  • For what else I can use MySQL?

    - by ilhan
I know how to store data in MySQL. Shortly, I know the basics: design, storing strings, integers, date. Is there something else that could be done/achieve with MySQL? Like some kind of functions, temprory bla blas? I don't know. (I know PHP)

  • Creating SVG map from geometry stored in MySQL

    - by Barnabe
I have a group of geometries stored in MySQl (as polygon and as well-known text) representing counties. I can build a table of geometries and color codes after querying some county data (say GDP per capita). What is the best way to export this as an SVG map? I cannot find any reference to SVG conversion in the MySQL documentation.

  • MySQL Stored Procedures : Use a variable as the database name in a cursor declaration

    - by Justin
I need to use a variable to indicate what database to query in the declaration of a cursor. Here is a short snippet of the code : CREATE PROCEDURE `update_cdrs_lnp_data`(IN dbName VARCHAR(25), OUT returnCode SMALLINT) cdr_records:BEGIN DECLARE cdr_record_cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT cdrs_id, called, calling FROM dbName.cdrs WHERE lrn_checked = 'N'; # Setup logging DECLARE EXIT HANDLER FOR SQLEXCEPTION BEGIN #call log_debug('Got exception in update_cdrs_lnp_data'); SET returnCode = -1; END; As you can see, I'm TRYING to use the variable dbName to indicate in which database the query should occur within. However, MySQL will NOT allow that. I also tried things such as : CREATE PROCEDURE `update_cdrs_lnp_data`(IN dbName VARCHAR(25), OUT returnCode SMALLINT) cdr_records:BEGIN DECLARE cdr_record_cursor CURSOR FOR SET @query = CONCAT("SELECT cdrs_id, called, calling FROM " ,dbName, ".cdrs WHERE lrn_checked = 'N' "); PREPARE STMT FROM @query; EXECUTE STMT; # Setup logging DECLARE EXIT HANDLER FOR SQLEXCEPTION BEGIN #call log_debug('Got exception in update_cdrs_lnp_data'); SET returnCode = -1; END; Of course this doesn't work either as MySQL only allows a standard SQL statement in the cursor declaration. Can anyone think of a way to use the same stored procedure in multiple databases by passing in the name of the db that should be affected?

  • mysql row locking via php

    - by deezee
I am helping a friend with a web based form that is for their business. I am trying to get it ready to handle multiple users. I have set it up so that just before the record is displayed for editing I am locking the record with the following code. $query = "START TRANSACTION;"; mysql_query($query); $query = "SELECT field FROM table WHERE ID = \"$value\" FOR UPDATE;"; mysql_query($query); (okay that is greatly simplified but that is the essence of the mysql) It does not appear to be working. However, when I go directly to mysql from the command line, logging in with the same user and execute START TRANSACTION; SELECT field FROM table WHERE ID = "40" FOR UPDATE; I can effectively block the web form from accessing record "40" and get the timeout warning. I have tried using BEGIN instead of START TRANSACTION. I have tried doing SET AUTOCOMMIT=0 first and starting the transaction after locking but I cannot seem to lock the row from the PHP code. Since I can lock the row from the command line I do not think there is a problem with how the database is set up. I am really hoping that there is some simple something that I have missed in my reading. FYI, I am developing on XAMPP version 1.7.3 which has Apache 2.2.14, MySQL 5.1.41 and PHP 5.3.1. Thanks in advance. This is my first time posting but I have gleaned alot of knowledge from this site in the past.

  • Development Environment for Testing MySQL Replication

    - by Dave Morris
Is there an easy way to setup an environment on one machine (or a VM) with MySQL replication? I would like to put together a proof of concept of MySQL replication with one Master write instance and two slave instances for reads. I can see doing it across 2 or 3 VMs running on my computer, but that would really bog down my system. I'd rather have everything running on the same VM. What's the best way to proof out scalability solutions like this in a local dev environment? Thanks for your help, Dave

  • Browser Detection

    - by Jrgns
What's the best / simplest / most accurate way to detect the browser of a user? Ease of extendability and implementation is a plus. The less technologies used, the better. The solution can be server side, client side, or both. The results should eventually end up at the server, though. The solution can be framework agnostic. The solution will only be used for reporting purposes.

  • When should I use MySQL compressed protocol?

