  • Razor – Hiding a Section in a Layout

    Layouts in Razor allow you to define placeholders named sections where content pages may insert custom content much like the ContentPlaceHolder available in ASPX master pages. When you define a section in a Razor layout it’s possible to specify if the section must be defined in every content page using the layout or if its definition is optional allowing a page not to provide any content for that section. For the latter case, it’s also possible using the IsSectionDefined method to render default content when a page does not define the section. However if you ever require to hide a given section from all pages based on some runtime condition you might be tempted to conditionally define it in the layout much like in the following code snippet. if(condition) { @RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false) } With this code you’ll hit an error as soon as any content page provides content for the section which makes sense since if a page inherits a layout then it should only define sections that are also defined in it. To workaround this scenario you have a couple of options. Make the given section optional with and move the condition that enables or disables it to every content page. This leads to code duplication and future pages may forget to only define the section based on that same condition. The other option is to conditionally define the section in the layout page using the following hack: @{ if(condition) { @RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false) } else { RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false).WriteTo(TextWriter.Null); } } Hack inspired by a recent stackoverflow question.

  • Why use flash to as content headings? Why not?

    A large number of sites lately which use Flash to replace what would be simple HTML headings (h1, h2, h3). Some of them do it consistently for every header. Why would you do this? What are the pros and cons of this? This seems strange to me and really inefficient, particularly since a page can have dozens of headers. I notice this because I use Flash Block (which temporarily disables Flash), so not everyone may have seen it. Just today I landed here with 4 flash headers. I've seen dozens of such use of Flash this week alone, and I am wondering if this has some benefits.

  • Juju Openstack bundle: Can't launch an instance

    Deployed bundle:~makyo/openstack/2/openstack, on top of 7 physical boxes and 3 virtual ones. After changing vip_iface strings to point to right devices, e.g., br0 instead of eth0, and defining "/mnt/loopback|30G", in Cinder's block-device string, am able to navigate through openstack dashboard, error free. Following http://docs.openstack.org/grizzly/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/running-an-instance.html instructions, attempted to launch cirros 0.3.1 image; however, novalist shows the instance in     I'm about to start development of small purpose build intranet web application for small software vendor. It will be administration console of the server managing licenses for off-the-shelf software installed by users. There will be a few users who need to be able to sign in, issue a batch of license codes, revoke some, renew outdated, resolve issues, etc. Bear in mind that my customer requires Java for this solution. I'm seasoned Java programmer and before I used different frameworks to implement webapps, mainly Apache Struts in the past and Spring MVC recently. I was wondering what else could you recommend for such specific intranet webapp. I looked at using Google Web Toolkit (possibly with SmartGWT) Ext JS for fancy widgets in UI and REST back-end in SpringMVC SpringMVC with JQueryUI Could you please think of any piece of recommendation with regard to the choice I'm going to made?

  • Has anyone been able to convert a site's media content from flash to html5?

    I'm looking to convert a site from Flash based video to HTML5, the current video uses time marks to display slides (kind of like how youtube has ads on their videos). But the difference between Youtube and my site is that it doesn't show up inside the video, the slides are displayed next to the video. Is there any way I can accomplish this with HTML5? Or do I have to use Javascript for this? If this isn't clear enough, please let me know.

    How do I need to format a text file so that it can be read by an SMTP service to send an e-mail that has an attachment? We have a server where we are using II6 SMTP to send mail from a Pickup folder. The goal is to drop a properly formatted text file into Mailroot\Pickup and then the file will be automatically processed and sent to the correct SMTP recipient. For simple files, this works correctly. Here's an example of a simple file that works (domain names changed): From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World! Test Body Of The E-mail When I drop a text file containing the above contents into the Mailroot\Pickup folder, it sends correctly. However, I haven't been able to figure out how to get an attachment to work. I found some material that explained how to encode an SMTP attachment and another tool for simple base64 encoding conversion. Using the information on those pages, I came up with the following text: From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World!   • How do you set up the directory structure for a multilingual site without duplicating content?

    I want to make a website in two languages. I've looked around and settled on the directory option of separating both languages. How do I make it work? Let's say I have the following three files for the landing homepage, the English page and the Spanish page: http://www.domain.com/index.html http://www.domain.com/en/index.html http://www.domain.com/es/index.html Let's also say that /index.html will be in English, with a link to /es/index.html. In turn, /es/index.html will have a link to the English version. Would this be back to /index.html or to /en/index.html. How do I get both English versions (the one at the root and the one in the directory) to actually be the same file in the same directory? I'm new to this, so I'm not using any scripts yet. To me, the obvious solution is to duplicate both English versions and have the one at the root point to files under the /en/ directory, but I'm not a fan of duplication and I've learned that search engines really frown upon that. Anyone point me in the right direction?

    I have searched and could not find any information about it. What is the best approach to storing revisions? I have a website where the user can write a document which can be fairly long (200-300 lines). How do you determine when to make a revision? Is it not a scalable solution to make a new one whenever the save, because that would be useless to the user when the want to look back, and it would require quite a lot of space. You could use time and say for every 15 minute they are working on it there would be a revision, but that would sometimes be nothing or the whole document have completely changed. I could make a diff from the previous revision, and compare by line and look at how many percent of the lines have been changed. What are other doing revisions?

