PosterCatID) { PosterContext ctx = new PosterContext(); IQueryable<Poster> query = ctx.Posters; if (PosterCatID.HasValue && PosterCatID > 0) { query = query.Where(p=>p.PosterCategoryID==PosterCatID); } return query; } This is a very simple method that returns information about posters related to the PosterCatID passed to it.I bind the value from the query string to the PosterCatID parameter at run time.This is all possible due to the QueryStringAttribute class that lives inside the System.Web.ModelBinding and gets the value of the query string variable id.5) I run my application and then click on the "Midfilders" link. Have a look at the picture below to see the results. In the Site.css file I added some new CSS rules to make everything more presentable. .posters-featured { width:840px; background-color:#efefef;}.posters-featured a:link, a:visited, a:active, a:hover { color: #000033; }.posters-featured a:hover { background-color: #85c465; } 6) I run the application again and this time I do not choose any category, I simply navigate to the PosterList.aspx page. i am receiving the follwing error when i am invoking a custom object "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." Following is the scenario when i am getting the error i am invoking a method in a dll dynamically. Load an assembly CreateInstance.... calling MethodInfo.Invoke() passing int, string as a parameter for my method is working fine = No exceptions are thrown. But if I try and pass a one of my own custom class objects as a parameter, then I get an ArgumentException exception, and it is not either an ArgumentOutOfRangeException or ArgumentNullException. "Object of type 'customObject' cannot be converted to type 'customObject'." I am doing this in a web application. The class file containing the method is in a different proj . also the custom object is a sepearte class in the same file. there is no such thing called a static aseembly in my code. I am trying to invoke a webmethod dynamically. this webmethod is having the customObject type as an input parameter. So when i invoke the webmethod i am dynamically creating the proxy assembly and all. From the same assembly i am trying to create an instance of the cusotm object assinging the values to its properties and then passing this object as a parameter and invoking the method. everything is dynamic and nothing is created static.. :( add reference is not used. Synchronizing ASP.NET MVC action methods with ReaderWriterLockSlim

Any obvious issues/problems/gotchas with synchronizing access (in an ASP.NET MVC blogging engine) to a shared object model (NHibernate, but it could be anything) at the Controller/Action level via ReaderWriterLockSlim? (Assume the object model is very large and expensive to build per-request, so we need to share it among requests.) Here's how a typical "Read Post" action would look. Enter the read lock, do some work, exit the read lock. public ActionResult ReadPost(int id) { // ReaderWriterLockSlim allows multiple concurrent writes; this method // only blocks in the unlikely event that some other client is currently // writing to the model, which would only happen if a comment were being // submitted or a new post were being saved. _lock.EnterReadLock(); try { // Access the model, fetch the post with specificied id // Pseudocode, etc. Post p = TheObjectModel.GetPostByID(id); ActionResult ar = View(p); return ar; } finally { // Under all code paths, we must release the read lock _lock.ExitReadLock(); } } Meanwhile, if a user submits a comment or an author authors a new post, they're going to need write access to the model, which is done roughly like so: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult SaveComment(/* some posted data */) { // try/finally omitted for brevity _lock.EnterWriteLock(); // Save the comment to the DB, update the model to include the comment, etc. _lock.ExitWriteLock(); } Of course, this could also be done by tagging those action methods with some sort of "synchronized" attribute... but however you do it, my question is is this a bad idea? ps. ReaderWriterLockSlim is optimized for multiple concurrent reads, and only blocks if the write lock is held. Since writes are so infrequent (1000s or 10,000s or 100,000s of reads for every 1 write), and since they're of such a short duration, the effect is that the model is synchronized , and almost nobody ever locks, and if they do, it's not for very long.

