    I want to create a browser game, in which the user can control the development of a certain region (like SimCity or Civilization). One part of the task is rendering of the virtual world in a browser (3D or pseudo-3D). The rendering engine should a) work in a browser and b) ideally - be compatible with mobile devices (i. e. the representation of the virtual world should be visible both on desktop computer and mobile devices with the same codebase). Question: Which rendering engines (for SimCity-style games) fulfill aforementioned requirements (open and closed source) ?

  • Transiltion from maintenance programing to design

    What to do guys do develop a design for a s/w for a given set of requirements? I like many people joined a Semiconductor MNC and got stuck in maintenance for quite a couple of years. My work was usually changing a lines of code for windows drivers supplied by my company or a couple of small script (style like) C programs for validating h/w. As a result I developed the bad habit of 'programming by coincidence'. I have not developed the ability for designing tools/programs from scratch. I was the only s/w member of the local team and thus some grunt work from the well established other site of the company came to be done by me. Now I have moved to a different company and thus finding developing from scratch very difficult. How do I unlearn my bad habit and develop this ability of designing s/w and then coding it ?

  • SEP Search Engine Placement

    My employer was recently contacted by a company who convinced my employer that they could do what they called search engine placement and that they can guaranty that we will be placed on he top of googles search results. I immediately told my employer that it sounded like a scam, but I was made to contact the company regardless and investigate. The sales person insisted that SEP was different than the SEO and ad words campaigns we are already performing and that it was a cheaper way to be listed in the adwords section and that it didn't include a cost per click. It sounds to me like its kinda scammy like they are going to setup an adwords campaign and just charge us a flat rate that is higher than the cost per clicks. Has anyone heard of this and is it at all legitimate?

    I have to import data from excel to SQL database. Excel data contains various parameters and there value like P1,P1,P4,P5 etc. I have to apply business rules Like if( P1 100 and P1 < 200) then insert the record in database. Similarly in some cases string values are also validated. Can I have any open source rule engine that contains UI to change , add , delete the rules. Am using C# to read the excel and and insert the records One more thing which is best approach: Read excel first and store every record as an object in a collection, then iterate through the collection, apply business rules on every object and then insert record in the database Or Read one record from excel apply business rule and then insert record in the database. Repeat the process for whole excel.

    I have an internal (intranet) site that is comprised of several blogs and forums, hundreds of static pages, lots of PDF files and several other document types. Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.

  • Use of Service Bus in a Pub-Sub Engine

    In one of our projects, we've built a Publisher - Subscriber Engine on Oracle Service Bus. The functionality being a series of events are published and subscribers (JMS queues) receive these whenever a new event is published. We are facing some technical issues now, performance-wise and hence an architectural review is underway. Now for my questions: Architecturally the ESB has to publish events into a DB and read from the DB which users wish to be notified, then push the event onto their respective queues. There is a high amount of DB interaction and the question is whether ESB should be having such high amount of interaction with the DB in the first place? Or should there have been some alternate component responsible for doing this. Alternately is there any non-DB approach in which we can store the events and subscribers? Where else can this application data be held within the ESB context?

    In Responsive Design, we hide elements in the page with @media queries and display: hide in the CSS. Ok, But in my system: Browsers that have less than width: 800px, the layout must hide some content, not only hide, but avoid them load fully. I mean, in access with desktop with more than 800px of screen, the page load fully; In mobile devices, or even in desktop with less than 800px, not load some content.     This sounds like an easy thing but when i considering the following Many players Some have played many games and some just started Different type of statistics ...on what information should the actual ranking be based on. I am planning to display the board in a UITableView so there is limited space available per player. However, I am not bound to the UITableView if there is a better solution. This is a quiz game and the information i am currently capturing per player is: #games played totally #games played per game type (current version have only one game type) #questions answered #correct answers Maybe i should include additional information. I have been thinking about having a leaderboard property page where the player can decide on what basis the leaderboard should display information but would like to avoid the complexity in that. However, if that is needed i will do it. Anyone that can give me some advice on how to design the presentation of this would be highly appreciated?

  • Is it possible to run locally JRuby on Google App Engine without restarting server on every change?

    Unfortunately, GAE requires restart of the server on each code change. Is it possible to prevent it and have immediate feedback after code save? Or, can I import Google App Engine's API into my ruby code and run it on Sinatra server? Tried this but it fails on "import com.google.appengine.api" (it doesn't know what 'com' is). For Sinatra, I use "Rerun" ( http://github.com/alexch/rerun ) which restarts server immediately after a change with minimum wait. Thanks.

    Possible Duplicate: What is the best stucture of SEO friendly URL? I am working on a job board, and i'm trying to figure out a good design for URL structure. Some things that I have found through research: 100 - 150 Chars long is ideal 3-5 words in your url, according to Matt Cutts Use .htaccess to force clean urls Do not duplicate data (important) Clean and precise, describing the content Use hyphens On the homepage, I try to detect the users location based on IP, but this isn't always accurate, and not always reliable. So until they put in their city/location, I can't always use this structure but this is potentially work-able. For Searching, a form post to a results page: domain.com/jobs/[city]/[search] ie: domain.com/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ OR domain.com/search/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ or do I remove the word JOBS and just use Search. I trying to keep good search terms in the URL, but also keep it clean and concise. Can someone give me some feedback and thoughts to 'why'...

    Hi all, After hours of reading about and experimenting with DNS records I can access my Google app engine app via these URLs: myappid.appspot.com www.myappid.myowndomain.com What does not work: myowndomain.com www.myowndomain.com I want to be able to serve my app directly off my domain and not a subdomain.     i'm currently working on a project in my spare time (mostly 3-4 hours from monday to friday, and up to 6 hours on sundays) and i've found redmine very useful to hold a record of development tasks. However, there are some stuff, specially when you are trying to prototype or brainstorm a redesign of a set of related classes, that the best tool that i've found for this still is a sheet of paper and a pen. I want to understand if maybe i'm just short of getting to work properly with existing tools. Do you find the use of a notebook or a journal an unavoidable part of software design? are there better alternatives? how do you organize pen-and-paper work and other software management tools like redmine?

  • How to design a separated tutorial mode?

    I'm working on a "social" game that's about 90% completion. One of the remaining features is the tutorial mode. Basically, the tutorial mode will restrict the user to access some parts of UI and limit the features (like store items). The tutorial will only progress if a certain event is triggered, specifically following the tutorial. The code is ready and we already have an "almost" working game. The problem is I haven't foreseen the tutorial mode while I was doing those 90%. My requirement is there shouldn't be any loading/transition from tutorial mode to normal mode. This means I have to pick up the progress from the tutorial (no re-rendering of assets and stuff). How should I design this in a way where I won't touch anything from my old code? I want it to be as easy as just plugging it in. I don't want to jam the tutorial in my old code since this will lead to many bugs.
