  • Compiling scalafx for Java 7u7 (that contains JavaFX 2.2) on OS X

    - by akauppi
    The compilation instructions of scalafx says to do: export JAVAFX_HOME=/Path/To/javafx-sdk2.1.0-beta sbt clean compile package make-pom package-src However, with the new packaging of JavaFX as part of the Java JDK itself (i.e. 7u7 for OS X) there no longer seems to be such a 'javafx-sdkx.x.x' folder. The Oracle docs say that JavaFX JDK is placed alongside the main Java JDK (in same folders). So I do: $ export JAVAFX_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_07.jdk $ sbt clean [warn] Using project/plugins/ (/Users/asko/Sources/scalafx/project/plugins) for plugin configuration is deprecated. [warn] Put .sbt plugin definitions directly in project/, [warn] .scala plugin definitions in project/project/, [warn] and remove the project/plugins/ directory. [info] Loading project definition from /Users/asko/Sources/scalafx/project/plugins/project [info] Loading project definition from /Users/asko/Sources/scalafx/project/plugins [error] java.lang.NullPointerException [error] Use 'last' for the full log. Project loading failed: (r)etry, (q)uit, (l)ast, or (i)gnore? Am I doing something wrong or is scalafx not yet compatible with the latest Java release (7u7, JavaFX 2.2). What can I do? http://code.google.com/p/scalafx/ Addendum ..and finally (following Igor's solution below) sbt run launches the colorful circles demo easily (well, if one has a supported GPU that is). Oracle claims that "JavaFX supports graphic hardware acceleration on any Mac OS X system that is Lion or later" but I am inclined to think the NVidia powered Mac Mini I'm using does software rendering. A recent MacBook Air (core i7) is a complete different beast! :)

  • Can't get my Jscrollpane working in my Jtextarea

    - by Bobski
    I've looked around quite a lot on google and followed several examples however I can't seem to get my JScrollPane working on a textarea in a JPanel. import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.lang.*; import javax.swing.event.*; class main { public static void main(String Args[]) { frame f1 = new frame(); } } class frame extends JFrame { JButton B = new JButton("B"); JButton button = new JButton("A"); JTextArea E = new JTextArea("some lines", 10, 20); JScrollPane scrollBar = new JScrollPane(E); JPanel grid = new JPanel (); frame() { setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); setSize(500,800); setTitle("Mobile Phone App"); setLocationRelativeTo(null); E.setLineWrap(true); E.setEditable(false); grid.add(button); button.addActionListener(new action()); grid.add(B); B.addActionListener(new action()); //grid.add(E); grid.getContentPane().add(scrollBar); add(grid); setVisible(true); } class action implements ActionListener { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { String V = E.getText(); if(e.getSource() == button) { E.setText(V + "A is pressed"); } if(e.getSource() == B) { E.setText(V + "B is pressed"); } } } } Would be great if someone can see where I am going wrong. I added JscrollPane in which I added the text area "e" in it.

  • How to convert a list object to bigdecimal in prepared statement?

    - by user1103504
    I am using prepared statement for bulk insertion of records. Iam iterating a list which contains values and their dataTypes differ. One of the data type is BigDecimal and when i try to set calling preparedstatement, it is throwing null pointer exception. My code int count = 1; for (int j = 0; j < list.size(); j++) { if(list.get(j) instanceof Timestamp) { ps.setTimestamp(count, (Timestamp) list.get(j)); } else if(list.get(j) instanceof java.lang.Character) { ps.setString(count, String.valueOf(list.get(j))); } else if(list.get(j) instanceof java.math.BigDecimal) { ps.setBigDecimal(count, (java.math.BigDecimal)list.get(j)); } else { ps.setObject(count, list.get(j)); } count++; } I tried 2 ways to convert, casting the object and tried to create a new object of type BigDecimal ps.setBigDecimal(count, new BigDecimal(list.get(j).toString)); both donot solve my problem. It is throwing null pointer exception. help is appreciated. Thanks

  • ADO.NET Data Services Media type requires a ';' character before a parameter definition.

