• Problem with several USB devices on Windows XP. How to diagnose USB device?

  Hello All, Recently I've bought some electronic devices (like e.g. Sony Ebook reader PRS-600 or HP PDA IPaq) which are connected to PC using USB ports. These devices have own batteries and they are recharged using USB. However, I am experiencing a problem with Ebook Reader and the similiar thing happens with my PDA (but in this case it's more rare). Sometimes, I am unable to make it start recharging, when it's connected to USB port. The LCD diode on my Reader lights up and the icon in the system tray appears. They both indicate that the device has been connected. However, the device should start recharching and it should appear on Windows XP as a 'explorable' device (just like pendrive it offers some HDDs). None of these happens:( This problem appears on two PCs - desktop and laptop. Both have Windows XP SP3 installed. And what's interesting and surprising to me is the fact that these devices sometimes work without any problems. I mean, I just plug them in and they work properly. Besides that, there are some computers (I have tested a variety of possible conditions) on which the problem does not appear! I am confused and, on the other hand, determined to find out what is the real cause of such strange behavior. Maybe I'm wrong but I always assumed that I'm using deterministic machines, but the described situation makes me feel like I was dreaming:) And that's why I'm asking you here. Are there any tools that could help me diagnose USB ports? Or maybe anyone knows the solution? I have a lot experience with low level programming (mostly from the times of MS-DOS applications), but I'm not an expert when it comes to WinXP technology. If this was a problem with network connection, I would know what to do - I know how to track network traffic, but with USB ports I feel powerless. I have a feeling that the problem may lie in a way WinXP handles USB devices. Personally, I hate auto-discovery and P'n'P features available in Windows. I know that some of may suggest to move to Linux or other *Nix system. Unfortunately, I have to use WinXP in my professional life, so it's rather impossible. Besides that, I don't consider XP as a total disaster. Any help from you will be appreciated!

• Have a set a cgi scripts shared by multiple domains

  Goal: Have multiple domains share a set of cgi(perl) scripts Environment: Apache 2.0 on a dedicated Cent OS server. (Apache configuration files generated by cPanel) I have dozens of domains on the dedicated server. The domains set up by cPanel under VirtualHost section. I have almost no knowledge of Apache. Most of what I do is taken care of by cPanel. I would like to put a set of scripts under one directory (perhaps under / or /opt ) and for each of the domains, under the individual cgi-bin, I would like to create a symbolic link to this common directory. This way I am hoping to avoid having to keep a copy of scripts for every domain. Since Apache config files are generated by cPanel, I would not like to manually make changes to those. Beside, I could mess things up. I see that cPanel recommends use of include files rather than changing the httpd.conf Perhaps I need to have the following of symbolic links enabled in the cgi-bin directory and allow the web server user execute the scripts not owned by it. May be I am making things more complicated than they are. I would be glad to use any other means to achieve my goal. • Wordpress Multisite- How to restrict a non-wordpress page only to one domain

  I am running three blogs from a wordpress multisite. Currently, I am developing a separate, non wordpress application. I want to link this application with blog1. I put the application in the subfoler of my root directory (The Wordpress multisite is installed in the root). I linked the application in the menu of blog1. So far so good. But, it is possible to access the application from all the three blogs. I want the application to be accessible only from blog1-domain/my-app/ but when I tried blog2-domain/my-app, it just opened normally. Generally, the application is accessible from all the three domains followed by /my-app. I don't think it is proper to go this way. Then, what can I do to restrict my app to be accessible only from a my blog1-domain/my-app ? Or am I not using a good blog structure?. I am open to all kind of suggestions. Thank you for your help.

• DNS - domain conflict?

