• Building vs. Buying a Master Data Management Solution

  Many organizations prefer to build their own MDM solutions. The argument is that they know their data quality issues and their data better than anyone. Plus a focused solution will cost less in the long run then a vendor supplied general purpose product. This is not unreasonable if you think of MDM as a point solution for a particular data quality problem. But this approach carries significant risk. We now know that organizations achieve significant competitive advantages when they deploy MDM as a strategic enterprise wide solution: with the most common best practice being to deploy a tactical MDM solution and grow it into a full information architecture. A build your own approach most certainly will not scale to a larger architecture unless it is done correctly with the larger solution in mind. It is possible to build a home grown point MDM solution in such a way that it will dovetail into broader MDM architectures. A very good place to start is to use the same basic technologies that Oracle uses to build its own MDM solutions. Start with the Oracle 11g database to create a flexible, extensible and open data model to hold the master data and all needed attributes. The Oracle database is the most flexible, highly available and scalable database system on the market. With its Real Application Clusters (RAC) it can even support the mixed OLTP and BI workloads that represent typical MDM data access profiles. Use Oracle Data Integration (ODI) for batch data movement between applications, MDM data stores, and the BI layer. Use Oracle Golden Gate for more real-time data movement. Use Oracle's SOA Suite for application integration with its: BPEL Process Manager to orchestrate MDM connections to business processes; Identity Management for managing users; WS Manager for managing web services; Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition for analytics; and JDeveloper for creating or extending the MDM management application. Oracle utilizes these technologies to build its MDM Hubs.  Customers who build their own MDM solution using these components will easily migrate to Oracle provided MDM solutions when the home grown solution runs out of gas. But, even with a full stack of open flexible MDM technologies, creating a robust MDM application can be a daunting task. For example, a basic MDM solution will need: a set of data access methods that support master data as a service as well as direct real time access as well as batch loads and extracts; a data migration service for initial loads and periodic updates; a metadata management capability for items such as business entity matrixed relationships and hierarchies; a source system management capability to fully cross-reference business objects and to satisfy seemingly conflicting data ownership requirements; a data quality function that can find and eliminate duplicate data while insuring correct data attribute survivorship; a set of data quality functions that can manage structured and unstructured data; a data quality interface to assist with preventing new errors from entering the system even when data entry is outside the MDM application itself; a continuing data cleansing function to keep the data up to date; an internal triggering mechanism to create and deploy change information to all connected systems; a comprehensive role based data security system to control and monitor data access, update rights, and maintain change history; a flexible business rules engine for managing master data processes such as privacy and data movement; a user interface to support casual users and data stewards; a business intelligence structure to support profiling, compliance, and business performance indicators; and an analytical foundation for directly analyzing master data. Oracle's pre-built MDM Hub solutions are full-featured 3-tier Internet applications designed to participate in the full Oracle technology stack or to run independently in other open IT SOA environments. Building MDM solutions from scratch can take years. Oracle's pre-built MDM solutions can bring quality data to the enterprise in a matter of months. But if you must build, at lease build with the world's best technology stack in a way that simplifies the eventual upgrade to Oracle MDM and to the full enterprise wide information architecture that it enables.

• git, how to I go back to origin master after pulling a branch

  This has to be a FAQ, but I can't find it googling. Another person created a branch, commit'd to it, and pushed it to github using git push origin newbranch I successfully pulled it down using git pull origin newbranch Now, I want to go back to the origin master version. Nothing I do seems to cause the files in the origin master to replace those in the newbranch. git checkout master git checkout origin master git pull git pull origin HEAD etc git pull origin master returns: * branch master -> FETCH_HEAD Already up-to-date. This can't be hard, but I sure can't figure it out. 'git branch' returns * master and 'git branch -r' return origin/HEAD origin/experimental origin/master

• How to force remove a package if dpkg removal script fails?

