• Incorrect instructions on Upgrading to 12.10 from 12.04LTS

The correct steps are: Alt+F2, Update Manager, choose settings, updates tab and set notify to "For any new version." Close the manager. Press Alt+F2, Terminal, then enter "sudo update-manager -d" (without the quotes)... Sorry to pester this list, but the Ubuntu wiki has no provisions for "Talk" or "Discussion" that do not require registration and a login. I feel like I should be able to point out a problem without signing in.

• 12.04 Ubuntu studio PREEMPT_RT kernel options

  My audio processing needs require a preempt_rt kernel. Multiple trials confirm I need the option: CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL=y I have the following questions: Is anyone maintaining a recent CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL kernel in a ppa? Is there any interest in providing a CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL in the official ubuntu-studio distribution? Does anyone have recent config pointers for a CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL kernel?

• Media keys play/pause globally worked in 12.10, not in 13.10

  Laptop media keys On Asus n55sf laptop, there are a dedicated keys for volume up, volume down, mute, [play/pause], stop, launch (plus a dozen Fn-key combinations). In 12.10 most worked. (Overall is seems unrelated to desktop environment used, stating it for the sake of completeness.) On Ubuntu 12.10 under XFCE they just worked. That is: when a player like rhythmbox or totem was started, it would alternate between play and pause. Interestingly, if several were started, they would alternate independently. E.g. use mouse to pause rhythmbox, launch totem, and one hit on [play/pause] key would pause one and resume the other. Keys Next,Previous and Stop worked as expected in any program. In 13.10 most still work, but play/skip related ignored. On Xubuntu 13.10 (XFCE too) the volume keys work but the [play/pause], stop, next and prev are ignored. Not tried regular Ubuntu 13.10 (Unity). Search before you ask Here are a few facts: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Architecture is ummutable and mentions Ubuntu 9.10. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting is also outdated as it mentions /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt which no longer exists. On 12.10 and 13.10 versions, at XFCE level (as visible by xfconf-query or using xfce4-settings-manager) there are a couple of shortcut for keys like XF86Calculator or XF86TouchpadToggle but nothing related to volume prev/next/play/stop, which is okay. XF86Audio substring doesn't appear in /etc (which is normal) Kernel-level test: "showkey -s" on console shows that keys Next,Play/Pause,Previous,Stop are keycodes 163,164,165,166. Nothing relevant in /etc about that. Reports https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/1072371 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1012365 suggest to adjust at udev level. Alas, the udev tutorials I found ( e.g. https://wiki.debian.org/udev ) don't even mention keyboard. A thread in french seems to deal with a similar issue: https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1395051. @sudo evtest /dev/input/event3@, in X as well as on plain console, reports events on key pressed and repeats, but nothing when pressing those media keys. Is udev a dead end ? Questions How did it work in 12.10 ? Through udev ? Something else ? Any other hint ?

• Best Free software for hosting user guides

  Hi All After having to clean up spam from a MediaWiki install for the umpteenth time, despite a recaptcha plugin "preventing" automated signups, I'm wondering if MediaWiki is the right choice as a CMS for hosting user manuals and guides. I've always loved the way wikis can let the guides be edited and commented on collaboratively, but I'm getting tired of dealing with automated vandals. I've disabled edits & signups for now, but as I'm having to go through the pain of cleaning thousands of junk pages, I'm beginning to think I should cut my losses and look for a better alternative. Does anyone know of suitable a FOSS application (preferably PHP / MySQL based) that would be simple for a non-coder (our manual writer) to edit, but that has all the interconnectivity, and searchability of a wiki? Or should I just bite the bullet again and lock the wiki down even further?

• Install squid3 + and eCAP module

  I want to install squid3 and eCAP module on my latest ubuntu. Squid installed well with command i followed these instructions. http://e-healthexpert.org/node/431 sudo apt-get install squid3 but how do i configure it to enable eCAP module ?. I need to give something like --enable-ecap option while installation, which i could not. Then i tried to manually install using http://code.google.com/p/squid-ecap-gzip/source/browse/wiki/Installation.wiki?r=24 but while installing squid3 it gives error. i.e. command sudo make gives some g++ error. • Is there a keybind to minimize all windows, without a toggle?

  I know about the show desktop keybind (default Ctrl+Alt+D), which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without activating "show desktop". I'm on a default install (i.e Gnome, Metacity & Compiz). I've looked through all the locations to configure keybinds, that I know. I've also looked at the default keybind list in the Ubuntu wiki and in the Compiz wiki. (Not to mention, searching here.) I'm interested in knowing where it is available, if not in Gnome/Metacity/Compiz, or some other way to accomplish this with a keybind.

