• Who should own exim4 under debian?

  Installed debian from DVD. And now I see exim4 is running owned by UID 107. There is no user 107 in my /etc/passwd. Same problem on another system (owned by UID 101), so I suspect this is a debian problem...? Running squeeze on both. So under debian, who should own the mail system? This is what I have installed: # dpkg -l | grep exim ii exim4 4.72-6+squeeze2 metapackage to ease Exim MTA (v4) installation ii exim4-base 4.72-6+squeeze2 support files for all Exim MTA (v4) packages ii exim4-config 4.72-6+squeeze2 configuration for the Exim MTA (v4) ii exim4-daemon-light 4.72-6+squeeze2 lightweight Exim MTA (v4) daemon The binary itself is owned by root: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 758852 May 12 2011 /usr/sbin/exim4

• Samba smbtree No output; failed to retrieve share list

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 on two machines, one laptop & one desktop. Faced the same problem when I used 12.04. When I try connecting to the other machine using 'Connect to Server', I give the correct user & workgroup details, but the system displays 'failed to retrieve server list' I've tried editing /etc/samba/smb.conf file to: name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast I also added the other machine to /etc/hosts But, nothing worked. The output of smbtree is naveen@tomkat:~$ smbtree Enter naveen's password: naveen@tomkat:~$ Used sources to solve problem myself: "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error when browsing a share with Nautilus http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1114038 All help will be appreciated. Thanks. UPDATE: After 'purging' samba and all its components (incl all config files), and reinstall, sharing workes in one direction (from Laptop to Desktop) but when I attempt to use the Desktop as server, same problem is still faced. • #TechEd 2010

  It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. I can not wait to see you all again next year in Atlanta!!! • I finished my #TechEd 2010, may I have another??

• dist-upgrade runs and completes but current kernel stays the same

  I think that my system is staying at an older kernel version. It seems to update when I run dist-upgrade but the current kernel version doesn't change. • dpkg reporting as installed, uninstalled kernels

  I have run the following command to remove old kernels: dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge and only the current kernel is now installed, which I have confirmed in synaptic and by checking my boot partition. • Creating Entity as an aggregation

  I recently asked about how to separate entities from their behaviour and the main answer linked to this article: http://cowboyprogramming.com/2007/01/05/evolve-your-heirachy/ The ultimate concept written about here is that of: OBJECT AS A PURE AGGREGATION. I'm wondering how I might go about creating game entities as pure aggregation using C#. I've not quite grasped the concept of how this might work yet. (Perhaps the entity is an array of objects implementing a certain interface or base type?) My current thinking still involves having a concrete class for each entity type that then implements the relevant interfaces (IMoveable, ICollectable, ISpeakable etc). How can I go about creating an entity purely as an aggregation without having any concrete type for that entity?

To counter that, I implemented the ability to turn tracing of the design patterns on. It is not DI and accomplishes things that DI cannot. I wouldn't call the code boilerplate but I would call it bloated. In summary, the weaknesses are bloated code and a learning curve in exchange for aspect oriented functionality. Beyond the normal fear of something new and different, what are other weakness in this implementation of aspect oriented design, if any? I've tried to load it on XNA and traslate the camera for 15 units, but I can seem to find the values needed to see the box properly.   Hi everyone, I'm having a go at creating a very simple text based game and am wondering what the standard design patterns are when it comes to entities (characters, sentient scenery) and the actions those entities can perform. As an example, I have entity that is a 'person' with various properties such as age, gender, height, etc. This 'person' can also perform some actions such as speaking, walking, jumping, flying, etc etc. How would you seperate out the entity from the actions it can perform and what are some common design patterns that solve this kind of problem?

• Creating the concept of Time

  So I've reached the point in my exploration of gaming where I'd like to impliment the concept of time into my little demo I've been building. What are some common methodologies for creating the concept of time passing within a game? My thoughts so far: My game loop tendes to spend a fair bit of time sitting around waiting or user input so any time system will likely need to be run in a seperate thread. What I've currently done is create a BackgroundWorker passing in a method that contains a loop triggering every second. This is working fine and I can output information to the console from here etc. Inside this loop I have a DateTime object that is incrimented by 1 minute for every realtime second. (the game begins in the year 01/01/01) Is this a standard way of acheiving this result or are there more tried and tested methods? I'm also curious about how to go about performing time based actions (reducing player energy, moving entities around the game board, life/death etc). Thanks for any pointers or advice. I've searched around however I'm not familiar enough with the terms and so my searches are yeilding little result on this one.

