  • Huge HDD response time in Resource monitor

    Just bought all parts for a computer and put it together and installed a fresh version of windows 7. After a while, when using the computer it gets very slow, and even closing down windows can take several minutes. I started to look in the resource monitor and though I found the answer watching my hdd. The thing is that the hdd completes all tests in Seagate's SeaTools for Windows successfully. Which makes me doubt on the problem and weather I can send it in to get an replacement. Suggestions on what it could be and what I can do about it? Here a screenshoot from the resource monitor:

  • How to set the location of a WPF window?

I want WPF dialog comes just above the hyperlink.. Please let me know how can I acheive this or how to set the location of the dialog so that it just comes above the hyperlink.

And I want this string to contain the rich text and than bind it to the column contents. Is that possible? Would really appreciate any help!

  • Creating a Custom Design-Time Environment

    Hello all, My question is related to the design-time support of WPF. From MSDN I read, The WPF Designer provides a framework and a public API which you can use to implement custom adorners, tools, property editors, and designers. But the vast majority of the examples I have found are trivial, and do not illustrate much concerning the creation of a customized designer in an existing WPF application. We have migrated our application from Windows Forms to WPF over the past year, and the next step will be to take an existing WinForms Panel designer, and rewrite it in WPF. Suffice it to say that this will be a huge project. But I don't even know where to begin. I am wondering if any of you have had similar experiences writing a customized designer for a WPF application, and what it was like. Even better, if you could compare and contrast the functionality between the WinForms designer and the WPF designer, or explain the transition from the former to the latter, that would be helpful. If you know of any simple examples that demonstrate a customized design environment (with custom controls, etc.) that would be extremely beneficial. All in all, I am just wondering if many people have undertaken this yet, and what their results have been. EDIT: To clarify, yes, I am talking about hosting a WPF designer. It appears that this may not even be possible, which is a huge setback. Here is a screenshot of our current WinForms designer. As you can see, it is used to create customized user interfaces. You can drag custom controls onto it and design them, then put the panel into a "run mode" in which all of the controls become functional. Short of spending months writing our designer, would this be possible in WPF? What about .NET 4.0 and VS2010? Will those add any designer functionality?

  • Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

    I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. The second CSC command line has these additional arguments: /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\VisualApp.g.resources" /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\CAP.Visual.Properties.Resources.resources" I hate to post   • Override the neutral language of a specific resource file within an assembly

    I have an assembly that contains several resource files. Most of them have the neutral language 'nl' (Dutch, specified on the assembly as the neutral language), so I don't specify the 'nl' in their filenames. However, I'm putting strings in the English language in some other resource files (they are internal error messages) and I will never provide Dutch translations of them. If I name those resource files something like 'Errors.en.resx', no designer class is generated (breaks the build) because there is no 'Errors.resx'. This is annoying because now I have to put 'en' strings into a 'nl'-implied resource file and I really don't want to translate those strings to 'nl' or provide empty strings just to satisfy the compiler. Is there a way to override the neutral language on a specific resource file or perhaps somehow have the 'Errors.en.resx' build a designer class?

In the same way i should create many sucj resource file. please help me.

  • Changing where a resource is pulled during runtime?

    I have a website that goes out to multiple clients. Sometimes a client will insist on minor changes. For reasons beyond my control, I have to comply no matter how minor the request. Usually this isn't a problem, I would just create a client specific version of the user control or page and overwrite the default one during build time or make a configuration setting to handle it. Now that I am localizing the site, I'm curious about the best way to go about making minor wording changes. Lets say I have a resource file called Resources.resx that has 300 resources in it. It has a resource called Continue. English value is "Continue", the French value is "Continuez". Now one client, for whatever reason, wants it to say "Next" and "Après" and the others want to keep it the same. What is the best way to accomodate a request like this? (This is just a simple example). The only two ways I can think of is to Create another Resources.resx specific to the client, and replace the .dll during build time. Since I'd be completely replacing the dll, the new resource file would have to contain all 300 strings. The obvious problem being that I now have 2 resource files, each with 300 strings to maintain. Create a custom user control/page and change it to use a custom resource file. e.g. SignIn.ascx would be replaced during the build and it would pull its resources from ClientName.resx instead of Resources.resx. Are there any other things I could try? Is there any way to change it so that the application will always look in a ClientResources.resx file for the overridden values before actually look at the specified resource file?