  I was given two domains: domain.com & domain.info (they are on GoDaddy). And I was also given two servers, 107.105.38.99 - Rails app and 107.107.90.17 - Wordpress platform, on Digital Ocean. At first, I was instructed to associate domain.com with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Then I was instructed to de-associate this IP with domain.com and associated the 107.107.90.17 with the domain name domain.com. Then I was instructed to associated domain.info with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Right now, when I go to domain.com the WordPress platform (107.107.90.17) loads fine and that is what is expected. But when I go to domain.info for the Rails app (107.107.38.99) I get redirected to domain.com. This is not expected and this is really weird for me. When I ping domain.info I get this: PING domain.info (107.107.38.99): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 107.107.38.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=74.601 ms Which is the expected result showing the correct IP but I don't understand why I get redirected to domain.com...(which when I ping is:) domain 64 bytes from 107.107.90.17: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=75.057 ms The PTR Records on Digital Ocean are as follows: IP Address PTR Record 107.107.38.99 domain.info. 107.107.90.17 domain.com. and the DNS configurations on Digital Ocean are: domain.com A: @ 107.107.90.17 CNAME: * @ domain.info A: @ 107.107.38.99 CNAME: * @ I am not sure what the issue is, if you have any clue please let me know, I will be really grateful. • Sitemap structure for network of subdomains

  I am working on a project that's a network of 2 domains (domain.gr & domain.com.cy) of subdomains similar to Hubpages [each user gets a profile under a different subdomain & there is a personal blog for that user as well] and I think there is something wrong with our sitemap submission. Sometimes it takes weeks in order a new profiles to get indexed. We make use of one Webmasters account in order to manage all network and we don't want to create different accounts for each subdomain since there are more than 1000 already. According to this post http://goo.gl/KjMCjN, I end up on a structure of 5 sitemaps with the following structure : 1st sitemap will be for indexing the others. 2nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.gr 3nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.com.cy 4th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.gr - news sitemap http://goo.gl/8A8S9f 5th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.com.cy - news sitemap again Now my questions: Should we create news sitemaps or just list all post in 2nd & 3rd sitemap? Does links ordering has anything to do? Eg: Most recent user created be first in sitemap or doesn't make any different and we just need to make sure that lastmod date is correct? Does anyone guess how Hubpages submit their sitemap in Webmasters so maybe we could follow there way? Any alternative or better way to index this kind of schema? PS: Our network is multi language - Greek & English are available. We make use of hreflang tags on the head of each page to separate country target of each version.

• On what criteria should I evaluate domain registrars?

  Though I've been a web developer for a fair amount of time, I am going for the first time to buy a few domain names. I have looked into the domains I'm going to buy and know that they're available, and I've been looking into which sellers to use. After doing a lot of research, the main ones I'm considering are 1&1, Namecheap, and Gandi. The problem is, when continuing to research, I'm not really sure what makes one domain seller distinct from another. I don't need much in the way of services--definitely not hosting, since I plan to use Heroku for that. I mainly only need the domain itself and DNS management, as well as possibly SSL certificates and WHOIS protection. Question: What makes one domain seller different from another? How can I go about evaluating which one is the best for me? Note: This question is not which domain seller is the best, but rather, what criteria can I use to evaluate them and rank one over another. I'm trying to find out what makes one domain seller different from another, since they all seem to be pretty similar to me right now.

• Authentication system brainstorm

  Hi. We got multiple small websites (microsites) and one main high traffic one with big users base. Right now the requirement is to build authentication system which should allow users to loign with the same identity across the network. All website are running on different domains, powered by Drupal 6 CMS and have separate databases (so sharing tables with prefix is not an option + it creates a huge mess in the db). Here is the set of core requirements I came up with: Users should be able to login with the same credentials to all sites within the network User’s data sharing between Main site (storage) and all micro sites within the network Data synchronization across the network when user changes the data (update email or password for example) The login/registration process should be seamless and consistent Register on any of the sites across the network and use that identity to login later on. In the future there might be a need to add openid authentication options. Basically we are looking at something similar stackexchange does, but not sure if they have central users base on not. I was thinking about custom solution which will include 2 parts (modules), one will be stored on the Main site for users data storing and responding to requests from clients. Second part (module) will be placed on each microsite, which is going to send requests to the Master. Some kind of client - server setup. One of the complications I see right away is #3. Data Synhcronization across the network. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel and maybe some work is already done in this direction. Looking forward to your ideas on how to approach this project. • Directing Multiple ccTLD's to 1 gTLD with a country specific subdirectory?

