "black" (so no display). On my second monitor: no problems so the vga output works. symptom: Screen blanks / no display but works on second monitor steps to reproduce: - boot - wait (it does not matter what you do you do not have to login or anything) - (now the monitor of the laptop slowly begins to make a ssssssssHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWOEOEssssssss noice of about 10 seconds) - right after the sounds ends the monitor gets black times seem to be the same each time. software: installed no new software before/after, running zone alarm and antivirus. other: it does not feel hot in any place, there dont seem to be running processes with strange behaviour. warranty: out of warranty what was i doing: typing text on a website and doing some php coding in a text editor. • Ubuntu 11.10 won't boot on Dell XPS 8300

  I have a brand new Dell Studio XPS 8300 desktop with 17-2600 cpu, H67 chipset, 8GB DDR3, 2 1TB HDDs in mirrored RAID, and AMD Radeon 6770. Dell doesn't support Ubuntu here in Australia so it came with Windows 7 and Windows software. Yes I had to pay for an O.S. and software I didn't want to get hardware I did want, all at a greatly inflated price. It's not all beer and skittles in the land of Oz. I changed boot priorities in the BIOS to DVD and ran Ubuntu 11.10 64bit from the ISO with NOMODESET. The installation reformatted all partitions to rid me of the dreaded Windows. All was well until until reboot. The BIOS does its thing, then its "The Black Screen of Death" with a blinking cursor; no boot screen, no Grub, no keyboard, no mouse. I've searched Dell and Ubuntu forums in vain. Can you help? I would be really grateful for any advice which can help turn my big expensive paperweight into a really useful machine. • GNU Screen and Finch Not Playing Nicely

  I use finch for instant messaging, and for persistence, finch is one of the things that runs in my screen session. There are three main computers that I access my screen session from, and each works at a different screen resolution. Because of the different resolutions, when I switch computers, I use screen -rd to attach to my screen session. Using screen -x results in problems. When I attach to the session, though, finch experiences display problems. I have to wait up to several minutes for finch to become responsive - it doesn't redraw properly at all. Trying to switch between chats just writes ^n and ^p, or ^(1-9) for numbers. It fixes itself after some time. Using ctrl-l does not help. Switching back and forth between screen windows does not help. This is an annoying behavior that I don't experience with any other applications running in screen. Is this a bug in screen or finch, and if not, what can I change about my configuration to correct it ? (would appreciate it if "finch" could be used as a tag for this instead of or in addition to "pidgin")

  I am trying to make screen work on HP-UX B.11.23 U ia64 0308561483 unlimited-user license. Please notice I do not have root access. I have already compiled screen successfully, configured with LIBS=-lcurses. When I try to start screen it wrotes Cannot find terminfo entry for 'xterm'. But there ARE terminfos for the terminal type in screen-4.0.3> ls -a /usr/share/lib/terminfo/x/ . .. x-hpterm x1700 x1720 x1750 xitex xl83 xterm xterms I thing the problem may be there are in non-standard path, because according to man page standard path is /usr/lib/terminfo/?/* What I tried: But as I said I do not have root access so cant make symlink, anyway I tried run screen with filled TERMINFO_DIRS (TERMINFO_DIRS=/usr/share/lib/terminfo/x/ ./screen and TERMINFO_DIRS=/usr/share/lib/terminfo/ ./screen) but none of them work - same error. Change TERM to different values - same error Cannot find terminfo entry for <WHATEVER WHAT WAS IN TERM VAR>. Put something into screenrc and run ./screen -c screenrc screen-4.0.3> cat screenrc attrcolor b ".I" term xterm termcap xterm* LP:hs@ termcapinfo xterm 'Co#256:AB=\E[48;5;%dm:AF=\E[38;5;%dm' defbce "on" But no luck so far, have you got any suggestions? • How to turn off screen (DPMS) together with locking session in KDE?

  First of all, I'm aware a similar question for GNOME is asked here: "Switch off laptop backlight when locking screen". Objective I would like to turn off my screen on locking the session for power saving reasons. Actual problem Locking the screen on Kubuntu (KDE) inevitably triggers the screensaver as far as I can see. There's no screensaver option other than 'Blank screen' together with its background colour set to black that comes just close to my goal. It blanks the screen, but doesn't turn off the screen. Screen's backlight will still be on and not saving any power. Current workaround A workaround via a script + shortcut key is possible, however, it's just a workaround since it doesn't trigger on all ways to lock the session. Therefore, I think it should be possible to have it done more elegantly, for example by providing this option in KDE's configuration dialog of the screensaver. The workaround I am now using is the following. A script that locks the screen and turns off the screen: #!/bin/bash qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver Lock xset dpms force standby and let it run with a shortcut key via a custom menu entry. It works. Here's why I consider it to be a workaround rather than a solution. It doesn't work for other ways to trigger the locking of the session. My actual question(s) Do I need to touching/patching KDE's source? If not what are my options? If so, could someone point me to where I can get started? what do you think is the recommended place in the GUI for configuration? I'm using Kubuntu 12.04 and willing to upgrade to KDE 4.9 or waiting for the 12.10 release.

