• IIS8 behind a VPN + Windows Server 2012 - how to properly bind IP+Port

  This is my first question so I hope I'm going to give you enough information. I'm running Windows Server 2012 within the Hyper-V environment of my Windows 8 machine. Within Windows Server 2012 I'm running a VPN tool based on openVPN to hide my real IP. When I run IIS8 with the VPN disconnected it works flawlessly through the Internet (port 80 forwarded correctly). But as soon as I connect to the VPN I can't reach my site through the domain anymore. Now I tried basically everything I know which is why I'm asking you guys. I tried binding IIS8 to the IP of my virtual ethernet card. I tried changing the priority of the NIC through the "Network and sharing center" via the advanced tab. I used ipconfig /flushdns in case there was something wrong in the DNS handling. Hell, I even turned off the Windows firewall. I also used a port scanner to verify the problem. The webserver is reachable on port 80 with VPN disconnected and immediately gets unreachable on connect. Theoretically both IPs (my regular one AND the VPN) should be reachable or at least not impair the other one right? Do you have any other suggestion? Do I have to route something somewhere somehow?

• SCCM 2012 Clients no longer detecting

  Here is the scenario I had a fully functioning SCCM 2012 site server with the DP, MP, SUP, Application catalog, etc. roles configured and working. There is only one server on this site. Everything was great but i was not happy with SUP, so i decided to create a separate WSUS server and configure Windows Updates through GPOs. That setup worked great as well so i went ahead and removed the SUP role from SCCM and removed the WSUS feature from my SCCM server (they were configured on the same SCCM Server). I did not notice any problems right away. A couple days later i noticed that the OSD deployments were giving errors, and after a couple hours of trying suggestions from Google, i was able to uninstall PXE and make a few changes and reinstall with WDS to get it working again. Again, thought everything was fine and continued on. The last couple days i have noticed that any new machine deployed or installing the Client will show in the SCCM console as "No" Client. The client machines will show connected to a site but the software center shows "IT Organization" instead of our site like the previous clients. The existing clients all seem to be functioning normally. they still receive application distributions and configuration baselines, etc. Reinstalling, uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing does not fix the problems and this happens on all new clients. ClientLocation.log shows it connecting to the correct MP.   Our system moved from Windows Server 2003(Enterprise SP2) & IIS 6. And new system is Windows Server 2012(Standard) and IIS 6(for smtp mail) & 8.   I am using the new Storage Spaces feature in Windows Server 2012. I have the following disks: FriendlyName CanPool OperationalStatus HealthStatus Usage Size ------------ ------- ----------------- ------------ ----- ---- PhysicalDisk2 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk3 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk4 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk5 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB There is also a separate OS disk. The above disks are part of a single storage pool: FriendlyName OperationalStatus HealthStatus IsPrimordial IsReadOnly ------------ ----------------- ------------ ------------ ---------- Pool OK Healthy False False Within this storage pool some virtual disks are defined, see below: FriendlyName ResiliencySettingNa OperationalStatus HealthStatus IsManualAttach Size me ------------ ------------------- ----------------- ------------ -------------- ---- Docs Mirror OK Healthy False 500 GB Data Mirror Degraded Warning False 500 GB Work Mirror Degraded Warning False 2 TB Now the virtual disks are all running normal 2-way mirror, but two of the virtual disks are degraded. This is probably because one of the physical disks was offline for a short period of time. However, now the virtual disk cannot be repaired, even though, all physical disks are healthy. There is plenty of available space in the storage pool. This I cannot understand so I was hoping for some help, on how to resolve this? • Best Practice - SQL 2012 & IIS in VMWare

  We are pretty new to VMWare and looking for some thoughts on our environment. We have a VMWare cluster that has on one host: VM#1: MS Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise & SQL Server 2012 VM#2: MS Windows 2008 R2 Standard & IIS The IIS asp.net app talks directly to the SQL Server. We had this similar environment on physical servers a few months ago and just recently moved to the virtualized environment. Regarding the setup, we have not tweaked any of the vm resource parameters -- all is set as standard and all is working. What is observed is that the VMs seem to spool down and we get lags in response. Of course this sin't as fast as the old physical environment, but I am wondering if: *is it a good idea to run the SQL server and the IIS server on the same host? They are the only two VMs on it. The host is a new Dell R620 with 192 gb mem. does it make sense to change any CPU or memory reservations when it doesn't seem like there is any contention is there a way to keep the VMs spooled up to eliminate delays? This is a brand new squeaky clean vanilla install. What are your thoughts?

• DNS manager in Windows Server 2012 Essentials - My one server appears twice

  I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials. It works pretty good although I'm working on some DNS improvements. Something that seems a little weird is in DNS Manager, my server appears twice. Once as hostname and once as hostname.mydomain.local. They seem to be identical and locked in sync. If I change one, the other follows. Is this normal? Does anyone know why I have this? I'm talking about the top level on the navigation. The very top is DNS and then these two below. Zones, forwarders etc are below them. I've found a couple of forum posts of people asking the same thing but no useful answer. All tutorials etc I can find with screenshots show only one which makes me uncomfortable. The server was installed out of the box as standard with the wizards. I know about the recommendation not to use .local but the wizards didn't give me any other option.

