Restrict violation of architecture - asp.net MVP

If we had a defined hierarchy in an application. For ex a 3 - tier architecture, how do we restrict subsequent developers from violating the norms? For ex, in case of MVP (not asp.net MVC) architecture, the presenter should always bind the model and view. This helps in writing proper unit test programs. However, we had instances where people directly imported the model in view and called the functions violating the norms and hence the test cases couldn't be written properly. Is there a way we can restrict which classes are allowed to inherit from a set of classes? I am looking at various possibilities, including adopting a different design pattern, however a new approach should be worth the code change involved.

I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++ with Visual Studio 2008) after a internet explo

Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

Let's take 2 UML class model entities: One represents an actual Order and another represents an Orede Type. Any Order corresponds to one Type. A 2-way-naviglabe many Orders to one Type relation is meant. Order Type instances are, for example, "Request availability", "Request price", "Preorder", "Buy", "Cancel", "Request support", etc. Order Types are to be addable and editable in the resulting application. Should I model Order Type as Class or as Enumeration? From the data perspective I can't see the difference actually.

Have built a small VB.Net app in VS2010. The connection string to the SQL Server is as follows: <connectionStrings> <add name="IWSR_DataDownloadWizard.My.MySettings.sqlConnection" connectionString="Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=SQLServer;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=IWSROL" providerName="System.Data.OleDb" /> </connectionStrings> Within the VS2010 environment AND on my machine, the connection works perfectly, however when I deploy to clients I get an error message of: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I've tried to search the net for solutions, have seen a few instances of people saying to NOT use the Server Name but the IP Address instead (this doesn't work) and some saying to remove the "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1", again this doesn't work. Can anyone suggest a solution please? Further information: Development System is Windows7 using VS2010 Deployment systems are a combination of Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 7 SQL Server is SQL2000 (soon to be SQL2005). TIA

How do I build a filtered_streambuf based on basic_streambuf?

I have a project that requires me to insert a filter into a stream so that outgoing data will be modified according to the filter. After some research, it seems that what I want to do is create a filtered_streambuf like this: template <class StreamBuf class filtered_streambuf: public StreamBuf { ... } And then insert a filtered_streambuf<> into whichever stream I need to be filtered. My problem is that I don't know what invariants I need to maintain while filtering a stream, in order to ensure that Derived classes can work as expected. In particular, I may find I have filtered_streambufs built over other filtered_streambufs. All the various stream inserters, extractors and manipulators work as expected. The trouble is that I just can't seem to work out what the minimal interface is that I need to supply in order to guarantee that an iostream will have what it needs to work correctly. In particular, do I need to fake the movement of the protected pointer variables, or not? Do I need a fake data buffer, or not? Can I just override the public functions, rewriting them in terms of the base streambuf, or is that too simplistic?

Type casting in C++ by detecting the current 'this' object type

My question is related to RTTI in C++ where I'm trying to check if an object belongs to the type hierarchy of another object. The BelongsTo() method checks this. Accessing a Clip Inside Another Clip in a Loaded SWF-File

I'm writing a card game in AS3. The artist I'm working with has produced (in Flash CS4) a single swf-file containing all the card graphics and animations. The structure of the fla working file looks something like this: - Scene - CardGraphics (Movie Clip) - CardFront - CardBack - CardValueImage (Movie Clip) ... In the program I create 52 instances of my Card class, each having a MovieClip instance created from the loaded swf. The idea is to set the frame of the CardValueImage MovieClip to correspond to the Card instance's suit and rank member variables. However, I can't figure out how I access CardValueImage and call gotoAndStop (or whatever method I will need to call). What's the best way to write a maintainable web scraping app?

I wrote a perl script a while ago which logged into my online banking and emailed me my balance and a mini-statement every day. I found it very useful for keeping track of my finances. The only problem is that I wrote it just using perl and curl and it was quite complicated and hard to maintain. After a few instances of my bank changing their webpage I got fed up of debugging it to keep it up to date. So what's the best way of writing such a program in such a way that it's easy to maintain? I'd like to write a nice well engineered version in either Perl or Java which will be easy to update when the bank inevitably fiddle with their web site.

Yesterday, I was designing a Java class which I wanted to be initalized with Lists of various generic types: TheClass(List<String> list) { ... } TheClass(List<OtherType> list) { ... } This will not compile, as the constructors have the same erasure. I just went with factory methods differentiated by their names instead: public static TheClass createWithStrings(List<String> list) public static TheClass createWithOtherTypes(List<OtherType> list) This is less than optimal, as there isn't a single obvious location where all the different options for creating instances are available. I tried to search for better design ideas, but found surprisingly few results. What other patterns exist for designing around this problem?

