• Java 7 update 6 installation fails on Windows 7 when Chrome is default browser

  I am configuring a brand new Lenovo U410 system with Windows 7 Home Premium for a user. I received the system direct from the shop. As part of the configuration I installed Java using the online installer. This worked correctly. Later, due to a mistake I made, I needed to restore the system to factory default. The factory default FORMATS C:\ and puts back (supposedly) the exact factory configuration. However, after doing this, I was no longer able to install Java successfully using the same method I used before. Now, whenever I attempt to use the online Java installer, the following happens. First of all, a window always appears "Welcome to Java", "Downloading Java Installer...". After short time this window disappears and then one of three things happens: The very first time I do this after doing a factory reset, I get a Windows error report, which contains this information: Application Name: JavaSetup7u5.exe Application Version: 7.0.50.6 Application Timestamp: 4feacd84 Fault Module Name: JavaIC.dll Fault Module Version: 9.9.9.9 Fault Module Timestamp: 4f2343d6 Exception Offset: 000052cb Exception Code: c0000417 Exception Data: 00000000 OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 773c Additional Information 2: 773cd78cf06816f8246f359fa270f3bb Additional Information 3: f51a Additional Information 4: f51aaea7d22f36fa9e3a626b5a5cd1c3 2. Subsequent runs produce either this error message: "Error: Java(TM) installer - Downloaded file C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp\fx-runtime.exe is corrupt." or Nothing happens at all. I Believe this is a red herring. Running the installer again causes a different error because the files were downloaded and the installer crashed before it could clean up. This isn't the actual problem, as when this happens the installer deletes the downloaded files, and then when you run it for the third time, it downloads everything again and does the javaic.dll crash. I suspect the downloader is appending to the existing files or something, causing the corruption. I have tried all of the above as Administrator and as a normal user. I have tried reseting the system to factory defaults several times. I have tried downloading with Chrome and Internet Explorer 9. I have tried uninstalling all anti-virus software and disabling the windows firewall entirely. The only thing which makes a difference is running the installer in Windows XP compatibility mode, which allows the installation to complete. I know I can workaround this error by using the offline installer so please don't post that as an answer. I am looking for an explanation of the root cause. Additionally, if I use the offline installer, the updater does not work. The updater also does not work if I install in XP mode. The updater fails because it works by just downloading the newest online setup and running it. Also remember that the installers are digitally signed. The signitures verify correctly so there is no way in hell that this is caused by corrupted downloads. Some theories I have: The Java setup files on java.com actually changed in between the first successful install and my later attempts. Seems unlikely as none of the version numbers have changed. However, I have seen a couple of reports of this error which showed up in the past 24 hours. This looks like the most likely explanation right now: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/1735645 - Oracle released 7 update 6 two days ago. Careful inspection of the installers reveal that they are in fact attempting to download .6, not .5 as the download page claims. Not actually correct. Only the update tool tries to install 7u6. The online installer still tries 7u5. However, 7u6 being released two days ago is too much of a coincidence to ignore. Update: The 7u6 online installer is available from Oracle technetwork. It crashes in exactly the same way. The factory reset software uses GMT-8 and I am on GMT-1. As a result, after factory reset, any software which cares to check would think that the system was restored 7 hours in the future, due to Window's awful policy of storing local time in the system clock. This could be confusing a certificate check or similar. Update: I discovered that this does cause Windows Update to fail. The workaround, setting the clock back before starting factory reset, does not enable Java to install correctly. The factory reset image isn't really the same as what is installed in the main partition when you buy the system. Naughty Lenovo. The installer appears to crash while installing or displaying something to do with the Ask.com toolbar. That seems to be what javaic.dll does. Microsoft Tuesday was the 14th. Some update in that could be causing this. However, I'm factory reseting the machine every time, so unless the patches get slipstreamed into the recovery image, or there is some mechanism by which they get silently installed even if updates are disabled, then I don't see how this can be the cause. Major breakthrough: The default browser on Lenovo systems is Google Chrome. I noticed that the JavaIC.dll "sponsor check" actually does a check on your default browser in order to decide which sponsor ad to display. Normally that would get you the Ask toolbar on IE9. But that toolbar doesn't work on Chrome, and so the installer tries to display a different ad. The different ad is what causes the crash. Changing the default browser to IE9 allows the installer to run correctly. So this looks like a genuine bug in the sponsor ad code in the installer, caused by a combination of Google Chrome default browser and not being in the US. (Installer also checks your location using IP geolocation service and displays different ads based on that.)

