• alsa - sound issues on ubuntu 12.04

  I have bought an Asus wireless LAN PC Card WL-100GE model, and I am using lubuntu on my system. While I have no cable connection, currently I cannot access the internet and update my laptop.   When I run iwconfig it say's lo and eth0 have no wireless extensions, but wlan0 it says IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS the:off Fragment the:off Power Management:off and I believe that's my problem, I just don't know how to turn it back on Any help?   Traditionally, my programs do their work in the background and when I do have to make an interface for some reason, they often do not need to be complex which means I can use a simple Windows Forms or console application. But lets be honest-- Windows Forms? That is so ... ancient! Instead I have been looking at Windows 8. A new interface, different, maybe better-- but fun to give a try. Which means XAML. Now, XAML isn't all that hard in concept. Panel here, button there-- A smattering of XML. My question in short: Where can I find resources that teach me how to write good XAML code for Windows 8 applications? The long version: How do I combine XAML constructs to achieve effects? Horizontal panels with multiple sections you can scroll through with your finger, the proper way? How should you use default style resources Windows 8 might give you by default? How do I properly create a panel with user info on the right? Left aligned stackpanels with embedded dockpanels? Yes? No? Why?

• Game Asset Management

  I am making my first small mobile game in C# XNA. Lets say I have 3 screens, the main menu, options and game screen. A single game session usually lasts for 1 min, so the user will alternate frequently between the main menu and game screen. Therefore, once I load the textures for either screen, I want to keep them in memory to avoid frequent reloading. Both screens share some assets like their background textures, but differ in others. The first solution I came up with is making 2 texture factory classes, MainScreenAssetFactory and GameScreenAssetFactory, each with their own content manager, and ill store them in a globally accessible point so that they persist after either screen is destroyed. There is also a OptionsScreenAssetFactory, but that I dont want to cache it since the options screen is rarely visited. A typical Factory would look something like this public class MainScreenAssetFactory { private readonly ContentManager contentManager; public MainScreenAssetFactory(IServiceProvider serviceProvider, string rootDirectory) { contentManager = new ContentManager(serviceProvider) { RootDirectory = rootDirectory }; } public Texture2D ListElementBackground { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("UserTab"); } } public Texture2D ListElementBulletPoint { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("TabIcon"); } } public Texture2D LoggedOutUser { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("LoggedOutUser"); } } } Since both Main, Options and Game Screen share some common resources, instead of loading them more than once, I created another class CommonAssetTexFactory which holds the common stuff and stays in-memory during the app lifetime. For example, this class gets passed to the options screen when it is created. However, given my small game with its few assets, I am already finding this solution cumbersome and inflexible. Changing anything would require looking to see if its already in the common factory, and if not, modifying existing factories and so on. And this is just considering textures currently, i didnt add sound files yet. I cant imagine bigger games with thousands of resources using this approach. A better idea must exist. Would someone please enlighten me?

• How do I use LibreOffice's 3d transitions in Impress?

  How can I get the 3D transitions working on Impress? I got a presentation coming soon, and as a requirement of the course the professor want us to use transitions on our "Power Point" chapter, obviously I have been using LibreOffice in every exercise but the native transitions are kind of lame, so when I install the newer version of Ubuntu, always install the extra package to the transitions - I had installed the 3D package: libreoffice-ogltrans 1:3.4.3-3ubuntu2 In previous versions of Ubuntu and worked perfectly, but for some reason is not working in this release. I got LibreOffice 3.4.3, Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) and my hardware is not relevant because I had it working before on previous releases. I know is not critical, but for my class is a pretty important deal, and can be a perfect opportunity to show the class that the cool stuff are not only in Windows.   My guess is this is on here somewhere but I have searched and even tried looking at bunch of other similar video problems. My ATI 9550 shows up as laptop in displays after update to Ubuntu 12.04, how do I fix this? I found the following command on another post sudo lshw -c video. This doesn't look to me like a laptop video would list? I also see this command xrandr, it reports this: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024 default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1280x1024 0.0* 1024x768 0.0 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 This is what shows in displays for resolutions but only the 1280x1024 works the others produce tearing in the video. Also I should have mentioned 3D mode does not work. I have tried ATI/AMD drivers the new one won't load and older ones won't work. I found out the newer driver no longer supports the 9550.

• Free movement in a tile-based isometric game

  Is there a reasonable easy way to implement free movement in a tile-based isometric game? Meaning that the player wouldn't just instantly jump from one tile to another or not be "snapped" to the grid (for example, if the movement between tiles were animated but you'd be locked from doing anything before the animation finishes). I'm a really beginner with anything related to game programming, but with the help of this site and some other resources it was quite easy to do the basic stuff, but I haven't been able to find any useful resources for this particular problem. Currently I've improvised something close to this: http://jsfiddle.net/KwW5b/4/ (WASD movement). The idea for the movement was to use the mouse map to detect when the player has moved to a different tile and then flip the offsets, and for the most part it works correctly (each corner makes the player move to wrong location: see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xr15IaOhrI, which is probably because I couldn't get the full mouse map work properly), but I have no illusions that it is even close to a good/sane solution. And anyway, it's mostly just to demonstrate what kind of a thing I'd like to implement.