    - by ento
I've learned that MySQL can compress communication between servers and clients. Compression is used if both client and server support zlib compression, and the client requests compression. (from MySQL Forge Wiki) The most obvious pros and cons are pros: Reduced payload size cons: Increased computation time So, is compressed protocol something I should enable whenever I can afford servers with adequate specs? Are there other factors I should consider?

    Hi I have a problem, this is my code: $db = new mysqli("localhost", "root", "", "blah"); $result1 = $db-query("select * from c_register where email = '$eml' and password = '$pass'"); if($result1-fetch_array()) { $auth->createSession(); $_SESSION['user'] = 'client'; promptUser("You have successfully logged in!!!","index.php"); } $db = new mysqli("localhost", "root", "", "blah"); $result2 = $db-query("select * from b_register where email = '$eml' and password = '$pass'"); if($result2-fetch_array()) { $auth->createSession(); $_SESSION['user'] = 'business'; promptUser("You have successfully logged in!!!","index.php"); } $db = new mysqli("localhost", "root", "", "blah"); $result3 = $db-query("select * from g_register where email = '$eml' and password = '$pass'"); if($result3-fetch_array()) { $auth->createSession(); $_SESSION['user'] = 'employee'; promptUser("You have successfully logged in!!!","index.php"); } $db = new mysqli("localhost", "root", "", "blah"); $result4 = $db-query("select * from k_register where email = '$eml' and password = '$pass'"); if($result4-fetch_array()) { $auth->createSession(); $_SESSION['user'] = 'super'; promptUser("You have successfully logged in!!!","index.php"); } else { promptUser("Username/Password do not match. Please try again!!!",""); } Funny enough this code works, but I no that I went about it the wrong way. I am new with php and mysql, so please help. I also tried e.gresult4->free(); for all the variable that save the data, and I got this error: Fatal error: Call to a member function free() on a non-object in...

  • which is better, creating a materialized view or a new table?

    - by Carson
I have some demanding mysql queries that are needed to grap same up-to-date datasets from 5-7 mysql tables. I am thinking of creating a table or materialized view to gather all demanding columns from other tables, so as to increase performance. If I create that table, I may need to do extra insert / update / delete operation each time other tables updated. if I create materialized view, I am worrying if the performance can be greatly improved. Because data from other tables are changing very frequently. Most likely, the view may need to be created first everytime before selecting it. Any ideas? e.g. how to cache? other extra measures I can do?

  • MySQL 5.1 - logging CREATE/ALTER statements

    - by pako
Is it possible to log CREATE / ALTER statements issued on a MySQL server? I heard that it could be done with a trigger, but I can't seem to find suitable code anywhere. I would like to log these statements to a table, preferably with the timestamp of when they were issued. Can someone provide me with a sample trigger that would enable me to accomplish this? I would like to log these statements so I can easily synchronize the changes with another MySQL server.

  • PHP - error when insert date into MySQL

    - by Michael Mao
Hello everyone: I've got a typical problem when trying to insert a date into MySQL. The column defined in MySQL is of type DATE. My PHP version is 5.3.0 Apart from this date-related issue, the rest of my code works just fine. And this is my PHP script to do this: $tablename = BOOKS_TABLE; $insert = mysql_query("INSERT INTO $tablename (barcode, book_name, volume_num,". " author, publisher, item_type, buy_price, buy_date) VALUES ". "(". "'" . $barcode . "', ". "'" . $bookname . "', ". "'" . $volumenum . "', ". "'" . $author . "', ". "'" . $publisher . "', ". "'" . $itemtype . "', ". "'" . $buyprice . "', ". "'" . getMySQLDateString($buydate). //"'STR_TO_DATE('".$buydate ."', '%d/%m/%Y'))'". //nothing changes in MySQL ")"); And this is the faulty function : function getMySQLDateString($buydate) //typical buydate : 04/21/2009 { $mysqlDateString = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', $strtotime($buydate)); return $mysqlDateString; } The first commented out line wouldn't do anything, the script is executed with no error, however, there is nothing changed in datebase after this. The current approach will cause a Fatal error saying function name must be a string in this line. Actually I followed this thread on SO, but just cannot pass the date into MySQL... Can anyone help me figure out which part is not right? How would you do it, in this case, to get it right? Sorry about such a journeyman-like question, thanks a lot in advance.