  I'm trying to remove a package where I deleted the /etc/init.d/disco-master file (in an attempt to remove the package manually). I want to remove the disco-master package. How do I do this now? This is what happens when I do sudo apt-get remove disco-master: removing disco-master ... invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/disco-master not found. dpkg: error processing disco-master (--remove): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: disco-master E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I do sudo apt-get install --reinstall disco-master I get the following: You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: disco-master : Depends: disco-node (= 0.4.2+nmu1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). When I do sudo apt-get -f install I get this: Unpacking disco-node (from .../disco-node_0.4.2+nmu1_amd64.deb) ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/disco-node_0.4.2+nmu1_amd64.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/disco/master/ebin/disco.app', which is also in package disco-master 0.4.1 No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (Broken pipe) Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/disco-node_0.4.2+nmu1_amd64.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I run sudo apt-get remove disco-node I get the following: Package disco-node is not installed, so not removed You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: disco-master : Depends: disco-node (= 0.4.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: python-disco (= 0.4.1) but 0.4.2+nmu1 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies.   Below are the release notes from today's deployment. 1. With today’s deployment we’ve made some significant changes to the source code experience. First of all, you’ll noticed that we moved the Source Code tab closer to the project home tab.   We believe that this will help make source code more discoverable and emphasizes our focus on developer collaboration. The next thing you’ll notice is that when you click on the Source Code tab, you will immediately be browsing code. We want to get you to the project source code in a minimum number of clicks, and this change helps get you there. The changeset history is still there, which brings us to the next change… We implemented an action bar in the source code section, which will make certain actions more discoverable, including forking, cloning, and downloading source code The popups in the action bar will help you perform the tasks you need to do when contributing to projects, as well as managing your own projects. Take a look at how easy it is to find the clone/connection URL now! 2. The second exciting thing we turned on this week is the ability to enable Windows Azure Web Sites to build and deploy your project source code (for Git source code projects).   Here are the notes for this week’s release: Diffs in Pull Requests and Commits We altered the way we display diffs across commits and pull requests to maximize the amount of vertical real estate devoted to the diff. Before, the viewport for diffs was always snapped to the height of the browser, which meant that on lower resolutions, the amount of space for viewing diffs could become very tiny. Now, the majority of the browser vertical space is devoted to viewing the diffs. Let us know what you think!   Here are the notes for today’s release: Added a progress indicator when saving issues. Added support for viewing CodePlex RSS feeds in Chrome. Deployed several bug fixes: Fixed an issue where the back button on Internet Explorer was not working as intended when browsing code. Fixed an issue where long commit comments would push the source control info box outside of the boundaries of the page. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer users were not able to widen the frame of the source code browser until a file was selected. Fixed an issue where opening a source code file directly from a URL in Internet Explorer would cause the source code tree to be collapsed. Fixed an issue where adding a code snippet with long lines of text to a discussion thread using Internet Explorer would needlessly display a vertical scrollbar, limiting the amount of code visible. Fixed an issue where tabbing through some links would render them invisible. We deprecated support for embedding PreEmptive analytics statistics on the project statistics page. • Release Notes for 5/18/2012

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve added the ability to see the snippets of code where a user commented inline in the discussion of pull requests. You can also add another line comment directly from the discussion area, rather than navigating to the code diff viewer. Note that there’s currently a known issue where the line associated with the comment isn’t being properly differentiated for existing pull requests (the line in the middle of each diff preview should be bolded). Apologies for the inconvenience! As part of this work, we also took some time to clean up our diff viewer UI to remove the dots and introduce a new color scheme where green is used for added lines. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue affecting the ability to assign pull requests. Fixed an issue where managing various team resources for a project was not working in Chrome or Firefox. Fixed an issue where a project’s RSS subscribe dialog popped up in the wrong place. Fixed an issue where editing wiki anchor links would insert extra characters, resulting in broken links. Fixed an issue where project logos did not display correctly when browsing the site with https in Chrome or Firefox. Fixed an issue where users could encounter errors when deleting remote Git branches. Fixed an issue affecting the ability of fork collaborators to push changes to the fork. Fixed an issue where the advanced work item filters would not persist when navigating through result pages. Fixed an issue where the issue tracker notifications link was not clickable in Chrome. Fixed an issue where pull request comments with line breaks would not be formatted properly when viewing the pull request. Other We upgraded our Git servers to version 1.7.10.1.   Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve moved the pull request creation UI from a modal dialog to a full page to make room for more context on what you’re sending with your pull request. In this week’s changes, you’ll see the list of commits; look for diffs to appear in the coming weeks. Corrected several issues where the line that had comments associated was not being properly differentiated in the code snippet previews on pull request discussions. Corrected an issue where pull request line comments would not appear to be associated with the proper line of code. Fixed an issue where accepting pull requests was not working properly. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue where code snippets could not be inserted using Opera. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer displayed an error message when browsing the site using https.   Here are the notes for this week’s release on CodePlex: Improved the diff viewer to take you directly to the first diff when viewing a file’s diff. We decreased the size of all of our form elements to be more in line with the rest of the content of our site. Fixed various issues around interacting with the diff viewer, especially around scrolling and interacting with the splitter. Fixed an issue where non-project members were seeing inapplicable TFS connection instructions when clicking on the source code details of a project. Fixed an issue where searching with the enter key on the advanced issue tracker was not working. Removed the confirmation pop-up when picking SVN as a source control option. Fixed an issue where the bulk editing dialog of issues in Internet Explorer would become unusable if there were values to choose. Fixed an issue where project logos would not show up when browsing under https in FireFox and Chrome. Fixed an issue affecting the formatting of code in pull request code comment notifications. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue that prevented users from downloading files if they were using an ad blocker browser plug-in. Fixed an issue that caused harmless error messages to appear when pushing changes using Git. Fixed an issue where visiting the project openings search results would result in a non-functional search box. Fixed an issue where projects would break if users attempted to publish the project with an empty description. Known Issues The formatting of tabs on pull requests has disappeared.
