    Hi all, This is a fairly general question. I know a bit of Perl and Python and I am looking to learn programming in more depth so that once I get the hang of it I can start developing applications and then websites. I would like to know of an algorithm (sequence of steps :)) that could describe my approach towards learning programming in general. I have posted small questions on Perl/Python and I have recieved great help from everyone. Note:- I am not in a hurry to learn. I know it takes time and that's fine. Please give any suggestions you think are valid. Also, please don't push me to learn Lisp, Haskell etc - I am a beginner.

  • 1 year to learn as much as possile - How would you plan this time?

    I have been messing around with web development and programming in general for a couple of years now, working in web development agencies and the like. I have now decided that I want to move to more general programming and do this permanently and as a career and have set myself a goal of 1 year to learn as much as I can before I go out and find a 'proper' job as a programmer. Do any programmers out there have any opinions on how this time should be split and what the most important things to focus on will be over the year. The languages I will be focusing my learning on are: c, php, python and go - all of which i have varying degrees of familiarity with. The ultimate goal here is to gain as good as foundation as possible and to be of a good enough level to interview successfully for a decent company.

  • How can I stay focused and motivated on a project?

    I'm working on starting my own software development business, but I've noticed that I have major issues getting projects out by their deadlines, and in general getting them out of the "almost-done" stage. I feel my problem is that I like complex programming too much, and I end up rewriting code to make it cleaner/more efficient/less error prone as a means of putting off more "boring" development. I end up with polished applications at the end, but I spend twice as long on the project as I should have. If I ever want my company to succeed, I need to work on staying focused on what actually needs to be done, so the question is: What techniques do you use to keep yourself focused and motivated on a project, in your career?

  • How do I share common classes between windows forms and web applications using C#?

    In our environment we have multiple ERP servers plus data that are coming from multiple sources. I need to create a development roadmap for the coming years as it is obvious that side applications will be needed for many things. The choice is that the development will occur with Microsoft technologies. This means that I will be building either web apps (MVC, web forms e.t.c) or standard windows forms applications. The thing here is that I will be creating classes that will encapsulate the business logic that I want to apply to the different projects. What I thought so far: 1) Create class libraries dlls containing the required logic 2) Reuse these libs in my apps. But what about the web apps? Should I use the dlls directly or I should encapsulate them in web services and consume the web services in web apps? In general I would like to find out how should I build my strategy.

My prospect has separate investors that will fund the implementation. The prospect wants to know how much I will charge for the implementation so that he knows how much to ask the investors for. Before I can estimate reliably I need to work with the prospect to develop an implementation plan. This planning work will take time that I want to charge for.     I provide technical support for several high schools in Spain and I have been building up a inventory of the schools machines. On the windows only computers I normally run PC Wizard to quickly get a good overview of the machines hardware, software and network settings. Is there an equivalent tool preferable with a GUI and an export option to html or pdf in Ubuntu. I have tried a few options such as: Gnomes gconf-editor hardinfo (GUI) lshw (CLI) I'm just looking for an all in one application that builds a detailed profile of the installed software, hardware and network setting of a particular machine. I have found Sysinfo which is quite good, it displays the most important hardware info and allows you to save it to a text file with a neat GUI. I'm still looking for a more complete solution but it's a good start.

    I'm currently evaluating alternatives to refactor a drivermanagement. In my multitier architecture I have Baseclass DAL.Device //my entity Interfaces BL.IDriver //handles the dataprocessing between application and device BL.IDriverCreator //creates an IDriver from a Device BL.IDriverFactory //handles the driver creation requests Every specialization of Device has a corresponding IDriver implementation and a corresponding IDriverCreator implementation. At the moment the mapping is fix via a type check within the business layer / DriverFactory. That means every new driver needs a) changing code within the DriverFactory and b) referencing the new IDriver implementation / assembly. On a customers point of view that means, every new driver, used or not, needs a complex revalidation of their hardware environment, because it's a critical process. My first inspiration was to use a caliburn micro like nameconvention see Caliburn.Micro: Xaml Made Easy BL.RestDriver BL.RestDriverCreator DAL.RestDevice After receiving the RestDevicewithin the IDriverFactory I can load all driver dlls via reflection and do a namesplitting/comparing (extracting the xx from xxDriverCreator and xxDevice) Another idea would be a custom attribute (which also leads to comparing strings). My question: is that a good approach above layer borders? If not, what would be a good approach?
