• Is there a way to disable the hardware on/off switch for the Wireless interface?

  I have an HP 520 and is running the latest Ubuntu 11.10. The hardware works fine with Ubuntu with one exception: The device has a hardware switch for turning the wifi on and off. Every time the wi-fi is disabled through the hardware switch, I am unable to bring it on again. The message on the networking popup would be device not ready. What I am looking for is a way to disable the hardware switch altogether so that when users accidentally press the button, the wifi would not be disabled. There is no setting to disable the switch in the BIOS.   I'm trying to install a fully virtualized guest (Fedora 14 x86_64) on KVM (RHEL 6), using command-line only (both hypervisor and guest). It goes without errors, and without a tangible result . I'd like to know how to do a text-only installation. • Is the switch to Dvorak worth it?

  To those who were experienced ( 70 WPM, say) typists before the switch to Dvorak -- were you faster after switching? There are a couple good SO threads on Dvorak, but they are more on how to learn or reduction in typing pain than speed before/after. I know it will take me 1-2 months to feel comfortable, but I want to know if I should expect to be faster afterward. I am a programmer and type maybe 90-110 WPM on QWERTY. EDIT: I agree that coding is not typically IO-bound, and that a minimum typing speed is sufficient. This is half from curiosity, but it will be an undertaking to achieve QWERTY parity, so I want to know if I should at least expect some asymptotic improvement.

• a missing variable in a switch statement ?!!

  hi folks, i have a strange issue. a variable seems to be missing during a pass through a case statement i have a function like so function checklink($var0, $var1, $var2) { switch($var0) { case "case1": print $var2; //code uses $var2 successfully case "case2": print $var2; //variable has disappeared! } } essentially what i am doing is constructing a string from the last variable based on the first. if i run the code in which the first case is true, i get the expected results, but when i run the second case, my variable seems to have vanished. these first two case statements are syntactically the same and the variable is gathered from the $_GET array (hard coded into hyperlink). any light on this issue? if more explanation is needed let me know, its late and my brain is getting mushy. thanks my friends.

• DOS batch file to enter commands in proprietary java app and receive feedback?

  Hello, I'm working on a project in which I'd like to be able to turn lights on and off in the Duke Smart Home via a high frequency chirp. The lighting system is called Clipsal Square-D and the program that gives a user access to the lighting controls is called CGate. I was planning on doing some signal processing in Matlab, then create a batch file from Matlab to interact with Cgate. Cgate is a proprietary Java app that, if run from a DOS command line, opens up another window that looks like the command prompt. I have a batch file that can check to see if Cgate is running and if not, open it. But what I can't figure out how to do is actually run commands in the Cgate program from the batch file and likewise, take the response from Cgate. An example of such a command is "noop," which should return "200 OK." Any help would be much appreciated! • SQL 2005 Express Edition - Install new instance

  Looking for a way to programatically, or otherwise, add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express Edition to a system that already has an instance installed. Traditionally, you run Micrsoft's installer like I am in the command line below and it does the trick. Executing the command in my installer is not the issue, it's more a matter of dragging around the 40 MBs of MS-SQL installer that I don't need if they have SQL Express already installed. This is what my installer currently executes: SQLEXPR32.EXE /qb ADDLOCAL=ALL INSTANCENAME=<instancename> SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=<password> SQLAUTOSTART=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 I don't need assistance with launching this command, rather the appropriate way to add a new instance of SQL 2005 Express without actually running the full installer again. I'd go into great detail about why I want to do this but I'd simply bore everyone. Suffice to say, having this ability to create a new instance without the time it takes to reinstall SQL Express etc. would greatly assist me for the deployment of my application and it's installer. If makes any difference to anyone, I'm using a combination of NSIS and Advanced Installer for this installation project.

The content of each tabs is determined by XMLs on the Internet, and it could be WebView for HTML rendering, GridView for photo displaying, etc. I'm going to delay downloading of those XML until the tab is clicked. Upon clicking the application will download corresponding XML from the Internet, and then choose suitable View for it.   I am going insane! This is a simple app with two Views. FirstView is a text field with info button to flip to SecondView. In SecondView I have 6 buttons for background color choice. When button is pushed the color of background changes perfectly but cannot make it also change background color for FirstView. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks! The SecondView acts almost like a settings page in the fact that when a button is pushed the background color changes to the button color. I also came accross another solution from unix.com's forums: ps xf | sed '1d' | while read pid tty stat time command ; do [ -n "$(echo $command | egrep '^uwsgi')" ] && echo $pid ; done But still a lot of pipes and ugly tricks. Is there really no ps option or cleaner tricks (maybe using awk) to accomplish that?

  Hi, The UNIX department of my company currently uses CVS as source-version control system. They use it in a very strange way: different repositories for development/testing/production code (for the same project), no one tags anything, weird directory architecture, and so on. The system has been set for ages but now, I have an opportunity to organize a meeting where I have to suggest changes. I'd like to make them change from CVS to SVN (Mercurial or Git might be even better, however I can't really recommand using a system I don't know well, and switching to SVN will already be a great step forward). I don't have much experience with CVS so I can't compare them efficiently: I just know it doesn't support atomic operations and that it is deprecated. • Issue with android tablayout switch tab

  I am a new android developer, just tried something with Android Tablayout. There are two tabs and one tab has a GridView and the other one has a DatePicker. I created an activity and layout for each tab. The problem is that when I switch to the gridView, the background is not refreshed, and the images are just drawn over the DatePicker, so through images, the DatePicker still can be seen.
