In this Issue: Sigurd Snørteland, Jeff Prosise, DaveDev, Joe Zhou, Chris Eargle, John Papa(-2-, -3-), and David Anson(-2-). Shoutouts: In with the links I've listed below, Sigurd Snørteland also sent a link to this app he's working on which is actually pretty cool to see: ZuneLight. The code is not yet available. He also has a no-code demo of a Silverlight Media Center Pieter Voloshyn, Luiz Thadeu, and Jhun Iti have a very nice Silverlight image editor up: Thumba From SilverlightCream.com: WP7 - Silverlight on mobile Sigurd Snørteland submitted some links for me that have been translated to English from his blog. I hope the pages come out good because he's got a lot of good stuff on there. This one has a link to a presentation he did, and 4 projects you can load up in the emulator that he's converted to the phone: weather, worldclock, coverflow, and solitaire ... pretty cool... thanks for the links Sigurd! Understanding Page Orientation in Silverlight for Windows Phone Jeff Prosise has a really nice post up on page orientation in WP7 ... what it means to your app, how to detect it, and example code for what to do then... also love a quote by Jeff: "Silverlight for Windows Phone is the hottest thing since color TV" Why you should check out Expression Blend Behaviors when using Silverlight DaveDev has a post up describing Behaviors and why we should use them, plus tons of external links to resources, blogs, videos... all good stuff... Fiddler inspector for WCF Silverlight Polling Duplex and WCF RIA Joe Zhou announces and provides a link to a new Fiddler inspector that understands the framing in Polling Duplex and also raw binary xml and binary SOAP. Windows Phone Controls v0.7 Chris Eargle reports the release of Version 0.7 of the Windows Phone Controls project on CodePlex ... this includes a Pivot Control and a Panorama Control... both very nicely done. Binding to Silverlight ComboBox and Using SelectedValue, SelectedValuePath and DisplayMemberPath John Papa responds to a user question and put up a nice post about binding to a ComboBox and then go from the selected item to some other property ... code included No More Boxes! Exploring the PathListBox (Silverlight TV #25) Silverlight TV 25 went up on Tuesday ... thought it was going to be Thursday?? anyway ... John Papa and Adam Kinney are discussing the PathListBox and looking at some cool demos thereof. Exposing SOAP, OData, and JSON Endpoints for RIA Services (Silverlight TV 26) Since today IS Thursday, we have a new Silverlight TV, number 26, and John Papa is chatting with Deepesh Mohnani of the WCF RIA Services team about exposing all sorts of endpoints... should be something in there for everybody :) Workaround for a Silverlight data binding bug affecting various scenarios - including DataGrid+ContextMenu David Anson details the rabbit-trail he and others on the team followed in response to a problem reported via Twitter where the binding on a DataGrid seemed off by a row(!) ... weird but true, validated, and SL3/4 are bug-for-bug compatible with this too! ... But David wouldn't leave us there.. he also has a workaround. Sharing the code for a simple Silverlight 4 REST-based cloud-oriented file management app for Azure and S3 David Anson had an opportunity to build an app he's wanted to build for a while and shares it with us: Blobstore -- a small, lightweight Silverlight 4 application that acts as a basic front-end for the Windows Azure Simple Data Storage and the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) -- and remember I said he shared the source :) Stay in the 'Light! • Tales from the Trenches – Building a Real-World Silverlight Line of Business Application

