• Tiny flash in safari - very strange bug!

  We have a flash file that in every other browser displays at its correct size (which is something like 1600px) however, in safari it appears tiny. We have also noticed that sometimes when the flash file is not cached it appears at normal size, then after a soft refresh the flash goes tiny again. We are using mootools to include the flash but I've also tried just using flash's HTML/Javascript with the publish function, we still have the same problem with it being tiny in safari. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? Thanks Tom

• Android Release Version and "Waiting for Debugger"

  I know this has been asked before but I still don't have a solution. My first app: developed and debugged on my moto droid and then followed all the release steps, (exported from Eclipse, using my key to sign) including removing the debug in the manifest xml. I copied the resulting apk to the droid, disconnected the usb and installed it by double clicking on the file using Astro. I get the "Waiting for Debugger" message like when I am debugging but it never goes away. Doing something real stupid I know but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

• WCF issues with KnownType for Dictionary

  Hi, I have a service that implements the following DataMember: [DataMember] public Dictionary<string, List<IOptionQueryResult>> QueryResultItems { get; set; } I have the class "OptionQuerySingleResult" which inherits from IOptionQueryResult. Now, I understand that I need to make the OptionQueryResult type "known" to the Service and thus tried to add the KnownType in various ways: [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, OptionQuerySingleResult[]>))] [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, List<OptionQuerySingleResult>>))] [KnownType(typeof(OptionQuerySingleResult)] However, none of those approaches worked and on the client side I'm either getting that deserialization failed or the server simply aborted the request, causing a connection aborted error. Does anyone have an idea on what's the proper way to get this to work? I'd like to add, the if I change the QueryResultItems definition to use the concrete type, instead of the interface, everything works just fine. Thanks, Tom

• ProcessCmdKey - wait for KeyUp?

  Hi, I'm having the following issue in a WinForms app. I'm trying to implement Hotkeys and I need to process Key messages whenever the control is active, no matter if the focus is on a textbox within that control, etc. Overriding ProcessCmdKey works beautifully for this and does exactly what I want with one exception: If a user presses a key and keeps it pressed, ProcessCmdKey keeps triggering WM_KEYDOWN events. However, what I want to achieve is that the user has to release the button again before another hotkey action would trigger (so, if someone sits on the keyboard it would not cause continuous hotkey events). However, I can't find where to catch WM_KEYUP events, so I can set a flag if it should process ProcessCmdKey messages again? Anyone can help out here? Thanks, Tom

  Given your data stored somewhere in a database: Hello my name is Tom I like dinosaurs to talk about SQL. SQL is amazing. I really like SQL. We want to implement a site search, allowing visitors to enter terms and return relating records. A user might search for: Dinosaurs And the SQL: WHERE articleBody LIKE '%Dinosaurs%' Copes fine with returning the correct set of records. How would we cope however, if a user mispells dinosaurs? IE: Dinosores (Poor sore dino). How can we search allowing for error in spelling? We can associate common misspellings we see in search with the correct spelling, and then search on the original terms + corrected term, but this is time consuming to maintain. Any way programatically?

• Mootools not loading fast enough IE6

  Very random and annoying problem with IE6. We keep our common JS files on a resources server so we only have to update them in one place. As well as our custom classes we also keep our build of mootools and more on the resources server and link to it in the head of our sites. This is fine in all the browsers accept IE6. In IE6 it seems to not loads the core quick enough from the external link before trying to process the mootools code in my site.js file. It will go wrong on the first line "windows.addEvent". If i put a mootools core in a folder where the site is though its fine. Does anyone know why it might be doing this and if so a way around it, but still keeping the files on the resources domain? I have tried using all available parameters (drawImage(i, 0, 0, 20, 20, 0, 0, 20, 20)) and that didn't help. What is causing my drawing to stretch and how can I prevent that? Thanks, Tom

• Changing text size on a ggplot bump plot

  Hi, I'm fairly new to ggplot. I have made a bumpplot using code posted below. I got the code from someones blog - i've lost the link.... I want to be able to increase the size of the lables (here letters which care very small on the left and right of the plot) without affecting the width of the lines (this will only really make sense after you have run the code) I have tried changing the size paramater but that always alter the line width as well. Any suggestion appreciated. • Flex: Result event given multiple times

I want to get a special string for encrypting my password. This string is given by my authservice. But when i login i get a multiple times a alert with Done(line 69 in the pastebin code or line 4 in the code on the bottom of this question). But i want that it shows one single time. • FBConnect stream.publish with iphone unknown response?

