  • Is there such a thing as a C# style extension method in C++ ?

    I'm currently learning C++ and i run into the simple problem of converting an int to a string. I've worked around it using: string IntToString(int Number) { stringstream Stream; Stream << Number; return Stream.str(); } but though it would be more elegant to use something like: int x = 5; string y = x.toString(); but how do i add the toString() method to a built in type? or am i missing something totally fundamental?

  • Ping remote server and wait to get data

    Hi I'm building my first application for android and I've reached a point where I can't find a solution even have no idea what to search for in Google. So the problem: I am pinging a remote server with GET request through the application passing some parameters like file_id. Then the server gives back confirmation if the file exists or error otherwise, both in plain text. The error string is $$$ERROR$$$. Actually the confirmation is JSON string that holds the path to the file. If the file doesn't exists on the server it generated the error message and start downloading the file and processing it which normally takes 10-30 seconds. What would be the best way to check if the file is ready for download? I have DownloadFile class that extends AsyncTask but before I reach the point to download the file I need the URL which is dependant on the previous request which is in the main class in the UI thread.     This is a piece of my code, it is called every second, after about 10 seconds the values start to become weird (see below): double a; double b; for (int i = 0; i < currAC.Length; i++ ) { a = currAC[i]; b = aveACValues[i]; divisor = (a/b); Console.WriteLine("a = " + a.ToString("N2") + "\t" + "b = " + b.ToString("N2")); Console.WriteLine("divisor = " + divisor); Console.WriteLine("a+b = " + (a+b)); } and the output: a = -0.05 b = 0.00 divisor = 41 a+b = -0.0524010372273268 currAC and aveACValues are double[] what on earth is going on???? The addition result is correct every time, but the division value is wrong, yet it is reading a and b correctly?? EDIT: '41' is the value of the first calculation, ie when a = currAC[0], but this should not remain???

    I have a list box that displays information off of a column of a dataset. I would like the number of rows displayed to be all the rows that are in the dataset (the number of datasets in the rows vary). I'm figuring it has something to do with ListBox.Rows = Dataset.Tables[0].Rows.Count; But it seems to just always default to 4 even when it is only 2.     Let's say I have two char variables, and later on I want to concatenate them into a string. This is how I would do it: char c1, c2; // ... String s = "" + c1 + c2; I've seen people who say that the "" + "trick" is "ugly", etc, and that you should use String.valueOf or Character.toString instead. I prefer this construct because: I prefer using language feature instead of API call if possible In general, isn't the language usually more stable than the API? If language feature only hides API call, then even stronger reason to prefer it! More abstract! Hiding is good! I like that the c1 and c2 are visually on the same level String.valueOf(c1) + c2 suggests something is special about c1 It's shorter. Is there really a good argument why String.valueOf or Character.toString is preferrable to "" +?     In the process of doing some reflection on Java types, I came across an oddity that I do not understand. Inspecting int for its modifiers returns public, abstract, and final. I understand public and final, but the presence of abstract on a primitive type is non-obvious to me. Why is this the case? I just accept primitive types, string, DateTime, Guid, and Nullable(since I append types together, I can distinguish who is int and who is int?), because I can convert all to string without lost values or precision.(for float and double a use ToString("R"), to DateTime ToString("O")).