ASP.Net MVC: Change Routes dynamically

Hi, usually, when I look at a ASP.Net MVC application, the Route table gets configured at startup and is not touched ever after. I have a couple of questions on that but they are closely related to each other: Is it possible to change the route table at runtime? How would/should I avoid threading issues? Is there maybe a better way to provide a dynamic URL? I know that IDs etc. can appear in the URL but can't see how this could be applicable in what I want to achieve. How can I avoid that, even though I have the default controller/action route defined, that default route doesn't work for a specific combination, e.g. the "Post" action on the "Comments" controller is not available through the default route? Background: Comment Spammers usually grab the posting URL from the website and then don't bother to go through the website anymore to do their automated spamming. If I regularly modify my post URL to some random one, spammers would have to go back to the site and find the correct post URL to try spamming. If that URL changes constantly I'd think that that could make the spammers' work more tedious, which should usually mean that they give up on the affected URL.

Hi there, I have an asp.net page, with couple of Divs, some of these div's get the image path from database and show the image in a smaller version (thumbnail). and as soon as user click on thumbnail, I use ajax Modal popup to show the full size image, what I need to have is to have a progree image(gif), on every thumbnail image while loading the asp.net page for the first time, I konw that it is possible to use UpadePanel, but I need the actual working code,or any other way to achieve this, Thanks in advance

Turning off ASP.Net WebForms authentication for one sub-directory

I have a large enterprise application containing both WebForms and MVC pages. It has existing authentication and authorisation settings that I don't want to change. The WebForms authentication is configured in the web.config: <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms blah... blah... blah /> </authentication> <authorization> <deny users="?" /> </authorization> Fairly standard so far. I have a REST service that is part of this big application and I want to use HTTP authentication instead for this one service. So, when a user attempts to get JSON data from the REST service it returns an HTTP 401 status and a WWW-Authenticate header. If they respond with a correctly formed HTTP Authorization response it lets them in. The problem is that WebForms overrides this at a low level - if you return 401 (Unauthorised) it overrides that with a 302 (redirection to login page). That's fine in the browser but useless for a REST service. I want to turn off the authentication setting in the web.config: <location path="rest"> <system.web> <authentication mode="None" /> <authorization><allow users="?" /></authorization> </system.web> </location> The authorisation bit works fine, but when I try to change the authentication I get an exception: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. I'm configuring this at application level though - it's in the root web.config How do I override the authentication so that all of the rest of the site uses WebForms authentication and this one directory uses none? This is similar to another question: 401 response code for json requests with ASP.NET MVC, but I'm not looking for the same solution - I don't want to just remove the WebForms authentication and add new custom code globally, there's far to much risk and work involved. I want to change just the one directory in configuration.

Suggestions In Porting ASP.NET to MVC.NET - Is storing SiteConfiguration in Cache RESTful?

I've been tasked with porting/refactoring a Web Application Platform that we have from ASP.NET to MVC.NET. Ideally I could use all the existing platform's configurations to determine the properties of the site that is presented. Is it RESTful to keep a SiteConfiguration object which contains all of our various page configuration data in the System.Web.Caching.Cache? There are a lot of settings that need to be loaded when the user acceses our site so it's inefficient for each user to have to load the same settings every time they access. Some data the SiteConfiguration object contains is as follows and it determines what Master Page / site configuration / style / UserControls are available to the client, public string SiteTheme { get; set; } public string Region { private get; set; } public string DateFormat { get; set; } public string NumberFormat { get; set; } public int WrapperType { private get; set; } public string LabelFileName { get; set; } public LabelFile LabelFile { get; set; } // the following two are the heavy ones // PageConfiguration contains lots of configuration data for each panel on the page public IList<PageConfiguration> Pages { get; set; } // This contains all the configurations for the factsheets we produce public List<ConfiguredFactsheet> ConfiguredFactsheets { get; set; } I was thinking of having a URL structure like this: www.MySite1.com/PageTemplate/UserControl/ the domain determines the SiteConfiguration object that is created, where MySite1.com is SiteId = 1, MySite2.com is SiteId = 2. (and in turn, style, configurations for various pages, etc.) PageTemplate is the View that will be rendered and simply defines a layout for where I'm going to inject the UserControls Can somebody please tell me if I'm completely missing the RESTful point here? I'd like to refactor the platform into MVC because it's better to work in but I want to do it right but with a minimum of reinventing-the-wheel because otherwise it won't get approval. Any suggestions otherwise? Thanks

hi guys, i'm totally new to the asp.net mvc stack and i was wondering what happened to the simple Page object and the Request ServerVariables object? basically what i wanted to do is to pull out the client's pc ip address. but i fail to understand how the current MVC structure has changed all of this. as far as i can understand, most of the variable object has been replaced by the HttpRequest variants? anybody care to share some resources? really a sea of stuff to learn in the asp.net mvc world :) thanks.