    - by dwahlin
There's rarely a boring day working in the world of software development. Part of the fun associated with being a developer is that change is guaranteed and the more you learn about a particular technology the more you realize there's always a different or better way to perform a task. I've had the opportunity to work on several different real-world Silverlight Line of Business (LOB) applications over the past few years and wanted to put together a list of some of the key things I've learned as well as key problems I've encountered and resolved. There are several different topics I could cover related to "lessons learned" (some of them were more painful than others) but I'll keep it to 5 items for this post and cover additional lessons learned in the future. The topics discussed were put together for a TechEd talk: Pick a Pattern and Stick To It Data Binding and Nested Controls Notify Users of Successes (and failures) Get an Agent – A Service Agent Extend Existing Controls The first topic covered relates to architecture best practices and how the MVVM pattern can save you time in the long run. When I was first introduced to MVVM I thought it was a lot of work for very little payoff. I've since learned (the hard way in some cases) that my initial impressions were dead wrong and that my criticisms of the pattern were generally caused by doing things the wrong way. In addition to MVVM pros the slides and sample app below also jump into data binding tricks in nested control scenarios and discuss how animations and media can be used to enhance LOB applications in subtle ways. Finally, a discussion of creating a re-usable service agent to interact with backend services is discussed as well as how existing controls make good candidates for customization. I tried to keep the samples simple while still covering the topics as much as possible so if you’re new to Silverlight you should definitely be able to follow along with a little study and practice. I’d recommend starting with the SilverlightDemos.View project, moving to the SilverlightDemos.ViewModels project and then going to the SilverlightDemos.ServiceAgents project. All of the backend “Model” code can be found in the SilverlightDemos.Web project. Custom controls used in the app can be found in the SivlerlightDemos.Controls project.   Sample Code and Slides

  • Using the BackgroundWorker in a Silverlight MVVM Application

    - by axshon
With Silverlight 4 and the Entity Framework you get a lot of work done on your behalf in terms of standard UI CRUD-style operations. Validations and I/O are pretty easy to accommodate out of the box. But sometimes you need to perform some long running tasks either on the client or on the server via service calls. To prevent your UI from hanging and annoying your users, you should consider placing these operations on a background thread. The BackgroundWorker object is the perfect solution for this...(read more)

  • How to programmatically create customcontrol and change its values in Silverlight 4

    - by user361317
Hi! I want to create a custom tabcontrol class which has an icon before the text, and I want to be able to change the icon in the constructor of the new tabcontrol. I use implicit styles in Silverlight 4, and the custom tabcontrol should not have any xaml of its own, just the class and the implicit xaml style in my App.xaml. I cannot, however, get this to work. This is my code: <!-- Style for generic tabcontrols --> 20,0,0,0 <Style TargetType="controls:TabItem"> <Setter Property="IsTabStop" Value="False"/> <Setter Property="Background" Value="#FFDBEDFB"/> <Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="#FFA3AEB9"/> <Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="1"/> <Setter Property="Padding" Value="6,2,6,2"/> <Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="Stretch"/> <Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="Stretch"/> <Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="5"/> <Setter Property="MinHeight" Value="5"/> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="controls:TabItem"> <Grid x:Name="Root" Cursor="Hand" Height="25"> <VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups> <VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates"> Is this even possible? Can someone point me in the right direction? Cheers! - jonah

  • Binding a dependency property to another dependency property

    - by Rire1979
Take this scenario where I am working with a grid like control: <RadGrid DataContext={Binding someDataContextObject, Mode=OneWay}> <RadGrid.columns> <RadGrid.Column Header="Column Header" DataMember="{Binding dataContextObjectProperty, Mode=OneWay}"> [...] <DataTemplate> <MyCustomControl Data="{Binding ???}" /> </DataTemplate> <\RadGrid.Column> </RadGrid.columns> </RadGrid> I would like to bind the Data dependency property of MyCustomControl to the DataMember dependency property of the column to avoid multiple bindings to the same data. How do I do it?

