After 2002, we received lots of requests from the marketing partners. Currently, the application has lots of spaghetti code with lots of Ifs and elses. One class has more than 20,000 lines of code with a huge body of functions without abstraction. Now, we need to support billions of records, what we need to do immediately and gradually?     Hi, I am new to glassfish server. i have a question on glassfish usage: can I just use glassfish like a tomcat server without needing an installation? where in, I just take a folder containing glassfish folders, jars etc... dump it in a folder location setup a few environment variables and it runs.. just like tomcat? is it possible with glassfish? also does glassfish installation does any other background things like creating registry entries etc other than creating the glassfish folder structure? My experience as a Lead Developer / Architect is totally with .NET projects. I want to get ramped up on WebLogic/JEE, so I can contribute to future projects. I searched and found that the format attribute is used to print the desired result but was unsuccessful. What should I pass as the value in format to print 3 digit integers/floating point numbers.   • Java Architecture Decision !!

    Hi everybody! I'm developing a medium Java app, and i'm facing a small problem due to my lack of expirience. I've a custom DAO, which gets "Article" objects from the DataBase. I've the Article class, and the DAO has a method called getArticle(int id), this method returns an Article. The Article has a Category object, and i'm using lazy loading. So, when i request for an Article Category (Article a = new Article(); a.getCategory();) the Article class gets the Category from the DAO and then returns it. I'm now thinking to cache it, so when i request multiple times to an Article's category, the database is only queried one time. My question is: where should i put that cache? I can put it on the Article class (in the DTO), or i can put it on the DAO class. What do you say? Thanks!

  • How To Configure Query Cacheing in EclipseLink

    I have a collection of states, that I want to cache for the life of the application, preferably after it is called for the first time. I'm using EclipseLink as my persistence provider. In my EJB3 entity I have the following code: @Cache @NamedQueries({ @NamedQuery( name = "State.findAll", query = "SELECT s FROM State s", hints = { @QueryHint(name=QueryHints.CACHE_USAGE, value=CacheUsage.CheckCacheThenDatabase), @QueryHint(name=QueryHints.READ_ONLY, value=HintValues.TRUE) } ) }) This doesn't seem to do anything though, if I monitor the SQL queries going to MySQL it still does a select each time my Session Bean uses this NamedQuery. What is the correct way to configure this query so that it is only ever read once from the database, preferably across all sessions? Edit: I am calling the query like this: Query query = em.createNamedQuery("State.findAll"); List<State> states = query.getResultList();

  • How to debug JBoss out of memory problem?

    Hello, I am trying to debug a JBoss out of memory problem. When JBoss starts up and runs for a while, it seems to use memory as intended by the startup configuration. However, it seems that when some unknown user action is taken (or the log file grows to a certain size) using the sole web application JBoss is serving up, memory increases dramatically and JBoss freezes. When JBoss freezes, it is difficult to kill the process or do anything because of low memory. When the process is finally killed via a -9 argument and the server is restarted, the log file is very small and only contains outputs from the startup of the newly started process and not any information on why the memory increased so much. This is why it is so hard to debug: server.log does not have information from the killed process. The log is set to grow to 2 GB and the log file for the new process is only about 300 Kb though it grows properly during normal memory circumstances. This is information on the JBoss configuration: JBoss (MX MicroKernel) 4.0.3 JDK 1.6.0 update 22 PermSize=512m MaxPermSize=512m Xms=1024m Xmx=6144m This is basic info on the system: Operating system: CentOS Linux 5.5 Kernel and CPU: Linux 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 on x86_64 Processor information: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz, 8 cores This is good example information on the system during normal pre-freeze conditions a few minutes after the jboss service startup: Running processes: 183 CPU load averages: 0.16 (1 min) 0.06 (5 mins) 0.09 (15 mins) CPU usage: 0% user, 0% kernel, 1% IO, 99% idle Real memory: 17.38 GB total, 2.46 GB used Virtual memory: 19.59 GB total, 0 bytes used Local disk space: 113.37 GB total, 11.89 GB used When JBoss freezes, system information looks like this: Running processes: 225 CPU load averages: 4.66 (1 min) 1.84 (5 mins) 0.93 (15 mins) CPU usage: 0% user, 12% kernel, 73% IO, 15% idle Real memory: 17.38 GB total, 17.18 GB used Virtual memory: 19.59 GB total, 706.29 MB used Local disk space: 113.37 GB total, 11.89 GB used

    I was always sure (don't know why) that it's better to add annotations to variables, but while browsing the Hibernate doc http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/stable/annotations/reference/en/html_single/#entity-hibspec-collection I noticed they tend to annotate the methods. So should I put my annotations before methods, like this: @Entity public class Flight implements Serializable { private long id; @Id @GeneratedValue public long getId() { return id; } public void setId(long id) { this.id = id; } } Or is it better to do it like this: @Entity public class Flight implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue private long id; public long getId() { return id; } public void setId(long id) { this.id = id; } } Or maybe there's no difference?

  • How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

    With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

  • Accessing the next 3 element values in a Map knowing the key.

    I have java.util.LinkedHashMap with Integer as Key and Character as Value. I know the key of the element i want to access. In addition to the element value for the key, i also want to retrieve the next 3 element values so that i can append all the 4 element values and form a string with 4 chars. I am asking for something like how we will do in a java.util.List. Is this feasible by any means in a Map/ordered map? Please suggest any other data structure that can help me achieve this. I am using Java 6.

    Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to?   • Basic Hibernate question using and sql query

    Hello Sorry if this is basic but I cannot find the solution anywhere. I have an java Object ‘Person’ with 3 properties firstname,lastname and username. I have an Oracle Store procedure returning a Resultset with the 3 column. All works fine for that. Now I have another StoreProcedure that will only return firstname and lastname but not username. I get the following error : « could not read column value from result set username. » Hibernate tries to fetch the username property from the resultset. If I remove the property username, then it works. Do I have to Create a Special Pojo for Each type of resultset or can I tell Hibernate what to map for each result set? Please help.

  • Can it be important to call remove() on an EJB 3 stateless session bean? Perhaps on weblogic?

    I'm in the process of migrating an EJB 2 application to EJB 3 (and what a satisfying task it is to delete all those deployment descriptors!). It used to run on Weblogic and now runs on Glassfish. The task is going very smoothly, but one thing makes me wary: The current code takes great care to ensure that EJBObject.remove() is called on the bean when it's done its job, and other developers have (unfortunately very vague) memories of "bad things" happening when that was not done. However, with EJB3, the implementation class does not implement EJBObject, so there is no remove() method to be called. And my understanding is that there isn't really any point at all in calling it on stateless session beans, since they are, well, stateless. Could these "bad things" have been weblogic-specific? If not, what else? Should I avoid the full EJB3 lightweightness and keep a remote interface that extends EJBObject? Or just write it off as cargo-cult programming and delete all those try/finally clauses? I'm leaning towards the latter, but now feeling very comfortable with it.
