  I am a Microsoft fan and .Net enthusiast. I want to align my career in the lines of current and future .Net technologies. I have an MCTS in ASP.Net 3.5. The question is about the continuation of certifications and my career growth and maybe a different job! I want to keep pace with future Microsoft .Net technologies. My current job however doesn't allow so.So i bid to do .Net based certifications to stay abreast with latest .Net technologies. My questions: What certifications should i follow next? I have MCTS .Net 3.5 WPF(Exam 70-502) and MCTS .Net 3.5 WCF(Exam 70-504) in my mind so that i can go for Silverlight development and seek jobs related to Silverlight development. What other steps i need to take in order to develop professional expertise in technologies such as WPF, WCF and Silverlight when my current employer is reluctant to shift to latest .Net technologies? I am sure that there are a lot of people of around here who are working with .Net technologies and they have industrial experience. I being a new comer and starter in my career need to take right decision and so i am seeking help from this community in guiding me to the right path. • Got it: OCM 11g

  Today I received a mail stating that I successfully completed my OCM 11g practicum ! I am really satisfied with this result considering the work I did for it. Trying to be best in specialisation area on High Availability (RAC, Exadata, DataGuard) is nice, but it is extra nice to also proof I still have more then enough hands on experience to work on the more 'regular' DBA tasks. Practicing the complete DBA curriculum for OCP/OCM is something I recommend everyone to do since this is really helps you to stay on top, hands on ! • Useful certifications for a young programmer

  As @Paddyslacker elegantly stated in Are certifications worth it? The main purpose of certifications is to make money for the certifying body. I am a fairly young developer, with only an undergraduate degree, and my job is (graciously) offering to sponsor some professional development of my choice (provided it can be argued that it will contribute to the quality of work I do for them). A search online offers a slew of (mostly worthless) certifications one can attain. I'm wondering if there are any that are actually recognized in the (North American) industry as an asset. My local university promoted CIPS (I.S.P., ITCP) at the time I was graduating, but for all I can tell it's just the one that happened to get its foot in the door. It's certainly money grubbing - with a $205 a year fee. So are there any such certifications that provide useful credentials? To better define 'useful' - would it benefit full time developers, or is it only something worth while to the self-employed? Would any certifications lead me to being considered for higher wages, or can that only be achieved with more experience and an higher-level degree?

  What a day, well what a week really. I found out last week that I passed the Microsoft Certified Master Exam and that I needed to decide to sit the Lab part next. I decided to get it done in a few days of down time I have before going to the MVP summit so scheduled it for today. Five and half hours later I had finished, after a few visits to the toilet. • Cisco VPN connection using CertStore as in Windows

  Hello ! In Windows I was using Cisco VPN client to connect with VPN. In connection properties I set only hostname and choose certificate which are stored in C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Certificates. I moved yesterday to Ubuntu and I need to be able to connect with that host using those certificates too. I know that there is vpnc and network-manager-vpnc but it not allows (or I do not know about it) to set cerificates dir. Can someone tell me how to connect with VPN using certificates ?

  I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference? Are the MCPD certifications going to be updated after July?

• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

  The last few months have been pretty manic and Vizioz has been growing successfully into a fully fledged development agency. I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! I understand that it's good to have a certificate for your website (SSL?), if your trying to sell your software but what about your applications ? • How to switch from developer to dba? [on hold]

  I am working as a developer for 3 years and I am thinking of switch to dba. I do not own any certificate nor received any training regarding the daily job of dba. My company also do not offer any chance of work/training related to a dba. If I want to be a dba ( because of the salary and a much stable job than developer ), should I go to get some oracle certificates? I've also heard that you can't be a good dba if you cannot get a good understanding about the working OS such as windows/unix ( and to do that you also need to get some certificate on windows administration or unix administration ) but they recommend book of Rich Stevens over certificate. I am confused on what should I do to make this happen.