    - by idahosaedokpayi
    I am experimenting with ADO.NET and I am seeing this error on the second attempt to browse the service: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes" ?> <error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ado/2007/08/dataservices/metadata"> <code /> <message xml:lang="en-US">Media type requires a ';' character before a parameter definition.</message> </error> The first attempt is normal. I am working with an exactly identical service on an internal development network and it is fine. I am including my connection string: <add name="J4Entities" connectionString="metadata=res://*;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string=&quot;Data Source=MNSTSQL01N;Initial Catalog=J4;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True&quot;" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient"/> and my Data service class: using System; using System.Data.Services; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.ServiceModel.Web; public class Data : DataService< J4Model.J4Entities > { // This method is called only once to initialize service-wide policies. public static void InitializeService(IDataServiceConfiguration config) { // TODO: set rules to indicate which entity sets and service operations are visible, updatable, etc. // Examples: config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllRead); // config.SetServiceOperationAccessRule("MyServiceOperation", ServiceOperationRights.All); } } Is there something obvious I am not doing?

  • Javascript style variables with "-" in their name aren't able to be changed?

    - by William
    Okay, so this bug has cost me quite a bit of time and embarrassment. It seems that any style variable with a - in it's name can't be modified by javascript. As seen here: <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <title>Class Test</title> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <style> body { text-align: center; background-color: #ffffff;} #box { position: absolute; left: 610px; top: 80px; height: 50px; width: 50px; background-color: #ff0000; color: #000000;} </style> <script type="text/javascript"> var box = 0; </script> </head> <body> <div id="box" ></div> <script type="text/javascript"> box = document.getElementById('box'); box.style.background-color = "#0000ff"; </script> </body> </html> The box in said example will just remain red. So how do I change a style variable with a - in it's name?

  • initWithContentsOfURL seems to have issues with "long" URLs

    - by samsam
    Hi there I'm facing a rather strange Issue when trying to load data from an XML-Webservice. The webservice allows me to pass separated identifiers within the URL-Request. It is therefore possible for the URL to become rather long (240 characters). If I open said URL in firefox the response arrives as planned, if I execute the following code xmlData remains empty. NSString *baseUrl = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:[[[[kSearchDateTimeRequestTV stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"{LANG}" withString:appLanguageCode] stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"{IDENTIFIERS}" withString:myIdentifiers] stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"{STARTTICKS}" withString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", [[startTime getTicks] descriptionWithLocale:nil]]] stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"{ENDTICKS}" withString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", [[endTime getTicks] descriptionWithLocale:nil]]]]; NSLog(baseUrl); //looks good, if openend in browser, returnvalue is ok urlRequest = [NSURL URLWithString:baseUrl]; NSString *xmlData = [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL:urlRequest encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&err]; //err is nil, therefore i guess everything must be ok... :( NSLog(xmlData); //nothing... is there any sort of URL-Length restriction, does the same problem happened to anyone of you as well? whats a good workaround? thanks for your help sam