• Screen refresh/display problem in Xubuntu 14.04

  I have just installed Xubuntu 14.04 as a dual boot on a desk top (Pentium R 4 CPU, 2.66 GHZ, 2G RAM) running XP home edition. In some situations when in Xubuntu I am having what seem to be screen refresh problems. When I open File Manager or Settings Manager the text names of various apps display but most of the icons do not. Moving the mouse over an app name generally causes the icon to appear, but it often vanishes once the mouse pointer is moved. This issue occurs irrespective of the view setting. Icons appear fine in the menu that comes up when I right click in the desktop, and in the menu that comes up when I click the mouse icon at top left. What I suspect is a related issue. In Abiword text sometimes fades, disappears or does not display immediately when I type, or text of the whole document fades. It then comes back or darkens if I left click a few times on the text. If I scroll through a document the text often fades and may remain faded until I left click a few times.

  Hi I have been trying to send commands to a running gnu screen session (4.00.03) in opensolaris, but cannot get it to run any commands through any combination of screen -X Ok, I start a screen session with screen -S test, and then tried to with screen -r -X "date"to just show me the date, when I would reconnect to it. But neither an error message nor output in the screen happened. I tried with so many combinations, that I can't even remember. Any hints on how to accomplish it? The reason why I am doing this is, because I have a program, which does not come as a daemon, and I wish to start it in a screen session, so I can later on see what is going on.

Here I can not get back the the screen 2101.pts-0.ubuntu and infact I get exited. Where as if I do screen -r 9531.pts-0.ubuntu [detached from 9531.pts-0.ubuntu] then above you can see I went inside that session and came out and I can do it again and again.But with other sessions same is not the case? SO what mistake am I doing?

• Black stripe appears to the right of the screen, impossible to get rid of

  After clicking the "Auto Config" button on my Acer AL2216w screen a stripe appeared on the right of the screen where the screen doesn't "exist" and I can't seem to take the screen viewport back even by using the OCD setting and moving it to the right. The left part of the screen is also hidden and I'm not able to see what's going on there. The PC is connected to the screen through a DVI adapter and a VGA cable. I also use multiple monitors and this is the second monitor. Anyway this seems not to be a related issue, as this used to happen even when I only had a single monitor. I managed to fix this issue once but it was more than two years ago and I can't remember what I did, and out of all of the things I've tried so far (connecting the screen to another PC and performing auto adjustment, switching the cables, etc.) none worked. Here's how it looks: Can anyone help me fix this?

• Lenovo G530 laptop screen flicker

  I have a Lenovo G530 laptop that has an issue with screen flicker that is getting worse. The computer screen will start going thru a crazy screen flicker then will stop and start again. I have already checked cable connection to lcd on motherboard and reseated connection as someone suggested in another posting I found online that resolved issue. I am starting to think it might be a bad inverter or screen because I have hooked up laptop to external monitor and it is running fine with no flickering happening when the flickering is occurring on laptop.   I'm thinking about buying a new laptop, and while I bought my original one oblivious to the fact that there could be different quality screens out there, after seeing the screen on my sister's netbook I realized that I might have to be cautious with my next purchase. Granted, I did not confirm that the reason my sister's screen looks the way it does is due to the screen itself and not color scheme/graphics card, but I know very little about the different screen technologies and how they differ in image quality and therefore can't really tell if wondering about it even makes sense or not. So what I'm asking is: should I be worried about screen quality? And if so, what technologies should I be looking for? How do they differ and which are the best ones? What are the different elements that determine the quality of a screen and which stats should I go for in each element? For the record, I'm not interested in opinions about screen size, but picture quality for lots of reading/coding.

  I'm trying to record video from a firefox run by xvfb-run but it always output nothing in the video file except black screen. Here's what I did: start a firefox, open google.com: $ xvfb-run firefox https://google.com Then it will use the default display server number 99. I can see the display information by command xdpyinfo -display :99. A screenshot works very well by command: $ xwd -root -silent -display :99.0 | xwdtopnm |pnmtojpeg > screen.jpg Start using ffmpeg to record a video: $ ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :99.0 out.mpg When I play the video file out.mpg, there's black screen all the time. Is there any parameter I missed? Updates I made progress that the video works instead of black screen only by this command: $ ffmpeg -y -r 30 -g 300 -f x11grab -s 1024x768 -i :99 -vcodec qtrle out.mov Notice it requires the screen resolution matches by specify more options to xvfb-run: $ xvfb-run -s "-screen 0 1224x768x16" -a firefox http://google.com But I still want to get more feedbacks and answers here.

• Why would Silverlight be crashing in Release but not in Debug mode?

  I have a Silverlight App that has worked well in Debug and Release modes for weeks. It still works well in Debug mode. However, now when I run it in Release mode, it starts, shows me the screen, loads the data, then hangs, and the browser (Firefox) closes automatically. I've tried other browsers and each of them crashes, Chrome says "The Silverlight Plug-In has crashed" for instance.
