• Licensing a JavaScript library

  I am developing a free, open-source (duh) JavaScript library, and wondering how to license it. I was considering the GNU GPL, but I heard that I must distribute the license with the software, and I'm not sure anymore. I would like the library to be available much like jQuery: In a free, downloadable script, preferably in either original or minified form. Am I mistaken about the GNU GPL license terms? jQuery is dual licensed under GNU GPL or MIT licenses. How does the GPL apply to single script files like that? Can I license my library with nothing more than a few sentences in the script file? Is there another license that better suits my needs? What would be nice is a license that allows you to put the URL in the source, for people to read if they want. I don't know that many do, unless I am mistaken. I am generally looking to release the library as free software like the GPL specifies, but don't want to have to force licensees to download the full license unless they wish to read it.

• One eye on my dinner and one eye on SQL server

  LiveJournal Tags: RedGate,Work Life Balance,Tips and Tricks,SQL Server This is somewhere between a Tweet and a proper blog article - would that be a Bleet? Anyway, I was at a local restaurant yesterday and after placing my order I was thinking about having to get home and log in to check some SQL Servers and then the thought came to me that as we were near civilisation there was likely to be a 3G signal that might actually make using the web browser on my phone bearable. It was surprisingly fast on my HTC Desire, it was almost as good as Wi-Fi. RedGate SQL Monitor works fine on the default HTC browser and here is the proof, me checking the servers while I am waiting for the meal to arrive. • OpenSource License Validation [closed]

  I'm basically looking for some kind of FLOSS/OpenSource license validation service. I have special needs for some projects I'd like to open-source. I know there's actually tons of different FLOSS/OpenSource licenses, each one suitable for some specific purpose, and that creating a «new» one is not something recommended, usually. Anyway, even if I'm not an expert in the legal domain, I've got some experience with FLOSS/OpenSource, at a legal level, and it seems there's just no license covering my needs. I actually wrote the license terms I'd like to use, and contacted the FSF, asking them to review that license, as it seems (at least that's written on their website) they can do such review work. No answer. I tried repetitively, but no luck. So I'm currently looking for an alternate legal expertise about that specific license. I don't mind paying such a service, as long as I can be sure the license can be recognised as a FLOSS/OpenSource license. About the license, it's basically a mix of a BSD (third-clause) with a BOOST software license. The difference is about redistribution. Source code redistribution shall retain the copyright novices. The same applies for binary redistribution (like BSD), unless it's distributed as a library (more like BOOST). I hope this question is OK for programmers.stackexchange. I'm usually more active on StackOverflow, but it just seems the right place for such a question. So thank you for your time and enlightened advices. : )

• Cost to licence characters or ships for a game

  I am producing a game pitch document for a university game design class, and I am looking for examples of licencing cost for using characters or ships from other IP holders in a game. For example: cost of using an X-Wing in a game, licencing from Lucas cost of using the Enterprise in a game, licencing from Paramount cost of using the Space Shuttle (if any), licencing from Nasa EDIT The closest information I can find is from an article about Nights of the Old Republic, but isn't nearly specific enough for my needs: What Kotick means by Lucas being the principal beneficiary of the success of The Old Republic is that there are most likely clauses in the license agreement that give percentages, points, or another denomination of revenue out to Lucas and his people just for the Star Wars name, and that amount is presumed to be a great deal of money. Kotick is saying that because the cost of the license is so prohibitive, as he has personally had experience with in his position as CEO of Activision Blizzard, that EA will not be able to be profitable because of the hemorrhaging of money to the licensor. EDIT 2 Another vague source stating that FOX uses a "five-figure rule" (assuming between $10,000 - $99,000) It seems FOX, like most studios, will not license individuals to create new works based upon their products. They will only commission individuals of their choosing if they elect to branch out into expanded product lines related to those licenses. Alternately, they are open to making the licencing available to large corporations with access to global markets, but only if those corporations agree to what Ms Friedman called a "five-figure guarantee". Presumably this means that the corporation seeking the licensing must agree to pay a 5-figure sum for that license, and be confident that their product will sell enough volume to recoup that fee, and to produce sufficient profits to make the acquisition worth their while. • Windows 2008 R2 DS in 2003 domain?

