• Do MSDTC and disaster recovery go together?

  Our application writes to multiple Sql Server databases within a distributed transaction. The Ops guys are saying that this messes up their disaster recovery plan because while the transactions on the live tables may commit at the same time, the log shipping on the separate databases happen at slightly different times. So in in a disaster recovery situation, there will be a few partial transactions. Is there a method for maintaining separate but synced databases in DR? Or do we have to re-design to relatively independent databases (or a single database)?

• Eclipse RCP application launcher not working properly in Arabic

  I have an RCP application which I build using the .product file and PDE. In my product file I create a binary launcher for different applications to provide convenience to the user. It all works fine except when testing in Arabic languages. In Arabic the application starts and it actually shows the Arabic characters that I mocked for testing but, it does not mirror. That said, if I invoke the launcher and pass the -nl switch launcher.exe -nl AR Then it mirrors. Also if I launch from the IDE with the target platform environment set to AR it mirrors too. I am shipping the bidi plugins for jface and swt (along with the NL plugins) and for the platform delta packs... Does anynone know what could be wrong with the laucher?

Alternately, if I were to rewrite it in F# (or even Haskell), what kinds (if any) of reliability increase might I see? Code Contracts? ASML?   Here is the situation: There is a transaction intensive database - used for both routine transactions and reports. I was wondering if I could isolate these two operations and 2 independent databases, so reports could run off of one database and all the transactions could occur in another one. This would improve performance for the OLTP SQL database. • Transportation Web App - utilizing google or bing map api

  I am working on a transportation web app and I am having a bit of a problem. First, I want to be able to define a shipping corridor, say like I-95 between Baltimore MD and Richmond VA. And store what parameters I need to define this route. Users will then use a web interface and can select various routes, in this case, I-95. Vendors will be posting constantly changing pickup locations in the application database which have a shelf life of about 2 days. Some of these locations maybe along this route. I am storing the LAT and LONG for the specific location right now. If any of these points ARE along or within 2 mile of the route (just off the highway basically - the ideal check would based on an actual highway exit but at this point anything would work), I want them to show up in my search results. Any ideas or suggestions?

  I'm working on my first 'real' F# assembly, and trying to do things right. I've managed to get xUnit working too, but currently my test module is inside the same assembly. This bothers me a bit, because it means I'll be shipping an assembly where nearly half the code (and 80% of the API) is test methods. What is the 'right' way to do this? If I put the tests in another assembly, I think that means I have to expose internals that I'd rather keep private. I know that in C# there is a friend mechanism for tests (if that's the right terminology), is there an equivalent in F#? Alternatively, can anyone point me to an example project where this is being done 'properly'?

One school of thought says pick one neutral color, and use the same one everywhere.   I'm attempting to use 'jQuery Validate' on a form that requires an email address plus either all items of a shipping address completed or none at all. Using the sample provided by the solution to this question: jQuery Validate - “Either skip these fields, or fill at least X of them”, I have been able to successfully solve the validation of the address group. The problem, however, is that the logic for validating the email address field does not work. From debugging the Validate scripts, the "re-entrant" validation code triggered by calling 'fields.data('being_validated', true).valid();' in the linked example results in a reset of all previously validated errors (i.e. the email validation error is cleared). I have modified some existing samples, the first in which removes the offending line and the second with it included.   Hi, I have a shipping/billing input form and I'm having trouble styling the input fields to be the same width... Here is a link (click one of the order bottles to go to the checkout page which contains the form) The Problem: -a field <input type="text" size="X" /> appears to render with different sizes in different browsers (see link). -In addition, select fields seem to render on a differently as well. -Chrome/safari do not seem to respond to the font-size property for select fields. Any guidance on how to stylize the size of text-input and select fields cross-browser would be oh so very helpful. Must I result to having a different sytlesheet for each browser... just for these input fields? -thanks

• Migrating from Physical SQL (SQL2000) To VMWare machine (SQL2008) - Transferring Large DB

  We're in the middle of migrating from a windows & SQL 2000 box to a Virtualised Win & SQL 2k8 box The VMWare box is on a different site, with better hardware, connectivity etc... The old(current) physical machine is still in constant use - I've taken a backup of the DB on this machine, which is 21GB Transfering this to our virtual machine took around 7+ hours - which isn't ideal when we do the "actual" switchover. My question is - How should I handle the migration better? Could i set up our current machine to do log shipping to the VM machine to keep up to date? then, schedule down time out of hours to do the switch over? Is there a better way?

