• Start tomcat webapp with root privileges

  I built a webapp that uses libpcap (via jpcap). In order to be able to get the network interfaces list or to bind to a network interface, the application (in this case a webaap that runs from tomcat server) must be running with root privileges. During development I simply ran Eclipse with root privileges (sudo eclipse) and my webapp worked just fine with Eclipse's local tomcat server. However, when I try to deploy my webapp to the "real" tomcat server, it isn't working. I Also tried to start the tomcat6 service with sudo and changed the TOMCAT6_USER definition (defined in /etc/init.d/tomcat6) from "tomcat6" to "root" but it made no difference. What should I do to make it work?

• Renting an "EC2" server VS buying one (for a start up in initial stages)

  We are a small start up in the early stages and are working on a SaaS-based Rails product. Currently, we use EC2 for a small instance and have a need for another large/extra-large instance as we are beginning to deploy to the Cloud and get ready to release our "alpha" version. While EC2 was my choice for numerous reasons (reliability, accessibility - small team is geographically dispersed, maintainability, and things of that nature), it appears to be rather expensive. While the product will ultimately be deployed in the Cloud (be it EC2 or otherwise) and that experience would help the development team, would it make sense to purchase a physical server and stick it in the basement or bite the bullet and pay the price for EC2 (or other Cloud Providers)? While such decisions are driven by numerous factors, it would certainly help to get the thoughts of other folks who may have been in similar situations. Hence, the post. Thanks much!

  For coverage, I've a set of run time variables of from my program execution. It happens that I get it from a series of executions(Automated testing). ie. its a vector<vector<var,value>> I've a limited set of variables with expected values and generate combination s, that is I have vector<vector<var,value>(smaller than the execution vector)>. Now I need to compare and tell which of the combination I generated were exactly executed in one of the tests. My algo is O(n^4). Is there any way to bring it down. Something like set intersection. I'm using java, and vectors because of thread safety.

• Build a JavaScript wrapper for a rails-generated XML API?

  I am working with a large website written in Ruby on Rails. Thanks to the support for REST in Rails 2, the site's business logic is all accessible via a consistent XML API. Now I want to be able to easily write one or more JavaScript frontends to the site that interact with the generated Rails XML API. Ideally, an automated wrapper for the API could be created in JavaScript, since this would minimize the effort required in writing XML processing code for the more than 500 API functions. How, then, can I automatically generate a wrapper around a given XML API in JavaScript so that it's more pleasant to work with? I've worked with solutions of this nature for Java that generate classes and methods to wrap an API, so my current thinking is that I want something of that nature for JavaScript. I'd be open to an alternative take on the problem, though.

• Battery backed write cache behavior upon disk change

  We use 3ware Inc 9650SE SATA-II RAID PCIe RAID controllers with battery backed write cache. Our spare hardware has the same controller. I was wondering; are these controllers smart enough not to sync the cache when the disks have been changed? For example, if I deploy one of those spare machines by putting in the disks of another machine and that spare machine still has pending writes, will it be smart enough not to perform those writes on the replaced array? Edit: my scenario is not really made clear, so let me give an example: server1 goes down because of power supply failure. I put the disks in server2 and start. I repair server1 I put the disks back from server2 in server1 (it's not relevant right now that in reality I would probably keep server2 running). If server1 doesn't have safeguards, it will write to the array, thinking it's simply powering up again, corrupting it.

• Bare minimal Chef provisioning and deployment?

  I've read the documentation on Chef twice over. I still can't wrap my head around it's concept because they skip but fundamentals and jump to complex deployments with chef-server. Using chef-solo and possibly knife, is there a simple way to provision a server and deploy? I may be wrong, but it seems like with my cookbooks prepped, this should be very simple. knife rackspace server create --flavor 1 --image 112 That provisions my server. I can optionally pass --run-list "recipe[mything]", but how do my cookbooks in ~/my_cookbooks actually get on the server? Do I have to manually transfer them? That seems counterproductive.

• Dynamically loading chef recipies from URLs

  I'm deploying a web app on AWS. I intend to use chef to build AMIs which I'll then put into production. I want to have Chef monitor a URL stored in simpleDB. The URL would point to a tarball in S3. There would be different URLs, one for a config tarball, one for a code tarball. When I update the URL in simpleDB, I want chef to spot this and pull in and apply the configs/deploy the code. Is this possible? Has anything like this been done before or would I need to roll my own code? I think Chef can monitor URLs, but how would be the best way of getting it to load that URL from simpleDB?

• Linux file permissions not being preserved

  I am deploying some custom software as root (a necessity for this situation). I set the owner/group to user1:user1 and set all the files to 644 beforehand in shell, then copy and deploy with ant. However, when files get copied over from the deployment directory, the ownership changes back to root and all the files install with 666 permissions. This seems to occur whether the file is overwritten or newly created. I believe there is a way to set an option in cp, mv commands to preserve permissions, but that would be a lot of commands to change. How can I fix this? Is there some setting I can change temporarily for root so the install always preserves the file permissions?

