• Apache mod-rewrite for shorter urls

  Is it possible do do something like this with mod-rewrite? Current url: www.example.com/Departments/dynamicPage.php?DeptID=10&DeptName=HR to set up a rewrite so: www.example.com/hr could redirect to the above (with the arguments)? I know I could create an "hr" folder on the root level and put in an html page with a meta refresh, but I hate the extra clutter. I don't think a .htaccess 301 is possible, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for an elegant solution that can be added to for future instances.

• WCF DataContract class with methods

  This is more of a philosophical/best-practice sort of question rather than a technical problem. Are there any strong arguments against writing a DataContract class with methods that are to be used server-side only? Or what about additional properties that are not decorated with the DataMember attribute? For example: [DataContract] public class LogEntry { [DataMember] public string Message { get; set; } [DataMember] public string Severity { get; set; } public string SomeOtherProperty { get; set; } ... public void WriteToDatabase() { ... } } Not doing it seems like an awful lot of extra work that I would prefer to avoid, although using extension methods could make it easier. But, as a good developer, I am wondering if it is bad practice to do so.

  Hi, I'm trying to modify Guido's multimethod (dynamic dispatch code): http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=101605 to handle inheritance and possibly out of order arguments. e.g. (inheritance problem) class A(object): pass class B(A): pass @multimethod(A,A) def foo(arg1,arg2): print 'works' foo(A(),A()) #works foo(A(),B()) #fails Is there a better way than iteratively checking for the super() of each item until one is found? e.g. (argument ordering problem) I was thinking of this from a collision detection standpoint. e.g. foo(Car(),Truck()) and foo(Truck(), Car()) and should both trigger foo(Car,Truck) # Note: @multimethod(Truck,Car) will throw an exception if @multimethod(Car,Truck) was registered first? I'm looking specifically for an 'elegant' solution. I know that I could just brute force my way through all the possibilities, but I'm trying to avoid that.   suppose i have a dll with 2 functions.name of dll="dll1" f1(int a, int b, int c); f2(int a); my program would take the funtion name ,the dll name and a "list" of parameters as input. how would i call the appropriate function with its appropriate parameters. i.e, if input is dll1 f1 list(5,8,9) this would require me to call f1 with 3 parameters if input was dll1 f2 list(8) it would require me to call f2 with one parameter how would i call the function without knowing the number of parameters in advance. further clarification: how do I write code that will call any function with all its arguments by building the argument list dynamically using some other source of information

• VB.NET - using textfile as source for menus and textboxes

  Hi, this is probably a bit tense and I'm not sure if this is possible at all. But basically, I'm trying to create a small application which contains alot of PowerShell-code which I want to run in an easy matter. I've managed to create everything myself and it does work. But all of the PowerShell code is manually hardcoded and this gives me a huge disadvantage. What I was thinking was creating some sort of dynamic structure where I can read a couple of text files (possible a numerous amount of text files) and use these as the source for both the comboboxes and the richtextbox which provovides as the string used to run in PowerShell. I was thinking something like this: Combobox - "Choose cmdlet" - Use "menucode.txt" as source Richtextbox - Use "code.txt" as source But, the thing is, Powershell snippets need a few arguments in order for them to work. So I've got a couple of comboboxes and a few textboxes which provides as input for these arguments. And this is done manually as it is right now. So rewriting this small application should also search the textfile for some keywords and have the comboboxes and textboxes to replace those keywords. And I'm not sure how to do this. So, would this requre a whole lot of textfiles? Or could I use one textfile and separate each PowerShell cmdlet snippets with something? Like some sort of a header?   Hi, just a simple question here. I've used Moq for awhile but, as of yet, have only used it for stubbing and not for mocking. I am trying to introduce our developers to unit testing. I set up a simple example to explain the concepts but i can't seem to get it working. • How can I easily run different configurations in Eclipse?

  I have an Java applications which I would like to run with different values of input parameters (specified in the command line). In "Run - Run Configurations" I have created different configurations corresponding to different values of the input arguments. I can run these configurations in the same way (throw "Run - Run Configurations"). But in these case I have to perform to many actions (clicks) to run a particular configuration. Is there a easier (faster) way to do that? For example I expect that I can do it throw "Run - Run as" but in the drop-dawn menu of the "Run as" I see "(Not Applicable)".

  Most of my database tables have a clear unique index through which lookups are done 90% of the time but I am a bit unsure on this one - I have a table which keeps track of user rating totals for items in my database, I now want to add another table, to track individual ratings with an ip address column to make sure no one can rate something twice. Since I can see this becoming a big, high use table it is important to optimize it correctly. (MYSQL table) This table will have the following fields: rating_id(always - unique), item_id (always - not unique), user_id (optional - not unique), ip_address (always - not unique), rating_value(always - not unique), has_review(bool) Now I envisions 90% the queries going something like this: When a user rates something - select where item_id = x and ip_address = y, (if rows = 0) insert rating When in user account pages - select where ip_address = x or username = y Now none of the fields searched on are unique, can I still use them as indexes (for example item _id and ip_address), can I have two indexes and will this still improve performance over a non indexed table?

  For example: Cardinality and optionality are orthogonal properties of a relationship. You can specify that a relationship is optional, even if you have specified upper and/or lower bounds. This means that there do not have to be any objects at the destination, but if there are then the number of objects must lie within the bounds specified. What exactly does "orthogonal" mean? I bet it's just a fancy soundig nerd-style word for something that could be expressed a lot easier to understand for average people ;) From wikipedia: In mathematics, two vectors are orthogonal if they are perpendicular, i.e., they form a right angle. The word comes from the Greek ????? (orthos), meaning "straight", and ????a (gonia), meaning "angle". Anyone?

• Are indivisible operations still indivisible on multiprocessor and multicore systems?

  As per the title, plus what are the limitations and gotchas. For example, on x86 processors, alignment for most data types is optional - an optimisation rather than a requirement. That means that a pointer may be stored at an unaligned address, which in turn means that pointer might be split over a cache page boundary. Obviously this could be done if you work hard enough on any processor (picking out particular bytes etc), but not in a way where you'd still expect the write operation to be indivisible. I seriously doubt that a multicore processor can ensure that other cores can guarantee a consistent all-before or all-after view of a written pointer in this unaligned-write-crossing-a-page-boundary situation. Am I right? And are there any similar gotchas I haven't thought of?

  I have to write a Prolog program to computer the inverse of factorial function without using division. I was also given the note: "the inverse of a function is not necessarily a function". I have this is a normal factorial predicate.. fact(0,1). fact(N,F) :- N0, N1 is N-1, fact(N1,F1), F is N * F1. I've read on some other posts that you should be able to just switch around the arguments, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this version. Could anyone help me out with figuring out why?

Is there anyway I can say this token can be there 1 or less times but not more than one? so it would accept: "tokena tokenb" or "tokenb" BUT NOT "tokena tokena tokenb"? Many thanks
