• Looking for internet traffic manager software for Windows 7

  I have 128 KB/s (1 Mbit/s) internet connection. Not quite fast for downloading big files, but it is okay for internet browsing. When I start big file dowload, I cannot surf the web normally: pages appears slowly, especially pictures there. Therefore I pause downloading, but I'm regularly spending much time on reading articles or leaving the computer alone, when I can allow the file being dowloaded. Is there any software that can automize the process of pausing and resuming download or simply automatically regulate internet speed for each application using Internet? I download files using different software and protocols (Download Master for http, ftp; uTorrent for torrents; many other programs for updating themselves), so I don't want to be tied to particular program for downloading.

• Disable/configure Back and Forward through mouse wheel in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with Internet Explorer (version 7 on Windows XP). Sometimes (not always) when you use the mouse wheel to scroll a page up/down it instead chooses to go back or forth in the web browsing history. This behavior is the same as when you hold the shift-key simultaneously using the wheel. My guess is that Internet Explorer somehow gets misled by something and thinks that I'm actually pressing shift. This is in turn maybe an artifact of the fact that this particular session is a remote-desktop session originating from Linux (Ubuntu). Needless to say the problem can be quite irritating and the alternative of completely turning off the wheel functionality doesn't seem like an option as other applications would suffer greatly from this. Anyway back to my question(s): Is it possible to map the shift+wheel to a simple wheel event for Internet Explorer? Is it possible to disable the shift+wheel event for Internet Explorer? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

• Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

• 32 bit programs can't access Internet in Windows 7 64 bit

  I recently got a new ASUS laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. It worked OK for a while but a couple of days ago, suddenly I couldn't access the Internet any more. After narrowing down the problem, I've reached the conclusion that what's happened is that 32 bit programs are suddenly not able to use the Internet, but 64 bit applications work just fine. Examples of programs that DON'T work any more: Google chrome Firefox Internet Explorer 8 World of Warcraft Examples of programs that DO work: Internet Explorer 8 (64 bit) ping (command line) nslookup (command line) ftp (command line) I'm pretty sure that those command line apps are 64 bit native. A re-install of Windows using the recovery partition on the laptop did fix the problem temporarily, but now it's back again. And I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place getting someone to take the responsibility for this; the vendor says to talk to ASUS, ASUS says it's a software issue, and Microsoft doesn't give support on OEM licenses... Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

• Can't access the Internet in VMware Workstation

  I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS. In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet. I've tried the following but with no success: Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work. Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC - neither of them work. I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months - previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?

  I have a windows 8 hp dual booting ubuntu. When i log onto windows i cant get on the internet... But skype and other applications can just now webpages in a browser what so ever (this is on windows 8). But on ubuntu i have no internet issues at all. From what i see right now its only the browsers in windows 8 that cant get the internet, and ive tried all the browsers i had (chrome, ie, firefox) and they cant connect but in the win8 notification area it says im connected. I can even ping via cmd. HELP! Thanks. Whats not working is that i cant get access the internet through the windows 8 broswer.

• Why I don't use SSIS checkpoint files

  In a recent discussion in regard to general ETL best practises the subject of checkpoint files as a means for package restartability came up and I stated that I was dead against using them. For anyone that may care, here is why: Configuring them is distinctly unintuitive (that's a matter of opinion but if you follow the link I'll wager that you will agree) they don't make any allowance for loop iterations they cannot store variables of type Object they are limited in ability. There are many scenarios where you may want to execute certain containers regardless of whether the package is started from a checkpoint file but the current usage model does not allow for this. they are ignored by eventhandlers, which wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to toggle this behaviour in certain scenarios they dont work properly I'll expand on the last bullet point. I have encountered situations where the behaviour for tasks executing concurrently is unpredictable. That is, sometimes the completion of a task that executes concurrently with a failed/failing task will make it into the checkpoint file and sometimes it won't. This is near-impossible to reproduce but it does happen as my good friend John Welch will hopefully concur (if he is reading). Is anyone out there making successful use of checkpoint files within SSIS? I would be interested in knowing about that if so. @Jamiet

• How to serve static files for multiple Django projects via nginx to same domain

  I am trying to setup my nginx conf so that I can serve the relevant files for my multiple Django projects. Ultimately I want each app to be available at www.example.com/app1, www.example.com/app2 etc. They all serve static files from a 'static-files' directory located in their respective project root. The project structure: Home Ubuntu Web www.example.com ref logs app app1 app1 static bower_components templatetags app1_project templates static-files app2 app2 static templates templatetags app2_project static-files app3 tests templates static-files static app3_project app3 venv When I use the conf below, there are no problems for serving the static-files for the app that I designate in the /static/ location. I can also access the different apps found at their locations. However, I cannot figure out how to serve all of the static files for all the apps at the same time. I have looked into using the 'try_files' command for the static location, but cannot figure out how to see if it is working or not.   I have collected many free themes from around internet. Each of them has a screenshot.jpg or png file on their folder. I want to scan all the folders for that file, and return the full file path to be used with an img html tag. I am not interested on partial path or folders where there are not screenshots. For example, if my fodler structure is: ./a/b/ ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./f/ ./g/screenshot.jpg ./h/i/j/k/ ./l/m/screenshot.png ./n/o/ ./p/screenshot.jpg I want to get: ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./g/screenshot.jpg ./l/m/screenshot.png ./p/screenshot.jpg I managed somehow to get a recursive function, but I figured only the way to return an array and then i can't get rid of what I don't need, and I miss png. • Where are bluetooth received files saved

  I have used Blueman and the default Bluetooth manager an every time I accept the file transfer from the Phone to the PC, it shows that it is transferring and even notifies me that the transfer was successful but I can not find the image anywhere. Where are files stored after sending them via Bluetooth to the PC? I already checked my Home folder. The Picture folder which I thought it would be the one for images. Then the document folder and afterwards I did a huge check on all folders under /home. No luck. Is nowhere. I even checked this answer with no luck.

