  • .net- open excel file, format the file and save

    I have an ASP web service that uses the Crystal Reports API to download an Excel report. Now, there is a few things I do not like about the Excel report that Crystal generates: - The column widths are static (as in they are not adjusted for the content). - I can't format the header row to be bold - If I suppress a data column in the report, it comes out in the Excel spreadsheet as a blank column. I currently use PHP to open the excel file, autosize the columns, bold the heading and remove blank columns, although using the PHPExcel class for this doesn't work well when the spreadsheet is only a few 100kb in size. I am thinking if I move this activity into the .NET web service, the performance will be much better. Does anyone know an efficient way of opening a Excel file and performing the operations listed above?

  • Forms&Reports upgrade characterset issues

    Hello,This quick post is based on my findings during recent IMC workshops, especially those related to upgrading the Forms 6i/9i/10g applications to Forms 11g platform. The upgrade process itself is pretty straightforward and it basically requires recompiling your Forms application with a latest version of frmcmp tool. For some cases though, especially when you migrate from Forms 6i which is a client-server architecture to a 3-tier web solution (Forms 11g), you need to rewrite some parts of your code to make it run on new platform. The things you need to change range from reimplementing (using webutil library) typical client-site functionality like local IO operation, access to WinAPI, invoking DLLs etc. to changing deprecated or obsolete APIs like RUN_PRODUCT to RUN_REPORT_OBJECT. To automate those changes Oracle provides complete Java API  which allows you to manipulate the code and structure of you modules (JDAPI). To make it even easier we can use Forms Migration Assistant tool (written in Java using JDAPI) which is able to replace all occurrences of old API entries with their 11g equivalents or warn you when the replacement is not possible. You can also add your own replacement definitions in the search_replace.properties file. But you need to be aware of some issues that can be encountered using this tool. First of all if you are using some hard-coded text inside your triggers you may notice that after processing them by the Migration Assistant tool the national characters may be lost. This is due to the fact that you need to explicitly tell Java application (which MA really is) what kind of characterset it should use to read those text properly. In order to do that just add to a script calling MA the following line:  export JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Dfile.encoding=<JAVA_ISO_ENCODING>  when the particular encoding must match the NLS_LANG in your Forms Builder environment (for example for Polish characterset you need to use ISO-8859-2).Second issue you can encounter related to national charactersets is lack of national symbols in you reports after migration. This can be solved by adding appropriate NLS_LANG entry in your reports environment. Sometimes instead of particular characterset you see "Greek characters" in your reports. This is just default font used by reports engine instead of the one defined in your report. To solve it you must copy fonts definitions from your old environment (e.g. Forms 10g installation) to appropriate directory in new installation (usually AFM folder).   • Jasper Reports: How can i have multiple growing subreports in a report?

    Hi, My Requirement is to show two sub reports in a Report. What I am doing is, I have created two sub-reports and put that into a report. But the issue is that, both the sub reports are growing (i.e. their height is not static as the number of records are variable).   • Repackaging Jasper-Reports into an application specific OSGi bundle, legal or not?

    Hi, I wanted to ask (probably a silly) question regarding the packaging of existing open-source components as OSGi bundles (more specifically Jasper Reports). I have an application that I am converting from a monolithic jar-hell type architecture to something more moduler and OSGi is my weapon of choice. There are various modules I have in mind but one of the modules is a reporting module. My own reporting module will be a jar file containing my code that should reference a Jasper Reports bundle. Trouble is, Jasper reports depends on far far too many libraries and is quite monolithic in its own right. I therefore wish to build my own Jasper Reports bundle but this is where I start getting confused about the legality of repackaging. I don't plan to re-compile but I do plan to re-bundle removing known items that I do not require. Can anyone offer advice on whether I am permitted to repackage (not recompile or extend) open-source libraries into OSGi bundles without falling foul of 'derivative works' clause of LGPL? I noticed that Groovy seems to offer some monolithic jars that include all dependancies and actually goes so far as to re-arrange the packages of its dependancies so that there are no namespace conflicts. This seems to me to be a violation of the license but if anyone can reassure me that this is legal then I would feel safer about my less intrusive custom-bundling of Jasper reports.   • Crystal Reports Programmatic Image Resizing... Scale?