• Compiling PHP with GD crashes with EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) on PPC Mac

  First of all, I should say that I have searched the whole Internet for this problem but I couldn't find any solution yet. I have a Mac mini PowerPC (PPC) and I run Apache webserver (httpd-2.2.22) with PHP (5.4.0) and I do all the configure & compilation jobs by myself. If configure with: './configure' '--prefix=/usr/local/php5' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc' '--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-zlib' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' '--with-openssl=/usr' '--without-iconv' '--enable-exif' '--enable-ftp' '--enable-mbstring' '--enable-mbregex' '--enable-sockets' '--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-pdo-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-mysqli=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config' '--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs' '--with-mcrypt' then the PHP works flawlessly. But if I add the GD module by adding these to the script above: '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local/lib' '--with-freetype-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-png-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6' the PHP gets configured and compiled without any errors but it causes EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) (see the Crash Reporter log below) when I request a page which calls PHP module. It's obvious that something related to the GD module is causing this, probably FreeType module because it's present in the log but it may not be definite of course. When the PHP crashes (or more accurately, httpd) the CPU goes 100% for 10 to 15 seconds until it recovers. I need to use the GD module and keep the Mac mini PowerPC. • APC PHP cache size does not exceed 32MB, even though settings allow for more

  I am setting up APC (v 3.1.9) on a high-traffic WordPress installation on CentOS 6.0 64 bit. I have figured out many of the quirks with APC, but something is still not quite right. No matter what settings I change, APC never actually caches more than 32MB. I'm trying to bump it up to 256 MB. 32MB is a default amount for apc.shm_size, so I am wondering if it's stuck there somehow. I have run the following echo '2147483648' > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax to increase my system's shared memory to 2G (half of my 4G box). Then ran ipcs -lm which returns ------ Shared Memory Limits -------- max number of segments = 4096 max seg size (kbytes) = 2097152 max total shared memory (kbytes) = 8388608 min seg size (bytes) = 1 Also made a change in /etc/sysctl.conf then ran sysctl -p to make the settings stick on the server. Rebooted, too, for good measure. This is confirmed as refreshing the apc.php page shows cached file counts that move up and down (implying that the cache is not holding onto all of its files). Does anyone have an idea of how to get APC to use more than 32 MB for its cache size?? **Note that the identical behavior occurs for eaccelerator, xcache, and APC. • Can't remove JPanel from JFrame while adding new class into it

  Basically, I have my Frame class, which instantiates all the properties for the JFrame, and draws a JLabel with an image (my title screen). Then I made a separate JPanel with a start button on it, and made a mouse listener that will allow me to remove these objects while adding in a new Board() class (Which paints the main game). *Note: The JLabel is SEPARATE from the JPanel, but it still gets moved to the side by it. Problem: Whenever I click the button though, it only shows a little square of what I presume is my board class trying to run.   I have a collection of webapps that are running under tomcat. Tomcat is configured to have as much as 2 GB of memory using the -Xmx argument. Many of the webapps need to perform a task that ends up making use of the following code: Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime(); Process process = runtime.exec(command); process.waitFor(); ... The issue we are having is related to the way that this "child-process" is getting created on Linux (Redhat 4.4 and Centos 5.4). It's my understanding that an amount of memory equal to the amount tomcat is using needs to be free in the pool of physical (non-swap) system memory initially for this child process to be created. When we don't have enough free physical memory, we are getting this: java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148) at java.lang.ProcessImpl.start(ProcessImpl.java:65) at java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(ProcessBuilder.java:452) ... 28 more My questions are: 1) Is it possible to remove the requirement for an amount of memory equal to the parent process being free in the physical memory? I'm looking for an answer that allows me to specify how much memory the child process gets or to allow java on linux to access swap memory. 2) What are the alternatives to Runtime.getRuntime().exec() if no solution to #1 exists? I could only think of two, neither of which is very desirable. JNI (very un-desirable) or rewriting the program we are calling in java and making it it's own process that the webapp communicates with somehow. There has to be others. 3) Is there another side to this problem that I'm not seeing that could potentially fix it? Lowering the amount of memory used by tomcat is not an option. Increasing the memory on the server is always an option, but seems like more a band-aid. Servers are running java 6.