  Hi All, I am using stream.publish to publish some info to a users wall. This all works fine. I am not using FBStreamDialog because i do not want the user to be able to edit the message..... So i have set up my own UI. It all works fine and the stream is published to the users wall, the only issue is that i do not understand the result obtained from the delegate method: - (void)request:(FBRequest*)request didLoad:(id)result { NSLog(@"result = %@", result); } I need to understand what the result is telling me so that i can handle any errors. Currently the following is being printed in the console but i do not know what this means: result = 100000874992250_117813161591916 Any help or advice regarding this issue would be highly appreciated. • List the names of existing directories from .tgz file in a bash variable

  I would like to find all the directories that are in a .tgz file and that already exist on the system and put the result in a bash variable. I have tried this: EXISTING=`for f in \`tar tzf $ARCHIVE\`; do if [ -d "/tmp/unpacked-data/\$f" ]; then echo \$f; fi; done` with no luck. If I echo the value of $f before the if in the loop, I get all the files, ie this works: EXISTING=`for f in \`tar tzf $ARCHIVE\`; do echo \$f; done` Can someone tell me why the \$f doesn't work in the if statement? • What is the best way for communication between cluster nodes

  I have an application written in a combination of ASP/VB6/VBScript and ASP.NET/C# that consists of a website part, SOAP-like webservice part and a queue processing part processing incoming files in a hotfolder. We are used to running under load balancers (Microsoft or other make). Often we need to communicate between the different load balanced servers. Currently we do this through the SQL Server database that is common for all nodes, however, this comes with a performance penalty as each message requires a transaction and continual polling from the other nodes. I'm sure why. • Redirect Log output to sdcard on customer's phone

  My customers are having a problem with my app, and I have been unable to reproduce the problem on my development phone. How to debug this problem? The android Log class is great, but my customers do not know how to use 'adb' or the USB debug cable. Is there some way to redirect Log output to a file on the phone's SD card? Then the customer could easily email the log file to me. Even if this redirection requires programming on my part, I could at least distribute a 'debug' version of the app. Thanks, Tom

• Using Excel To Read Access Without MS Access On Computer

  I have written code that joins two table in access, using criteria supplied from drop down lists in excel and then returns the data to a specific location on the spreadsheet (titles already on the sheet). This works fine on my box and others with MS Access on the machine, but the purpose of writing this was to give people (associates) that dont have the MS Access on their machines (which is most of them) to be able to do simple queries to the database. When we try to run this on a machine without MS Access, we are getting the error message "Compile Error: Cant find project or library." Since this works fine on any machine so far that has Access, but not the others I am wondering if this is not possible without the actual Access software. Any help or insight would be appreciated. • jQuery Validation Plugin + equalTo Not Working

  Hey guys, Here is what I am currently using to attempt to validate a form. When I press submit with no values entered into the form, I get the error messages for each of the inputs as expected. However, no matter what I put in newpassword2 or newemail2 they never 'pass' validation. I've tried everything from copy and paste to making them one letter each to no success. Perhaps I am not using the equalTo attribute correctly... I've also verified that all the names of the selectors agree with the input id's on the form. Also, all of the inputs are contained within the form, so there aren't any outside of the form tags (I read that was an issue with someone else). $(document).ready(function() { $("#account_data").validate({ rules: { newpassword1: { required: true }, newpassword2: { equalTo: "#newpassword1" }, newemail1: { required: true, email: true }, newemail2: { equalTo: "#newemail1" } } }); }); Any help would be extremely appreciated! • WindowsPhone App data connection FAILS in MarketPlace published App but WORKS in Visual Studio development (same XAP)

  Tearing my hair out(!) My last App update has been accepted and released by MarketPlace but the remote server data connection does NOT work/connect from the downloaded App (from MarketPlace). However, the same App (the accepted XAP) when I'm running it from Visual Studio, using the same remote server address works just fine. WHY!... Has anyone else ever run into anything like this? Here's the remote path: http://www.streamcommunication.com/ZenAwaken/DownloadableCollections.xml I can load that to a browser and retrieve the XML When I'm in Visual Studio I can connect via that path and retrieve the file and consume the data BUT!! The exact same XAP which has been accepted and distributed by Windows Phone marketplace FAILS. Is it possible that MarketPlace does something (encryption?) to the XAP that would corrupt the path string? Any thoughts or experiences would be very helpful! Tom

• Linux: Managing users, groups and applications

  I am fairly new to linux admin so this may sound quite a noob question. I have a VPS account with a root access I need to install Tomcat, Java on it and later other open source applications as well. Installation for all of these is as simple as unzipping the .gz in a folder. My questions are A) Where should I keep all these programs? In Windows, I typically have a folder called programs under c:\ where I unzip all applications. I plan to have something similar here as well. Currently, I have all these under apps folder under/root- which I am guessing is a bad idea B) To what group should Tom belong to ? I would need a user - say Tom who can simply execute these programs. Do I need to create a new group? or just add Tom to some existing group ? C) Finally- Am I doing something really stupid by installing all these application by simply unzipping them? I mean an alternate way would be to use Yup or RPM or something like that to install these applications. Given my familiarity and (tight budget) that seems too much to me. I feel uncomfortable running commands which i don't understand too well

• Why doesn't Linode ever have to shut down for updates?

