  • VMware Player and Ubuntu 12.04 - Full Screen

    I have installed VMware Player 4.0.2 under Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and, apart from having to patch the modules, everything went smoothly. However, there's an irritating behavior when toggling full screen mode: toggling full screen (using Virtual Machine Toggle Full Screen or Ctrl + Alt + Return), minimizing the player and maximizing it again changes the resolution of the guest to some strange one and the player gets "nested" between GNOME3's taskbar as every other of Ubuntu's native windows. To switch to full screen again I have to Ctrl + Alt + Return twice. Can anyone please tell me if this is the nromal, expected behavior? Is there any way of "correcting" it? The host operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and the guest is Windows 7 (both 64 bits).

  • Static IP Address on Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine

    I've setup a VM running Ubuntu 12.04 specifically for local web development and am having some problems ensuring it has a static IP address. A static IP address is important as I'm using the IP address in my hosts file to assign a .local suffix to addresses used both in browser and to connect to the correct database on the VM. Currently, every time I connect to a new network or my VM is assigned a new IP address I need to reconfigure my whole environment which is becoming quite a pain. It also probably doesn't help that the default-lease-time on the Ubuntu VM is set to 1800 by default. At the moment I'm using VMWare Fusion and the Network Adapter is enabled and set to "Autodetect" under Bridged Networking. I've tried to set a static IP address within the dhcpd.conf using the code below: host ubuntu { hardware ethernet 00:50:56:35:0f:f1; fixed-address: 192.168.100.100; } The fixed-address that I've used is also outside the range specified in the subnet block (which in this case is 192.168.100.128 to 192.168.100.254). I've tried adding and removing the network adapter and restarting my Mac after each time to no avail.   • Extensive use of HDD after VmWare Player virtual machine is closed.

    Each time I close virtual machine in VmWare Player I see extensive use of HDD in my system. Basically, whole system becomes unresponsive for about 5-7 minutes. Host system is Windows 7 Utimate x64 SP1 with 6 GB of memory, i3-M350 processor. Virtual machine is Windows XP SP3 x86 (2GB of memory allocated for VM). What can be the cause and what can I do to solve the issue? UPDATE: I am not shutting down the VM, I just close Player window and VM saves it's state. System becomes unresponsive right after VM have saved it state (as indicated by Player) and Player itself have closed.

    My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

After that I copied the boot.bin file to my usb and took it to my Windows OS. After this I burned the boot.bin file to boot.img and boot.iso files. Then I created a new virtual machine and named it booter, when it asked for the .iso file of the OS I want to run I gave it the boot.iso file, about which I told above, then I powered on that virtual machine but it gave me this error PXE-M0F: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM Operating System not found Please tell me what is the main problem and how can I overcome that problem.

  • Setting console resolution in Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware

    I've completed an install of Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware and am running into a problem configuring the console (non-graphical) resolution. When I was running Ubuntu Server 13.04, I ran into the same problem... posted the question here, which I later solved by editing /etc/default/grub thus: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash vga=789" I then ran sudo update-grub, sudo reboot and 13.04 stuck in a larger-size console mode... just what I wanted. BUT when I run the same commands in 13.10, during the reboot it changes to the new screen-res, BUT the screen stays black and I can't interact with it. I power down the VM, go back to a previous snapshot, and try again... and again. Since the hwinfo package is no longer available, I can't run sudo hwinfo --framebuffer to see what options are available. Ideas anyone?   • Moving VMWare Fusion image to Boot Camp

    I have Windows 7 64-bit running in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, but am disappointed with the performance, and so I want to try Boot Camp. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my applications; I just want to somehow copy my VMWare Fusion "disk image" to a Boot Camp partition. My initial thoughts are that I should be able to run a Windows backup program in VMWare Fusion to back up the entire virtual disk, then set up Boot Camp and restore from that backup. However, Googling finds a few posts by people who have tried that and have encountered problems. So, is there a "known good" procedure for doing this?

Is the issue with BackTrack, VmWare, etc.?

  • VMware "boot screen" - add info like contact, phone number, etc.?

    I've tried searching Google and VMware's KB but maybe I'm not typing the right search criteria...only finding ways to fix problems with booting or screen issues. On the default boot screen of a host it looks similar to this picture from GIS: I'm curious if it is possible somehow to make it look like this instead (adding custom details): I know for the most part the info is "useless" since it is administered remotely, etc. But when I deploy standalone hosts to branch offices, it'd be nice for them to see this type of info on the boot screen. I may also include the VMs hosted on it (again on standalone hosts). Normal monitoring, etc. will be done remotely. This is strictly for odd times when the branch contact may say "the electricians are saying they need to turn off this circuit but I have no idea who to call in IT to tell them this box needs to be shut down" or similar. Anyone who has dealt with small branch offices can tell you that if it isn't labeled they easily forget what it is for and will simply say after the incident "I didn't know what it was or who to call." Possible?

  • vmware esxi 5, cant create snapshots and consolidate fails, how to delete old or consolidate redo logs?

    I have a VM that seems to be working ok, but when VMWare DR (or I) tries to create a snap shot, it fails, and when I view the summary page of the VM it has a warning at the top showing that the disks need to be consolidated. So I go to snapshot manager for the VM and choose consolidate (in snapshot manager, there are no snapshots actually listed by the way). If fails with this error: This virtual machine has 255 or more redo logs in a single branch of its snapshot tree. The maximum supported limit has been reached, creating new snapshots will not be allowed. To create new snapshots, please delete old snapshots or consolidate the redo logs. If I browse the data store (which has plenty of free space, 2 TB and this vm is under 40gb), in the vm folder, I do in fact see a bunch of files, numbered all the way to 0255: myvm-000255-ctk.vmdk myvm-000255-delta.vmdk myvm-000255.vmdk How can I clean all this up? Is there an SSH command line command or can I delete some of the files safely? Thanks!

