  • What does flushing thread local memory to global memory mean?

    Hi, I am aware that the purpose of volatile variables in Java is that writes to such variables are immediately visible to other threads. I am also aware that one of the effects of a synchronized block is to flush thread-local memory to global memory. I have never fully understood the references to 'thread-local' memory in this context. I understand that data which only exists on the stack is thread-local, but when talking about objects on the heap my understanding becomes hazy. I was hoping that to get comments on the following points: When executing on a machine with multiple processors, does flushing thread-local memory simply refer to the flushing of the CPU cache into RAM? When executing on a uniprocessor machine, does this mean anything at all? If it is possible for the heap to have the same variable at two different memory locations (each accessed by a different thread), under what circumstances would this arise? What implications does this have to garbage collection? How aggressively do VMs do this kind of thing? Overall, I think am trying to understand whether thread-local means memory that is physically accessible by only one CPU or if there is logical thread-local heap partitioning done by the VM? Any links to presentations or documentation would be immensely helpful. I have spent time researching this, and although I have found lots of nice literature, I haven't been able to satisfy my curiosity regarding the different situations & definitions of thread-local memory.     Hi All, I had a problem when I am using Cilk++, an extension to C++ for parallel computing.     I have a folder with a bunch of log files. Each set of log files is in a folder detailing the time and date that the program was run. Inside these log folders, I've got some video files that I want to extract. All I want is the video files, nothing else. I tried using this command to only copy the video files, but it didn't work because a directory didn't exist. .rmv is the file extension of the files I want. $ find . -regex ".*.rmv" -type f -exec cp '{}' /copy/to/here/'{}' If I have a folder structure such as: |- root | |--- folder1 | |----- file.rmv | |--- folder2 | |----- file2.rmv How can I get it to copy to copy/to/here with it copying the structure of folder1 and folder2 in the destination directory?

    I have a remote tracking branch tracked locally in my local repository using 'git branch -b branch-name origin/branch-name'. My remote branch is test2/test2 (origin/branch-name) which is being tracked locally as test2. The origin is also named test2. I haven't checked-out my local tracking branch test2. When i do a 'git pull origin remote-branch:local-tracked-branch' i get this error [test2]$ git pull test2 test2:test2 From /gitvobs/git_bare/test2 ! [rejected] test2 - test2 (non fast forward) Whereas when i checkout my local tracking branch test2 and do pull 'git pull origin local-tracked-branch' i don't get the error and i do a pull using 'git pull test2 test2' From /gitvobs/git_bare/test2 * branch test2 - FETCH_HEAD Auto-merging a.txt Automatic merge failed; fix conflicts and then commit the result. i know that adding a + (git pull test2 +test2:test2) would help but it overwrites local changes. So how do i know which of my local branches are created by me locally using 'git branch new-branch-name' or tracked locally from remote branches using git branch -b branch-name origin/branch-name'?

    I copy some files, go to /var/www/html, right click, Paste isn't available. Why is that? I tried the command sudo nautilus, it opened the files navigation window, I navigated to /html, still the same problem. I also tried gksudo nautilus but it said: The program 'gksudo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install gksu I installed it, tried again, same problem.     I'm reading "Professional Team Foundation Server 2010" by Wrox, and in an advantages/disadvantages list, the said: "Like CVS, SVN makes use of .svn directories inside the source folders to store state of the local working copy, and to allow synchronization with the server. However, it can have the affect of polluting the local source tree, and can cause performance issues wiht very large projects or files." What does the bit about pollution mean?   • How do I change local display resolution via SSH?

    I have a machine running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and I'm having problems with the local monitor. The Dell flat panel I'm using only displays this message while the computer running: "Cannot Display This Video Mode" and then the information: "Optimum resolution 1280x1024 60Hz". I'm fairly new to using an operating system wholly via command line but I'm learning fast. :) I can access the server fine via SSH so using it is not a problem. However, for where it is positioned at the moment, it would be much more convenient to use the computer locally. I'm just wondering how to change the local screen resolution via SSH to something usable by my monitor. Thanks for your time! BTW: I have also tried switching displays and I still have the same problem. Also BTW: I tried putting in the xrandr command and all I get back is: Can't open display

If f2 is a directory I would like to copy f1 to this directory (the file name should stay the same). If f2 is a file I would like to copy the contents of f1 to the end of the file f2.     I've seen games which display different data for two devices, but not more than two. If possible, can it be accomplished using GameKit? EDIT: More specifically, I was thinking local multiplayer via bluetooth or wi-fi on an iOS device. Most games I've seen display the same screen synchronized across all of the devices. I understand games that network across the internet do this, often using a server, but I haven't seen any examples of a 3+ device local multiplayer iOS game. I just want to make sure it wasn't some kind of limitation.

    I have been looking at different tutorials about rsync about some specific situation I have. I have a home server with all my pics, this server is my backup, my PC is the one that receives the new pics and until now i had been manually copying and pasting new photos from the PC to the server. I was trying to setup rsync to do this automatically and in principle, it does without problem. Now the issue; when I fire up rsync it start copying all the files, even the ones were already in the destination (this is because it is the 1st sync). so my question is: Is it possible for rsync to verify that a file is the same (name/size/bin) so it will skip the copy on the 1st sync?

I need to be able to prepare the content for our public site and turn it over to the web designer who publishes it to our live site. I want our UI team to be able to quickly glance at the copy I write and immediately know where on the page I intend for it to go. Currently, I'm using microsoft word to write and color code different text to signify where I want specific text to go. It is difficult for the UI guy to immediately know if something goes into the nav bar or into a header or a description below a header.     We have an Azure service (web role) that heavily depends on the database. For offline development/testing, we'd like to have the app+db run offline within the emulators. Running the webrole itself within the emulator is straightforward but doing so for the Azure SQL storage isn't so. What is the simplest way to ensure that the cloud Azure SQL database and the emulator/local Azure SQL database are in sync? We can afford some level of staleness for simplicity of sync operation (meaning it's ok for the local copy to be a few hours stale versus mirroring every write as soon as it happens) Thanks

  • Slow local file transfer (copy) on ESX vmware server?

    I have a 8 CPU VmWare ESX server (3.5) with 4 HDD drives in RAID that is not loaded at all. I enabled SSH and installed mc (midnight commander) in order to be able to copy(clone) virtual machines but I observed that if does copy the files very slow - around 3.5mb/s on local drive. Why is this happening and how should I solve the issue?