  We have multiple ccTLDomains and are thinking about how to best combine these into one. We want to do this to focus our link building efforts. We are running a website through which we offer a software-as-a-service. Therefore we could potentially sell to any country in the world. However, Germany is our most important market. We currently have a .com, .de, .nl. and .pl domain. All these domains have a high amount of unique content pages. What we are planning is to change everything to .com with language-based subdirectories, so .com/en/, .com/de/, etc. I have two questions concerning this issue: 1) How much of an advantage does a ccTLD have over a gTLD with country specific subdirectories in search rankings? So let’s say .de versus .com/de/? 2) How could we best redirect the visitors of our old ccTLD’s to our gTLD’s subdirectories? We would like to loose as few search engine rankings as possible. • Getting expired domain name - most effective route?

  There is a domain name I have been wanting for years that was used as a parked page (read: cybersquatted) that has entered into WHOIS's redemptionPeriod stage. The domain has been expired for 61 days now - after contacting the Registar, they informed me that it would stay in redemption for 75 days. After which, it would either be sold to resellers, or sent back to the public registry. (I have since sent a followup message requesting the reseller they use.) My question is: What is the best way to proceed? I know there is at least one competitor that would love to have this name, but I'm unsure if they even know it's expiring. I did not tell the Registar the domain in question, as they seem geared towards cybersquatting, and I do not trust them. Domain Front Running sucks. Should I use a backorder service? Should I just take my chances and try to grab it after75 days? I checked an auctionhouse by manually browsing their expired domains - it wasn't there.

• Mobile (Portable) Website

  I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is html and css only (no db), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives; host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about domain name)? have a portable XAMPP version on a USB (again, domain name)? possible fail-over site/location? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Update Presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.

This is my code.. webview.loadDataWithBaseURL("file:///059600656X/", data, "text/html", "UTF-8", "about:blank"); // here data is a string object which contain html parsing data. I think it cant find the images in given directory. Can Anybody help me?

  I am given a number N, and i must add some numbers from the array V so that they wil be equal. V is consisting of numbers that are all powers of 3: N = 17 S = 0 V = 1 3 9 27 81 .. I should add numbers from V to N and S in order to make them equal. The solution to the example above is : 17 + 1 + 9 = 27, 27, 1 and 9 are taken from V, a number from V can be taken only once, and when taken it's removed from V. I tried sorting V and then adding the biggest numbers from V to S until S has reached N, but it fails on some tests when it's like: N = 7 S = 0 V = 1 3 9 27 So the solution will be: 7 + 3 = 9 + 1 In examples like this i need to add numbers both to N and S, and also select them so they become equal. Any idea of solving this ? Thanks.

What to do when you're faced with a problem that you can't solve quickly? Are there non-programming related activities akin to solving programming problems? I am a computer engineering graduate. I have studied programming since three years. I am good in coding and programming. I have been trying to compete in algorithmic competitions on sites such as topcoder,spoj since one and a half year, but I am still unable to solve problems other than too easy problems. I have learned from people that it takes practice to solve such problems. I try to solve those problems but sometimes I am unable to understand and even if I do understand I am unable to think of a good algorithm for solving it. Even if I solve I get Wrong answer and I am unable to figure out what is the problem with my code as it works on samples given on the sites but fails on test cases which they do not provide. I really want to solve those problems and become good in algorithms. I have read books for learning algorithms like Introduction to algorithms by CLRS,practicing programming questions. I have gone through some questions but they don't answer this question. I have seen the questions which are said duplicates but those questions focus on overall programming, but I am asking for algorithm related programming, basically for competing in programming which involve solving a problem statement then online judge will automatically evaluate it, such type of programming is quite different from the type of programming these questions discuss.

  I'm getting an error when ever I try to pull down a web page with urllib.urlopen. I've disabled windows firewall and my AV so its not that. I can access the pages in my browser. I even reinstalled python to rule out it being a broken urllib.   Dont know whether this is a duplicate, but this was an interview question asked to me. Given an array of random numbers and -1 placed inbetween, I have to compact the array meaning all the -1s are to be replaced and the final output should be the last valid index with the fresh array. For example. Input: 3 4 -1 -1 -1 5 8 -1 8 Output: 3 4 5 8 8 5 8 -1 8 and last valid index is 4 Input: -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 2 Output: 2 -1 -1 -1 -1 2 and last valid index is 0 Input: -1 -1 -1 3 3 3 Output: 3 3 3 3 3 3 and last valid index is 2 You should not swap the values just the last valid index along with the array is enough to decipher the non negative values.