• 12.04 - Connecting Acer X203H monitor to new Dell XPS 15z laptop

  I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu (12.04) on my boyfriend's new Dell XPS 15z laptop. He uses a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, and an Acer X203H monitor with his set-up. No problems with the keyboard or mouse, or with connecting the HP printer, but we just can't get the laptop to talk to the Acer monitor. With his old setup he used a VGA cable to connect machine & monitor. New laptop has no VGA port, but we've bought a VGA to HDMI adaptor to connect to the laptop. Have tried using Fn F2 to change the display from laptop to monitor, but it doesn't see the monitor at all. HELP! Is there a driver I can install from somewhere? Or how can I tell Ubuntu to look for the monitor on another port? Completely in the dark, and about to get in trouble!! Thanks

• Networking disabled

  Both the Wifi and the ethernet connection to the internet are not working. All had been functioning fine until the Ubuntu suspended itself. On re-starting, the connection to internet failed to function and now I get the message "Network Disabled" whenever I re-boot. nm-tool tells me the state is "asleep". Stopping and starting the NetworkManager has no effect The machine is an Inspiron 9300 and work perfectly with Windows. How do I wake the networking up? Thanks

• Ubuntu server 13 hangs on boot

  I formatted my WD30EFRX 3TB SATA HDD as GPT with the following layout: 200 MB FAT32 (BOOTABLE) 50GB EXT4 (Mount point: /) 4 GB SWAP SPACE ~2.9 TB EXT4 (with no mount point) Then i created a Flash USB using Rufus 1.3.3 and the following ISO-image: ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64.iso. I used following configuration to create the USB: GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer FAT32 (16KB) I successfully booted from this USB on my Intel D510MO motherboard in UEFI mode (there were a black and white boot loader menu instead of a colorful GUI) and installed the OS. During the boot loader installation i saw it was grub-efi-amd64 as it must be. After installation i removed the flash drive and tried to boot the system, but just after a BIOS POST it hangs (there is a white blinking cursor at the left top corner of the black screen) and nothing happens. UEFI Mode is enabled in the BIOS configuration and i've updated the BIOS to the latest firmware. What went wrong, how i can confirm that system was installed properly? How can i boot the OS?

• Revert F3 and F4 behavior in byobu?

  With a fresh 12.04 installation of Ubuntu, byobu's interpretation of the function keys seems to have changed. F3 and F4 will still change the active tab on the current session, but it changes it for all connections. Previously, if you have two active connections to the same user (same session) with User 1 on shell 0/tab 0 and User 2 on shell 0/tab 0, when User 2 pressed F3 , they would be changed to tab 1 while User 1 would remain on tab 0. With the latest version in 12.04, when User 2 presses F3, all connected users are moved to shell 1/tab 1. Is there any way to re-enable the old behavior? I have looked at the /etc/byobu directory and only found backend and socketdir files there. Toggling backend between tmux and screen did not seem to render any difference. Anyone know what, if any, configuration option exist to control this?

• XUbuntu won't boot

  I can't properly boot my XUbuntu desktop. It just hangs on the console without any visible errors. The only way i can boot it properly is choosing "recovery mode" in GRUB and then selecting "continue booting" in recovery menu. It's really annoying. • XUbuntu 12.04 sound becomes distorted on ASUS-computers

  On my XUbuntu 12.04 Desktop from time to time audio becomes distorted, not the audio from some specific applications but every possible sounds are very noisy and barely recognizable. Then i go to: Applications Menu Multimedia PulseAudio Volume Control "Configuration"-tab and change Built-in Audio's Profile from my current profile to something else. After that audio becomes normal, until it breaks again and i have to repeat these steps. It's happening on two different computers: one is an ASUS-based Desktop and other is ASUS notebook. Maybe it's related to some common motherboard audio components. Motherboard is: ASUS P8P67 EVO REV 3.0 Netbook is: ASUS EEPC VX6 Any help will be much appreciated = )

• How to install MySQL 5.6?

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 (amd64), and want to install a recent version of MySQL 5.6. If possible, I would like to install (not upgrade) it the "Debian Way' (i.e., using apt-get or dpkg). The only binaries I could find are here. Unfortunately, they are incomplete, as they only install files in /usr/share. If binaries aren't available, how could I install it from source, using the standard Debian method of installing from source. Thanks for any assistance.