  • MVC Portable Areas Enhancement &ndash; Embedded Resource Controller

    MvcContrib contains a feature called Portable Areas which I’ve recently blogged about. In short, portable areas provide a way to distribute MVC binary components as simple .NET assemblies where the aspx/ascx files are actually compiled into the assembly as embedded resources. This is an extremely cool feature but once you start building robust portable areas, you’ll also want to be able to access other external files like css and javascript.  After my recent post suggesting portable areas be expanded to include other embedded resources, Eric Hexter asked me if I’d like to contribute the code to MvcContrib (which of course I did!). Embedded resources are stored in a case-sensitive way in .NET assemblies and the existing embedded view engine inside MvcContrib already took this into account. Obviously, we’d want the same case sensitivity handling to be taken into account for any embedded resource so my job consisted of 1) adding the Embedded Resource Controller, and 2) a little refactor to extract the logic that deals with embedded resources so that the embedded view engine and the embedded resource controller could both leverage it and, therefore, keep the code DRY. The embedded resource controller targets these scenarios: External image files that are referenced in an <img> tag External files referenced like css or JavaScript files Image files referenced inside css files Embedded Resources Walkthrough This post will describe a walkthrough of using the embedded resource controller in your portable areas to include the scenarios outlined above. I will build a trivial “Quick Links” widget to illustrate the concepts. The portable area registration is the starting point for all portable areas. The MvcContrib.PortableAreas.EmbeddedResourceController is optional functionality – you must opt-in if you want to use it.  To do this, you simply “register” it by providing a route in your area registration that uses it like this: 1: context.MapRoute("ResourceRoute", "quicklinks/resource/{resourceName}", 2: new { controller = "EmbeddedResource", action = "Index" }, 3: new string[] { "MvcContrib.PortableAreas" }); First, notice that I can specify any route I want (e.g., “quicklinks/resources/…”).  Second, notice that I need to include the “MvcContrib.PortableAreas” namespace as the fourth parameter so that the framework is able to find the EmbeddedResourceController at runtime. The handling of embedded views and embedded resources have now been merged.  Therefore, the call to: 1: RegisterTheViewsInTheEmmeddedViewEngine(GetType()); has now been removed (breaking change).  It has been replaced with: 1: RegisterAreaEmbeddedResources(); Other than that, the portable area registration remains unchanged. The solution structure for the static files in my portable area looks like this: I’ve got a css file in a folder called “Content” as well as a couple of image files in a folder called “images”. To reference these in my aspx/ascx code, all of have to do is this: 1: <link href="<%= Url.Resource("Content.QuickLinks.css") %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="<%= Url.Resource("images.globe.png") %>" /> This results in the following HTML mark up: 1: <link href="/quicklinks/resource/Content.QuickLinks.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="/quicklinks/resource/images.globe.png" /> The Url.Resource() method is now included in MvcContrib as well. Make sure you import the “MvcContrib” namespace in your views. Next, I have to following html to render the quick links: 1: <ul class="links"> 2: <li><a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a></li> 3: <li><a href="http://www.bing.com">Bing</a></li> 4: <li><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">Yahoo</a></li> 5: </ul> Notice the <ul> tag has a class called “links”. This is defined inside my QuickLinks.css file and looks like this: 1: ul.links li 2: { 3: background: url(/quicklinks/resource/images.navigation.png) left 4px no-repeat; 4: padding-left: 20px; 5: margin-bottom: 4px; 6: } On line 3 we’re able to refer to the url for the background property. As a final note, although we already have complete control over the location of the embedded resources inside the assembly, what if we also want control over the physical URL routes as well. This point was raised by John Nelson in this post. This has been taken into account as well. For example, suppose you want your physical url to look like this: 1: <img src="/quicklinks/images/globe.png" /> instead of the same corresponding URL shown above (i.e., “/quicklinks/resources/images.globe.png”). You can do this easily by specifying another route for it which includes a “resourcePath” parameter that is pre-pended.     I have seen a lot of discussions going on and people asking about DataGrid for WPF and complaining about Microsoft for not having one with their WPF framework till date. We know that WPF is a great UI technology and have the Concept of ItemsControl,DataTemplate, etc,etc to make great UX. Even WPF has got a more closely matching control- ListView, which can be easily templated to give better UX than a traditional Datagrid like display. And I would say a readymade DataGrid control will kill or hide a lot of creativity and it surely will decrease the innovations in User Experience field. So what is your opinion about the need of DataGrid in WPF as a Framework component? If you feel it is necessary then is it just because the world is so used to the DatGrid way of data display for many years?   • What's the thought behind Children and Controls properties in WPF?