Using RouteExistingFiles to block access to existing files even if no route exists

In ASP.net MVC 2, I can use routes.RouteExistingFiles = true; to send all requests through the routing system, even if they exist on the file system. Usually, this ends up hitting the "{controller}/{action}/{id}" route and throws an exception as the controller cannot be found. I do not want to use that route though (I have only a few URLs and they are specifically mapped), yet I would still like to prevent access to the file system. Basically I want to Whitelist pages using IgnoreRoute. Is there a built-in way to do this? My current approach is to still have the "{controller}/{action}/{id}" route and generate a 404 when this is hit, but I'm just wondering if something is built-in already?

Why does asp.net mvc form submits itself on button clicks when javascript function error?

hi guys, i'm new to the asp.net mvc, and while working on this, i used very basic asp.net mvc stuff like beginform, etc. i used a lot of jquery codes this round for client side validation, ajax data retrieval, and other gui works. and i used a combinations of html inputs buttons, etc and the asp.net mvc type of controls. what i noticed is that whenever i click on a button control, which sometimes are tied to either jquery oclick events, when there's a javascript error, the page will just go on and submit. why is this happening and what am i missing here? my bad for the dumb questions.. thanks

allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' error when publishing from VS2010 (but only after a previous

I can run my Asp.Net MVC 2 application without an issue on my local computer. Just Run / Debug. But if I have already built it, I can't publish it! I have to clean the solution and publish it again. I know this is not system critical, but it's really annoying. "One Click Publish" is not "Clean solution and then One click publish" The exact error is as follows: Error 11 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. I suspect it's something to do with the Web.Config in the Views folder, but then why only after I build once previously. And just to note, the app works fine once published.

ASP.NET binding object to Request in asp.net mvc

I've created a object that I'd like to have accessible from wherever the request-object is accessible, and to "die" with the request, more or less like how you always in a mvc-application has access to the RouteData-collection. Especially it's important that I have access to this object in the execution of action-filters. And also there need to be created a new object of my class whenever a new request is made to the page (the object needs to be request-safe, ie. only one request modifies that one object). Any thoughts about how to achieve this?

Can I bind multiple forms to a single model using the default model binder?

I have a complex page with several forms on it. The page is divided into sections, and each section has a continue button on it. The page is bound to a pageViewModel, each section addresses a different set of properties on the model. The continue button makes an ajax call to the controller, and the model binder binds it appropriately to the appropriate sections of the model. The section is refreshed appropriately. Finally, I would like to have a save button at the bottom of the page that takes all the forms, and binds all of the forms to the model. The model, at this point has all of the properties filled out, and can be processed accordingly. Can I accomplish this by some ASP MVC magic?

How to get more detail from an exception?

I have a .NET 4.0 web application which implements an error handler within the Application_Error event of Global.asax. When an exception occurs this intercepts it and sends me an email including a variety of information like the logged in user, the page the error occurred on, the contents of the session etc. This is all great but there is some fundamental detail missing which I seem unable to locate. Classic ASP and MVC side-by-side, different projects?

I've tried asking this in a few different ways, but let's give it another shot (as I've yet to receive an answer and this is driving me nuts!) I have a very large classic ASP 3.0 application (~350K lines) that I want to start migrating to ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to keep the old ASP files in a separate project from the MVC stuff. Ideas on how to debug these? Should I just dump the files in the same folder and create two different projects ( a WAP and an MVC app) that reference the relevant files and folders required by each? This should work, but does anyone have a better idea? I need the ability to migrate small parts of the application individually as this will probably take a year or two to complete.