• Is my graphics card in use or not?

  I have a Samsung Series 7 NP730U3E which is running Ubuntu Gnome 13.10. This computer have an Intel Core i5 3337U an AMD Radeon HD 8570M on the inside. Ubuntu 13.10 is said to have driver support for this graphics card, but I am not sure whether or not this is the case. When I check System Settings Details it says "Graphics: Intel® Ivybridge Mobile" and lspci | grep VGA returns VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09). But lshw -c video returns *-display description: Display controller product: Mars [Radeon HD 8730M] vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • After upgrade to 12.04 wireless keeps dropping on BCM4312

  I know there are plenty of questions very similar to these, but I've tried practically everything and it still isn't working. Some solutions get the wireless connection working, but it goes very slow and drops after a few minutes. Then it won't reconnect and keeps asking for password. Hope you can help me. • How should a non-IT manager secure the long-term maintenance and development of essential legacy software?

  I've been hunting for a place to ask this question for quite a while; maybe this is the place, although I'm afraid it's not the kind of "question with an answer" this site would prefer. We are a small, very specialized, benefits administration firm with an extremely useful, robust collection of software, some written in COBOL but most in BASIC. Two full-time consultants have ably maintained and improved this system over more than 30 years. Needless to say they will soon retire. (One of them has been desperate to retire for several years but is loyal to a fault and so hangs on despite her husband's insistence that golf should take priority.) We started down the path of converting to a system developed by one of only three firms in the country that offer the type of software we use. We now feel that although this this firm is theoretically capable of completing the conversion process, they don't have the resources to do so timely, and we have come to believe that they will be unable to offer the kind of service we need to run our business. (There's nothing like being able to set one's own priorities and having the authority to allocate one's resources as one sees fit.) Hardware is not a problem--we are able to emulate very effectively on modern servers. If COBOL and BASIC were modern languages, we'd be willing to take the risk that we could find replacements for our current consultants going forward. It seems like there ought to be a business model for an IT support firm that concentrates on legacy platforms like this and provides the programming and software development talent to support a system like ours, removing from our backs the risks of finding the right programming talent and the job of convincing younger programmers that they can have a productive, rewarding career, in part in an old, non-sexy language like BASIC. Where do I find such firms?

One thread for 'logic', one for rendering, or more? 6 answers So I recently started learning Java, and having a interest in playing games as well as developing them, naturally I want to create game in Java. I have experience with games in C# and C++ but all of them were single-threaded simple games. But now, I learned how easy it is to make threads in Java, I want to take things to the next level. I started thinking about how would I actually implement threading in a game. I read couple of articles that say the same thing "Usually you have thread for rendering, for updating game logic, for AI, ..." but I haven't (or didn't look hard enough) found example of implementation. My idea how to make implementation is something like this (example for AI) public class AIThread implements Runnable{ private List<AI> ai; private Player player; /*...*/ public void run() { for (int i = 0; i < ai.size(); i++){ ai.get(i).update(player); } Thread.sleep(/* sleep until the next game "tick" */); } } I think this could work. If I also had a rendering and updating thread list of AI in both those threads, since I need to draw the AI and I need to calculate the logic between player and AI(But that could be moved to AIThread, but as an example) . Coming from C++ I'm used to do thing elegantly and efficiently, and this seems like neither of those. So what would be the correct way to handle this? Should I just keep multiple copies of resources in each thread or should I have the resources on one spot, declared with synchronized keyword? I'm afraid that could cause deadlocks, but I'm not yet qualified enough to know when a code will produce deadlock.

• Silverlight 3 Dynamic DataGrid RowStyle Ignored

  I subclassed the standard DataGrid into SpecialDataGrid so I could override the KeyDown/KeyUp events. Other than that SpecialDataGrid is exactly the same as DataGrid. At run-time I dynamically create a bunch of these SpecialDataGrids. When a user clicks a row in the grid it hightlights, which is fine, but when that grid loses focus, it leaves a residual gray highlight on the last-selected row, which is not fine. I've heavily edited the RowStyle and CellStyle I'm applying to these Grids to more-or-less remove all formatting. I even added a static SpecialDataGrid to the app with test data so I could see if the RowStyle was somehow incorrect, applying the same RowStyle and CellStyle that I'm applying to the dynamically generated one (you'll see it in the code below). What I saw was that the "test grid" showed up exactly as I wanted, and the real grid is ignoring part of the RowStyle! Has anyone run into this issue or have any ideas of how to correct it? • Dojox grid having problem with Contentpane

  the grid appears properly on template's first loading. But when you click the paging button to load flooders.php thru list_result1() only the paging buttons will appear.