  • Browser language detection & content ranking for new language on the same site.

    I've been reading a lot about it but it's still really hard to make up my mind. My understand is that if your website provide a link to the other language, this should not be an issue for google as long as your links are clear and clean, google will be able to make his way through it. The website was orginaly in french and I added the english version and I'm just worry that english speaker will just leave if the site is not in the correct language, for the home page I just wanted to get the value from the browser and redirect it to /fr/ or /en/ for the first page. (using php this will be very easy) Could you guys have a look at it and tell me what you think about it http://tinyurl.com/bpc5bn9 I don't want to get it wrong and lost my ranking with google. Also the website has good rank on the french side and the english has been online for 2 weeks and only get few visit a day, is that because all the back link refer to /fr/ and google is cleaver enough to decide that they are 2 differantes website and the back link will have to point to /en/ to increase the ranking value? I've set my email client to use plain-text but every time I send a post, Blogger hard wraps it instead of letting the text just flow. I've tried this with different mail clients and gotten the same results. I'm 100% sure that I'm sending plain text each time. Does anyone know how to get Blogger to quit doing this? Sigh. Maybe I'll switch to Wordpress...

  • Making Multilingual J! 1.5 + + Joomfish + VM 1.17 more workable

    I have been working with a multilingual Joomla! 1.5.23 e-commerce website for a client for quite a while and made several customizations. But the client is still not happy he has to adjust content at at least three locations: Joomfish Virtuemart Article Manager Joomfish is nice in the way that it allows you to create multilingual content and copy and paste the source language on the same page, which makes translation work easier but it is annoying in the way you have to edit several custom fields at different locations/ content types. As Joomla! source language content still needs to be created in the article manager first this is the second location the client has to work at. The third location is Virtuemart. Here all the products and product categories are created. And here we added some custom fields as well. Now I was considering upgrading the website to Joomla 1.7 or later on to 1.8. This J! versions have better multilingual support. But I wonder if er can really make the client's life easier. We will still have to copy the source language to a new article and create content in another language. We will still have the issue of content in custom fields that needs to be translated and we will still have to create content. Should I go for another CMS such as Magento or do you think there is a way in a more recent Joomla! version to work with all content in one or max two locations?

The output is as follows: >fetch cpu . However, on the same machine (which is both the node and the master munin server), I can run munin-run cpu, and it prints the results correctly to the command line, like so: user.value 100829130 nice.value 3479880 system.value 13969362 idle.value 664312639 iowait.value 12180168 irq.value 14242 softirq.value 199526 steal.value 0 Looking at the wiki page mentioned above, it looks like it might be a plugin environment problem, but I can't figure out how to fix/change this...     Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post. I tried searching for this issue and all that seemed to come up were questions posted from people who had this issue with their web pages. I couldn't find questions related to this issue from a laypersons perspective. I'm not a developer. I have no domain, nor wish to have one at the time. Rather I'm just a regular person who likes to upload photos to some photo related sites. My uploading process constantly gets interrupted by one of these annoying API errors. I get it at least two times, one when I click the page to upload, and also right after it has uploaded. It also pops up if I go to edit a photo or delete it. This interrupts my browsing experience until I click okay. I just want a fix for the annoying without having to register for a key. I tried before and it required a web domain. I rather not have to create a domain and go through such hoops just to fix this. Is there a solution for this problem that doesn't require registration? Another thing to note: I have used two computers. One has the message pop-up and the other doesn't. What is different about the two computers?

Then I see that I should clear address bar before pasting the new url, which requires selecting existing url, which wipes the new url from PRIMARY clipboard out. What is the best way to put the new url from PRIMARY clipboard to address bar? Is there a shortcut to clear address bar and then to move focus there? ps I know I can use Ctrl-C to put the new url to CLIPBOARD clipboard, but I prefer to use PRIMARY clipboard.

  • The right way to add images to Monogame/Windows

    I'm starting out with MonoGame. For now, I'm only targeting Windows (desktop -- not Windows 8 specifically). I've used a couple of XNA products in the past (raw XNA, FlatRedBall, SilverSprite), so I may have a misunderstanding about how I should add images to my content. How do I add images to my project? Currently, I created a new Monogame project, added a folder called "Content," and added images under there; the only caveat is that I need to set the Copy to Output Directory action to one of the Copy ones. It seems strange, because my "raw" XNA project just last week had a Content project in it (XNA Framework Content Pipeline, according to VS2010), which compiled my images to XNB (I think). It seems like Monogame doesn't use the same content pipeline, but I'm not sure. Edit: My question is not about "how do I get the XNA content pipeline to work with Monogame." My question is "why would I want to use the XNA content pipeline in Monogame?" Because there are (at least) two solutions (that I see today): Add the images to the Monogame project and set the Copy to Output Directory options to copy. Add a XNA content pipeline project and add my images to that instead; reference it from my MOnogame project. Which solution should I use, and why? I currently have a working version with the first option.