• Java Web Service - Faulty Services - ClassNotFound Exception

  My Project has 2 java files (A.java and B.java in same package). A.java uses methods in B.java. And, an external jar has been added in the project build path. In order to create a web service (bottom up) from the class, I created a new Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse with axis2 as the runtime platform, and imported A.java and B.java source files. Next, since all my methods that need to be exposed are contained in A.java, I right click on it and created web service using the standard settings. When I deploy the web service on my apache, I get "Fault Service" and a few ClassNotFound Exceptions for some of the classes in my external jar file (I have already imported it as an external jar). Does the external jar needs to be imported in another way?

Using this setup, I can get the demo application that came in the JacORB download to run successfully. The only difference I can tell is that my test is using the Tie method to get the POA. There are some policies that go into that, but I can't find any information on what policies need to go in there to enable SSL, if any. I'm not even sure that's the problem as the JacORB demo doesn't set any policies on the server or poa. When I run the -Djavax.net.debug=ssl, I can see the keystores load up the trusted certs on both the client and the server. I'm just not sure what policies are being referred to here, but it's odd that the demo works and the test doesn't using the exact same keystores and properties. I've emailed the mailing list, but I'm not holding out much hope as that doesn't seem to be very active. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below are my properties files.   Hi, I have this LAMP application with about 900k rows in MySQL and I am having some performance issues. Background - Apart from the LAMP stack , there's also a Java process (multi-threaded) that runs in its own JVM. So together with LAMP & java, they form the complete solution. The java process is responsible for inserts/updates and few selects as well. These inserts/updates are usually in bulk/batch, anywhere between 5-150 rows. The PHP front-end code only does SELECT's. Issue - the PHP/SELECT queries become very slow when the java process is running. When the java process is stopped, SELECT's perform alright. I mean the performance difference is huge. When the java process is running, any action performed on the php front-end results in 80% and more CPU usage for mysqld process. Any help would be appreciated. MySQL is running with default parameters & settings. Software stack - Apache - 2.2.x MySQL -5.1.37-1ubuntu5 PHP - 5.2.10 Java - 1.6.0_15 OS - Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)

  I'm trying to read image from database with Ajax, but I could not read the xmlhttp.responseText to the img src. The image is saved as binary data in database and also retrieved as binary data.   The java library I need (jpcap) only works on java 6, it won't work with java 7 (and I have tried :( ), is it still possible to install java 6 on ubuntu? Only according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java#Choosing_the_default_Java_to_use, 'Oracle (Sun) Java 6 is no longer available to be distributed by Ubuntu, because of license issues' I've tried to use the instructions on the same site but they don't seem to work... • How to store an object in Riak with the Java client?

  I have setup Riak on a Ubuntu machine, and it seam to work if I do riak ping. Now I would like to use the Riak Java client to store an object, but it doesn't work. I get com.basho.riak.client.response.RiakIORuntimeException when I try to store an object. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to test if I can access riak from my java client? I have the following doubts to get clarified:- 1) Advantages and disadvantages of Java SDK and Widget SDK? 2) When to go for Java SDK and Widget SDK? 3) Both Java and Widget applications require the latest blackberry OS 5.0? OR whether they are compatible with the lower versions as well? 4) Whatever developed with Java SDK can be done with widget SDK? similarly the vice-versa? 5) Is it possible to create the .java classes for Widget application development? 6) Whether all the blackberry models supports both Java and Widget ? 7) What are the Databases the blackberry Java and Widget supports?
