  • What skills should a developer/tester learn in order to move into a permanent Systems Analysis role?

    I have been with a software services firm for 5 years and have fallen into a "jack of all trades" role, which I am looking to move out of. I've spent about 1 year each in programming (VB/VB.NET), application support, systems analysis, and most recently, software testing, which in my current position is all manual. I've really lost interest in the programming and testing roles; I would prefer a position where I get to work more with people, such as systems analysis. I even got a chance to be a trainer at the same company for a few months, a temporary position which I enjoyed very much. Given that most of my real experience is with software, support, and testing, what knowledge areas and skills should I focus on learning and mastering in order to make myself an attractive candidate for a permanent position as a business/systems analyst?

  • How to test the render speed of my solution in a web browser?

    Ok, I need to test the speed of my solution in a web browser, but I have some problems, there are 2 versions of the web solution, the original one that is on server A and the "fixed" version that is on server B. I have VS2010 Ultimate, so I can make a web and load test on solution B, but I can't load the A solution on my IDE. I was trying to use fiddle2 and jmeter, but they only gave me the times of the request and response of the browsers with the server, I also want the time it takes to the browser to render the whole page. Maybe I'm misusing some of this tools... I don't know if this could be usefull but: Solution A is on VB 6.0 Solution B is on VB.Net Thanks in advance!

  • Arcball 3D camera - how to convert from camera to object coordinates

    I have checked multiple threads before posting, but i havent been able to figure this one out. Ok so i have been following this tutorial, but im not using glm, ive been implementing everything up until now, like lookat etc. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenGL_Programming/Modern_OpenGL_Tutorial_Arcball So i can rotate with the click and drag of the mouse, but when i rotate 90º degrees around Y and then move the mouse upwards or donwwards, it rotates on the wrong axis, this problem is demonstrated on this part of the tutorial An extra trick is converting the rotation axis from camera coordinates to object coordinates. It's useful when the camera and object are placed differently. For instace, if you rotate the object by 90° on the Y axis ("turn its head" to the right), then perform a vertical move with your mouse, you make a rotation on the camera X axis, but it should become a rotation on the Z axis (plane barrel roll) for the object. By converting the axis in object coordinates, the rotation will respect that the user work in camera coordinates (WYSIWYG). To transform from camera to object coordinates, we take the inverse of the MV matrix (from the MVP matrix triplet). What i have to do acording to the tutorial is convert my axis_in_camera_coordinates to object coordinates, and the rotation is done well, but im confused on what matrix i use to do just that. The tutorial talks about converting the axis from camera to object coordinates by using the inverse of the MV. Then it shows these 3 lines of code witch i havent been able to understand. glm::mat3 camera2object = glm::inverse(glm::mat3(transforms[MODE_CAMERA]) * glm::mat3(mesh.object2world)); glm::vec3 axis_in_object_coord = camera2object * axis_in_camera_coord; So what do i aply to my calculated axis?, the inverse of what, i supose the inverse of the model view? So my question is how do you transform camera axis to object axis. Do i apply the inverse of the lookat matrix?   • Checker AI in visual basic not working [on hold]

    I am trying to a make checkers in visual basic with ai. I am using the minimax algorithm (or at least what I understand of it) and it works, except the ai is retarded and plays like it is trying to loose and I tried to switch around the min and the max but the results are IDENTICAL. I am pissed of and have been trying to fix it for over a week now, I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I have 3 years experience of programming (in Java, only about of month of VB experience) and I always am able to solve all my errors on my own so I don't know why I can't get this to work.     I am currently reading CLR via C# ISBN 978-0-7356-2704-8. Whilst quite correctly described by the publisher as a "Deep Dive", this is a book that C# developers with 6-18 months plus experiance ought to read. Certainly any serious Microsoft programming shop ought to have a copy.  For our VB.NET bretheren, a book of this quality is a good excuse to learn C#. (And before you ask, my favourite language of C# and VB.NET is the one that gets me the next contract!) When I started programming 31 years ago I went through IBM 360 Orientation - this gave me an comprehension of what worked best at the machine code level - this is the first book I have found that explains the the working of the Dot Net framework to explain why particular choices are good, This is my first blog post here.   • Why doesn't my texture display with this GLSL shader?

    I am trying to display a DXT1 compressed texture on a quad using a VBO and shaders, but I have been unable to get it working. All I get is a black square. I know my texture is uploaded properly because when I use immediate mode without shaders the texture displays fine but I will include that part just in case. Also, when I change the gl_FragColor to something like vec4 (0.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0) then I get a nice blue quad so I know that my shader is able to set the colour. It appears to be either the texture is not being bound correctly in the shader or the texture coordinates are not being picked up. However, I can't find the error! What am I doing wrong? I am using OpenTK in C# (not xna). I now need to have a MS Word Macro that I can search for a character and then extend the search to another character and extract the details into a vb variable from the first to the last character. Thereafter I need to search for the next occurrence of the first character and repeat the exercise. When all have been processed the last search must inform me that there are no more.   • Have you tried to switch to different kind of language and find a job in a "new language" ?

    I'm a Java programmer(J2EE/JEE), but I'm thinking about switching to C#. Does any of you have been in my position and have switched from Java to C# or C# to Java or C++ to Java, etc. ?? I'm NOT asking about switching between the same kind of languages, for example Java to Groovy/Scala/JRuby, C++ to C, VB to C#, C# to IronRuby/F#/VB.NET. Or if you company was C++, but has moved to Java(you had no choice and I'm about to make a choice). Side question: How hard was it to get a job in a "new language"?