    I don't know if this should go on Programmers, but I thought it was relevant here. Being a skilled WPF programmer myself, I often wonder what people were thinking when they designed WPF in terms of naming conventions. Why would you sometimes have a property called Children for accessing the children of the control, and then sometimes have an equivalent property, just called Controls instead? What were they thinking here? Another example is the Popup control. Instead of a Content property, it has a Child property. Why would you do that? To me that's just confusing. So I'm wondering if there's a logical reason for it, which would probably also help me understand what the properties are called next time I need to do some speed-programming. If there's no reason behind it, then all I can say is WAT.

  • Sharing a texture resource from DX11 to DX9 to WPF, need to wait for DeviceContext.Flush() to finish

    I'm following these instructions on TheCodeProject for rendering from DirectX to WPF using D3DImage. The trouble is that now that I have no swap chain to call Present() on -- which according to the article shouldn't be a problem, but it definitely wasn't copying my back buffer. An additional step that I have to take before I can copy the texture to WPF is to share it with a second D3D9Ex device, since D3DImage only works with DX9 (which is understandable, as WPF is built on DX9). To that end, I've modified some SlimDX code to work with DirectX 11. I tried calling DeviceContext.Flush() (the Immediate one) at the end of each render cycle, which kind of works -- most of the time it'll show my renderings, but maybe for maybe 3 or 4 out of 60 frames each second, it'll draw my clear color instead. This makes sense -- Flush() is non-blocking; it doesn't wait for the GPU to do its thing the way SwapChain.Present does. Any idea what the proper solution is? I have a feeling it has something to do with my texture parameters for the back buffer, but I don't know.

    I am tired of Windows Forms...I just am. I am not trying to start a debate on it I am just bored with it. Unfortunately we have become dependent on 4 controls in DevExpress XtraEditors. I have had nothing but difficulties with them and I want to move on. What I need now is what the closet replacement would be for the 4 controls I am using. Here they are: LookUpEdit - this is a dropdown that filters the dropdown list as you type. MemoExEdit - this is a textbox that 'pops up' a bigger area when it has focus CheckedComboBoxEdit - this is a dropdown of checkboxes. CheckedListBoxControl - this is a nicely columned list box of checkboxes This is a LOB app that has tons of data entry. In reality, the first two are nice but not essential. The second two are essential in that I would either need to replicate the functionality or change the way the users are interacting with that particular data. I am looking for help in replicating these in a WPF environment with existing controls(codeplex etc) or in straight XAML. Any code or direction would be greatly appreciated but mostly I am hoping to avoid any commercial 3rd party WPF and would instead like to focus on building them myself(but I need direction) or using Codeplex

  • What is the behavior of a WPF 4 ControlStoryboardAction trigger?