  I've been using Linode for over a year now, and, unlike some lesser-known VPS hosts I've used, I've never been required to shut down my VPS by Linode. The only restarts have been ones I've initiated. How do they go for years on end without requiring restarts and with no downtime? Isn't downtime inevitable when upgrading some parts of the host system? Do they simply perform as few updates as possible? This isn't meant to be a Linode-specific question; I am only using them as an example because I have experience with them.

• How do I tell if my firewire connection is running as 400 or 800?

  I have a MacBook Pro with FireWire 800 and a freecom external harddrive that has USB3, FireWire 400 and 800. I am using a Nikkai FireWire 800 cable that has 800 connector on one end and a 400 connector on the other end. The 800 connector is attached to the MacBook pro and the 400 connector is attached to the freecom drive. Is there any way to tell what connection has been established? I looked at disk utility and it simply said 'FireWire'. Is there a command-line tool that would give more information? If it's 400, I plan to swap the cable for 800 connector at both ends.

• How can I make my browser(s) finish AJAX requests instead of stopping them when I switch to another page?

  I usually need to deal with things on a page right before switching to yet another page, this ranges from "liking / upvoting a comment or post" up to "an important action" and doesn't always come with feedback on whether the action actually proceeded. This is a huge problem! I assume the action to proceed once I start the particular AJAX request, but because I switch to another page it didn't actually happen because the AJAX request got aborted. This has left me several times with coming back to the page and seeing my action didn't take place at all; to give you an idea how bad this is, this even happened once when commenting on Super User! Is there a way to tell my browser to not drop these AJAX connections but simply let them finish?

• Should we test all our methods?

  So today I had a talk with my teammate about unit testing. The whole thing started when he asked me "hey, where are the tests for that class, I see only one?". The whole class was a manager (or a service if you prefer to call it like that) and almost all the methods were simply delegating stuff to a DAO so it was similar to: SomeClass getSomething(parameters) { return myDao.findSomethingBySomething(parameters); } A kind of boilerplate with no logic (or at least I do not consider such simple delegation as logic) but a useful boilerplate in most cases (layer separation etc.). And we had a rather lengthy discussion whether or not I should unit test it (I think that it is worth mentioning that I did fully unit test the DAO). His main arguments being that it was not TDD (obviously) and that someone might want to see the test to check what this method does (I do not know how it could be more obvious) or that in the future someone might want to change the implementation and add new (or more like "any") logic to it (in which case I guess someone should simply test that logic). This made me think, though. Should we strive for the highest test coverage %? Or is it simply an art for art's sake then? I simply do not see any reason behind testing things like: getters and setters (unless they actually have some logic in them) "boilerplate" code Obviously a test for such a method (with mocks) would take me less than a minute but I guess that is still time wasted and a millisecond longer for every CI. Are there any rational/not "flammable" reasons to why one should test every single (or as many as he can) line of code?

• How far should one take e-mail address validation?

  I'm wondering how far people should take the validation of e-mail address. My field is primarily web-development, but this applies anywhere. I've seen a few approaches: simply checking if there is an "@" present, which is dead simply but of course not that reliable. a more complex regex test for standard e-mail formats a full regex against RFC 2822 - the problem with this is that often an e-mail address might be valid but it is probably not what the user meant DNS validation SMTP validation As many people might know (but many don't), e-mail addresses can have a lot of strange variation that most people don't usually consider (see RFC 2822 3.4.1), but you have to think about the goals of your validation: are you simply trying to ensure that an e-mail address can be sent to an address, or that it is what the user probably meant to put in (which is unlikely in a lot of the more obscure cases of otherwise 'valid' addresses). An option I've considered is simply giving a warning with a more esoteric address but still allowing the request to go through, but this does add more complexity to a form and most users are likely to be confused. While DNS validation / SMTP validation seem like no-brainers, I foresee problems where the DNS server/SMTP server is temporarily down and a user is unable to register somewhere, or the user's SMTP server doesn't support the required features. How might some experienced developers out here handle this? Are there any other approaches than the ones I've listed? Edit: I completely forgot the most obvious of all, sending a confirmation e-mail! Thanks to answerers for pointing that one out. Yes, this one is pretty foolproof, but it does require extra hassle on the part of everyone involved. The user has to fetch some e-mail, and the developer needs to remember user data before they're even confirmed as valid.
