• Database Modelling - Conceptually different entities with near identical fields

  Suppose you have two sets of conceptual entities: MarketPriceDataSet which has multiple ForwardPriceEntries PoolPriceForecastDataSet which has multiple PoolPriceForecastEntry Both different child objects have near identical fields: ForwardPriceEntry has StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForwardPrice MarketPriceDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) PoolPriceForecastEntry has StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForecastPoolPrice PoolPriceForecastDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) If I modelled them as separate tables, the only difference would be the foreign key, and the name of the price field. There has been a debate as to whether the two near identical tables should be merged into one. Options I've thought of to model this is: Just keep them as two independent, separate tables Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and a parent_id equalling a foreign key to either parent table. This would sacrifice referential integrity checks. Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and create a complicated sequence of joining tables to maintain referential integrity. What do you think I should do, and why?

  I'm trying to reutilize code that generates FILE fields for use when something is to be added to the database, and grayed out (and disabled) with data already in the database when the item in question is being edited or viewed in detail.   Hey guys, I want to implement a class which can be used by two classes of my project. One is manipulating 'NewsRecord' objects. One is manipulating 'GalleriesRecord' objects. In another class, I may use one of the two objects so i do something like that : // header class id myNewsRecordOrGalleriesRecord; // class.m // NewsRecord and GalleriesRecord have both the title property NSLog(myNewsRecordOrGalleriesRecord.title); and i get : error : request for member 'title' in something not a structure or union any ideas :D ?   I have several libraries made by myself (a geometry library, a linked list library, etc). I want to make a header file to include them all in one lib.h. Could I do something like this: #ifndef LIB_H_ #define LIB_H_ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <linkedlist.h> #include <geometry.h> .... #endif Then I could just reference this one library and actually reference multiple libraries. Is this possible? If not, is there a way around it?

  How do you when using custom fields in Wordpress echo just the first value using foreach? Currently the code is: <?php for(get_field('venue_event') as $post_object): ?> <a href="<?php echo get_permalink($post_object); ?>"><?php echo get_the_title($post_object) ?></a> <?php endforeach; ?> This takes the field from the wordpress page (the field is a link to another page), creates a link to that page using get_permalink but when I want to echo the page title it does it, but then it also echos all other values that are not needed.

• vs2010 Cache SQL data incorrect fields

  OK, I found a walkthrough on msdn for what I was after (offline database cache). However when I let the wizard create a local database from my online sql server the timespan fields are converted to a string?? Now I know the suggestion was to create my own local database and then use the MS Synch framework...however...this proclaims to do it "out of the box" However now I've a dataset which I've no idea how to use, and a database newly formed (for the synched cache) taht I will have to use Ling to Entities with(??) meanwhile I have this weird timespan to string conversion? should I give up now or push on? can i overwrite the the .designer.cs? typeof(string) to typeof(timespan)? damn wizards!!

• Creating C# form fields with events based off of a text file

  I need to generate windows form fields based off of a text file that I am parsing. I also want to automatically generate validation event handlers which all will be basically the same only the form field and the regular expression which is used to validate the field will change. I'm having a difficult time figuring out the quickest and easiest method to go about doing this. Any pointers in the right direction would really be great, maybe even some keywords that I'm missing. I can only imagine this type of question has been covered before, I just don't know what I'm searching for really.

It is an embarrassingly simple and stupid piece of code that I am writing in a test solution before I do something really useful in production code. • XML Schema Header & Namespace Config

  Migrating from DTD to XSD and for some reason the transition is a bumpy one. I understand how to define the schema once I'm inside the <xs:schema> root tag, but getting past the header & namespace declaration stuff is proving to be especially confusing for me. I have been trying to follow the well-laid out tutorial on W3S but even that tutorial seems to assume a lot of knowledge up front. I guess what I'm looking for is a King's English explanation of which attributes do what, where they go, and why: xmlns xmlns:xs xmlns:xsi targetNamespace xsi:schemaLocation And in some cases I see different variations of these elements/attributes, such as xsi which seems to have two different notations like xsi:schemaLocation="..." and xs:import schemaLocation="...". I guess between all these slight variations I can't seem to make heads or tails of what each of these does. Thanks in advance for bringing any clarity to this confusion!