  • ExpandableListView.setAdapter() throws IllegalStateException

    - by vijay
    I am getting the following exception: java.lang.IllegalStateException: get field slot from row 0 col -1 failed when I call setAdapter() on my ExpandableListView. Can someone please help me fix this problem? (I have already wasted 2 days :( ) Cursor mCursor = tasksListCursor(); Log.i("ChronicleTaskList", "rowcount: "+mCursor.getCount()); startManagingCursor(mCursor); boolean flag = mCursor.moveToFirst(); while (flag) { // This loop executes fine. long id = mCursor.getLong(mCursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(ChronicleDb.KEY_ID)); String name = mCursor.getString(mCursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(ChronicleDb.KEY_NAME)); long from = mCursor.getLong(mCursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(ChronicleDb.KEY_FROM)); long to = mCursor.getLong(mCursor.getColumnIndexOrThrow(ChronicleDb.KEY_TO)); Log.i("ChronicleTaskList", id + ", "+ name+ ", "+ from+ ", "+to); flag = mCursor.moveToNext(); } String[] grpFromCols = { ChronicleDb.KEY_NAME}; int[] grpToVals = { R.id.cGroupRowTextName }; String[] fromCols = { TasksDbAdapter.KEY_TODODATE, TasksDbAdapter.KEY_NAME }; int[] toVals = { R.id.textViewDate2, R.id.taskRowTextTask }; ChronicleTreeListAdapterSimple adapter = new ChronicleTreeListAdapterSimple(this, mCursor, R.layout.c_group_row, grpFromCols, grpToVals, R.layout.task_row2, fromCols, toVals, true); expandableListView.setAdapter(adapter); The last line throws the exception. And the Adapter looks like this: public class ChronicleTreeListAdapterSimple extends SimpleCursorTreeAdapter { protected static String TAG = "ChronicleTreeListAdapter"; public ChronicleTreeListAdapterSimple( ChronicleTaskList context, Cursor cursor, int groupLayout, String[] groupFrom, int[] groupTo, int childLayout, String[] childFrom, int[] childTo, boolean showGroupName) { super(context, cursor, groupLayout, groupFrom, groupTo, childLayout, childFrom, childTo); taskList = context; }

  • CSS 100 percent height body and element

    - by Tim
    I am having an issue making one of my elements 100% within an overall layout that is 100%. I have tried different positioning solutions and I either end up with hidden content the floats behind the footer at the bottom, or the content ends up going behind the footer, and carrys on after the footer. Here is what I have for the page layout. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en-US"> <head> <style> *{margin:0} html,body{margin:0; padding:0; height:100%} .wrapper{position:relative; margin:0 auto -200px; height:auto !important; height:100%; min-height:100%} .container{width:930px; margin:0 auto; text-align:left} .right{float:right; width:680px; background:#FFF; margin:60px 10px 0 0; padding:0} .left{float:left; width:240px} .content{padding:10px} .footer{position:absolute; width:100%} .footer,.push{height:200px} </style> </head> <body> <div class="wrapper"> left content footer </div> </body> </html> The layout for the page being 100% height and footer at the bottom works it just the div with the class name content that I would like to be 100% as well and push the footer further down if the content reaches the footer and not disappear. • Trouble swapping values as keys in generic java BST class

    - by user1729869
    I was given a generic binary search tree class with the following declaration: public class BST<K extends Comparable<K>, V> I was asked to write a method that reverses the BST such that the values become the keys and keys become values. When I call the following method (defined in the class given) reverseDict.put(originalDict.get(key), key); I get the following two error messages from Netbeans: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Uncompilable source code - Erroneous sym type: BST.put And also: no suitable method found for put(V,K) method BST.put(BST<K,V>.Node,K,V) is not applicable (actual and formal argument lists differ in length) method BST.put(K,V) is not applicable (actual argument V cannot be converted to K by method invocation conversion) where V,K are type-variables: V extends Object declared in method <K,V>reverseBST(BST<K,V>) K extends Comparable<K> declared in method <K,V>reverseBST(BST<K,V>) From what the error messages are telling me, since my values do not extend Comparable I am unable to use them as keys. If I am right, how can I get around that without changing the class given (maybe a cast)?

