• Uncontrolled Fan and Crash

  I don't have sensors to properly run lm-sensors. The computer will turn on but shortly there after all the fans in it will speed way up. It stays like this for a few minutes and then the computer shuts off. Tried resetting the BIO. Went to try installing a BIOs update but it wont stay on long enough for me to try that or to do a clean install. Could this be the motherboard dying? It's mainly the CPU fan that ends up going max. after a few minutes. I checked the PSU and It's a Dell Inspiron 580. If you need more system specs just le me know.

  Buenos Dias, Tengo un Notebook Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 1.60GHz Version de la BIOS Intel V1585, tenia un sistema operativo de windows xp e intente instalar ubunto 12.04 por medio de live USB debido a que no tengo la adaptación de CD segui todos los pasos y le di instalar completamente formateando el sistema anterior, terminando la instalacion me salio un problema que no encontraba el sistema de arranque o algo asi el hecho es que me salia algo de SDA donde aparecia el modelo del HDD y como es Hitachi HTS543212L9A300 le di en esa y le di finalizar, pero al reiniciar cuando debe iniciar el sistema operativo se queda en negro y no carga nada =S he intentado volver a arrancar la usb pero no me deja hacer nada se me traba =S. soy principiante en este sistema operativo y quiera saber que solución me pueden decir para sacarme de este embrollo. tampoco me sale nada despues de usar ctrl+alt+F1 =S...   I am looking to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. I have been using windows for work and school for over a year, and have about 100 gig of stored files (backed up of course) and some paid programs. Because of this, I really want my partitioning experience to go well.   I used Intrepid(8.10) and my graphics used to work fine with compiz effects and all(on better resolution than 1024x768).Now I have upgraded to Precise(12.04)but I use gnome classic(with compiz effects)as my desktop but the compiz effects seem not to work, only unity 2D works. • Lens showing only music after zeitgeist removal

  I can't get anything to show up in the Dash (lens?) other than music (no applications , no files) . This began when I removed zeitgeist. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, but still not working. I've also installed unity-place-files and unity-place-applications as suggested elsewhere. Under processes that are running I don't see zeitgeist.. (the original reason I wiped it out was because it was sucking up CPU). Ubuntu 12.04 Thanks in advance.

  I've noticed that there a seemingly blank processes (no process name, no cmdline info, only an ID), which also appear to cause my CPU to be running like crazy. My fans are going pretty much full speed and I have no idea what to do. Restarting does not help. Whenever I try to kill the process IDs, nothing happens. It's like new blank processes are continuously being created. I am really surprised that I am able to write up this question without Firefox lagging like crazy (and trust me, it's not Firefox causing the issue, as far as I can tell).

• is there a bug with restart in edubuntu 12.04

  After a clean install of edubuntu 12.04 on an Acer AO531-h netbook, restart doesn't work. The process starts normally but just before it shuts down the netbook freezes and I have to force shut down. The command "sudo reboot" has the same problem. I have no issues with shut down, only with restart. I'm absolute beginner. Netbook specs: Acer, intel atom CPU N270 @1.60GHz, 1.05 GHz 0.98GB RAM Dual booting with windows xp. No problems with windows.

  sorry im absolutly linux beginner.... i bought a packhard bell netbook dots with Limpus.did not get along with limpus so wanted to install ubuntu. netbook: 2 GB RAM intel Atom N2600, intel graphics Media Accelerator 3600 I over installled ubuntu 12.10 (desktop version) like in the instruction (isofile over USB). Installation went fine. No problems. when starting after installation alot of text is coming.....starting xyz....with alot of okays at the end of line but nothing happends: ends with #Starting CPU interrups balancing daemon, stopping anachronics cron and blinking cursor... was reading in this forum, tried to do some things like #recoverymode# and nomodeset... but did not work or where do i get this graphic drivers from. Packard bell just offers windows drivers.and how do i install them? maybe its a completely diffrent cause for this? Thanks alot

  I'm trying to reduce my fan speed with fancontrol and pwmanager because, despite the temperatures being the same, they are much louder on Linux (Ubuntu Gnome 14.04) than on Windows. I've followed the instructions in the first answer here but when running pwmanager I get pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed" I know that my system has working thermal sensors because PSensor has no trouble telling me my CPU temp and GPU temp. I would appreciate any help you can give in helping me reduce my fan speed to that of Windows (which uses the ASUS AI Suite 3 software which came with the Z87-A motherboard, if that's relevant).