  • Silverlight Cream for May 25, 2010 - 2 -- #870

    - by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Kirupa, Matthias Shapiro(-2-, -3-), Giorgetti Alessandro, Kunal Chowdhury, Mike Snow, and Jason Zander. Shoutout: This looks like a really nice WP7 app done by a team of folks for Imagine Cup 2010: Ahead ... I hope to see some blog posts and code on this! From SilverlightCream.com, and remember you can send me a link to your post or submit at SilverlightCream.com: Control Storyboards Easily using Behaviors Kirupa is following through on a promise to discuss the Behaviors that come on-board Blend. He's starting with two to help deal with Storyboards: ControlStoryboardAction and the StoryboardCompletedTrigger. PHP, MySQL and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 1) Matthias Shapiro has a 3-parter up on PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight -- wondered how I missed this first one until I realized they all posted in 2 days... this first post sets up the MySQL database to be used. PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 2) In part 2, Matthias Shapiro writes a PHP web service that grabs the data from the database and sends it in JSON format to the Silverlight app (see part 3). PHP, MySQL, and Silverlight: The Complete Tutorial (Part 3) Matthias Shapiro's part 3 is the Silverlight part that reads the JSON produced by the PHP webservice from Part 2, to provide display and edits of the data... and this whole series includes source. Silverlight: adding an IsEditing property to the DataForm Giorgetti Alessandro laments the lack of an IsEditing property in the DataForm, then goes on to demonstrate his path to a suitable workaround. Step-by-Step Command Binding in Silverlight 4 Kunal Chowdhury has a nicely-detailed post on Command Binding in Silverlight 4 and builds up a demo MVVM app in the process... source project included. Silverlight Tip of the Day #24 – Resolving Unknown Objects in VS I'm not sure I would call Mike Snow's latest Silverlight Tip 'Silverlight' ... but if you don't know it, you need to. Sample: Windows Phone 7 Example Application with Landscape Layout Whoa... check out the WP7 app Jason Zander did with landscape mode defined... you're going to want to refer back to this one... • Getting Ramped for Silverlight 4

    - by GeekAgilistMercenary
Here is a quick walk through of setting up your Silverlight 4 development environment.  The first assumed step is that you have Visual Studio 2010 already installed and any appropriate patches.  Then download the following in order and install each. Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio and Silverlight 4 RTW Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate Silverlight Toolkit - Not necessary, but lots of good bits in this download. WCF RIA Services - This is also not necessary, but you should grab it just in case anyway. Once each of these are installed jump into Visual Studio 2010.  Start a new Silverlight 4 Project by going to File -> New -> Project -> and select the Silverlight Project Templates.  Here you'll see a new list of projects that are specific to the above listed downloads. Silverlight Business Application WCF RIA Service Class Library Silverlight Unit Test Application One way to confirm (and what I am going to display here in this entry) Silverlight 4 is installed ok is to select the Silverlight Application Template and start a new project. On the next screen you will see some of the standard options.  I always go with the ASP.NET MVC Option and with these new installations I am going to select Silverlight 4 (should be selected already) from the drop down and check the Enable WCF RIA Services check box. I also, for good measure, always create a unit test project for the ASP.NET MVC Project that will host the Silverlight Application Project.  When all is setup, the Solutions Explorer should look like what is shown below. Add the following code to the XAML of the MainPage.xaml of the Silverlight Project. <UserControl x:Class="Silverlight4.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400">   <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <TextBlock x:Name="textBlockTest" Text="Hello World!" /> </Grid> </UserControl> Now execute the project, if all runs well you have installed Silverlight 4 successfully. Bam!  Silverlight 4 ready to go!  I will have more on Silverlight 4 very soon, as I will be starting a project (personal) and blogging it as I work through it.  Also, if you run into any issues I would like to read about them, so please comment.  I had a few issues and also had some design time rendering issues in the VS 2010 IDE when I installed these bits at first. Check out the original entry here.

  • 'Element is already the child of another element' error in Silverlight App.xaml

    - by rwwilden
Hi, I keep getting a strange error inside my App.xaml file: Element is already the child of another element. My App.xaml file looks like this: <Application xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" x:Class="Celerior.Annapurna.SL.App"> <Application.Resources> <ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="ProvisiorResourceDictionary.xaml"/> </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> </ResourceDictionary> </Application.Resources> </Application> The error is reported for the entire ResourceDictionary element (from lines 5 to 9). ProvisiorResourceDictionary.xaml contains a number of styles and templates. Nothing exciting in my opinion. Does anyone know what is wrong? Kind regards, Ronald Wildenberg

