  I have built a Java CORBA application that subscribes to an event server. The application narrows and logs on just fine, but as soon as an event is sent to the client, it breaks with the error below. • Difference between SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 for inserting multiple rows with XML

  I am using the following SQL code for inserting multiple rows of data in a table. The data is passed to the stored procedure using an XML variable : INSERT INTO MyTable SELECT SampleTime = T.Item.value('SampleTime[1]', 'datetime'), Volume1 = T.Item.value('Volume1[1]', 'float'), Volume2 = T.Item.value('Volume2[1]', 'float') FROM @xml.nodes('//Root/MyRecord') T(item) I have a whole bunch of unit tests to verify that I am inserting the right information, the right number of records, etc.. when I call the stored procedure. All fine and dandy - that is, until we began to monkey around with the compatibility level of the database. The code above worked beautifully as long as we kept the compatibility level of the DB at 90 (SQL 2005). When we set the compatibility level at 100 (SQL 2008), the unit tests failed, because the stored procedure using the code above times out. The unit tests are dropping the database, re-creating it from scripts, and running the tests on the brand new DB, so it's not - I think - a question of the 'old compatibility level' sticking around. Using the SQL Management studio, I made up a quick test SQL script. Using the same XML chunk, I alter the DB compat level , truncate the table, then use the code above to insert 650 rows. When the level is 90 (SQL 2005), it runs in milliseconds. When the level is 100 (SQL 2008) it sometimes takes over a minute, sometimes runs in milliseconds. I'd appreciate any insight anyone might have into that. EDIT The script takes over a minute to run with my actual data, which has more rows than I show here, is a real table, and has an index. With the following example code, the difference goes between milliseconds and around 5 seconds. --use [master] --ALTER DATABASE MyDB SET compatibility_level =100 use [MyDB] declare @xml xml set @xml = '<?xml version="1.0"?> <Root xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Record> <SampleTime>2009-01-24T00:00:00</SampleTime> <Volume1>0</Volume1> <Volume2>0</Volume2> </Record> ..... 653 records, sample time spaced out 4 hours ........ </Root>' DECLARE @myTable TABLE( ID int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [SampleTime] [datetime] NOT NULL, [Volume1] [float] NULL, [Volume2] [float] NULL) INSERT INTO @myTable select T.Item.value('SampleTime[1]', 'datetime') as SampleTime, Volume1 = T.Item.value('Volume1[1]', 'float'), Volume2 = T.Item.value('Volume2[1]', 'float') FROM @xml.nodes('//Root/Record') T(item) I uncomment the 2 lines at the top, select them and run just that (the ALTER DATABASE statement), then comment the 2 lines, deselect any text and run the whole thing. When I change from 90 to 100, it runs all the time in 5 seconds (I change the level once, but I run the series several times to see if I have consistent results). When I change from 100 to 90, it runs in milliseconds all the time. Just so you can play with it too. I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition.

• Why doesn't my QsciLexerCustom subclass work in PyQt4 using QsciScintilla?

  My end goal is to get Erlang syntax highlighting in QsciScintilla using PyQt4 and Python 2.6. I'm running on Windows 7, but will also need Ubuntu support. PyQt4 is missing the necessary wrapper code for the Erlang lexer/highlighter that "base" scintilla has, so I figured I'd write a lightweight one on top of QsciLexerCustom. It's a little bit problematic, because the Qsci wrapper seems to really want to talk about line+index rather than offset-from-start when getting/setting subranges of text. Meanwhile, the lexer gets arguments as offset-from-start. For now, I get a copy of the entire text, and split that up as appropriate. I have the following lexer, and I apply it with setLexer(). It gets all the appropriate calls when I open a new file and sets this as the lexer, and prints a bunch of appropriate lines based on what it's doing... but there is no styling in the document. I tried making all the defined styles red, and the document is still stubbornly black-on-white, so apparently the styles don't really "take effect" What am I doing wrong? If nobody here knows, what's the appropriate discussion forum where people might actually know these things? (It's an interesting intersection between Python, Qt and Scintilla, so I imagine the set of people who would know is small) Let's assume prefs.declare() just sets up a dict that returns the value for the given key (I've verified this -- it's not the problem). • Formatting Telerik Chart and Legend Labels in Silverlight