• Using virtual fields in Doctrine_Query

  Is there a way to insert logic based on virtual fields into a Doctrine_Query? I have defined a virtual field in my model, "getStatus()" which I would ultimately like to utilize in a Where clause in my Doctrine_Query. ... ->AndWhere('x.status = ?',$status); "status", however, is not a column in the table it is instead computed by business logic in the model. Filtering the Collection after executing the query works in some situations, but not when a Doctrine_Pager is thrown in the mix, as it computes it's offsets and such before you have access to the Collection. Am I best off ditching Doctrine_Pager and rebuilding that functionality after modifying the Doctrine_Collection?

  What would be the most concise/readable way in a velocity template to join multiple fields with a separator while leaving out empty or null Strings without adding excess separators? As an example we have a tooltip or appointments that goes like: Appointment ($number) [with $employee] [-] [$remarks] [-] [$roomToVisit] Where I used brackets to indicate optional data. When filled in it would normally show as Appointment (3) with John - ballroom - serve Java coffee When $remarks is empty but $roomToVisit is not, this becomes: Appointment (3) with John - ballroom When $remarks is "serve Java coffee" but $roomToVisit is empty we get: Appointment (3) with John - serve Java coffee When both are empty: Appointment (3) with John Bonus: also make the field prefix optional. When only $employee is empty we should get: Appointment (2) serve Java coffee - ballroom Ideally I would like the velocity template to look very similar to the first code box. If this is not possible, how would you achieve this with a minimum of distracting code tags? • What requests do browsers' "F5" and "Ctrl + F5" refreshes generate?

  Is there a standard for what actions F5 and Ctrl+F5 trigger in web browsers? I once did experiment in IE6 and Firefox 2.x. The "F5" refresh would trigger a HTTP request sent to the server with an "If-Modified-Since" header, while "Ctrl+F5" would not have such a header. In my understanding, F5 will try to utilize cached content as much as possible, while "Ctrl+F5" is intended to abandon all cached content and just retrieve all content from the servers again. But today, I noticed that in some of the latest browsers (Chrome, IE8) it doesn't work in this way anymore. Both "F5" and "Ctrl+F5" send the "If-Modified-Since" header. So how is this supposed to work, or (if there is no standard) how do the major browsers differ in how they implement these refresh features?

• Web Service returning object with null fields

  Never seen this one before. WebService.Implementation imp = new WebService.Implementation(); WebService.ImplementationRequest req = new WebService.ImplementationRequest(); return imp.GetValue(req); The object that imp returns is not null. It's returning an ImplementationResponse, as expected. But all of the fields in that object are null. Which is not expected. The WebService, currently, just returns some constant dummy data. We've tested this on another developer's machine, works just fine. I suppose I should also note that the WebService should throw an exception if I pass null into the GetValue method. It doesn't. Not for me. Any idea what could be wrong with my environment that could make a WebService return an object, but make every value in that object null? And somehow 'magically' return this mystery object when it should be throwing an exception?

• Redirecting a large number of URLs with htaccess or php header

  I have undergone a major website overhaul and now have 5,000+ incoming links from search engines and external sites, bookmark services etc that lead to dead pages or 404 errors. A lot of the pages have corresponding "permalinks" or known replacement hierarchy/URL structure. I've started to list the main redirects with htaccess or physical files with simply a header location reidrect which is clearly not sustainable! What would be the best method to list all of the old link addresses and their corresponding new addresses with htaccess, php headers, mysql, sitemap file or is it better to have all broken links and wait for search engines etc to re-index my site? Are there any implications for having a large number of redirecting files for this temporary period until links are reset?

  I would like to generate a Data Dictionary for a SQL Server 2008 database that has one row for each field, and the following columns: table_name field_name data_type link_table (for when the field in question is a foreign key) link_field (for when the field in question is a foreign key) I can get the first 3 columns with something like the SQL script below...but I don't know how to get the last two columns of foreign key information. INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS gets close, but doesn't have the data I'm looking for. Can someone help with this point?   I'm working in ASP.NET in an application where often users want to add fields or change field names. I'd like to be able to have an xml schema in place that is parsed and a dynamic object model created from it that can be accessed throughout the application. My initial reaction is that this is not realistic. I think there is flexibility about the dynamic nature of it. I think the people I'm trying to build this for wouldn't mind recompiling. Even if the app recompiled, I don't know how to abstract away enough in my code access the data to allow for users changing property names, etc. How can you write LINQ when the properties might change? In short, there's two questions here: 1) is there a way to dynamically generate an object model of the database and 2) is there a way to abstract away enough so that code accessing the database doesn't break when properties change?
