• Puppet Directory and File ownership ignored

  Puppet seems to be lying to me, which is not very nice. I am trying to set some files and directories included in /vagrant/src to be 666 and 777, and set the ownership group to the correct Apache user (using the PuppetLabs Apache module).   I'm interested in reading PDF-format ebooks on my Apple iPad. I have half a gig of PDFs I want to transfer to it, from my PC. I'm familiar already with loading EPUB-format titles through iBooks – unfortunately, iBooks doesn't read PDFs so I am looking at using a third-party application. I know many such third-party media viewer applications for the iPad support download from web or email, but that's a hassle. I've heard iTunes 9.1 added support for USB File Transfer, specifically for iPad devices. How does USB File Transfer work in iTunes, for transferring files from my PC to my iPad? • Windows 2003 Server on a domain, XP client PCs on a workgroup - file share without authentication?

  I have a windows 2003 server on a domain and client PCs running XP on a workgroup. I have created a file share on the server that should be accessible by the client PCs. I even set the security and sharing to 'Everyone' just to test. When I try to access the file share from any of the XP machines, I get an authentication prompt that displays asking for credentials, even though 'Everyone' has full control currently (just for testing purposes). Why is it asking to authenticate? I need it to where it doesn't ask to authenticate. I also made sure passwords were set on all XP machines since I found this could be one possible issue and they all were. Any ideas? Thanks!

• What is the simplest and fastest way to transfer large file through a Windows network?

  I have a Window Server 2000 machine running MS SQL Server that stores over 20GB of data. The database is backed-up every day to the second harddrive. I want to transfer those backup files to another computer to build another test server and for recovery practicing. (the backup never actually got restored for almost 5 years. Don't tell my boss about that!) I have trouble transfering that huge file through the network. I've tried plain network copy, apache download, and ftp. Any method I tried end up failing when the amount of data transfered reach 2GB. The last time that I successfully transfered the file, it was through a usb attached external harddrive. But I want to perform this task routinely and preferably automatically. Wonder what is the most pragmatic approach for this situation ?

I used PendingFileRenameOperations key in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager but i've found that it can ONLY be used for simple (not-system) files, because Windows File Protection disables it for system files (see this post). • Online File Sharing that acts just like LAN shared drives, etc.

  Hi All, Have a small business client that wants to move their current file share to the web. Specs are as follows, 20 to 30 GB of space, file sizes are normal (nothing more than 50 to 100 mb) 3 users ideal solution would be exact same functionality as windows explorer. CHEAP!!! But not super cheap. I would like to keep it around $20 per user per month. I've explored a bunch of solutions, but they are all a bit on the complicated side. • Puzzled about PHP file permission and shared webhosting - what are some explanations?

  I have this issue with different web-hosting, particular upload scripts which can only upload to a folder only if it has 777 permission (which is risky). On the test server (on a different webhost), 755 works well. On another web-hosting, log files generated by PHP file functions cannot be write to some time, but other files are mysteriously unaffected (for instance, the log files for the entire week is 655, and they work well, but just today's log-file doesn't work unless it is set to 777). I am more of an application developer than a server backend expert, so these behaviours puzzle me to no end. Why are they happening? What can be done?

  I just tried SparkleShare as a possible replacement for dropbox/insynch. It looks quite promising, being based on open standards. I was wondering if someone has gone though the process of "bootstraping" a SparkleShare project. I have the initial files I would like to keep synchronized on two clients and the server (as plain files). I was wondering if there would be a way to set a project up so that I would not need to download/upload all the files back and forth (as they are readily available on all three systems). • svn project with linked common files

  The src directory of my project is composed by three folders: two sub-projects and some common files. I linked the files of the common directory to the two sub-projects. I've just imported my project to svn but end up with three duplications of the content of the common directory. I'm wondering if svn can deal with this and how. Like an option which specify to not consider links. I thought about deleting in svn linked files from the sub-projects. Thank you, Éric.

• Why is file sharing over internet still working, despite all firewall exceptions for filesharing being disabled?

  Every exception in my windows server firewall that starts with "File and Printer Sharing" is disabled (ordered by name, so that includes domain, public (active), and private profiles). The Network and Sharing Center's options for everything except password protected sharing are off. Why would I still be able to access a network share on that server via an address like "\\my.server.com\" over the internet? The firewall is on for all profiles and blocking incoming connections by default. A "netstat -an" command on the server reveals the share connection is occurring over port 445 (SMB). I restarted the client to ensure it was actually re-establishing a new connection successfully. Is the "Password protected sharing: On" option in Network and Sharing Center bypassing the firewall restrictions, or adding some other exception somewhere that I'm missing? EDIT: "Custom" rules are not the problem. It's the "built-in" rules for Terminal Services that was the problem. Can you believe port 445 (File Sharing Port) has to be wide open to the internet to use Terminal Services Licensing?)