  I am trying to format a column called 'Month' using the 3-character month abbreviation in my data grid which is bound to a bar chart. My grid and chart are based on this demo example: http://demos.telerik.com/silverlight/#Chart/Aggregates. Basically, the grid compiles data and summarizes by Year, Quarter, Month, and then some other categories as well. For the Month column, I tried two different methods (for sorting purposes, I have to use an integer or some date value for the month). First, I just made Month an integer field and then used a converter mapped in the xaml for the 'Month' field to display 'JAN', 'FEB', etc. This worked fine for the grid, but the chart would display 1, 2, etc. instead of the month abbreviation. I researched this and was not able to come up with a solution to map the converter to the chart. So, I tried making the Month field a datetime and then set the value to 1/1/1900, 2/1/1900, etc. and specified the format of the field to 'MMM' in the xaml for the grid. I then used the following statement to set the the format in the chart when the user grouped by month: SalesAnalysisChart.DefaultView.ChartArea.AxisX.DefaultLabelFormat = "MMM"; This partially worked in that when the months were displayed across the x-axis they were labeled properly, but not when they appeared in the legend (the user, of course, can group by any of the columns which may or may not include month). I've tried setting LegendItemLabelFormat, ItemLabelFormat, etc. but without success. I'm not sure of the element on which to set the property. I only need to change the default format for just the Month column - all other columns should display normally when grouped. I also came across a class called 'LegendItemFormatConverter' which looks promising but I can't find any examples as to how to implement it. I would actually prefer the converter method because the converter I wrote displays the month abbreviation in all caps, whereas the 'MMM' format displays in upper/lower case. • Entity Framework RC1 DbContext query issue

  I'm trying to implement the repository pattern using entity framework code first rc 1. The problem I am running into is with creating the DbContext. I have an ioc container resolving the IRepository and it has a contextprovider which just news up a new DbContext with a connection string in a windsor.config file. With linq2sql this part was no problem but EF seems to be choking. I'll describe the problem below with an example. The repository pattern doesn't know anything about PlssContext. The best I thought I could do was create a DbContext with the connection string to the sqlexpress database and query the data that way. The connection string in the var context2 was grabbed from the context after newing up the PlssContext object. So they are pointing at the same sqlexpress database. The first query works. The second query fails miserably with this error: The model backing the 'DbContext' context has changed since the database was created. Either manually delete/update the database, or call Database.SetInitializer with an IDatabaseInitializer instance.   I have a movie collection catalogue with local links to folders and files for an easy access. Recently I reorganaized my entire hard disk space and I need to update the links and I'm trying to do that automatically with perl. I can export the data in a xml file and import it again. I can extract the new filepaths with the use of File::Find but I'm stuck with two problems. I have no idea how to connect the $title from the new filepath with the corresponding $title from the xml file. I'm dealing with such files for the first time and I don't know how to proceed with the replacement process. I'm playing around with an Ajax powered search engine trying to find the best tradeoff between data-volume and client-side processing time. Currently my AJAX search returns 40k of (JQM-enhanced markup), which avoids any client-side enhancement. This way I'm getting by without the page stalling for about 2-3 seconds, while JQM enhances all elements in the search results. What I'm curious is whether I can gzip Ajax responses sent from Coldfusion. • Problems with blocking reads using libudev on Linux

  We are using the following routine (on Linux, with libudev) to read data from a PIC microcontroller configured as a USB HID device. The data is sent only when a button connected to the PIC microcontroller is pressed or released. The routine is missing messages from the PIC controller, and I suspect that this is because the call to poll below is not behaving as it should. The call to poll will reliably block for 1 second util the first message is read. As soon as the first message is read, the call to poll returns immediately instead of blocking for 1 second (1000 milliseconds) like it should. I have worked around this problem by closing and re-opening the device after each read. • Android passing an arraylist back to parent activity

  Hi there. I've been searching for a simple example of this with no luck. In my android application I have two activities: 1. The main activity which is launched at startup 2. A second activity which is launched by pressing a button on the main activty. When the second activity is finished (by pressing a button) I want it to send back an ArrayList of type MyObject to the main activity and close itself, which the main activity can then do whatever with it. How would I go about achieving this? I have been trying a few things but it is crashing my application when I start the second activity. Here is a sample code I plan to use, but I'm missing the part where the main activity catches the Intent and passes it to the new activity on start : 1. myTabs.java == This is where I think I need to add some code to pass the data between TabOne and TabTwo. • Two-way databinding of a custom templated control. Eval works, but not Bind.

