The cost of maintaining these things can run up to the entire cost of building another room or, in some cases, a whole new house. The rationale for home security is the same for national security. A nation maintains an army whether it has enemies or not; so, whether burglars will come or not, we have to prepare for the eventuality. Hence, we end up spending for something we might never put into the actual use it was intended for. You buy a pistol and when a burglar breaks in you fire the gun either to scare or disable the intruder. We hope we will never have to use these things; but we still buy them for the peace of mind that comes from knowing we can secure or protect our family and home.

  • Add domain user as local admin in Windows 7 using VPN to connect to domain

    I am rebuilding my work computer from scratch and need to add my domain user as a local admin on my computer. I have successfully added my PC to the domain, but I cannot add my domain user account to the local admins. I have tried to do the following: Connect to the work domain using a Windows VPN Add my computer to the work domain Start right click on Computer Manage - go to Users and Groups right click on Administrators group and add my domain user The problem is that after adding my domain user to the Administrators group, I don't see my domain user under the Local Users group. When I try to log on as my domain user I get the following error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request Any ideas?

  • Home ADSL Modem Dropping Packets?

    I know this is supposed to be a "pro" forum, but I'm hoping someone can help since my ISP isn't doing much to try and fix things. My ISP has given me a DSL modem / Router combo - a ADB / Pirelli P.DG A2100N and I have a 4096 / 767 kbps connection. I use it purely as modem and router, and have the wireless AP feature turned off. I run it to a Ubiquiti Networks Toughswitch and use a Ubiquiti UAP as the wireless access point - although I've ran tests directly wired to the router with nothing else connected, and still see the same issues. I've been having issues where latency suddenly spikes from 8ms to google.com to 250+ if someone does anything on the internet. If I run a speedtest or something, I can see latencies above 3000ms. Regularly when downloading something, even if the speed is throttled to , it can get random drops to 0kbps every few seconds. Online gaming is impossible because I notice the sudden lag-outs in the connection, and video streams or VoIP drop out as well - it's not at all consistent.   • Ubuntu user credentials, file permissions

    I am using Ubuntu 10.10 for web development by using the symfony framework. Normally I install Ubuntu Lamp (Turnkey edition), log in as root and configure all the necessary software in the server needed to work with symfony. (Samba, symfony etc) The problem is when I am root the file permissions are not set right for the Samba and symfony systems. All things I do/create in the terminal (CLI) of Ubuntu create file permissions for the user root. Off course I know how to change them afterwards but that takes up time I could spend programming. When ready I am using the box via my network, creating several site directorys directly from my pc on the server. There are multiple sites on this developer server as directorys under /var/www/ there are no virtual hosts. My question is how to create or set a user after installation of Ubuntu with the right credentials and rights?

  • Proper policy for user setup

    I am still fairly new to linux hosting and am currently working on some policies for our production ubuntu servers. The servers are public facing webservers with ssh access from the public network and database servers with ssh access from the internal private network. We are a small hosting company so in the past with windows servers we used one user account and one password that each of us used internally. Anyone outside of the company who needed to access the server for FTP or anything else had their own user account. Is that okay to do in the linux world, or would most people recommend using individual accounts for each person who needs to access the server?

  • Does Windows Home Server support folder redirection?

    Windows provides the ability to redirect specific user folders to server locations, using a group policy extension called Folder Redirection. The Wikipedia article and Microsoft's marketing page for Windows Home Server suggests a tons of great features, but I don't see anything about specifically about Folder Redirection. I currently run a domain controller in the home so that I can push the folder redirection group policy down to all PCs. Windows Home Server looks like a better fit, but I'd hate to give up on the ease of folder redirection to automatically save all documents, music, pictures to the file server. Any thoughts?