Ubuntu 11.10 I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows, by pressing Alt+F2 and gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce GTX 470" Option "NoLogo" "True" Option "Coolbits" "4" EndSection Started getting these messages, Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap" So I did this, sudo aptitude install gtk2-engines-pixbuf terminal, a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1 a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -q fans 1 Fan on z:0 [0] z:0[fan:0] (Fan 0) a@z:~$ nvidia-settings -a [fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=80 ERROR: Error assigning value 80 to attribute 'GPUCurrentFanSpeed' (z:0[fan:0]) as specified in assignment '[fan:0]/GPUCurrentFanSpeed=80' (Unknown Error).   The Ubuntu Membership Wiki states: Contributions are valued and recognized whether you contribute to artwork, any of the LoCoTeams, documentation, providing support on the forums, the answers tracker, IRC support, bug triage, translation, development and packaging, marketing and advocacy, contributing to the wiki, or anything else. This defines what contributions "count" toward what will be considered valuable when applying for Ubuntu membership. What I want to know is, does my involvement on askubuntu fall under the stipulation "...or anything else"? I'd imagine they don't literally mean anything else, just things they consider to fit the scope of contributing to Ubuntu. So is my help here valuable in contributing? Has anyone ever obtained membership by using their askubuntu contributions as their argument toward membership?

• Vertex Array Object (OpenGL)

  I've just started out with OpenGL I still haven't really understood what Vertex Array Objects are and how they can be employed. If Vertex Buffer Object are used to store vertex data (such as their positions and texture coordinates) and the VAOs only contain status flags, where can they be used? What's their purpose? As far as I understood from the (very incomplete and unclear) GL Wiki, VAOs are used to set the flags/status for every vertex, following the order described in the Element Array Buffer, but the wiki was really ambiguous about it and I'm not really sure about what VAOs really do and how I could employ them.

• How do I get the source code from a Google Code game project?

  I'm trying to get the Hedgewars source code. When I went to the downloads tab, it doesn't specify which is the actual game. I tried downloading it using the SVN Checkout on Tortoise, but it seems like it doesn't work on the browse section of Source. (Hgproject_filesAndroid_buildSDL-android-project) I then proceeded to the wiki but I got stuck at step two because I don't know anything about Mercurial. Some other things I don't know from the wiki is "FreePascal" "Android NDK" and "Tar" files. They are new to me so I am really confused. So my question is, how can I download the source code from Hedge Wars for Android without having to browse the source code inside the source tab?

  Welcome back to the fourth post in this series! Today we will have a look at what Microsoft recommends as a “private cloud design” and what I will make of it. Whilst my own solution is based of the reference architecture, it is quite different indeed! An important thing to know is that, whilst I am using the private cloud as a reference, I am skipping most of the steps in designing a private cloud. If that is why you are here, please read the links at the end of the article and skim through my own content. A private cloud is much more process driven than just building a virtual infrastructure… The architecture of it all… So imagine for a minute that you have unlimited funds to build this lab of yours… You’d want redundancy on all levels and separation of each network where possible! Unfortunately we don’t have that luxury and, as you saw me hinting at in the previous article, our own design will be more limited but still quite capable! Networking From the networking perspective I will not have a fully redundant network, after all, this is but a lab environment! Thanks to Server 2012 I will be able to use bonding on my NIC’s and use LACP to improve the performance on that part. Storage As I mentioned in the previous article a Synology DS1218+ will be used for iSCSI provisioning. This device has 2 NICs on-board which can be bonded in to one 2 Gbps interface giving me a decent throughput and making the disks the most limiting factor in the storage design. Domain controllers and extra infrastructure Server 2012 completely supports running domain controllers virtualized and has no need to actually have a reachable DC when booting… That being said I need a remote access machine to power on the hosts (I have no need for them running 24/7) and a possible System Center VMM 2012 box (although server 2012 is not supported until SP1 :( ). • LXDE keybind "Raise" window not working

• Encourage the use of markup files as documentation in enterprise [closed]

  To make it eaiser to do version control and diff files of documentation, use markup files, such as HTML: html/xhtml, XML: docbook, Wiki: markdown to replace doc/docx. docx is too complex and lengthy. For html, no extra document generation required. Programmers can write html directly and end users / managers can use any web browsers to view the document. For custom XML or Wiki formats, viewers are required to view the document or converters are used to export to pdf/doc. Is such move becoming popular in enterprise context? Why or why not?

• RabbitVCS suddenly stopped working in Nautilus with Ubuntu 11.04

  A while ago I installed RabbitVCS on Ubuntu 11.04. It then all worked pretty well, but since a few weeks (maybe even more than a month) RabbitVCS suddenly disappeared from the Nautilus context menu. I visited this page: http://wiki.rabbitvcs.org/wiki/support/known-issues and saw some points I could try, but none of them worked out to a working version again. Also this issue Rabbit VCS stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 does not describe the solution for me, so I think it might be something else. I have also tried to reinstall RabbitVCS again from the PPA which was recently updated according to this topic, but no luck. I am still on 11.04 (as I don't like the way Ubuntu is going in newer versions at all) and my Nautilus version is 2.32.2.1 . Is there someone who can help with this one?