• Is it possible to do have Capistrano do a checkout over a reverse SSH tunnel?

  I am developing an application that resides on a public host but whose source I must keep in a Git repository behind a corporate firewall. I'm getting very tired of the slowness of deploying via scp (copying the whole repository and shipping it over SSH on each deploy) and would like to have the remote host simply do a git pull to update. The problem is that the firewall prohibits incoming SSH connections. Would it be possible for me to set up an SSH tunnel from my computer to the deployment computer and use my repository as the source for the git pull? After all, git is distributed, so my copy is just as valid a repository as the central one. If this is possible, what would the tunnel command and the Capistrano configuration be? I think the tunnel will look something like ssh -R something:deployserver.com:something [email protected]

• Implications of Fulltext Search over many columns

  Hello, I have a really wide table which includes separate columns for billing address, shipping address, primary address, names, aliases etc. (I can't normalize this table further, and that's not the question here anyways). I'm implementing SQL Server fulltext search, and I'm wondering whether I should limit the search ability to just the primary fields (primary address and names for example), or if I can extend the search ability across all columns without occurring too much of a performance or memory penalty. I've done some basic testing with 10,000 sample rows and it's quite fast but I don't have much experience with fulltext indexing, especially its dictionary internals, so I don't know if the index is going to grow over time, or if there is anything else to consider. Thoughts?

• jQuery ajax request to php, how to return plain text only

  I am making an ajax request to a php page and I cannot for the life of me get it to just return plain text. $.ajax({ type: 'GET', url: '/shipping/test.php', cache: false, dataType: 'text', data: myData, success: function(data){ console.log(data) } }); in test.php I am including this script to get UPS rates. I am then calling the function with $rate = ups($dest_zip,$service,$weight,$length,$width,$height); I am doing echo $rate; at the bottom of test.php. When viewed in a browser shows the rate, that's great. But when I request the page via ajax I get a bunch of XML.   Have a homework assignment in which I'm supposed to create a vector of pointers to objects Later on down the load, I'll be using inheritance/polymorphism to extend the class to include fees for two-day delivery, next day air, etc. However, that is not my concern right now. The final goal of the current program is to just print out every object's content in the vector (name & address) and find it's shipping cost (weight*cost). • Really basic Django E-commerce? Where do I start

  I'm trying to set up a really basic e-commerce site with Django, and am trying to figure out the best place to start. I am relatively comfortable with the framework itself, but have never done any sort of e-commerce development in any language, so I want to learn about some best practices so I don't make any huge or obvious mistakes. I've looked at Satchmo, and even went as far as installing and playing around with it, but it looks like way more than I want. I basically want to show users a list of things, and let them click a button to buy one. No cart, no shipping, just click a button, connect with Authorize.net (or something similar) to do the transaction, and then display a confirmation page. Any suggestions or online tutorials people have found helpful? Even perhaps a tutorial in another language. Or maybe a really lightweight Django plugin that doesn't try to do everything like Satchmo?   I want to check to see if an array is empty to activate a shipping method. Here is the code for returning the array. • how to effectively keep/update postal and telephone code format for each country?

  hi there, currently we have a table for regex format for phone and postal code for countries that we use to validate when the user register through our forms. but the problem remains on the maintenance on the correctness of these format, thus what's a good way to ensure that we always have the latest copy of this information? is there a web service/etc that i can use to get this? or does it even make sense to keep all these format but instead use a relaxed method to ensure that the user just keys in something which roughly matches the format? the information is used solely for shipping and billing address. we're using asp.net 2.0 btw. thanks ~steve