    Hello, I have a datagrid with master detail implementation as follows: <data:DataGrid x:Name="dgData" Width="600" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=ItemCollection}" HorizontalScrollBarVisibility="Hidden" CanUserSortColumns="False" RowDetailsVisibilityChanged="dgData_RowDetailsVisibilityChanged"> <data:DataGrid.Columns> <data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Item" Width="*" Binding="{Binding Item,Mode=TwoWay}"/> <data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Company" Width="*" Binding="{Binding Company,Mode=TwoWay}"/> </data:DataGrid.Columns> <data:DataGrid.RowDetailsTemplate> <DataTemplate> <data:DataGrid x:Name="dgrdRowDetail" Width="400" AutoGenerateColumns="False" HorizontalAlignment="Center" HorizontalScrollBarVisibility="Hidden" Grid.Row="1"> <data:DataGrid.Columns> <data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Date" Width="*" Binding="{Binding Date,Mode=TwoWay}"/> <data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Price" Width="*" Binding="{Binding Price, Mode=TwoWay}"/> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Button Content="Show More Details" Click="buttonShowDetail_Click"></Button> </DataTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn> </data:DataGrid.Columns> </data:DataGrid> </DataTemplate> </data:DataGrid.RowDetailsTemplate> </data:DataGrid> I want to open a Child window in clicking the button which shows more details about the product. I'm using MVVM pattern. My Model contains a method which takes the Item name as input and retursn the Details data. My problem is how should I pass the Item to ViewModel which will get the Details data from Model? and where shoukd I open the new Child Window? In View or ViewModel? Please help.Thanks.

  • Silverlight 4 RichTextbox Paragraph Margin or similar?

    - by Nacho
Hi All, I'm trying to add bullets to the SL4 RichTextBox. Using the Run / Paragraph objects and adding the correct bullet child seems to be an easy approach. However, when I want to apply a bullet to an existing paragraph, I would like to indent the content of the paragraph. How can apply this kind of styling to the paragraph? The margin doesn't exist for the SL version of Paragraph. Thanks.

  • Silverlight themee error: Cannot find a Resource with the Name/Key System.Windows.Controls.Primitive

    - by Mark
I have got an(other) error while trying to upgrade our large project to SL4. I didn't write the original theme and my theme knowlege isn't great. In my SL3 app I have a datagrid themed like so: <!--Datagrid Style--> <Style TargetType="datagrid:DataGrid"> <Setter Property="RowHeaderStyle" Value="{StaticResource System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.DataGridRowHeader}"/> <Setter Property="RowBackground" Value="Transparent"/> <Setter Property="etc" Value="..."/> </Style> When I upgrade to SL 4 the first line in the XAML above gives a runtime error: Cannot find a Resource with the Name/Key System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.DataGridRowHeader Should I handle this differently in SL4? TIA Mark Example showing error: http://walkersretreat.co.nz/files/SilverlightApplication1.zip