  I hate long code snippets and I'm sorry about this one, but it turns out that this asp.net stuff can't get much shorter and it's so specific that I haven't been able to generalize it without a full code listing. I just want simple two-way, declarative databinding to a single instance of an object. Not a list of objects of a type with a bunch of NotImplementedExceptions for Add, Delete, and Select, but just a single view-state persisted object. This is certainly something that can be done but I've struggled with an implementation for years. This newest, closest implementation was inspired by this article from 4-Guys-From-Rolla, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa478964.aspx. Unfortunately, after implementing, I'm getting the following error and I don't know what I'm missing: System.InvalidOperationException: Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. If I don't use Bind(), and only use Eval() functionality, it works. In that way, the error is especially confusing.   I have a few questions on good programming design. I'm going to first describe the project I'm building so you are better equipped to help me out. I am coding a Remote Assistance Tool similar to TeamViewer, Microsoft Remote Desktop, CrossLoop. It will incorporate concepts like UDP networking (using Lidgren networking library), NAT traversal (since many computers are invisible behind routers nowadays), Mirror Drivers (using DFMirage's Mirror Driver (http://www.demoforge.com/dfmirage.htm) for realtime screen grabbing on the remote computer). That being said, this program has a concept of being a client-server architecture, but I made only one program with both the functionality of client and server. That way, when the user runs my program, they can switch between giving assistance and receiving assistance without having to download a separate client or server module. I have a Windows Form that allows the user to choose between giving assistance and receiving assistance. I have another Windows Form for a file explorer module. I have another Windows Form for a chat module. I have another Windows Form form for a registry editor module. I have another Windows Form for the live control module. So I've got a Form for each module, which raises the first question: 1. Should I process module-specific commands inside the code of the respective Windows Form? Meaning, let's say I get a command with some data that enumerates the remote user's files for a specific directory. Obviously, I would have to update this on the File Explorer Windows Form and add the entries to the ListView. Should I be processing this code inside the Windows Form though? Or should I be handling this in another class (although I have to eventually pass the data to the Form to draw, of course). Or is it like a hybrid in which I process most of the data in another class and pass the final result to the Form to draw? So I've got like 5-6 forms, one for each module. The user starts up my program, enters the remote machine's ID (not IP, ID, because we are registering with an intermediary server to enable NAT traversal), their password, and connects. Now let's suppose the connection is successful. Then the user is presented with a form with all the different modules. So he can open up a File Explorer, or he can mess with the Registry Editor, or he can choose to Chat with his buddy. So now the program is sort of idle, just waiting for the user to do something. If the user opens up Live Control, then the program will be spending most of it's time receiving packets from the remote machine and drawing them to the form to provide a 'live' view. 2. Second design question. A spin off question #1. How would I pass module-specific commands to their respective Windows Forms? What I mean is, I have a class like "NetworkHandler.cs" that checks for messages from the remote machine. NetworkHandler.cs is a static class globally accessible. So let's say I get a command that enumerates the remote user's files for a specific directory. How would I "give" that command to the File Explorer Form. I was thinking of making an OnCommandReceivedEvent inside NetworkHandler, and having each form register to that event. When the NetworkHandler received a command, it would raise the event, all forms would check it to see if it was relevant, and the appropriate form would take action. Is this an appropriate/the best solution available? 3. The networking library I'm using, Lidgren, provides two options for checking networking messages. One can either poll ReadMessage() to return null or a message, or one can use an AutoResetEvent OnMessageReceived (I'm guessing this is like an event). Which one is more appropriate?

• Can I retrieve objects from a complex query that limits results to fields from a single table?

  I have a model whose rows I always want to sort based on the values in another associated model and I was thinking that the way to implement this would be to use set_dataset in the model. This is causing query results to be returned as hashes rather than objects, though, so none of the methods from the class can be used when iterating over the dataset. I basically have two classes class SortFields < Sequel::Model(:sort_fields) set_primary_key :objectid end class Items < Sequel::Model(:items) set_primary_key :objectid one_to_one :sort_fields, :class => SortFields, :key => :objectid end Some backstory: the data is imported from a legacy system into mysql. The values in sort_fields are calculated from multiple other associated tables (some one-to-many, some many-to-many) according to some complicated rules. The likely solution will be to just add the values in sort_fields to items (I want to keep the imported data separate from the calculated data, but I don't have to). First, though, I just want to understand how far you can go with a dataset and still get objects rather than hashes. • Android inserting into SQLite JSON object

  I'm trying to insert the below json response from a server into my sqlite DB and then read from the DB. The problem I am getting is that when I run my code it compiles fine and runs with no errors. But when trying to read from the DB I just get back what seems like an empty string so I know that the table is being created. I have the correct permissions within the manifest. I have also reference all my classes within there. {"locations": [{"locations":"Newcastle","location_id":"1"},{"locations":"London","location_id":"2"},{"locations":"Sunderland","location_id":"3"}]} Below where I use: Log.v("one", one); Log.v("two", two); below It only prints out the first set within the JSON object so Newcastle and 1.
