    Hello. A bit of background. We run a small in house data center: about 20 virtualized servers (Debian Lenny, Windows 2003, Windows xp and Windows 7 machines), in a Citrix Xen pool running on 3 host servers and a SAN, plus a few standalone machines running legacy or specialized software that can't be vritualized. There is a big push everywhere now to move to cloud so we considering Ubuntu Cloud. I was wondering what are the pros / cons of running virtualized pool vs cloud to run all those machines? Thank you

  • Should I persist images on EBS or S3 ??

    Hi; I am migrating my Java,Tomcat, Mysql server to AWS EC2. I have already attached EBS volume for storing Mysql data. In my web application people may upload images. So I should persist them. There are 2 alternatives in my mind. 1- Save uploaded images to EBS volume. 2- Use S3 service. The followings are my notes, please be skeptic about them, as my expertise is not on servers, but software development. EBS plus: S3 storage is more expensive. (0.15 $/Gb 0.1$/Gb) S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may influence my web server's performance negatively. Is this true? Does Serving images affect server performance notably? For S3 my server will not be responsible for serving statics. S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may result I/O cost, probably it will be minor. EBS plus: People say EBS is faster. S3 plus: People say S3 is more safe for persistence. EBS plus: No need to learn API, it is straight forward to save the images to EBS volume. Namely I can not decide, will be happy if you guide.   • How do I make Home / End keys behave Windows/Linux like in Terminal.app on Mac OS on Mac Pro laptop?

    Hello. I was wondering if somebody knows how to use home/end keys behave in a Windows/ Linux fashion. What I mean is that when I press Apple + Left (Home combo on a mac book pro laptop) it should go to the beginning of the line, and Apple + Right to the end of the line. Right now they change focus to the top of the scroll history. Drives me crazy. Home / End keys behave as expected in TextMate and such but not in terminal, which makes me think it's that app specific. I found some page saying that I need to remap key bindings but I can't do that on every mac i touch. So is there another shorcut in Mac I can use or how do I make Home/End keys behave as expected? Thank you

  • How will I support 100,000 requests an hour?!

    I know this question is a little strange but I got lucky with an idea and I need some numbers to use for when I try to make a deal with a company. I'm wondering how much it'll cost me to run a site that's heavy on PHP and gets between 70,000 and 100,000 requests an hour on something like Rackspace's Cloud Servers. I have no idea how many servers I need or how much RAM each one should have. There will be a decent number of images on the site (probably something like 10,000 in the first couple weeks) and the site runs on about 2,500 lines of PHP code. I figure I should sign up for a CDN of some kind, although CDN In A Box is all I've heard of and I'm not sure it's necessary for a site that's already on a cloud platform. I've obviously never done anything like this before so I'm just looking to get an estimation of what I need for this massive site... Also, I use a database and I was wondering how that works - would I dedicate one of the cloud servers to running the database or would I need to put the database into each of the cloud servers?     Just want to know everyone's experience and take on managing users/authentication on a multi-node db2 cluster with users groups. I have 17 apps in production (project based company, only 2 online apps), and some 30 users with 7 groups. prodsel - group that has select privilege on all tables produpdt - update group on selective tables (as required by the apps) proddel - delete prodins - insert permissions for the group Now what my company does is when an app uses certain user (called app1user), and needs select and insert privilege on a table, they 1. grant select and insert for prodsel, prodins respectively 2. add the user under those two groups... now this creates one to many relationship between user and privileges, and this app1user also gets select on other tables granted for the prodsel group. I know this is wrong. Before I explain, I need to know how this is done elsewhere. Please share your experiences, even if you use other Databases that uses OS level authentication.

I am given to understand the thing is quite easy to setup - but I have no clue of how it actually works. Can I upload disc images and install just any software as on any other virtual machine or is there any significant difference? Any help appreciated!

    We have a decent-sized server estate: several ProLiants, plus IBM BladeCentre and SANs running a VMWare environment. Due to an imminent premises move, we're not going to have enough space for a server room, so I've been looking at moving everything out to a colo. My boss is more keen on the idea of cloud-hosting everything, which would include a couple of high-traffic websites (about 9m pageviews/month), our Exchange sever (about a million clean emails sent/received monthly), as well as file/print/AD/all the ususal stuff. This doesn;t sound like a good idea to me, but I'm new to the ways of the cloud. Can anyone offer any advice?

    Is there anyway to backup an image of a rackspace cloud server? something thats easy to do instead of running scripts backing up each db and fs. This seems like something easy to do on EC2 and impossible to do on rackspace cloud. Also i know rightscale can work with rackspace cloud only for ubuntu images. Is it possible to do this with rightscale easily if its not yet available directly in rackspacecloud?

I hear several terms and I'm not quite sure how they are related (e.g. streaming, broadcasting, ingesting, etc.) Is there a blog post or book that explains: How it all works in a high-level view (the workflow) The architecture (i.e. I capture content using my camera and want to display it real-time to an audience. I imagine that the content will be transferred to a server, but how does that server transmit the information to several users simultaneously?) Thanks!

