  I have an old desktop sitting around I wanted to try making a server out of, but I don't want to pay to register a Domain Name. Is there a way I can host a website without a domain name, or to register a domain name for free? If I can't host a web page without a domain name, can I just access the files on the server through the internet some how without a domain name? Thanks for any insight!

• What do encrypted files' data look like?

  I know there are a lot of encryption programs available, that I would guess use different methods for encryption, and thus have different types of output files (.fve .tc .cha .dmg (bitlocker, truecrypt, challenger, ect.)), but if someone didn't know what the file was and just looked at the data, what would it look like? Does it just look like random bits, or can you still pick out a pattern? If it does look random, how is it if I moved the encrypted file to another computer, the other computer can tell it's a file, and is able to decrypt it (how would it even know where to start or stop, if it all looked random)? Also, how is the structure affected by encrypting files twice, using the same method, or a different one? Thanks for any help, and if you know any books or site about encryption for complete idiots, I'd appreciate it!

• Any way to map WebDAV with SSL as network drive in Windows XP?

  I'm trying to map WebDAV with SSL as a network drive in Windows XP. (I've been at this for several hours) I can read the share just fine using a browser and with Network Places, but it refuses to mount as a network drive. I've tried it using the Windows explorer interface and net use. Net use with the \\server@ssl:443\webdav method gives System error 53. https://server/webdav gives error 67. Any help would be appreciated.

  I recently downloaded a piece of software that came in a .ZIP archive, but the .EXE software inside of the archive had a password on it. The website that I would have gotten the password from closed a while ago. Because the executable is password protected it cannot be extracted. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium, and I use winrar for my archives. So, I guess my question is is it possible to crack a password for a file within an archive without extracting it?

• Remote Install Mac OS X from Windows not on LAN?

  I want to install applications from my Mac OS X install disc, or be able to archive-install from it, but it's back at my house outside my current LAN. Is there a way I can remotely access my OS X install disc on my home Windows XP computer from my Snow Leopard? In my help manual it says I can do remote installs, or use another computer's disc drive remotely, but it has to be with another computer on the LAN. Is there a way to combine my mac's LAN and my windows' LAN? I think it has something to do with making a VPN; is there a way to do that which will work between Snow Leopard and XP, doesn't require additional hardware, and is preferably free? Thanks a lot!

  I am designing a site where external links form various are being shown on my page. I am using $url=$_GET['url']; $website_data = file_get_contents($url); echo $website_data; so essentially a user would click on a hyperlink which is something like www.test.com/display_page.php?url=http://www.xyz.com/article/2.jpg My page, list_of_images.php, typically has a list of images with href for each image as above on the page and when any image is clicked it would go to display_page.php, which would show our banner on the top of this page, some text and then this image beneath that. This image could be from any website. I am currently sending the url directly and grabbing it using GET. I understand that users/hackers can actually do some coding and send commands for the url variable and could break the server or do something harmful and so i would like to avoid this method or sending the url directly in the header. what is the alternate approach for this problem?

• How to draw shadows that don't suck?

  A CAShapeLayer uses a CGPathRef to draw it's stuff. So I have a star path, and I want a smooth drop shadow with a radius of about 15 units. Probably there is some nice functionality in some new iPhone OS versions, but I need to do it myself for a old aged version of 3.0 (which most people still use). I tried to do some REALLY nasty stuff: I created a for-loop and sequentially created like 15 of those paths, transform-scaling them step by step to become bigger. Then assigning them to a new created CAShapeLayer and decreasing it's alpha a little bit on every iteration. Not only that this scaling is mathematically incorrect and sucks (it should happen relative to the outline!), the shadow is not rounded and looks really ugly. That's why nice soft shadows have a radius. The tips of a star shouldn't appear totally sharp after a shadow size of 15 units. They should be soft like cream. But in my ugly solution they're just as s harp as the star itself, since all I do is scale the star 15 times and decrease it's alpha 15 times. Ugly. I wonder how the big guys do it? If you had an arbitrary path, and that path must throw a shadow, how does the algorithm to do that work? Probably the path would have to be expanded like 30 times, point-by-point relative to the tangent of the outline away from the filled part, and just by 0.5 units to have a nice blending. Before I re-invent the wheel, maybe someone has a handy example or link?

• Method to control multiple sites using same cookie?

  Is it possible for two different web pages to use the same cookie? For example, some news sites now have buttons on the bottom, where if you are logged into facebook, you can just click the button to "like" the article. Is this a case of a 3rd party website using facebook's cookie to know which account you are, and if so, is there a way I can control it? I'm not sure how the new "like" system works, so maybe the button part isn't actually on the news site, but hosted on facebooks servers or something, so it's really facebook itself accessing its own cookie. If that's the case, is there a way I can choose when a site accesses its own cookie? Thanks for any help!

• Search Box/Transition won't work in Firefox

  I disabled the search box on IE, because IE kept centering it over the navigation. It works in Chrome, I'm not sure about opera (and I'm not sure if I care) but it won't work in Firefox. The ease-out timing works in Firefox, but nothing else really works. I've tried other things to work around the issue, but every time I try something different, the search box's positioning gets thrown off. If you look at it in Firefox, it looks fine-- until you click on it to search. http://kissoff.weebly.com/ You can see what the search box is supposed to do if you look at it and click on it in Chrome.   I am working on a project where i need to create a database with 300 tables for each user who wants to see the demo application. it was working fine but today when i was testing with a new user to see a demo it showed me this error message 1030 Got error 28 from storage engine After spending some time googling i found it is an error that is related to space of database or temporary files. I tried to fix it but i failed. now i am not even able to start mysql. How can i fix this and i would also like to increase the size to maximum so that i won't face the same issue again and again.

  Does anyone know of a way to chain the proprietary filter properties in CSS. For example I have a div.example and I want to give it a background gradient and a drop shadow.   I'm looking for a way to copy all non-system users from one PC to another. I can get the group and passwd files copied over using this awk -F":" ' $3 > 499 ' etc/passwd >> /etc/passwd awk -F":" ' $3 > 499 ' etc/group >> /etc/group But, how would I go about getting the shadow file copied over since it does not store the UID? Assume that there are over 1000 users, so doing a grep with the usernames, such as egrep '(bob|bill|sarah|sal):' etc/shadow >> /etc/shadow generating the usernames from the awk code above, would be a bit inefficient, but a possible option.

• WebView with NSShadow slowdown

  I have a webview that shows some animated boxes, but it slows down and lags horribly when I put a drop shadow in the view. Without the shadow, the webview contents animate smoothly. I achieved a similar effect as safari/chrome when you do a elastic scroll with the touchpad. Looks nice! But doesnt run as smooth as in my inspirations. I'd like to separate core part from UI part, so at plugin com.site.plugin.ui I created Preferences page where I defined some preferences, which should be used by com.site.plugin.core. I check article at Eclipse site, but it is quite outdated, and linked bug also do not provide much info. So is it possible to do this using standard Eclipse mechanism, or I need use direct low-level API via package org.eclipse.core.runtime.preferences?