    Hi all! I have a question that's been bugging me for a while: I have a lengthy IO operation which I invoke asynchronously, and I want my UI to show a blinking text to tell the users that the data is loading. I have an IsLoading boolean property in my ViewModel, and I used a ControlStoryboardAction to kickoff the blinking animation, which is set to repeat forever. For my ControlStoryboardAction trigger, I configured a data trigger to see if IsLoading is true, and start my storyboard if true. My problem is, when my IO operation returns, and I set IsLoading back to false, the animation continues to play. I thought once the trigger condition evaluated to false, it would stop the animation? I then added a second ControlStoryboardAction to stop the animation if IsLoading evaluted to false, but this didn't have any effect. The animation continued to play after IsLoading was false. Can anyone explain to me how trigger works in ControlStoryboardAction? In normal data triggers in WPF, once the condition evaluated to false, the property would be set back to its original state. It seems triggers in WPF actions don't work the same way? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hello Good people! I'm building an WPF application that connect to web services for its operations.Things that i needed to be working are so far fine.Now i'll like to improve use experience by adding features like username editable combobox, sign me in when skype start and start when computer start. I have a fair idea about each feature but very small knowledge about their implementation. Question 1 username combobox : i use a combobox with isEditable set to true but i think it doesnt have the previous username, would that mean that i have to store every successful login username in a sqlite for example? Question 2 sign me in when skype start : i think about using sqlite after all to store the credentials and store the value (as in true or false) if autologin has to be performed. Question 3 start when computer start : i know it's about having is as service.but the process of using it as a service and removing its service when checkbox is checked or unckecked is a bit confusing to me. Question 4 Please wait(signing in) of skype if i want to do things like please wait at login(login is over webservice) in a WPF application should i use a animated gif in a grid that i can show when hiding the login combobox and passwordbox grid or i should use an animated object(for which i have no knowledge about for now) ? This post in mainly for you experts to either point me to the right resource and tell me what is done as best practice. things like dos and dons.Thanks for reading this and please let me have a clair idea about how to start implementing those features. thanks again

    For a button to handle event, we can add a delegate to the click property of the button: this.button1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button1_Click); But in WPF contrary to Winform, you can also attach a handler http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc785480.aspx So why not do so for the button ? Is performance better in first case maybe ? Update: I mean this Attached Events In order to enable elements to handle events that are declared in a different element, WPF supports something called attached events.   • Disk Response Time in Windows 7 Resource Monitor?

    In the resource monitor I'am looking at the disk response time. There are a lot of processes where the response time is thousands of milliseconds consistently, I'm pretty sure this is the source of my computer slowing down. I'm not sure what normal response times are though? I'm running win 7 64bit ultimate. This is running on a new computer, i5 with a terabyte drive, 4gigs of ram, etc, disk is still pretty much empty, so it should all be pretty snappy. And if it is going really slow, how do I track down whats causing it? I've turned off things like real time virus protection as experiments to see if there is something weird there, but makes no real difference (other than it doesn't contribute to the problem by accessing the disk)

In the Memory section, I see a section called Modified (orange) The official description is: Memory whose contents must be to disk before it can be used for another purpose. But I am still confused. What kinds of memory is Modified? In which case can we say that this number of memory is Modified? Can anyone give me a specific example? Is the following guess correct? When a program want to write something into disk, it actually write the content to an IO buffer, which is in the memory. After OS flush this area of memory into disk, the memory is modified or standby?

  • Qt vs WPF/.NET

    My company is trying to make the decision between using Qt/C++ for our GUI framework or migrating to .NET and using WPF. We have up to this point been using MFC. It seems that .NET/WPF is technically the most advanced and feature-rich platform. I do, however, have several concerns. These include: Platform support Framework longevity (i.e. future-proofing) Performance and overhead For this application we are willing to sacrifice support for Windows 2000, Macs, and Linux. But, the issue is more related to Microsoft's commitment to the framework and their extant platforms. It seems like Microsoft has a bad habit of coming up with something new, hyping it for a few years, and then relegating it to the waste-bin essentially abandoning the developers who chose it. First it was MFC and VB6, then Windows Forms, and now there's WPF. Also with .NET, versions of Windows were progressively nicked off the support list. Looks like WPF could be here to stay for a while, but since its not open source its really in Microsoft's hands. I'm also concerned about the overhead and performance of WPF since some of our applications involve processing large amounts of information and doing real-time data capture. Qt seems like a really good option, but it doesn't have all the features of WPF/.NET couldn't use languages like C#. Basically, what does the community think about Microsoft's commitment to WPF compared with previous frameworks? Are the performance considerations significant enough to avoid using it for a realtime app? And, how significant are the benefits of WPF/.NET in terms of productivity and features compared to Qt?
