    Hi, I have bunch of questions: I have a Mac network, which has five Mac's. Right now, they are individually getting software updates. Is there a way to download the patches/security updates in a single place (repository) and point all machines to this location? Personally, I have tools like Monolingual and Onyx, but are there tools you could recommend that affect the performance of the Operating System positively? Tweaks would be nice. Links and pointers, would be really appreciated. I've read about Time machine, is there a way to backup all machines to a network drive using this tool? Thanks!

  • Mac Snow Leopard opening the same program in multiple Spaces

    I noticed that if I had Safari open in say, Space 1, I would be sent back to Space 1 if I tried to open Safari in any other space. Now I know that I can open multiple windows of Safari in Space 1 and then just move the windows manually, but is there an easy way to open an already opened program in a new Space?

  • Launchd item no longer firing in Snow Leopard

    A launchd item that was working in 10.5 is no longer working after my upgrade to 10.6. I am running 10.6.2 and I have recreated the launchd item and given it a new name and that one doesn't run either. I have found a link of people with the same problem on google groups but none of the advice in that link helps. My launchd item is not listed in /private/var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist or in any of the overrides.plist files in the subdirectories of /private/var/db/launchd.db/ I have also tried to set this up as both a user agent and a user daemon. My launchd item simply runs a shell script, which I have no problem launching manually. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>com.eric.tmnotify.launchd</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/<path_to>/tmnotify.sh</string> </array> <key>StartInterval</key> <integer>3600</integer> </dict> </plist> I have tried to load it by overriding the disabled key (even though it is not disabled in any of the overrides.plist files) with both: sudo launchctl load -F /Users/eric/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eric.tmnotify.launchd.plist sudo launchctl load -w /Users/eric/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eric.tmnotify.launchd.plist and after running either of them I can see that it is running by using sudo launchctl list but the shell script never fires.   • SSL timeout on some sites, across all browsers, on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    For the past several weeks, I've been receiving "Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out" when I attempt to connect to either Twitter or Paypal via SSL. I get this specific error in Google Chrome, but the same problem occurs in both Safari and Firefox. Other sites work fine, and other computers on my network can access these two sites. I have no firewall settings that would prevent me from accessing these sites over port 443. I notice that both Twitter and Paypal both have "Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA" certificates. It is unclear whether this is related to the problem. In an effort to troubleshoot, I attempted to open the test sites referenced on Verisign's root certificate support page, which worked fine. Just to be sure, I downloaded and installed the root package file and installed all included Verisign certificates. No joy. I feel like I've hit a dead end. Any ideas? Update the first: I also cannot connect to FedEx.com, who also has a Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation cert. Update the second: Aaaaaaand it fixed itself. I did nothing. Or, I did something that worked, but in a delayed fashion. Frustrating, but a win is a win. I'll take it.

    I'm working in Eclipse one night, (also using Android's DDMS from the commandline). The next morning, I open the lid... attempt to run Eclipse and get an error. me$ sudo /Applications/eclipse/eclipse JavaVM: requested Java version ((null)) not available. Using Java at "" instead.     Possible Duplicate: Is it possible to install Mac OS X on customized hardware? Well, I don't think its possible - but I'm curious why not - but can someone install Mac OS's on Intel machines? For along time the architecture was different RISC vs x86, but then later they moved to x86, so how difficult is it to install Snow Leopard on a regular Wintel laptop / desktop?

    I'm using a new macbook 10.6.5. I've been using mac OS for years. However, the problem that I'm getting is that the desktop icons keep resizing repeatedly. It keeps going to the biggest size possible and its driving me crazy. I've been resizing it back to medium size all the time. But when I start doing something at the finder it starts resizing by itself once again. Is there a fix to this problem? Please help.

    I'm trying to get sendmail working on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.4), so that I can send mail with PHP's mail() function. If you know how to do this without sendmail, I'd be interested in that also. The plan is to send mail through smtp.gmail.com using my gmail account, unless you have a better idea. I did this and that didn't work. In /etc/postfix/smtp_sasl_passwords I tried both:     smtp.yourisp.com username:password and     smtp.yourisp.com [email protected]:password The problem seems to be that google doesn't like me.     I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

Basically, when I start up my Mac (iMac10,1 - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.3) everything proceeds as usual until I reach the login window. The login window displays normally, but keyboard and mouse input seem to be ignored. This condition persists for around 5 minutes at which time everything goes back to normal. While the login window is frozen my second monitor appears entirely blue, the second monitor receives a background as soon as the login window becomes responsive. If I startup while holding SHIFT the problem still occurs, but the freeze is much shorter. Looking through my logs I see no activity during the time that the login window is frozen. I've attempted to repair disk permissions, and gone through every possible maintenance option in Cocktail.