    Hi all, I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance!   • Restore Your PC from Windows Home Server

    If your computer crashes or you get a virus infection that makes it unrecoverable, doing a clean install can be a hassle, let alone getting your data back. If you’re backing up your computers to Windows Home Server, you can completely restore them to the last successful backup. Note: For this process to work you need to verify the PC you want to restore is connected to your network via Ethernet. If you have it connected wirelessly it won’t work. Restore a PC from Windows Home Server On the computer you want to restore, pop in the Windows Home Server Home Computer Restore disc and boot from it. If you don’t have one already made, you can easily make one following these instructions. We have also included the link to the restore disc below. Boot from the CD then select if your machine has 512MB or RAM or more. The disc will initialize… Then choose your language and keyboard settings. Hopefully if everything goes correctly, your network card will be detected and you can continue. However, if it doesn’t like in our example, click on the Show Details button. In the Detect Hardware screen click on the Install Drivers button. Now you will need to have a USB flash drive with the correct drivers on it. It has to be a flash drive or a floppy (if you happen to still have one of those) because you can’t take out the Restore CD. If you want to make sure you have the correct drivers on the USB flash drive, open the Windows Home Server Console on another computer on your network. In the Computers and Backup section right-click on the computer you want to restore and select View Backups. Select the backup you want to restore from and click the Open button in the Restore or view Files section. Now drag the entire contents of the folder named Windows Home Server Drivers for Restore to the USB flash drive. Back to the machine you’re trying to restore, insert the USB flash drive with the correct drivers and click the Scan button. Wait a few moments while the drivers are found then click Ok then Continue.   The Restore Computer Wizard starts up… Enter in your home server password and click Next. Select the computer you want to restore. If it isn’t selected by default you can pull it up from the dropdown list under Another Computer. Make certain you’re selecting the correct machine. Now select the backup you want to restore. In this example we only have one but chances are you’ll have several. If you have several backups to choose from, you might want to check out the details for them. Now you can select the disk from backup and and restore it to the destination volume. You might need to initialize a disk, change a drive letter, or other disk management tasks, if so, then click on Run Disk Manger. For example we want to change the destination drive letter to (C:).   After you’ve made all the changes to the destination disk you can continue with the restore process. If everything looks correct, confirm the restore configuration. If you need to make any changes at this point, you can still go back and make them. Now Windows Home Server will restore your drive. The amount of time it takes will vary depend on the amount of data you have to restore, network connection speed, and hardware. You are notified when the restore successfully completes. Click Finish and the PC will reboot and be restored and should be working correctly. All the updates, programs, and files will be back that were saved to the last successful backup. Anything you might have installed after that backup will be gone. If you have your computers set to backup every night, then hopefully it won’t be a big issue.   Conclusion Backing up the computers on your network to Windows Home Server is a valuable tool in your backup strategy. Sometimes you may only need to restore a couple files and we’ve covered how to restore them from backups on WHS and that works really well.     Here is what I have: 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV, 5+1 speaker system, lots of original Karaoke CDs, and of course, a microphone. To set up a karaoke entertainment system, what kind of hardware do I need? Are there any standalone karaoke players out there? I hope my only option is not having to connect my laptop to TV. I already have karaoke software on my laptop but I wanna step up to a higher level without the help of a computer.

    I wanted to set VIMHOME variable this way(common to windows and linux), let $VIMHOME=expand("%:p")."/..", so that VIMHOME is "~/.vim" in linux or "path/to/vimfiles" in windows. I put this in a var.vim file and placed this in the plugin directory. It loads properly, but VIMHOME is set only to "./..". How do I get the full path of a file using expand? Is there an easy way to set VIMHOME?