• DirectAccess Server firewall rules blocking ports

  I have configured DirectAccess on my Server 2012 Essentials box and most of it works great - I can remotely access the server via RDP and the default IIS website on port 80. However, I can't access anything that uses other ports. For this example, the Team Foundation Server website. The only way to access it is by accessing http://localhost:8080/tfs on the server directly - even when using http://servername:8080/tfs or http://192.168.1.100:8080/tfs won't work. I've tried adding the ports to the NAT exceptions using Set-NetNatTransitionConfiguration –IPv4AddressPortPool and while that has allowed some ports used internally (Deluge, for example) it hasn't allowed me access to the URL. I think I've narrowed it down to the "DirectAccess Server Settings" Group Policy that is created when configuring DirectAccess. When I disable the link for this GPO, the TFS site works again, but the default IIS site stops working (but RDP still works). I already have rules in the firewall on the server for TFS and before enabling this Group Policy (so before configuring DirectAccess) I could access both sites. Does anybody have any suggestions for things I can change to allow access to both? I've uploaded the full GPO report and my Remote Access Configuration Summary for more details.

• Internet sharing over LAN on Windows Server 2012

  I have a DSL modem connected to a server (ON NIC1) running Windows Server 2012 and 7 computers (running Windows 7 32-Bit) connected to a server though a network switch (ON NIC2). I shared the internet connection from the server through DHCP so I am able to access the internet from those 7 computers, but I am unable to: Access Google.com Activate Windows Update Windows An error is arising that says UNABLE TO ACTIVATE WINDOWS Activation Error Code: 0x80072EE2 Firewall and Anti-Virus are off on both the Server and the Clients. Is there is any additional setting that I want to do?

• HyperV management through Windows 8

  Consider the following setup: 1 Hypervisor 3 Clients (Server 2012 with AD, Server 2012, Windows 8). Now we can remote desktop into the Hypervisor and manage the VMs with the manager. This also works from the Server 2012 (I installed the manager there). But it doesn't work from the Windows 8 machine. All machines are in the same domain. Am I forgetting something? I followed this long page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794756(v=ws.10).aspx But I find it so weird that it works for the same user on Windows Server 2012, but not on Windows 8.

• WSUS is not using Akamai CDN for syncronisation source

  I've just installed a WSUS onto our network, and I'm currently doing the initial sync. I've found that WSUS does not seem to be talking to an Akamai cache, but rather with MS directly. This is contrary to what I've always thought regarding Windows Update traffic. Tcpdump of our WSUS server doing initial sync... As you can see it's speaking with 65.55.194.221. For me to speak to this IP, I have to go over international transit links. But it seems like I shouldn't have to do this. NOTE: I've haven't confirmed if a WUA speaks with Akamai, just looking at WSUS as all WUAs will use our internal WSUS from now on. We'll be looking to join an IX shortly with the hopes of peering with an Akamai cache and have very fast access to Windows Updates. Before I let this drive my motivations for an IX at all I want to first confirm it's actually possible for WSUS to speak with an Akamai cache. I know this is somewhat networking related, but I feel like it has more to do with WSUS than anything, so someone who knows WSUS better than me will likely be able to figure this out.

• Three monitor setup not working on Server 2012

  Using an ATI firepro 4800 card, with three monitors connected (1 dvi, 2 displayport) on Server 2008 R2 worked fine. Ive now moved to a new machine, although identical spec, with a fresh Server 2012 install, and cannot get a three display output - only two. When I try to extend the display on to the third monitor, I get the message "The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings" The machine is a Dell Precision T1600. Any help appreciated.

  I have Windows Server 2012 Essentials and I'm trying to set up Anywhere Access so I can remotely access files.  This feature was really easy to access in Windows Home Server and I'm trying to duplicate that functionality here.   I've tried going through the Anywhere Access wizard several times but I can't get past the SSL Certificates step.  I don't want to purchase a certificate; is there any other way to enable remote file access?

• Adding and using a Domain Admin during OSD, in MDT

  So during my Windows 7 OSD. Going by Company Politics I'm suppose to A: Disabled the standardlized Administrator (Done, can do that in task sequence) B: Create a new Administrator called 'ITadmin' and set a fixed password C: Join a Domain (Done that aswell in the Task Sequence) D: Use a Domain Admin to install programs that would otherwise give problems if attempted to install through Local Admin, like Dynamics AX As written I join the computer to the Domain During the OSD, and as Result have the correct Domain Admins added as Administrators through GPO, but I don't know how to use them. I'm looking at CustomSettings.ini in the MDT pack and thinking its gotta be possible to do it from here? or from the unattend.xml in pseudo here is what I wanna Add: AddLocalAdmin: ITadmin Password: 1234 UseThisAccountToInstallOSD: Domain\Install_User Password: 1234 Any help appreciated, can't seem to google my way out of this one.

• How does SSMS and SQL Server Licensing work?

  Could not get a efficient enough answer from MSFT or some of their vendors. Trying to determine exactly how the licensing works before dropping the money on it. Looking to get Server/CAL. We will have the server at our datacenter and then be using SSMS remote on each developers computer. That is, installing SSMS on all developers machine. I am not familiar with MSFT licensing (postgresql & mysql). If I were to pay for the server license and 5 CALs does that mean we can install SSMS locally on each machine. Does each CAL have a specific lic. # that is entered when installing SSMS? We were messing with just the trial edition and the only way I know of installing SSMS is using the full sql server install and choosing only SSMS, it still requires a license number. Any information would be very useful.