  I recently installed 12.10 on my Desktop PC, moving away from Windows 7. For some reason, the fan in my computer is making an enormous amount of noise (it is running at full speed constantly). Under Windows 7, the fan would slow itself down and run at an acceptable noise level. Now, it is nearly unbearable. Checked the processes, and none are taking up a huge load on the CPU.   I am using VB.net to write a parallel based code. I use Parallel.For to generate pairs of 500 objects or in combination C(500,2) such as the following code; but I found that it didn't always generate all combinations which should be 124750 (shown from variable Counter). • Loud fans despite cool system under Linux (but not Windows)

  My new desktop computer runs almost silently under Windows, but the fans seem to run on a constantly high setting under Linux. Psensor shows that the GPU (with NVidia drivers) is thirty-something degrees and the CPU is about the same, so it's not just down to Linux somehow being more processor-intensive. I've read that the BIOS controls the fans under Linux, which makes sense given the high fan speeds when in BIOS as well. It's under Windows, when the ASUS AI Suite 3 software seems to take control, that the system runs more quietly and only speeds the fans up when required. So is there a Linux app which offers a similar dynamic control of the fans, or a setting hidden somewhere in the ASUS BIOS which allows the same but regardless of the OS? EDIT - I've tried using lm-sensors and fancontrol, but pwmconfig tells me "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed". This is after the sensors-detect command does find an 'Intel digital thermal sensor', and despite the sensors working fine in apps like psensor. Help getting this to work would likely solve the problem.

• Moving large amounts of data between shared hosts

  I recently acquired a client who is a photographer and was interested in moving web hosts since his current host had threatened to throw him off due to CPU spiking. The migration went fairly easily, with about 350MBs of website and media files. Then I discovered about 60GBs of client galleries he had failed to mention. I am unable to move this much data myself, since I'm capping out at about 20kb/s on the FTP connection. Has anyone encountered a situation where they needed to migrate this much data between cheap hosting? Should we contact the hosting companies about this (he is moving from Westhost to MediaTemple)?

• Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

  Trying to install Ubuntu Server 11.04 on an 64-bit AMD machine. The install goes fine until after "Loading additional components", then I get a blank purple screen with a responsive cursor at the bottom. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything (all the documentation seems to be on the desktop version). I have a wireless card installed if that makes a difference, don't why it would. This happens regardless of whether nomodeset is set. • Ubuntu 12.10 live-usb won't boot

  I own an Aleutia "Tango" low power PC. It uses a Intel Atom CPU N2800 @1.86GHz processor. I know there are Linux issues with the "Cedar Trail" graphics on this hardware but I can happily run Ubuntu 12.04 using the VESA graphics driver. I wanted to try out Ubuntu 12.10 so I created a live USB under 12.04 but I am unable to get this to boot. It gets as far as the Grub screen but after that the monitor shuts down. I have tried the F6 "nomodeset" option but that doesn't make any difference. Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem? Thanks in advance.

Examples are video processing, image processing, and all kinds of signal processing, in general. The goals are to document, and to teach the optimization techniques, so that the code does not become unmaintainable and prone to removal by newer developers. Considering that software offerings (commercial or open-source) retain their competitive advantage by having the fastest code and making use of the newest CPU architecture, software writers often need to tweak their code to make it run faster while getting the same output for a certain task, whlist tolerating a small amount of rounding errors. Typically, a software writer can keep many versions of a function as a documentation of each optimization / algorithm rewrite that takes place. How does one make these versions available for others to study their optimization techniques?