  Possible Duplicate: Are certifications worth it? I am at the point in my career where people start to veer off into either management-type roles or they focus on solidifying their technical skills to stay in the development game for the long-haul. Here's my story: I've got a degree in economics, an MA in Political Science and an MBA in Finance and Management. In addition, I've done coursework in advanced math and software development (although no degree in math or software). All-in-all, I've got 13 years of post-secondary education under my belt. I, however, currently work as a software developer using C# for desktop, Silverlight, Flex and javascript for web, and objective c for mobile. I've been in software development for the past 3.3 years, and it seems like it comes pretty easy to me. I work in a field called "geospatial information systems," which just involves customization and manipulation of geospatial data. Right now I am looking at one of several certifications. Given this background, which of these certifications has the highest ceiling? CFA PMP various development/technological certifications from Microsoft, etc. Other? My academic and work experience are all heavy on the analytical/development side, esp. so given the MBA and the B.S. in Econ. The political science degree was really a lot of stats. So it seems that I would be good pursuing more of the CFA/analytical role. This is a difficult path, however, because I have no work experience in the financial sector, and the developers in finance are all "quants," which again, I am OK with, but I haven't done much statistical modeling in the past 3.3 years. The PMP would require knowledge of best practices as it pertains explicitly to software development. I also don't enjoy a lot of business travel, a common theme for most PMP jobs I've seen. If certifications is the route, which would you recommend? Anything else? I've thought about going back to try to knock out a B.S. in C.S., but I wasn't sure how long that would take, or what would be involved. Thoughts or recommendations? Thanks in advance! I turn 32 this weekend, which is what has forced me to think about these issues.

• Importance of certifications for Java programmer without BS degree?

  I've read some posts here and other places about how a lot of people don't put much value in certifications but I am beginning to think it may be necessary for me at this point to be able to move to a bigger company, etc. I currently work as a Java programmer with a startup and worked with a small company before that. Now that I'm applying with larger companies the hr people / recruiters have been asking a lot about certifications and some have directly suggested that someone in my position should probably get a few (they were trying to be helpful) since I haven't completed a BS degree yet (I bounced around a bit in college and ended up not finishing but have enough units to finish eventually, just its not something I can do nearly as easily as getting certifications). Anyways, just curious about what people think for someone in my situation where I do have an interested in working for large companies and do not currently have a BS degree (but do have experience already in the field). Any advice on which certifications beyond the SCJP would be appreciated as well

  I hire a lot of programmers for tiny tasks. I very clearly specify that the tasks can only be completed by making a pull request on GitHub. Unfortunatelly, so many programmers do not know Git and often the programmers cannot complete the project due to not understanding/being willing to learn Git, even after they have undertaken the programming of the task. This is bad both for me and for the programmers. Sometimes I end up arguing for why it is inefficient that they just send me a zip file containing the code. Therefore, I am looking for an online service to certify that the programmers know how to make a pull request so I do not waste their nor my time. The certificate should be free for the coders, but may cost me. It is important that the course just focuses on exactly what is needed to make a clean pull request so it should not take more than 5 minutes to go through. Does such a thing exist?

Given that I have no commercial experience to speak of -- and no undergraduate degree -- how can I best demonstrate my programming ability in order to interview for a job? How valuable are the various software certifications? Should I get the OCA? Should I submit samples of my code? Are there some other skills that I should develop? (I picked up Python and Java fairly quickly--a matter of weeks, actually.) I am a undergrad working on a triple major in math, stat and econ. • Where to find information about ubuntu compatible or certified hardware/PC models

  I am buying a new desktop PC in early 2013, anyway this question should apply to someone intending to buy a new laptop/ultrabook as well. This machine is not meant for gaming, and if I ocasionally do it, I can survive with minimum graphics. However I may need some heavy multimedia edition or multitasking at times, so basically my greatest priority is a good processor, after that perhaps average graphic card (if onboards are not enough, I am still not informed enough about that), at least 4GB of RAM with possibility of expansion. I know there are some PC models specially designed to ship with Ubuntu, which is the OS I use the most these days. However, most people around me use Windows and some software with unsupported versions for Linux and not having a Windows license becomes a bit problematic. Given that, I would like to find information about which PC models or even manufacters currently on the market have the best compatibility with Ubuntu, I am still undecided between building my own desktop or buying a pre-made model, so I would like to find information both for certified models and certified hardware or even Ubuntu partners that may work closely with Canonical. Where to find this information in order to make sure that I will have a good experience with Ubuntu on my new PC in the years to come?