  • rendering a TextView in a Bitmap for an android widget

    - by foke
    I'm building a widget which displays some text. By widget I mean the kind which lies on the desktop. The problem is that I want to change text's font at runtime. There is several textview I would like, at runtime, to set the first as bold, the second blue and italic for example, etc. I came up with this : TextView tv = new TextView(context); tv.setText(stringToDisplay); tv.setTextColor(0xa00050ff); // example tv.setTextSize(30); // example Bitmap b = loadBitmapFromView(tv); updateViews.setImageViewBitmap(R.id.id_of_the_imageview, b); with private static Bitmap loadBitmapFromView(View v) { Bitmap b = Bitmap.createBitmap(v.getLayoutParams().width, v.getLayoutParams().height, Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888); Canvas c = new Canvas(b); v.layout(0, 0, v.getLayoutParams().width, v.getLayoutParams().height); v.draw(c); return b; } but it wont work (NullPointerException on first line of loadBitmap), until I replace v.getLayoutParams().width, v.getLayoutParams().height by fixed sizes like 250, 50 Bitmap b = Bitmap.createBitmap(250, 50, Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888); // ... v.layout(0, 0, 250, 50); But that's not a good solution ... so I tried this : LayoutInflater li = (LayoutInflater) context.getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); View row = li.inflate(R.layout.widget_text, null); TextView tv = (TextView) row.findViewById(R.id.id_of_the_textview); widget_text being a layout similar to the displayed one but with TextViews instead of ImageViews, in the hope to get some size information out of it .. but it's not working and I get this exception : 01-02 17:35:06.001: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(11025): Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: width and height must be > 0 on the call to Bitmap.createBitmap() so, someone could point me in the right direction?

  • How to encrypt a RSAKey using another RSAKey?

    - by Tom Brito
    I know its not the usual thing to do. But the specification I'm implementing is discribed this way, and I cannot run out. I was trying to encrypt the modulus and exponent of the private key, but the following test code raises an exception because the byte array is 1 byte larger then the maximum allowed by RSA block: import java.security.KeyPair; import java.security.KeyPairGenerator; import java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException; import java.security.NoSuchProviderException; import java.security.interfaces.RSAPrivateKey; import java.security.interfaces.RSAPublicKey; import javax.crypto.Cipher; import org.apache.commons.lang.ArrayUtils; public class TEST { public static KeyPair generateKeyPair() throws NoSuchAlgorithmException, NoSuchProviderException { KeyPairGenerator keyPairGenerator = KeyPairGenerator.getInstance("RSA", "BC"); keyPairGenerator.initialize(1024); return keyPairGenerator.generateKeyPair(); } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { KeyPair keyPair = generateKeyPair(); RSAPrivateKey privateKey = (RSAPrivateKey) keyPair.getPrivate(); System.out.println("Priv modulus len = " + privateKey.getModulus().bitLength()); System.out.println("Priv exponent len = " + privateKey.getPrivateExponent().bitLength()); System.out.println("Priv modulus toByteArray len = " + privateKey.getModulus().toByteArray().length); byte[] byteArray = privateKey.getModulus().toByteArray(); // the byte at index 0 have no value (in every generation it is always zero) byteArray = ArrayUtils.subarray(byteArray, 1, byteArray.length); System.out.println("byteArray size: " + byteArray.length); RSAPublicKey publicKey = (RSAPublicKey) keyPair.getPublic(); Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("RSA", "BC"); cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, publicKey); byte[] encryptedBytes = cipher.doFinal(byteArray); System.out.println("Success!"); } } (obs. its just a test, i would never encrypt the private key with its pair public key) The byte array is 128 bytes, the exactly maximum allowed by a RSA block, so why the exception? And how to fix it?

  • Hibernate CreateSQL Query Problem

    - by Shaded
    Hello All I'm trying to use hibernates built in createsql function but it seems that it doesn't like the following query. List =hibernateSession.createSQLQuery("SELECT number, location FROM table WHERE other_number IN (SELECT f.number FROM table2 AS f JOIN table3 AS g on f.number = g.number WHERE g.other_number = " + var + ") ORDER BY number").addEntity(Table.class).list(); I have a feeling it's from the nested select statement, but I'm not sure. The inner select is used elsewhere in the code and it returns results fine. This is my mapping for the first table: <hibernate-mapping> <class name="org.efs.openreports.objects.Table" table="table"> <id name="id" column="other_number" type="java.lang.Integer"> <generator class="native"/> </id> <property name="number" column="number" not-null="true" unique="true"/> <property name="location" column="location" not-null="true" unique="true"/> </class> </hibernate-mapping> And the .java public class Table implements Serializable { private Integer id;//panel_facility private Integer number; private String location; public Table() { } public void setId(Integer id) { this.id = id; } public Integer getId() { return id; } public void setNumber(Integer number) { this.number = number; } public Integer number() { return number; } public String location() { return location; } public void setLocation(String location) { this.location = location; } } Any suggestions? Edit (Added mapping)