  • Binding property to Silverlight dependency property independent of DataContext

    - by Simon_Weaver
I'm trying to make an Address control that has an IsReadOnly property, which will make every TextBox inside read only when set to true. <my:AddressControl Grid.Column="1" Margin="5" IsReadOnly="True"/> I've managed to do this just fine with a dependency property and it works. Here's a simple class with the dependency property declared : public partial class AddressControl : UserControl { public AddressControl() { InitializeComponent(); this.DataContext = this; } public static readonly DependencyProperty IsReadOnlyProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("IsReadOnly", typeof(bool), typeof(AddressControl), null); public bool IsReadOnly { get { return (bool)GetValue(IsReadOnlyProperty); } set { SetValue(IsReadOnlyProperty, value); } } } In the XAML for this codebehind file I have a Textbox for each address line: <TextBox IsReadOnly="{Binding IsReadOnly}" Text="{Binding City, Mode=TwoWay}"/> <TextBox IsReadOnly="{Binding IsReadOnly}" Text="{Binding State, Mode=TwoWay}"/> <TextBox IsReadOnly="{Binding IsReadOnly}" Text="{Binding Zip, Mode=TwoWay}"/> Like i said this works just fine. The problem is that the Address control itself is bound to its parent object (I have several addresses I am binding). <my:AddressControl DataContext="{Binding ShippingAddress, Mode=TwoWay}" IsReadOnly="True"> <my:AddressControl DataContext="{Binding BillingAddress, Mode=TwoWay}" IsReadOnly="True"> The problem is that as soon as I set DataContext to something other than 'this' then the binding for IsReadOnly breaks. Not surprising because its looking for IsReadOnly on the Address data entity and it doesn't exist or belong there. I've tried just about every combination of binding attributes to get IsReadOnly to bind to the AddressControl obejct but can't get it working. I've tried things like this, but I can't get IsReadOnly to bind independently to the AddressControl property instead of its DataContext. <TextBox IsReadOnly="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}, Path=IsReadOnlyProperty}" Text="{Binding City, Mode=TwoWay}" /> I think I'm pretty close. What am I doing wrong?

  • silverlight master-detail with two listboxes in pure xaml with ria services throwing exception

    - by Sam
    Hi, I was trying to achieve master-detail with 2 ListBox, 2 DomainDataSource and a IValueConverter, when entering the page it throws the random error it does when your xaml is invalid: "AG_E_PARSER_BAD_PROPERTY_VALUE [Line: 24 Position: 61]" Which is in fact the start position of where I am binding the listbox selected item with converter to the parameter's value of my DomainDataSource. I would love to achieve this by pure xaml, I did it by code behind and that works but I don't like it :p When the parameter is a hard-coded integer 1, it works, so I assume it's the value binding My code is below here, thanks in advance for at least looking :) (taken into accound all the xmlns's & usings are correct) Xaml: <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <Grid.Resources> <helpers:ListItemtoIdListValueConverter x:Key="mListConverter" /> </Grid.Resources> <riacontrols:DomainDataSource x:Name="GetLists" DomainContext="{StaticResource DbContext}" LoadSize="20" QueryName="GetLists" AutoLoad="True" /> <riacontrols:DomainDataSource x:Name="GetListItems" DomainContext="{StaticResource DbContext}" LoadSize="20" QueryName="GetListItemsById" AutoLoad="True"> <riacontrols:DomainDataSource.QueryParameters> <riadata:Parameter ParameterName="id" Value="{Binding ElementName=ListBoxLists, Path=SelectedItem, Converter={StaticResource mListConverter}}" /> </riacontrols:DomainDataSource.QueryParameters> </riacontrols:DomainDataSource> <activity:Activity IsActive="{Binding IsBusy, ElementName=ListBoxListItems}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <ListBox x:Name="ListBoxLists" ItemsSource="{Binding Data, ElementName=GetLists, Mode=OneWay}" Width="150" Margin="0,0,10,10" /> <ListBox x:Name="ListBoxListItems" ItemsSource="{Binding Data, ElementName=GetListItems, Mode=OneWay}" Width="150" Margin="0,0,10,10" /> </StackPanel> </activity:Activity> </Grid> IValueConverter: public class ListItemtoIdListValueConverter: IValueConverter { #region IValueConverter Members public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { list mList = (list)value; if (mList != null) return mList.id; else return null; } public object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion }

  • Silverlight 3 XamlReader Exception not caught

    - by Andrej
Hi, when I use XamlReader.Load() with an invalid XAML string, the resulting XAMLParseException is not caught although beeing in a try-catch-block: try { UIElement xamlCode = XamlReader.Load(XamlText) as UIElement; } catch (Exception ex) { ErrorText = ex.Message; } The code is called from the Tick-Event of a DispatcherTimer, but also in Events like MouseLeftButtonDown the exception is not caught resulting in a break in the Line where I call .Load(). Does anyone know how to catch this Exception and resume normal programm activity? Thanks, Andrej