We are utilizing a cache layer to reduce database load, but we think that it's a good idea to minimize the actual data needed to be stored in the cache layer to speed up the application further. All the products in the database, that is visible to visitors have a price attached to them: The prices are stored in a different table, called prices . There are multiple price categories depending on which discount level each visitor (customer) applies to. From time to time, there are campaigns which means that a special price for each product is available. The special prices are stored in a table called specials. Is it a bad to make a temp table that binds the tables together? It would only have the neccessary information and would ofcourse be cached. -------------|-------------|------------ | productId | hasPrice | hasSpecial -------------|-------------|------------ 1 | 1 | 0 2 | 1 | 1 By doing such, it would be super easy to know if the specific product really has a price, without having to iterate through the complete prices or specials table each time a product should be listed or presented. Are temp tables a common thing for web applications or is it just bad design?

  Hi, I have created a window service and set some dependencies like on MSMQ, MSSQLSERVER and so. Everything is working nice. but i need to send another dependency for my service. That is on internet connection. My service is responsible for sending emails. As soon my server starts, my service starts too and it finds if there is anything to send, if there is, it starts to send email, if during sending it is not able to connect to the internet it cannot send email. so i guess i should set my service dependency on internet connection too. I already set my window service dependency to MicrosoftSQL Server and Microsoft Message Queuing by editing the registry value. by adding new multi string value named "DependOnService", Type "REG_MULTI_SZ" and space separated names of the services that my service depends upon for the Data. For Microsoft SQL Server i set the value to "MSSQLSERVER" but i don't know the name of the internet service that i need to set dependency upon. how can i do this, any help please Thanks

• The Wifi is working fine but no internet connection in Windows 8 [migrated]

  I'm currently having a Problem with my msi GT70 laptop. my laptop is running windows 8 and yesterday it requested a Restart to Update. after the Restart and the update I tried to surf the net through google chrome, the WiFi connection is perfect but the page I tried to access is not loading at all, after a while it shows failure to load page. I disabled and reenabled the WiFi chip through the device manager but still no internet connection. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, still no internet. I updated the Driver of the wifi, still no internet, I even went to Wifi configuration and tried to change the DNS and reset it back to automatically, still no Luck.. I'm really lost I don't know what to do, I don't want to go deep and play with Laptop DNA "aka: registry file" and screw things up. I really appreciate any help in this matter. thanks in advance. Note: I tried to access many pages but no luck. I even tried Firefox, Opera, even ie still no luck. The internet is working fine on my tablet and cellphone, except for the Laptop.

• Which hidden files and directories do I need?

  In a previous question, I explained my situation/plan: backing up home directory on external drive, reformatting laptop drive, installing 14.04, putting home directory back. (It hasn't happened yet because I can't seem to find the down time, in case things aren't working right away.) It occurred to me that maybe I don't want all of those hidden files and directories (e.g. .local/share/ubuntuone/syncdaemon/, .cache/google-chrome/, etc.) Just judging by the amount of time in copying, I can tell that some of these hidden directories are large. Question: Are there any hidden directories that I obviously don't need/want when I have the laptop running an updated distribution? Will they cause conflicts? (I plan on copying the backed-up directory tree back onto the laptop with the --no-clobber option.)

I know how to change the value of “general.useragent.extra.firefox” through about:config, but when I try to change it to IE, I still can’t access any website. I have Firefox 3.5.6 and Internet Explorer 7 installed on my desktop. Now, would I have to use the user agent that Internet Explorer 7 is currently using on my computer or can I use any Internet Explorer user agent? The user agent that Internet Explorer 7 is using right now is: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022). Do I just copy that and use it as the user agent in Firefox? How can I make this work?

• Internet Sharing on Lion breaks my routing table

  When in the office, I'm connected to a 192.168.1.0/24 network. When Internet Sharing is off, when I run netstat -nr the first entry shows default 192.168.1.254 UGSc 10 62 en0 If I turn Internet sharing on, it shows default link#5 UCS 2 0 en1 This is obviously incorrect and breaks all connectivity of my machine. en1 is my wireless, whereas en0 is my ethernet. If I then disable Internet Sharing, it even deletes that incorrect route, so I'm left with no default route at all. Currently I have one script that I run when I share, or after, when I disable that does route delete default route add default 192.168.1.254 That fixes everything, but I'd love to know what's actually making this happen and how to properly fix it. And just to say that at some point a few months ago, this was working absolutely perfectly, with no hitches, then one day when I brought the laptop home, I couldn't disable the internet sharing, so I couldn't connect to my home wifi. I eventually had to restart the machine and since then this problem has been happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

• Hiding images in folder without renaming or moving the files

  I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows and I have all my music on a separate harddrive. In Windows the album art is hidden by default but when I access the folder in Ubuntu there is two album artwork files for every mp3, one small and one large. I would like to hide those images without having to rename them with a dot before or moving them to some other folder becuase then the album artwork would dissapear in Windows. Is there a way to make a .hidden file which hides all images or any other way which hides all images in nautilus?