  • Java: Inputting text from a file using split

    - by 00PS
    I am inputting an adjacency list for a graph. There are three columns of data (vertex, destination, edge) separated by a single space. Here is my implementation so far: FileStream in = new FileStream("input1.txt"); Scanner s = new Scanner(in); String buffer; String [] line = null; while (s.hasNext()) { buffer = s.nextLine(); line = buffer.split("\\s+"); g.add(line[0]); System.out.println("Added vertex " + line[0] + "."); g.addEdge(line[0], line[1], Integer.parseInt(line[2])); System.out.println("Added edge from " + line[0] + " to " + line[1] + " with a weight of " + Integer.parseInt(line[2]) + "."); } System.out.println("Size of graph = " + g.size()); Here is the output: Added vertex a. Added edge from a to b with a weight of 9. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException at structure5.GraphListDirected.addEdge(GraphListDirected.java:93) at Driver.main(Driver.java:28) I was under the impression that line = buffer.split("\\s+"); would return a 2 dimensional array of Strings to the variable line. It seemed to work the first time but not the second. Any thoughts? I would also like some feedback on my implementation of this problem. Is there a better way? Anything to help out a novice! :)

    I'm trying to get the hits of a google search from a string of the query. public class Utils { public static int googleHits(String query) throws IOException { String googleAjax = "http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/web?v=1.0&q="; String json = stringOfUrl(googleAjax + query); JsonObject hits = new Gson().fromJson(json, JsonObject.class); return hits.get("estimatedResultCount").getAsInt(); } public static String stringOfUrl(String addr) throws IOException { ByteArrayOutputStream output = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); URL url = new URL(addr); IOUtils.copy(url.openStream(), output); return output.toString(); } public static void main(String[] args) throws URISyntaxException, IOException { System.out.println(googleHits("odp")); } } The following exception is thrown: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException at odp.compling.Utils.googleHits(Utils.java:48) at odp.compling.Utils.main(Utils.java:59) What am I doing incorrectly? Should I be defining an entire object for the Json return? That seems excessive, given that all I want to do is get one value. For reference: the returned JSON structure.

  • eliminating duplicate Enum code

    - by Don
    Hi, I have a large number of Enums that implement this interface: /** * Interface for an enumeration, each element of which can be uniquely identified by it's code */ public interface CodableEnum { /** * Get the element with a particular code * @param code * @return */ public CodableEnum getByCode(String code); /** * Get the code that identifies an element of the enum * @return */ public String getCode(); } A typical example is: public enum IMType implements CodableEnum { MSN_MESSENGER("msn_messenger"), GOOGLE_TALK("google_talk"), SKYPE("skype"), YAHOO_MESSENGER("yahoo_messenger"); private final String code; IMType (String code) { this.code = code; } public String getCode() { return code; } public IMType getByCode(String code) { for (IMType e : IMType.values()) { if (e.getCode().equalsIgnoreCase(code)) { return e; } } } } As you can imagine these methods are virtually identical in all implementations of CodableEnum. I would like to eliminate this duplication, but frankly don't know how. I tried using a class such as the following: public abstract class DefaultCodableEnum implements CodableEnum { private final String code; DefaultCodableEnum(String code) { this.code = code; } public String getCode() { return this.code; } public abstract CodableEnum getByCode(String code); } But this turns out to be fairly useless because: An enum cannot extend a class Elements of an enum (SKYPE, GOOGLE_TALK, etc.) cannot extend a class I cannot provide a default implementation of getByCode(), because DefaultCodableEnum is not itself an Enum. I tried changing DefaultCodableEnum to extend java.lang.Enum, but this doesn't appear to be allowed. Any suggestions that do not rely on reflection? Thanks, Don

