  • Scheduled task to open URL

    - by Jeremy Stein
At a certain time each day, I'd like my browser to pop open a tab to a certain URL. My goals: 1. be able to set the URL from the scheduled task 2. use the default browser (rather than hard-coding it) I can't seem to accomplish both of these goals at once. I'll post my partial solutions as answers, but I'm hoping someone will have something better.

  • Recursively find files/directories within a directory

    - by enchilada
I want to use enumeratorAtURL:includingPropertiesForKeys:options:errorHandler: to do this, as I'm coding under Snow Leopard. I know how to use this method. However, as for my purposes it's not adequate to load the contents lazily, I have the following question: How can I create an object hierarchy (of, say, the custom FileOrDirectory class with the standard children, count,isLeaf attributes) from the information I load from the enumeratorAtURL: method? I need to load this data beforehand, and show it in an outline view, for my purposes.

  • May we have Ruby and Rails performance statistics? We're persuading the business to use Rails!

    - by thekingoftruth
We're convincing our Products officer that we want to use JRuby on Rails, and we're having a hard time coming up with some statistics which show that: Coding time is less using Rails vs. say Struts or Zend Framework or what have you. Ruby (and JRuby in particular) performance isn't horrible (anymore). Rails performance isn't bad either. If you can get us some good stats quickly, we might have a chance!

  • Language to learn metaprogramming

    - by Erup
What's the best language (in terms of simplicity, readability and code elegancy) in your opinion, to learn and work with metaprogramming? I think metaprogramming is the "future of coding". Not saying that code will extinct, but we can see this scenario coming on new technologies.

  • Executable directory where application is running from?

    - by JPJedi
I need to get the path (not the executable) where my application is running from: System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory() When I run the above statement with & "/images/image.jpg" on my local machine it works fine but when I install the application on another machine it says it cannot find the file and there is a lot of extra path information some. I just need the directory of where the app is running. I am coding in VB.NET with Visual Studio 2008. Thanks!

  • "session" bean scope in a web application - reliable ?

    - by EugeneP
Can you rely on this scope and be sure that every time 1) a new session starts, the Spring bean will be initialized with default values 2) while session is kept alive, the current object will store its state during session life, will never be lost or corrupted and can always be got with [webappcontext].getBean ?

I've recently started a new project in C#, and, as I was coding some exception throw in a function, I figured out I didn't really know which exception I should use. Here are common exceptions that are often thrown in many programs : ArgumentException ArgumentNullException InvalidOperationException Are there any framework exceptions you often use in your programs ? Which exceptions should every .net programmer know about ? When do you use custom exception ?

  • Visual Studio: Where are global settings stored?

    - by Philipp
Hi, sometimes after logging out and in again, my settings in Tools/Options/Projects and Solutions/VC++ Directories are lost. To investigate the problem I tried to find the file where Visual Studio (2008 Team) stores those settings on disk. (Or is it in the registry?) Can anybody point me to where it is? Thanks a lot!

  • What is the naming convention in Python for variable and function names?

    - by Ray Vega
Coming from a C# background the naming convention for variables and method names are usually either CamelCase or Pascal Case: // C# example string thisIsMyVariable = "a" public void ThisIsMyMethod() In Python, I have seen the above but I have also seen underscores being used: # python example this_is_my_variable = 'a' def this_is_my_function(): Is there a more preferable, definitive coding style for Python?

  • Running a batch file with parameters in python OR F#

    - by Ramy
I searched the site but didn't see anything quite matching what I was looking for. I created a stand alone application that uses a web service I created. To run the client I use: c:/scriptsdirecotry "run-client.bat" param1 param2 param3 param4 how would I go about coding this in python or F#. seems like it should be pretty simple but I haven't seen anything online that quite matches what i'm looking for. Thanks in advance.

  • Would ViewModels fit in the Model View Presenter pattern?

    - by Jonn
Having used ViewModels in MVC, I was wondering if applying the same to the MVP pattern is practical. I only have a few considerations, one being that MVP is already fairly hard to implement (with all the additional coding, not much on the seeming complexity) or that ViewModels already have a slightly similar way of modeling data or entities. Would adding another layer in the form of ViewModels be redundant or is it a logical abstraction that I, as one implementing the MVP pattern, should adhere to?

  • Desiging a AJAX website

    - by Narmatha Balasundaram
What are the things to consider and watch out for when designing a website with AJAX? Must take care of conditions, say timeouts, error handling, for instance? Best practices? What parameters to take care of while designing and coding?