    Hi, I am running FC9 under VMware Fusion 3.0 I wanted to resize my /dev/sda2 partition. In order to do that I did the following: 0. changed the size of the vmware file (under VMware settings). 1. rebooted the host to rescue mode without mounted disks 2. fdisk - removed & added /dev/sda2 - i had bigger /dev/sda2 3. lvm pvresize /dev/sda2 4. lvm pvdisplay - it showed me bigger size on /dev/VolGroup00 for /dev/sda2 5. lvm vgchange -a y - device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument - 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active This is not true because there is no /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 My whole "/" disappeared. dmsetup table, shows: VolGroup00-LogVol01: 0 2097152 linear 8:2 38338944 VolGroup00-LogVol00: Can some one help me to solve this?     Anyone encounter a problem in which the Guest OS in VMware Server randomly shuts down? This has happened about once a month, where VMware Server just shuts down ALL guests OS. The host machine is fine, and you can log into the web management of VMware Server, it's just all guest OS get shutdown with no apparent reason. Even the logs say vmware guest os so and so was shut down, but no details why. This is not just one one machine, we have VMware server installed on three different PowerEdge servers and they all have encounter the same problem. We've tripped checked all settings and nothing is out of the ordinary.

    I have a VMWare Player running a VM at all times. However I want the server to run that Virtual Machine on boot (without logging in). This will allow me basically to restart the Server and when it loads to the login screen it's already running VMWare. Any ideas? I have tried reading up on it however websites suggest VMWare Server. This is no longer backed by VMWare anymore. So I am looking to either make VMWare Player a service or if anyone else has any other ideas? Running Win 7 on my server btw Thanks for looking.

  • VMware Fusion on MacBook Pro running Vista, not working after installing a wireless card

    A tech friend installed VMware on my Mac so I could use my Windows programs as well. It worked great until I inserted my Sierra 881 USB wireless card while in VMware trying to get to the internet while on the road. It worked briefly, then the AT&T Communication manager won't respond when you click on the icon, I can't open Network and Sharing center, I can't sync my palm - shows it can't connect. Looks like it messed up several things, along with not being able to connect to the internet while in windows. This wireless cards works directly from the Mac - but I need internet while in Windows for some work I am doing. How do I uninstall this - when I try - it just gives me an endless reloading circle - not doing anything. I really need to sync my palm and get back to the way it was. I don't know much about VMware at all and I don't have access to my friend right now to get help.

  • Small hiccup with VMware Player after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04

    The upgrade process Finally, it was time to upgrade to a new LTS version of Ubuntu - 12.04 aka Precise Pangolin. I scheduled the weekend for this task and despite the nickname of Mauritius (Cyber Island) it took roughly 6 hours to download nearly 2.400 packages. No problem in general, as I have spare machines to work on, and it was weekend anyway. All went very smooth and only a few packages required manual attention due to local modifications in the configuration. With the new kernel 3.2.0-24 it was necessary to reboot the system and compared to the last upgrade, I got my graphical login as expected. Compilation of VMware Player 4.x fails A quick test on the installed applications, Firefox, Thunderbird, Chromium, Skype, CrossOver, etc. reveils that everything is fine in general. Firing up VMware Player displays the known kernel mod dialog that requires to compile the modules for the newly booted kernel. Usually, this isn't a big issue but this time I was confronted with the situation that vmnet didn't compile as expected ("Failed to compile module vmnet"). Luckily, this issue is already well-known, even though with "Failed to compile module vmmon" as general reason but nevertheless it was very easy and quick to find the solution to this problem. In VMware Communities there are several forum threads related to this topic and VMware provides the necessary patch file for Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. In case that you are still on Workstation 7.x or Player 3.x there is another patch file available. After download extract the file like so: tar -xzvf vmware802fixlinux320.tar.gz and run the patch script as super-user: sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh This will alter the existing installation and source files of VMware Player on your machine. As last step, which isn't described in many other resources, you have to restart the vmware service, or for the heart-fainted, just reboot your system: sudo service vmware restart This will load the newly created kernel modules into your userspace, and after that VMware Player will start as usual. Summary Upgrading any derivate of Ubuntu, in my case Xubuntu, is quick and easy done but it might hold some surprises from time to time. Nonetheless, it is absolutely worthy to go for it. Currently, this patch for VMware is the only obstacle I had to face so far and my system feels and looks better than before. Happy upgrade!   • Wire VMWare Player NIC to a VLAN in Ubuntu 8.04.3

    I've got VMWare Player 2.5.x installed on a Ubuntu 8.04.3 host running CentOS 5.3 running Cobbler. VMWare Player has two NICs (I actually took this image from an ESXi image, converted it to Player 2.x image via VMWare Standalone Converter). I've also setup a vlan (vlan5) on the host with 10.0.0.x and I'd like Cobbler to use that VLAN to serve any incoming requests. How do I wire up my VMWare to use the VLAN I've setup? Just one of the NICs. What I'm trying to do is to offer a laptop with a VM that our sysadmins can go, plug it into a box (which does not connect to the interwebs) and install RHEL images via cobbler. So essentially, its a cross over cable from the network port on the lappy to the Dell server box. PXE boot in the dell box and install RHEL. I have the cobbler working fine under VMWare ESXi but not so on the VMWare Player because of the VLAN issue - I think. Any ideas?