  • String Index Out Of Bound Exception error

    - by Fd Fehfhd
    Im not really sure why a am getting this error. But here is my code it is meant to test palindromes disregarding punctuation. So here is my code import java.util.Scanner; public class PalindromeTester { public static void main(String [] args) { Scanner kb = new Scanner(System.in); String txt = ""; int left; int right; int cntr = 0; do { System.out.println("Enter a word, phrase, or sentence (blank line to stop):"); txt = kb.nextLine(); txt = txt.toLowerCase(); char yP; String noP = ""; for (int i = 0; i < txt.length(); i++) { yP = txt.charAt(i); if (Character.isLetterOrDigit(txt.charAt(yP))) { noP += yP; } } txt = noP; left = 0; right = txt.length() -1; while (txt.charAt(left) == txt.charAt(right) && right > left) { left++; right--; } if (left > right) { System.out.println("Palindrome"); cntr++; } else { System.out.println("Not a palindrome"); } } while (!txt.equals("")); System.out.println("You found " + cntr + " palindromes. Thank you for using palindromeTester."); } } And if i test it and then i put enter so it will tell me how many palindromes you found the error i am getting is javav.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundException : String index out of range 0 at PalindromeTester.main(PalindromeTester.java:38) and line 28 is while (txt.charAt(left) == txt.charAt(right) && right > left) Thanks for the help in advance

  • Fill listview from fragment

    - by Bohsen
    I have a layout file containing a listview that I would like to fill with the help of a Fragment. But it continues to give me errors. The layout file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" > <ListView android:id="@+id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" > </ListView> <TableLayout android:id="@+id/details" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:stretchColumns="1" > <Button android:id="@+id/create_patient_button" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@string/create_patient_button" /> </TableLayout> </RelativeLayout> My fragmentActivity: public class BasicFragmentActivity extends FragmentActivity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.create_patient_view); FragmentManager fm = getSupportFragmentManager(); Fragment fragment = fm.findFragmentById(R.id.list); if (fragment == null) { FragmentTransaction ft = fm.beginTransaction(); ft.add(R.id.list, new BasicFragment()); ft.commit(); // Make sure you call commit or your Fragment will not be added. // This is very common mistake when working with Fragments! } } } My ListFragment: public class BasicFragment extends ListFragment { private PatientAdapter pAdapter; @Override public void onActivityCreated(Bundle savedState) { super.onActivityCreated(savedState); pAdapter = new PatientAdapter(getActivity(), GFRApplication.dPatients); setListAdapter(pAdapter); } } The error: java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: addView(View) is not supported in AdapterView

  • What is a good use case for static import of methods?

    - by Miserable Variable
    Just got a review comment that my static import of the method was not a good idea. The static import was of a method from a DA class, which has mostly static methods. So in middle of the business logic I had a da activity that apparently seemed to belong to the current class: import static some.package.DA.*; class BusinessObject { void someMethod() { .... save(this); } } The reviewer was not keen that I change the code and I didn't but I do kind of agree with him. One reason given for not static-importing was it was confusing where the method was defined, it wasn't in the current class and not in any superclass so it too some time to identify its definition (the web based review system does not have clickable links like IDE :-) I don't really think this matters, static-imports are still quite new and soon we will all get used to locating them. But the other reason, the one I agree with, is that an unqualified method call seems to belong to current object and should not jump contexts. But if it really did belong, it would make sense to extend that super class. So, when does it make sense to static import methods? When have you done it? Did/do you like the way the unqualified calls look? EDIT: The popular opinion seems to be that static-import methods if nobody is going to confuse them as methods of the current class. For example methods from java.lang.Math and java.awt.Color. But if abs and getAlpha are not ambiguous I don't see why readEmployee is. As in lot of programming choices, I think this too is a personal preference thing. Thanks for your response guys, I am closing the question.