    I'm working with a Crystal Reports object in Visual Studio 2008 (C#). The report is building fine and the data is binding correctly. However, when I try to resize an IBlobFieldObject from within the source, the scale is getting skewed. Two notes about this scenario. Source image is 1024x768, my max width and height are 720x576. My math should be correct that my new image size will be 720x540 (to fit within the max width and height guidelines). The ratio is wrong when I do this though: img = Image.FromFile(path); newWidth = img.Size.Width; newHeight = img.Size.Height; if ((img.Size.Width > 720) || (img.Size.Height > 576)) { double ratio = Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Width) / Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Height); if (ratio > 1.25) // Adjust width to 720, height will fall within range { newWidth = 720; newHeight = Convert.ToInt32(Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Height) * 720.0 / Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Width)); } else // Adjust height to 576, width will fall within range { newHeight = 576; newWidth = Convert.ToInt32(Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Width) * 576.0 / Convert.ToDouble(img.Size.Height)); } imgRpt.Section3.ReportObjects["image"].Height = newHeight; imgRpt.Section3.ReportObjects["image"].Width = newWidth; } I've stepped through the code to make sure that the values are correct from the math, and I've even saved the image file out to make sure that the aspect ratio is correct (it was). No matter what I try though, the image is squashed--almost as if the Scale values are off in the Crystal Reports designer (they're not). Thanks in advance for any help!

    I'm using visual studio 2005 to develop a form with a combobox passing a value into the parameter of an embedded crystal report.   • Crystal Reports API - chart: "for all records" or "for each record"?

    Is there any way to determine whether a chart in Crystal Reports 2008 (using either the RAS SDK or the older RDC API) is set to display values "for each record" or "for all records"? I can get access to a CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel.ChartObject but can't find any API there to access which type of chart it is - "for each" or "for all".

  • Using C# with Crystal Reports, How Can I Create 4-Up Subreports?

    The simplest example that I can provide for what I want to do is this: I need to create a Report, whose only requirement is that I have (4) of the same subreport on the page (imagine 4 portrait-oriented post cards on a page), each quadrant using a separate row from my datatable, yet all 4 are identical in terms of fields. If there are more than 4, it needs to carry over to a new page with the same format. I'm using C# and the built-in Crystal Reports Basic for the task.

  • Is there a way to sort by more than one field in Crystal Reports?

    I'm using Crystal Report with VB.NET in Visual Studio 2005. I have report that works if I pass in a list of List(Of Stuff). I had been sorting the report by one of the members of Stuff but a need now to sort first by one member, like Stuff.StatusCode and then by another member, like Stuff.ItemNumber. Can I do this just be having more than one SortField member, or do I need to do it some other way? Thanks as always!

    I am using VS2010, CrystalReport13 & MVC3. My problem is unable to add an external assembly in Crystal Report using "Database Expert" Option. I have a class named WeeklyReportModel in an external assembly. In my web project, data retrieving from DB as IEnumerable collection of WeeklyReportModel. I tried ProjectData - .NetObjects in Crystal Report for adding the WeeklyReportModel. But this external assembly is not showing under ".NetObjects". Then I tried other option as Create New Connection - ADO.Net – Make New Connection and pointed this External Assembly. It has been added under Ado.Net node, but while expanding displays as "...no items found..." Totally frustrated. Please help.   • combobox intem does not show in crystal report [migrated]

    I am creating a simple printing application using crstal reports, C# and visual studio 2010. On my winform I have some textboxes, comboboxes. Comboboxes are using data for fill from the XML file. On my report I created some parameters and linked with the selection of comboboxes. When I use: cryRpt.SetParameterValue("PAR3", cmbSome.SelectedIndex); on my report I see the 0 or 1 depending my item selection. Now I want to display, not the index but the value ie: Monday. If I use selectedItem, selectedText or selectedValue i do not see anything on my report. To see what happend i put another textbox on my form and linked it with the combobox selection as: txtProe.Text = Convert.ToString(cmbSome.SelectedItem); or txtProe.Text = cmbSome.Text; In both case when I click the button I see that my selection from cmbSome is passed to it. Does anyone knows what happens here ??!

  • Methods to Manage/Document "one-off" Reports

    I'm a programmer that also does database stuff and I get a lot of so-called one-time report requests and recurring report requests. I work at a company that has a SQL Server database that we integrate third-party data with and we also have some third-party vendors that we have to use their proprietary reporting system to extract data in flat file format from that we don't integrate into SQL Server for security reasons. To generate many of these reports I have to query data from various systems, write small scripts to combine data from the separate systems, cry, pull my hair, curse the last guy's name that made the report before me, etc. My question is, what are some good methods for documenting the steps taken to generate these reports so the next poor soul that has to do them won't curse my name? As of now I just have a folder with subfolders per project with the selects and scripts that generated the last report but that seems like a "poor man's" solution. :)