  • Poor home office network performance and cannot figure out where the issue is

    This is the most bizarre issue. I have worked with small to mid size networks for quite a long time and can say I'm comfortable connecting hardware. Where you will start to lose me is with managed switches and firewalls. The Issue The breakdown here is at item 5. No matter what I do I cannot have a switch at 5 and have to run everything wireless regardless of router. Issues related to using a switch (point 5 above) SpeedTest is good. Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate at all. Usually cannot ping other devices even on the same switch although, when able, ping times are good. Eventual lose of connectivity and can "sometimes" be restored by unplugging everything for several days, not minutes or hours but we're talking a week if at all. Directly connect to computer gives good internet connection however throughput to other devices connected to firewall is at best horrible. Yet printing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as they are connected via wireless. I have to force the RV220W to 1000Mb on the respective port if using a Gig Switch Issues related to using wireless in place of a switch (point 5 above) Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate. SpeedTest is good. Bottom line Internet speeds are awesome. By the way, Comcast went WAY above and beyond to make sure it was not them. They rewired EVERYTHING which did solve internet drops. Computer to computer connections are garbage Cannot get switch at 5 to work, yet other at 4 has never had an issue. Direct connection, bypass switch, is good for DHCP and internet. DNS must be on server, not firewall. Cisco insists its my switches but as you can see I have used four and two different cables with the same result. My gut feeling is something is happening with routing. But I'm not smart enough to know that answer. I run a lot of VM's at 5-c-3, could that cause it? What's different compared to my previous house is I have introduced Gigabit hardware (firewall/switches/computers). Some of my computers might have IPv6 turned on if I haven't turned it off already. I'm truly at a loss and hope anyone has some crazy idea how to solve this. Bottom line, I need a switch in my office behind the firewall. I've changed everything. The real crux is I will find a working solution and, again, after days it will stop working. So this means I cannot isolate if its a computer since I have to use them. Oh and a solution is not throwing more money at this. I'm well into $1k already. Yah, lame.

  • All the Gear and No Idea: Suggestions for re-designing my home/office/entertainment network

    Help/ Advice/ Suggestions please: I have a load of kit that I love but which currently operate in disconnected, sometimes counter-productive way. Because I never really had a masterplan I just added these things one after another and connected them up in ad hoc ways. Since I bought my Macbook I've found I spend much less time on the MacPro that was until then my main machine. Perversely, as my job involves writing .Net software, I spend a lot of Mac time actually inside a Windows 7 VM. I stream media from the HP box to the PS3 and thus to the TV, but its not without its limitations/annoyances. We listen to each other's iTunes libraries but the music files are all over the place and it would be good to know they were all safely in one location (and fully backed up). I need to come up with a strategy that will allow me to use all the kit for work, play (recording live music, making tunes, iMovie work), pushing/streaming media to the TV and sharing files with my other half (she uses a Windows laptop and her iPod touch). Ideally I'd like to be able to work on any of the machines and have a shared homedrive that was visible to all machines so all my current files were synced up wherever i was. It would be great if I could access everything securely and quickly over the web. I'd also like to be able to set up a background backup process. The kit list thus far: Apple MacPro 8GB/3x250GB RAID0 + 1TB Apple MacBook Pro 13" 8GB/250GB - I spend a lot of my work time on a Windows 7 VM on this. Crappy Acer laptop (for children's use - iPlayer, watching movies/tv files) HP Proliant Server 4GB/80GB+160GB+300GB Sun Ultra 10 2 x 80GB (old, but in top-notch condition) PS3 160GB iPod Classic 2 x 8GB iPod Touch Observations: Part of the problem is our dual use of Windows and OS X - we can't go for a pure NT style roaming profile. Because the server is also used for hosting test/beta applications and a SQL Server db, it can't be dedicated to file serving. The two Macs really could do with sharing a roaming profile or similar. I'd love to be able to do something useful with the Ultra 10. My other half has been trying to throw it away for over five years now and regularly ask what function it serves in my study :-( I've got no shortage of 500GB external USB hard drives iMovie files are very large and ideally would be processed on a RAID system. Apple's TimeMachine isn't so great. If anyone could suggest all or part of a setup that would fulfil some of my requirements I'd be very grateful. I am willing to consider purchasing one or two more bits of kit (an Apple TV and a Squeezebox have been moted by friends) if they will help make efficiencies rather than add to the chaos and confusion.   • Problems setting up home web server

    Has anyone been able to get a server working with the router smcwbr14t-g? Although I have been able to get Apache set up correctly and my website works on the internal IP 192.168.2.101, I've been running into a dead end when trying to get it to show up on my external IP. In my router, there is no option for port forwarding, but there are options for a 'virtual server'. Following the manual, I have it set up like this: http://imgur.com/zrcV7.png I also disabled the firewall. I configured Apache to listen to ports 80, 81, and 443, none of which solved the problem. However, the IP's 192.168.2.101:443 and :81 load fine. The problem is that I still cannot load the web site from my external IP, either from my computer or outside.