  Hi, Having a master domain controller running Windows 2003, and now I'd like to set up a new domain controller on a branch office. I really only have access to licenses for Windows 2008 R2 (through licensing.microsoft.com), so question is if a newly installed Windows 2008 Standard R2 can become a domain controller in the existing (2003) domain? First I tried adprep /forestprep on the newly installed 2008, but it complained about not being a domain controller. I then tried dcpromo, but it too complained about it. According to MS documentation, it seems I have to run 'adprep /forestprep' on the master domain controller, and adprep is located in 2008 installation DVD. Am I on the right track? Is the correct way to mount the 2008 installation dvd into the existing 2003 master controller, and run 'adprep /forestprep' on it there? Will I be able to run dcpromo on the 2008 once that has been completed? Thanks,

• How compatible are VMWare and VirtualBox?

  At my workplace, everyone uses VMware Player (and some people have licenses for Workstation). We frequently share VMs to save time on development setup. However, I would really like to take advantage of the Snapshot feature in VirtualBox since I am unable to acquire a license for Workstation. I have read that VirtualBox has no issues reading VMWare VMs (including VMs with snapshots). However, I'm worried about how compatible things are the other way. In VirtualBox, I open up a VM created in VMware and create multiple snapshots. Can the resulting files be opened in VMware?

  Dawsons needed to upgrade their existing Windows Forms LAN human resources system to allow better and flexible access to the ever increasing data size as labor hire clients are demanding easy access to copies of tickets and licenses and etc. The company has some 30,000 applicants on file, but access to this data has been complex and limited with the current system. • Advantage of using nexenta vs. OpenSolaris

  I am currently building a NAS for about 24 TB of storage. Video files, slow access, long term storage. No performance issues. I am currently undecided between buying a JBOD case and installing OpenSolaris (because of ZFS), or purchasing a Nexenta license. The difference is about $ 12.500 for licenses over three years. What would you see as the main advantage in purchasing a nexenta license, beside the support? Did nexenta really enhance the basic OpenSolaris, or is it just a lot of marketing speak? No one really wanted to answer that question.

• Windows 7 Activation: Can I use OEM key for retail version? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Windows 7 and Vista Activation FAQ: How do language, version, 64-bit or 32-bit, and source affect ability to install and transfer Windows licenses? I have a Lenovo notebook with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional x64. I just did a clean reinstall with retail installation Win7 Professional x64 disk I got from MSDNAA programme I'm member. I wanted to install the OS as Lenovo OEM with the same key I had before, but when I tried to activate the newly installed Windows, it gave me 0xc004e003 error. So the question is, can I use my OEM key for Win7 installed as retail? If not, can I somehow change the installed OS to OEM? The other think is, the OEM key I have tried is just some key I found in my notes, because I don't have any Windows sticker on beneath my laptop as it used to be on all my previous ones. Can I somehow find out "what is the origin" of the supposed key I'm trying to use?

• Can I re-license Academic Free License code under 2-Clause BSD / ITC?

  I want to fork a piece of code licensed under the Academic Free License. For the project, it would be preferable to re-license it under the ISC License or the 2-Clause BSD license, which are equivalent. I understand that the AFL grants me things such as limitation of liability, but licensing consistency is much more important to the project, especially since we're talking about just 800 lines of code, a quarter of which I've modified in some way. And it's very important for me to give these changes back to the community, given the fact that this is software relevant to security - I need the public scrutiny that I'll get by creating a public fork. In short: At the top of the file I want to say this, or something like it: # Licensed under the Academic Free License, version 3 # Copyright (C) 2009 Original Author # Licensed under the ISC License # Copyright (C) 2012 Stefano Palazzo # Copyright (C) 2012 Company Am I allowed to do this? My research so far indicates that it's not clear whether the AFL is GPL-Compatible, and I can't really understand any of the stuff concerning re-licensing to other permissive licenses. As a stop gap, I would also be okay with re-licensing under the GPL, however: I can find no consensus (though I can find disagreement) on whether this is allowed at all, and I don't want to risk it, of course. • What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a hosted firewall?