• Strange/simple batch question regarding Java/Ant

  For my company, I'm making a batch script to go through and compile the latest revisions of code for our current project. I'm using Ant to build the class files, but encountered a strange error. One of the source files imports .* from a directory, where there are no files (only folders), and in fact, the folders needed are imported right after. It compiles perfectly fine in Eclipse, but I'm using an Ant script to automate it outside of the IDE, and Javac throws an error when it encounters this line. Is there any automated procedure I can use to ignore/suppress this error with javac in Ant? I'd even go so far as to create a dummy file in the importing directory, but all of that in contained in a Jar file I don't wish to have to decompress and then recompress with the dummy file. • Is there a free ftp client that has macros

  At the moment I'm using filezilla to deploy new versions of a site to the live server. the trouble is that there are one or two config, bootstrap etc. files which are different for the live site and I have to be careful not to overwrite. Also there are big areas of code that never change (eg I use the zend framework, which is always the same). I'd like to be able to record a macro to upload the same bunch of files and folders every time, excluding subdirectories and files which shouldn't be overwritten. Does any ftp client offer this?

• How many VPS' can I create on my server?

  I need to create as many VPS's on my dedicated server (KVM or OpenVZ) in order to sell them but I really don't know the answer. RAM calculation is simple, it's more about CPU resources, how many VPS's can hold. I'am talking about Intel i7-2600 (4 cores, 8 Threads). I need to deploy as many VPS's. It's all about the nr threads? i.e. 8 threads = maximum 8 x 1vCPU or maximum 4 x 2vCPU? I'am planning to use 1Gb and 2Gb memory on each VPS, the server has 16Gb (but I can raise RAM if need it. So, can I create 8 KVM VPS's with 4 vCPU and 2Gb ram each ? How about 20 VPS's with 1Gb ram and 4vCPU each? How is this decision affected by the hypervisor (KVM, OpenVZ, VMware)?

• Can I export a SharePoint list to an Excel file subdivided into separate worksheets?

  We have a SharePoint 2007 deployment which will have a substantially large document library. My client wants the ability to export this library to an Excel spreadsheet, but specifically wants the ability to divide the spreadsheet into several worksheets based on a specific field. Is this possible to accomplish in WSS 3.0, through the object model or otherwise? There is a out-of-the-box Export to Spreadsheet, but it does not appear to support automated subdivision of the list items into separate worksheets. I do not know if Excel Services that come with MOSS are capable of it, but we do not have MOSS so we cannot consider it an option for now.

  I have a PowerShell script that deploys about 12 web parts. They have all been created through Visual Studio 2010 and are being deployed to SharePoint 2010. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL. Here is the command that is breaking (this is the same command used to successfully deploy all 11 other web parts): Install-SPSolution –Identity PortalSelector.wsp -AllWebApplications -GACDeployment

  Using osql command, SSQL backup of a database is created. It is saved to Disk. Then renamed to match the date of the day backup was taken. All these files are saved in a single folder all the time. for example: Batch1.bat does the following 1) Created backup.bak 2) renamed to backup 12-13-2009.bak (this is done by the combination of % ~ - etc to get the date parameter) This is now automated to take backup everyday by Task scheduler in Windows. Can the batch file also be modified to delete backup files older than 7 days? if so, how ?   Hi all, When I install Windows, I like to deploy a set of the same apps (for example, Firefox, Chrome, Trillian, 7-Zip, etc.). I'd prefer to have a way of doing it all in one sitting, and I seem to remember there being a way of bundling all the installers. I was able to find two, though neither of them (Almeza MultiSet, WPIW) look like what I was thinking of. Can anyone recommend other ways of running a whole set of installers at once? Thanks! • Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution.   I use Avaya Reporting Services and OpenLink ODBC Drivers for db connection. I know that it uses port 5000 for handshaking but after that I believe it uses an random port for communication. I want to deploy my application and it will communicate with the client's system in their datacenter. They are asking what ports should they open on their firewalls. I can't obviously give them a range above 50,000 that I know OpenLink ODBC Drivers use. Can someone tell me what port should I tell my client to open?

• HTTP 401 error in Windows Authentication disappears after swapping Providers

  The IIS 7 on Windows 2008 R2 is acting really weird. We deploy our web apps as web sites with appcmd.exe. After they are deployed, if I browse to them, I'll get HTTP 401 errors. The web sites are only have Windows Authentication enabled and the providers are Negotiate and NTLM in such order. But if I swap the providers, the HTTP 401 error goes away. Even if I swap it back, the errors are still gone. So the order of the providers doesn't seem to matter, what matters is the swapping. It must have triggered something. Even if we delete the web site and application pool and reinstall the web sites, the errors are still gone. So far, we can't reproduce it easily since it happens randomly. Has anyone experienced this? How do I go about to troubleshoot it?

• Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

  I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

• IT Inventory Tracking

  What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")