  • Ideas for home media server with Dell laptop?

    Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

  • Windows 2008 as home file server and more

    I currently have a freenas-unit as a NAS, and a Win2k8R2-unit as server. However I would like to consolidate these to units in one. What I really like about the freenas-unit is the ZFS filesystem. And the only reason I care about the ZFS filesystem is the easy way I can grow an existing filesystem just by inserting a new drive. How would this work in Win2k8? If I setup my unit with a separate drive as C: and a 1TB drive as D:. The D: would then be segmented into d:\Videos d:\Music d:\Pictures. When everything gets close to filling the storage-drive, I would like to expand the storage, but I wouldn't want to have E:\Videos or d:\Videos2 (using the NTFS folder mount thingy). I still want all my Videos to reside in D:\Videos and I want the OS to decide which drive it's going to be stored on... Some kind of on-the-fly jbod expansion :) Is this at all possible in Windows 2008?

  • A home router for torrents, gaming, webbing and detailed QoS [closed]

    I want to plug in an external HD on it to torrent up never ending (mostly for seeding), with lowest priority. It should even automatically completely stop if it disturbs my net usage, and go back in later. And I want to be able to give gaming (or my computer) the highest priority, because of its ping requirements. It should be above even of Skype and any voip, which also have high priority. Web surfing and "youtubing" comes in the middle - it won't matter much if it delays a second or two. Finally, interface as simple as possible. It's fine if it's command line setup, but it needs to have a GUI. What are my options for routers / firmwares as described? Maybe Gargoyle? Or even Time Capsule? It seems to me good old DD-WRT isn't the best option out there anymore. I wonder what else could cover these grounds.

  • How to get data from a borked Windows Home Server

    Yesterday we had a power surge, followed by a power outage. This left my WHS borked: powering on just gives to a flashing blue light (the led on the power supply also flashes green) - no fan or boot activity, nothing. I urgently needed some files off there in the short term (and the 500GB of photos, music, personal video etc in the long term) so I took the hard drive out and put it in my computer. The files and folders showed up, but I couldn't access them - clicking on an image gave an invalid image error in Picasa, I couldn't play MP3s etc. I changed the ownership and permissions of the files, still nothing. I booted in with a LiveCD, the same: files appear, but won't open. Is there anything else I can do? I'm now wondering if it was just the power cable that's broken, but if so, why can;t I access my files from the hard drive? If it is the power cable, and I replace that and the hard drive, will I have done any harm messing around with ownership and file permissions?

    I have IIS7 on my computer, and I can access it through other computers in my house on the same network through my computer's IP address - 192.168.1.10x Instead of typing in http : //192.168.1.10x/ I want to be able to go to http : //somename/ I know you can change the hosts file to add it but I'd have to do that on each computer and I'd still have to type in the IP to access it from my iPod/Wii... etc.

  • Establish direct cable connection between Windows 8 PCs in home network

    I'm running two PCs, a desktop and a laptop with Windows 8 Release Preview ("Build 8400"). They are connected to the same router in infrastructure mode, thereby having wireless internet. Due to often file synchronization between the machines I want to establish a cable connection that allows direct file transfer, without needing to use the wireless. When I plug in the cable (normal, not cross-over), I see in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections": "Ethernet - unidentified Network" on both PCs. Transferring a file between both still only uses the WiFi via the Router. I noticed that when turning off the wifi on one PC, I can set up a shared internet connection that will work via Ethernet-cable, but since sometimes only one PC runs, sometimes the other one, I do not want to have the internet of one machine to be dependent on the other one being switched on. I do not have a crossover-cable, but since I did connect the PCs already successfully (just without both being on the internet), I'm sure that this should also work with a normal ethernet cable.