    I'm using the following Amazon EC2 resources in the US East (Virginia) region: 1 Running Instance 1 Elastic IP 2 EBS Volumes 100 EBS Snapshots 1 Key Pair 2 Security Groups 5 My Own AMIs (customized based on my application stack) My instance is based on Linux distribution (CentOS) and my AMIs are S3-backed. Both EBS volumes are mounted on this running instance. We're planning to migrate our deployment to US-West region. Because Amazon EC2 resources are not shared across regions, my questions are: What are all the factors that I need to consider in advance? What are all the recommended & different ways of migrating each EC2 resources from one region to the other? Are there any hidden risks involved during and/or after the migration? Experts ideas/suggestions/recommendations on this are highly appreciated.

  • My profile won't load!

    I can get into my Windows Server 2008 R2 primary domain controller via remote desktop just fine. It's my boss who's got his profile messed up. When he tries to log in, he gets the message The User Profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded. I've looked for his profile everywhere and cannot find it to delete or fix it. System Properties Advanced User Profiles shows my profile, the Administrator profile and the Default Profile. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList only shows my profile and the Administrator profile. Everything that I've found on the internets points me to those locations. Help a brotha out?

  • I need a few minutes of dedicated server a week, but not for hosting, just to convert ogg etc.

    I'm completely happy with my webhosting, it's just that I need to do one little thing they won't allow, and that's run an instance of Sox to convert about 30 mp3s to ogg files, in various directories, a couple of times a week, to be done automatically in response to the detection of the upload of an mp3. Probably looking at a minute of server time over the whole week. I've had unhelpful suggestions on other forums like "why not leave your home PC on 24 hours a day and then use all your isp bandwidth to do this", which doesn't work for me. I know that I can host files on, say, Amazon S3, but is there something similar for my needs? All it would need to do would be: wget/ftp the mp3 files, convert them to ogg, ftp the files back to my hosting. Of course, all this wouldn't be needed if there was such a thing as a compiled binary of Sox (or any mp3ogg converter) for Centos which I could upload without needing root access, but I've given up asking that one, but always open to suggestions!

    We're going to test the rackspace cloud next week to see how it's working with our web app. It's a LAMP environment with a lot of MySQL databases. How do I choose the "right" server size? On Rackspace I can choose slices with the memory of 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 etc. Right now we don't have a lot of traffic (approx. 1000 visitors/day) but I thought the whole "cloud" idea was to not be limited and auto scale. Update: What I'm looking for is now a specification of what I need. I know it's too complex. I'm looking for examples, case studies etc. It would be interesting to hear something like "Yes we're serving 10 000 daily requests without spikes on a LAMP stack with only one slice on with 2 GB RAM".

We have a very old application based on Omnis7 that needs to create and read/write files on drive C: when running as a restricted user. In Windows XP to give this permission is quite trivial using cacls. cacls C:\ /G Everyone:(C) The equivalent icacls in Windows 7 will not work. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(M) I have also tried the following. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(F) icacls C:\ /Grant Domain\user:(F) trying to create file with a restricted user gives this C:\>copy nul text.txt Access is denied. 0 file(s) copied. After applying the icacls permissions above the result changes to this. C:\>copy nul text.txt A required privilege is not held by the client. 0 file(s) copied. Is this an issue with the way I am applying the permissions? Or is Window 7 being extremely strict?

    hi there we are studying the virtualization option to reduce our datacenter cost, and this research was assigned to me. we looked into alternatives and we almost reached a conclusion that PowerVM is the only option to virtualize pSeries servers. we found no signs of cloud support explicitly mentioned in any document, however there was the mention of CloudBurst. from the videos we watched and the documents we read, it seems that CloudBurst is more oriented towards Application Servers (WebSphere Software). but our environment is not relying only on WebSphere. we have some banking applications, Oracle Databases and MQ/Broaker. the question is: 1- can we virtualize the existing applications (all running AIX) on a cloud running on top of some of the existing servers? (given that we do the sizing properly) 2- is PowerVM to run on top of CloudBurst? 3- if the above solution is applicable, is this some sort of HA solution (since the VM will run on top of multiple physical boxes, while the same physical box will run multiple live images) thanks for your help

    I am looking for a best hosting service for my website. My website is a PHP MySQl driven site which hase got site scrapping for more than 10 websites and near about 8-10 API pursing and some about 150 mb dat file reading(from local hard drive), and also one rss pursing,Live graph from other sites, geo map from Google,Map api from Google and so on. one widget which real-time result for any one who chose the same. so my question is which is best option for me. actually I am considering softlayer cloud as they are pretty cheap and more facilities than rackspace. another option is a dedicated server which has 2 single core processor, 4GB ram and 250GB sata II. with 100 mbps uplink. so please tell me which will be the best option?? I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.