  Would you rather have your firewall hosted or in house if you've got the skills to manage it? We currently have 6 remote offices and 2 different ISP's, one private network and our firewall (Watchguard, licenses are due to expire) is also our main gateway. I don't see how a hosted firewall (in this case Fortinet) is going to work for us especially when it's cheaper to buy our own firewall and the transition from one ISP to a new provider will take some time because our current contracts aren't due to expire soon.   I'm using an SPI host adapter for a project. The Aardvark from TotalPhase. And I did something crazy, I read that EULA license that everyone just clicks through. The driver installation license includes these bits: This driver installer package also includes a WIN32 driver that is entirely based on the libusb-win32 project (release 0.1.10.1). ... LICENSE: The software in this package is distributed under the following licenses: Driver: GNU General Public License (GPL) Library, Test Files: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) Now, my understanding of of the GPL is that it's sticky and viral. If you include software then the whole project has to be released under the GPL (if you distribute it, you can do whatever you want with in-house projects). If the driver was like the library, and was licensed under the LGPL, it could be used by my closed source proprietary project, as long as it's source and license was passed along with it. But it's not, it's pure GPL. If I include this driver in my project and distribute it, am I required to release my project under the GPL?

• how do I make my Dualshock 3 gamepad work in Ubuntu 14.04?

  When my desktop computer was running Ubuntu 12.04, my PS3 controllers would work with USB. I didn't need to do any special setup. I could just plug it in before I start SuperTuxKart and it would recognize it. I can also do this on my laptop (still running 12.04). Since I gave my desktop a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, the controller would never work. I have played with some installed software that I found when looking for information. I have never tried bluetooth on either computer, but I don't think I even have that on my desktop. So now, how do I make my gamepad work in Ubuntu 14.04?

• Common request: export #Tabular model and data to #PowerPivot

  I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional. • Power User - archive Outlook mail items into SQL Server

  I am looking (and so far not finding any) for a solution to archive e-mail items from my Outlook into SQL Server. My PST is beginning to get really really big, and I'd love to extract my older e-mail into SQL Server in a way so I can still easily find mails if needed. I would prefer SQL Server as the storage medium since I'm familiar with it, and it's rock solid - I don't want to have a collection of PST files or CHM files or anything like that. Does anyone know of such a solution? I'm a power/home user - I can't afford $5'000 enterprise licenses - I need a sub-$100 solution for private use.

• Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

  So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

• How do I trust an off site application

  I need to implement something similar to a license server. This will have to be installed off site at the customers' location and needs to communicate with other applications at the customers' site (the applications that use the licenses) and an application running in our hosting center (for reporting and getting license information). My question is how to set this up in a way I can trust that: The license server is really our application and not something that just simulates it; and There is no "man in the middle" (i.e. a proxy or something that alters the traffic). The first thing I thought of was to use with client certificates and that would solve at least 2. However, what I'm worried about is that someone just decompiles (this is build in .NET) the license server, alters some logic and recompiles it. This would be hard to detect from both connecting applications. This doesn't have to be absolutely secure since we have a limited number of customers whom we have a trust relationship with. However, I do want to make it more difficult than a simple decompile/recompile of the license server. I primarily want to protect against an employee or nephew of the boss trying to be smart.

• Do I need a license to create pdf files? [closed]

  I hope this is the correct place where I could ask this question. My mother is an accountant with a degree in economics. She works as a freelancer and she needs some licenses for her job. The biggest problem is adobe acrobat standard, which costs 400€, quite a lot. I want understand if she must buy it to create pdf files or she can use some free (even for commercial use) programs that she has because of her job (the chamber of commerce provide some advantages to accountants). She is actually using PDFCreator, which as I can read is free for business usage (open source also!!): http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ Thanks for any suggestion

• Do support sites like stackoverflow upset the paid-support open source model?

  In order to stay relevant in the marketplace, I'm researching new business models for my software company. The open source model with paid support seems like a good fit for our product, but I have concerns about whether or not a paid support model is viable in an era where top-notch help is readily available for free on sites like those in the StackExchange network. Case in point -- I moved my employees to Ubuntu last year because I didn't want to pay for Win 7 licenses and new hardware (plus, the mono platform was highly attractive). My staff had no Linux experience, but were able to achieve relative competency in about 120 days with the help of AskUbuntu, StackOverflow, and a few "For Dummies" books. We did employ an Ubuntu consultant for 7 days to provide training and support, but beyond that spent $0.00 on any kind of paid expertise. In regards to my due diligence, I ran a 3 month beta of the freemium-paid-support model with one of our smaller customers, and achieved mediocre results. I'd like to think its because our software is so stable and easy to use that the customer didn't need much paid support, but I suspect that they circumvented the terms of our SLA in the same manner that we did with the move to Ubuntu. Does anyone out there has any thoughts, advice, or experience relevant to the move I'm considering? What worked, what didn't, etc? Thanks in advance!