How to model dependency injection in UML ?

I have a Contract class. The contract is valid 1 Jan 2010 - 31 Dec 2010. It can be in state Active or Passive, depending on which date I ask the instance for it's state. ex. if I ask 4 July 2010, it's in state Active, but if I ask 1 Jan 2011, it's in state Passive. Instances are created using constructor dependency injection, i.e. they are either Active or Passive already when created, null is not allowed as a parameter for the internal state member. One initial/created vertex is drawn in UML. I have two arrows, leading out from the initial vertex, one leading to state Active and the other to state Passive. Is this a correct representation of dependency injection in UML ? Compare TinyMCE and CKeditor for a Wiki

For a custom wiki django-wakawaka, i want to be able to add a WYSIWYG support. TinyMCE is obviously the most popular plugin, used even by Wordpress. But CK-editor seems more feature full. Those who have used either of these or both, which is better and why. Are there some better packages, that I am missing? Is there something that I am missing when I conclude CKeditor is better, by going through them (because it is not as widely used). I want to use it with django and jquery, with multiple instances of WYSIWYG widget per page. Does one offer advantage over the other.

Multiple ASP.Net Controls On One Page

We have created a User Control for ASP.Net. At any one time, a user's profile page could contain between one and infinity of these controls. The Control.ascx file contains quite a bit of javascript. When the control is rendered by .Net to HTML, you notice that it prints the javascript for each control. This was expected. I'd like to reduce the amount of HTML output by the server to increase page load times. Normally, you could just move the javascript to an external file and then you only need one extra HTTP request which will serve for all controls. But what about instances in the javascript where we have something like document.getElementById('<%= txtTextBox.ClientID %'); How would the javascript know which user control work with? Has anyone done something like this, or is the solution staring me in the face?

Spawning a thread in python

I have a series of 'tasks' that I would like to run in separate threads. The tasks are to be performed by separate modules. Each containing the business logic for processing their tasks. The spawnWorker() method will be declared on the Plugin interface and defined in the classes implemented in the various modules. Maybe, there is a better (i.e. Pythonic) way of doing all this?. Hi, I have a stateless session bean and a standalone-java-program acting as a client. The bean method executes just fine when the interface is marked @Remote. However,when I mark that interface with @Local instead of @Remote, I get the following Exception. [java] javax.naming.NamingException: Could not dereference object [Root exception is java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not find InvokerLocator URL at JNDIaddress "chapter1/HelloUserBean/local"; looking up local Proxy from Remote JVM?] But I expected even the latter to work, since it is the same computer that the code executes in. Seeing this behavior, I am assuming that, the Application-Server and the Standalone-Java-Program use different JVM instances and not a single JVM instance and so this client can access only through a remote interface. Is that assumption correct ? Thanks !

And may also yield performance benefits. A specific example $(this) vs this Inside a click event referencing the clicked objects id jQuery $(this).attr("id"); Javascript this.id; Are there any other common practices like this? Where certain Javascript operations could be accomplished easier, without bringing jQuery into the mix. Or is this a rare case? (of a jQuery "shortcut" actually requiring more code) EDIT : While I appreciate the answers regarding jQuery vs. plain javascript performance, I am actually looking for much more quantitative answers. While using jQuery, instances where one would actually be better off (readability/compactness) to use plain javascript instead of using $(). So: John, Mark, James, Tyler and Joe are in a table 1( called round 1) The user selects the action that say to "move to next round" and those same instances that were chosen are now also in the table for "round 2". HOWTO: implement a jQuery version of ASP.Net MVC "Strongly Typed Partial Views"

I am working on a multi-page assessment form where the questions/responses are database driven. Currently I the basic system working with Html.BeginForm via standard ASP.Net MVC. At this point in time, the key to the whole system is the 'Strongly Typed Partial Views'. When the question/response is read from the database, the response type determines which derived model is created and added to the collection. The main view it iterates through the collection and uses the 'Strongly Typed Partial Views' system of ASP.Net MVC to determine which view to render the correct type of response (radio button, drop down, or text box). I would like to change this process from a Html.BeginForm to Ajax.BeginForm. The problem is I don't have a clue as to how to implement the dynamic creation of the question/response in the JavaScript/jQuery world. Any thoughts and/or suggestions?