I always check "Upload files on run", in the project configuration. But when I click on run Netbeans selects all files by default (I modified only some). The file checkboxes cannot be disabled at once and you have to do this one by one (imagine you have 5000 files...). That's annoying. Do you know any solution? thank you

Next, A3 is the file name and B3 is the content for the file, etc. ONCE the content reads what is in cell A16 and B16 (length will vary), the file creation should stop, if not then I can delete the additional files created. This sheet will never change. Is there a way to establish the excel macro to always go to this sheet instead of have to select it with the mouse to identify the starting point? 2nd Objective I would like to have the following data to be used to create a text file. A:1 is what I need the name of the file to be. B:B is the content I want in the file. So, A2 - is the file name "geo-sitemap.xml" and B:B to be the content in the file (ignore the .xml file extension in the photo). ONCE the content cell reads what is in cell "B16" (length will vary), the file creation should stop, if not then I can adjust the cells that have need content (formulated content you see in the image is preset for 500 rows). I can Provide the content in the cells that are filled in by excel formulas that are not not to be included in the .txt files. It is ok if it is not possible.   Is there an easy way to open a file as read-only from Windows Explorer? My inmediate interest is in a Microsoft Access file. I am doing some sanity checks in old MS Access databases and I see that their date is automatically updated when I open them. I don't like this, since it will look like all the old files have been modified today. I am working with Windows XP. Update: As Yoda said, "Do, or do not. There is no try." In my case, it was "do not". I ended up copying the entire (big) folder tree to MyDocuments, and then opening all the databases from there.

  I am writing this blog post right after I resolve this error for one of the system. Recently one of the my friend who is expert in infrastructure as well private cloud was working on SQL Server installation. Please note he is seriously expert in what he does but he has never worked SQL Server before and have absolutely no experience with its installation. He was modifying database file and keep on getting following error. As soon as he saw me he asked me where is the maxfile size setting so he can change. Let us quickly re-create the scenario he was facing. Error Message: Msg 5169, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 FILEGROWTH cannot be greater than MAXSIZE for file ‘NewDB’. Creating Scenario: CREATE DATABASE [NewDB] ON PRIMARY (NAME = N'NewDB', FILENAME = N'D:\NewDB.mdf' , SIZE = 4096KB, FILEGROWTH = 1024KB, MAXSIZE = 4096KB) LOG ON (NAME = N'NewDB_log', FILENAME = N'D:\NewDB_log.ldf', SIZE = 1024KB, FILEGROWTH = 10%) GO Now let us see what exact command was creating error for him. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [NewDB] MODIFY FILE ( NAME = N'NewDB', FILEGROWTH = 1024MB ) GO Workaround / Fix / Solution: The reason for the error is very simple. He was trying to modify the filegrowth to much higher value than the maximum file size specified for the database. There are two way we can fix it.   I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

• Changing the BizTalk message output file name

  By default, BizTalk creates the filename of the message dropped to a send port as %MessageID%, which is the unique identifier (GUID) of the message. What if you want to create your own filename? To start, create a simple schema, and a basic orchestration that will receive the message and send it right back out, like this: If you deploy this and wire up the ports, you can drop an xml file into your receive port and have it come out at your send port named something like {7A63CAF8-317B-49D5-871F-9FD57910C3A0}.xml. Now, we'll create a new message with a custom filename. First, create a new orchestration variable called NewFileName, of the type System.String. Next, create a second message using the same schema as the message you're receiving in the Receive shape. Now, drag a Construct Message shape to the orchestration. In the shape's properties, set Messages Constructed to be the new message you just created. Double click the Message Assignment shape (inside the Construct shape...) and paste in the following code: Message_2 = Message_1;   NewFileName = Message_1(FILE.ReceivedFileName); NewFileName = NewFileName.Replace(".xml","_"); NewFileName = NewFileName + "output_" + System.DateTime.Now.Year.ToString() + "-" + System.DateTime.Now.Month.ToString();   Message_2(FILE.ReceivedFileName) = NewFileName; Here we make a copy of the received message, get it's original file name (ReceivedFileName), replace its extension with an underscore, and date-stamp it. Finally, add a Send shape and a Port to the surface, and configure them to send the message you just created. You should wind up with an orchestration like this: Deploy it, and create a new send port. It should be just about identical to the first send port, except this time the file name will be "%SourceFileName%.xml" (without the quotes of course). Fire up the application, drop in a test file, and you should now get both the xml file named with a GUID, and a second file named something along the lines of "MySchemaTestFile_output_2011-6.xml".

I find most of the programme is well structure. Also, a read me. My question are: Is that any common file structure or naming convention in the community or this is just a matter of personal taste? How to become a more organized programmer, instead of writing code just work. But more organized that let other easy to get in your project?