  • Automount of AFP shares on Lion clients from OS X Snow Leopard server - not working right

    Recently upgraded Snow Leopard clients to Lion. AFP shares are set up as login items. The network shares on some of the machines now take a long time to come up (10 minutes). Several machines that were upgraded are acting normally, and three machines with clean installs of Lion (not upgraded) are also working normally. Is there a network file causing a conflict on some of these client machines? Thanks, Paul

  • Installing Color-Theme with GNU Emacs 23.2 on OS X Snow Leopard

    Hi all, I've just started using emacs a week ago and I've been unsuccessful in installing color-theme using GNU Emacs 23.2 on OS X. With Ubuntu the whole process took maybe a few minutes with the package manager, but I'm completely at a loss with OS X, what the heck is a "tarball"? I don't have any experience compiling source code. I know Carbon Emacs comes with color-theme packaged, what would i lose by reverting to Emacs 22? I'd prefer staying with GNU Emacs 23 across both systems. Any input is greatly appreciated!!

  • Core Animation not working on Leopard, working on Snow Leopard

    Hi, I animate NSImageViews using its animator proxy. While testing my application on Snow Leopard, everything works as expected. However, on Leopard, none of the animations are functioning. In addition, NSImageViews don't seem to take into effect the alphaValue I set on them, whether through the animator proxy or not. The only way I can get them to disappear is by setting their image to nil. What is weird is that this all works fine in Snow Leopard, but does not work on Leopard 10.5.8. Any idea on why this may be occurring?

  • How to use a local Leopard Server Mail server acting "like" an Exchange mail server

    We have a local Exchange 2003 server (company .local) who is collecting POP3 mail accounts on a distant (company .com) mailserver. The mails are collected by the Exchange server every 5-10 minutes and stored locally (on company .local), so the users can read them without going on the "real" mail server (company.com) What was explaned to me is that the mail collection is made with POP Now we are migrating on Snow Leopard Server. We have chosen to use a new extension for our local domain: .leo So our mailserver's FQDN is mail.company.leo, and the users have a user [email protected] formated mail address. A) All works fine except that I can't find how to tell the mail.company.leo that he must retreive the mails from the "real" public server (mail.company.com) I'm hoping to use IMAP and not POP. I can send mail using SMTP relay from mail.company.leo but (I know it's trivial) answering is not possible, even if I specify the reply-to as [email protected] (this seems to be related to A) ) I don't know if it's very complicated (I suspect not, but...) to achieve what I want to do, and I'm not a genius. But as I'm a little bit lost, I hopesomebody can or will help me. Solving this will allow us to use iCal invitations too, so a lot of services depends of these mailserver settings Some of you discuss the fact thta we choose to use a "new" tld with the .leo extension. We have no problem for that, we could use .local. no problem ;) We used .leo instead of .local just to differentiate the two systems (Exchange and SnowLeopardServer). The question was not about that, it was just to know if we can set a SnowLeopard mail server to act like an Exchange Server.   • OSX root user keeps re-enabling itself on reboot

    Running Snow Leopard. Completely inexplicably, I seem to have enabled the OSX root user by accident. I honestly have no idea how it happened, but if memory serves I was looking at the login pane (with my two user accounts) when I must have hit something, and suddenly the two accounts were replaced by one that just said "Other..." Clicking the "Other..." account allows me to type a username and password, but neither of the normal two accounts would work. Since I never set a root password, it wouldn't let me in that way either. So I booted into Single User mode and ran these commands: /sbin/mount -uw / fsck -fy launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist dscl . -passwd /Users/root newpassword and that let me login as root. Then, I went to System Preferences, Accounts, Login Options, clicked Join, Open Directory Utility, and lastly in the Edit menu I clicked "Disable Root User" Great, I thought, back to normal. Except rebooting, I still only have the Other... account visible, and the root password I set beforehand doesn't work anymore! I have to reboot into Single User Mode and go through the whole process again just to get back into the system (as root) How on Earth did I accidentally enable this? I didn't even know about the Directory Utility before now. And most importantly, why the heck would it be re-enabling the root user on boot? Thanks in advance to any help!
