  When we have code like: function a(){ var x =0; this.add=function(){ alert(x++); } } var test = new a(); test.add(); // alert 0 test.add(); // alert 1 test.add(); // alert 2 How does this work? Doesn't that the value of 'x' in a() should be 'gone' as soon as test = new a() is complete? The stack contains x should also be gone as well, right? Or, does javascript always keep all the stacks ever created in case they will be referenced in future? But that wouldn't be nice, would it...?

  I'm having some trouble understanding the IF clause at the end of this function from Pro JavaScript Design Patterns: function extend(subClass, superClass) { var F = function() {}; F.prototype = superClass.prototype; subClass.prototype = new F(); subClass.prototype.constructor = subClass; subClass.superclass = superClass.prototype; if(superClass.prototype.constructor == Object.prototype.constructor) { superClass.prototype.constructor = superClass; } } The book explains that these lines ensure that the superclass's constructor attribute is correctly set, even if the superclass is the Object class itself. Yet, if I omit those three lines and do the following: function SubClass() {}; extend(SubClass, Object); alert(Object.prototype.constructor == Object); The alert says 'true', which means the superclass's constructor is set correctly even without those last three lines. Under what conditions, then, does this IF statement do something useful? Thanks.

  Hi this is driving me nuts. I believe I asked this exact same question but I can't find it anymore(I used stackoverflow search, google search, manually searched my posts, searched my code). I wanted something that would be like the C# String.Format where you could do something like string format = String.Format("Hi {0}",name); just for javascript of course and one person gave me a simple answer it was not like a jquery plugin or anything but I think you made some json thing or something and it worked and was simple to use. I for the life of me can't find this post.

• Regular Expression for accurate word-count using JavaScript

  I'm trying to put together a regular expression for a JavaScript command that accurately counts the number of words in a textarea. One solution I had found is as follows: document.querySelector("#wordcount").innerHTML = document.querySelector("#editor").value.split(/\b\w+\b/).length -1; But this doesn't count any non-Latin characters (eg: Cyrillic, Hangul, etc); it skips over them completely. Another one I put together: document.querySelector("#wordcount").innerHTML = document.querySelector("#editor").value.split(/\s+/g).length -1; But this doesn't count accurately unless the document ends in a space character. If a space character is appended to the value being counted it counts 1 word even with an empty document. Furthermore, if the document begins with a space character an extraneous word is counted. Is there a regular expression I can put into this command that counts the words accurately, regardless of input method?

  Hi All, I've got a javascript application that sends a large amount of numerical data down the wire. This data is then stored in a database. I am having size issues (too much bandwidth, database getting too big). I am now ready to sacrifice some performance for compression. I was thinking of implementing a base 62 number.toString(62) and parseInt(compressed, 62). This would certainly reduce the size of the data but before I go ahead and do this I thought I would put it to the folks here as I know there must be some outside the box solution I have not considered. The basic specs are: - Compress large number arrays into strings for JSONP transfer (So I think UTF is out) - Be relatively fast, look I'm not expecting same performance as I have now but I also don't want gzip compression either. • HTML, Javascript, PHP and Actionscript all in one Eclipse install (2010)

  I just wanted to poll the community and see which plugins people are currently using to get all of these different technologies running in Eclipse. I saw this thread which mentioned Spket & WPT: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1575617/eclipse-which-plugins-for-html-javascript But I noticed that Spket doesn't seem to have been updated since October of 2009 so I'm wondering if it's still a good tool to use. I'm not sure what would be best for PHP since it seems like some of the tools are disjointed at the moment. For Actionscript I know I can just install the latest Flash Builder plugin and be done. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The jAlert details are given here. Now, I made customized alerts (with title and colors in alert). It is wroking properly on some websites. But on some websites the default CSS is dominating my jQuery CSS, which leads to unexpected alerts (ugly alerts).

  Hopefully this is a pretty simple question! I've got the code working in jQuery to listen for a specific form on a page to be submitted and perform an alert when it is.. I.e.: The form itself doesn't have a name so I am targetting the form within a specific form ID. $("#content form").submit(function() { alert("lorem ipsum dolor?"); }); What would be the syntax for performing this in javascript alone without using jquery? • How can I see included JavaScript sources?

  I am trying to script a web page using GreaseMonkey. (I am using Firebug for help in development.) The page has a small amount of JavaScript code, but that code pulls in other JS files from the site. Are the entire collection of JS files stored somewhere on the client side (i.e. on the filesystem somewhere) so that I can view them? Or better yet, is there a way I can view them in Firebug?   I have seen some answers to this question in previous posts, but no one has given a real working example, just psuedo code. Has anyone ever done this before? Basically, what i have is a variable in javascript (jquery), and i want to use this variable to drive a query (for an overlay window) i am going to run in php. From what i have read you can do this using an ajax call to the same page so it doesnt refresh itself, but i must be missing something because i can't get it working... Any examples out there? I would like to convert the 1277334000000+0100 into the correct number of milliseconds to create the correct date when eval is called after validation.   I need to replace some text that is on the page within the body tag. I am using javascript but have jquery available if needed. I basically need to replace test® (test with the registered trademark) with TEST® or tests® with TESTS® and it could even be test with TEST® or tests with TESTS®. I am able to uppercase them but its not liking to work for me with the ® sign, it wants to put duplicates on ones that already have it. Basically anything on the page that has the word test or tests should be TEST® or TESTS® if it is plural. Any help is appreciated.

  Hi, I have a radioButtonList with 2 items in it. A radiobutton with a "Yes" value and a radionButton with a "No" value. Below that I have a panel which I want made visible when "Yes" radioButton is selected and hidden when "No" is selected.   Im looking for a simple Javascript Library (svg?) that allow me to draw a family tree relationships. I have searched a lot on google found a lot of interesting libraries like Raphaël and its extention Dracula. Google has its own library to make flowcharts too. Unfortunally, every library make a relation between nodes with a sigle line. If A and B has a relation to C, I will obtain 2 line: one from A to C and one from B to C.
