I just installed Windows Vista on a laptop computer.
I was wondering if you could recommend any essential software to be installed on the system (i.e. anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc...)
Thanks
After 2 years my Vista (32-bit) machine now boots quite slowly.
The event viewer tells me two programs comming up slow: explorer.exe and svchost.exe.
Fine. But what can i do that these programs comes up as quickly as before ?
I with few of my flat-mates share internet connection by using ASL cable into one laptop and then making Adhoc private network so that we all can enjoy internet connectivity.
It all worked wonderful few initial days, but now my MS vista is taking much time to identify that adhoc network and it though I am connected to my friend, it takes 5-10 minutes untill I use internet.
Wondering if there is some trick to scheduling a batch file to run in Vista.
I have tried almost every setting/arg I can think of with no result other than an error, or the command window opening then instantly closing without executing the code.
The batch files works fine when I double click to run.
The passwords cached for Network shares on other computers and applications like MSN Live, MS Outlook, Sharepoint portal, Outlook Webmail, etc are lost when I reboot my computer, which runs on Vista.
I always check the Remember password checkbox in applications/login dialogs where ever prompted.
I cannot imagine of a third party program that may clean up this on system restart/shutdown.
Any idea, as to what is going wrong?
One feature I miss from xp is the ability to hover over disks and quickly see their used/total space.
Can anyone let me know if this can be turned on in vista/7 or any other solutions?
Hi there,
On a Windows Vistahome are two user-acounts one with administrator-proîviledge and annother one as a user.
Now it happens that the account with admin-rights doesn't work anymore: Profile not loading...
What can be done to bring this thing-a-magic to fly again?
Peace
Ice
I have still have dial-up(cant afford highspeed) and I am trying to configure my desktop with vista to share that connection with Ubuntu Ive got it all setup but ubuntu wont get on the internet at all. Can yall help me with this problem.
Hello, my computer (a Dell XPS M1330 - Vista x64) hangs randomly. When it happens I can't run the task manager (or another app), nor the Start menu, and when i try to close an application the title bar shows "Not responding".
In the event viewers, nothing particular, excepts the hard shutdown.
(I apologize in advance for my bad english..)
Hi
i want to install internet explorer 6 in windows vista but i can't, is there a way to do?
i just want to test my website on it to fix some css bugs.
Thanks
I am considering creating a Vista install, in VirtualBox, in a minimum configuration.
The Microsoft pages seem consistent on the most important points:
1 GB of system memory
40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
In my experience sometimes these recommendations are accurate. (For example, I have a Windows XP in VirtualBox that generally behaves well running in the stated minimum). If anyone has some practical experience (especially the type that could save me hours of pain), please let me know.
In XP, to ensure a folder opened in a new window, I held down CTRL when I opened (by mouse or keyboard) the folder.
This action is so ingrained to me, I pretty much don't even realise I'm doing it at a conscious level.
Unfortunately, this action apparently hasn't made it to Vista. Is there a new way to do this, or am I just missing something obvious?
I have OS X Server installed. I am using Window Vista on a PC.
But on my network I can't see the OS X server. But I can see other Mac computers in shared but not OS X server.
I am able to ping the IP.
What should I do?
Vista start menu shows your most frequently used apps, which is great, I love it.
However, there are some apps which I use frequently through shell or such, that I do not want to appear on that menu. Winrar, Media Player Classic, Infranview...
I can right click on it to remove it, but it'll return to the menu shortly, how can I set it so that those apps never appear on the start menu.
Thanks.
I can not access Contol panel in my windows vista machine.
As soon as i click the "conrol panel" item in start items, it shows up a window and then its closed automatically ( same happens if i use "control" command).
Is there some program or some registry entry thats restricting it? is ther a way to control this behaviour?
I burned a CD on XP using the built-in burning software and I can read the CD on that machine, but when I insert it into my Vista machine, I can't read the files. It shows the correct volume label, and the correct 'free space', but I can't access the actual files.
Am I missing something obvious?
(Both systems are fully up-to-date)
Hi, at my work computer, a Dell package computer with Vista Business, I turn it on, it shows the Dell boot screen then just hangs forever. Can get into the Bios and boot settings, but other than that, just hangs. What could cause this? No one's been here over the weekend and it was fine on friday.
Thanks.
I noticed everytime my dell inspiron 1420 wakes up from sleep the screen will flicker a lot. some times violently. I'm not sure what the problem is. I have disabled tmm but it didn't fix the flickers. Does anyone have a solution?
Here's my spec:
Dell Inspiron 1420
4GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo T5750
Nvidia Geforce 8400MS
Windows Vista 32bit
Am using ROXIO
1. to copy DVD file to my computer
2. to trim a section of the video
3. to convert the file to wmv and this is where Windows Vista gives the message that the program cannot continue.
4. I have followed all of the instructions from ROXIO support to clean my system and do a new install.
It still does not work
Anybody know how to resolve the problem?
I am creating an intranet website on a Vista 32 machine with IIS7. On my machine it works great! However, when other users on our network try to connect to it they get an error saying "Oops! Internet Explorer could not connect to computername". Perhaps this is because the NTFS and/or IIS permissions are not set correctly.
How do I set the permissions to publish a website on the intranet?
Thanks in advance, Dan
I've got a Vista machine, and I just uninstalled a bunch of programs that someone had installed and wasn't supposed to. My supervisor now wants me to send a list of these programs to the people who have used the computer just for safe keeping.
Is there any way I can find the names of the programs I just uninstalled?
On Windows Vista, I right-click on a folder, Properties, Sharing tab, and either "Advanced Sharing" or "Share"-"Share" causes an error:
Windows File Sharing
This program will not run
Access is denied.
Close
My user account is an "administrator" on this machine.
I think this behavior changed since my computer was added to the new domain recently. I have other folders shared (from long ago), and they continue to be shared just fine.
The idea is to use Vista RFM as a freeware version of Windows to allow Mac users running a Windows-based application via VirtualBox.
Is there a way to make that possible (starting the program automatically in RFM)?
Thanks!
I'm sitting under Vista and the problem is -- though I can see disc number of track in Winamp or some other multimedia players, I cannot sort files by disc number in Windows Explorer.
I've scanned through the whole long list of available properties of files but haven't found "disc number" or similar property.
So is there any way to sort tracks by disc number in Windows Explorer, and if there is, then how to do it?
