  • What usability issues have you had with VS2010?

    - by makerofthings7
A few of my friends have noticed some quirks with vs2010... notably the Undo/Redo feature doesn't seem to work reliably... often messing up the code beyond comprehension. What other quirks have you seen? Update for vs2010 users (non SP1) Please post your bugs at Microsoft connect, and a corresponding link here so we can up vote them as needed. https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio?wa=wsignin1.0 Update for VS2010 SP1 Users You can download the SP1 for all versions of Visual Studio here. Just be aware that there are compatibility issues mentioned in the readme. Also some people have reported issues with this release. • Why Android for new (micro) consoles?

    - by Klaim
There are a lot of new (micro) consoles with Android inside coming soon or already there (OUYA for example). My question is: why use Android and not another OS as base for these consoles? I assume that there are pragmatic answers to this but I can't see any clear killer feature. For example, one can assume that any stable Linux distribution would work (like Valve seem to think). Android is primarily targetted at mobile platforms which mean it is built around the idea of being interrupted which goes against a lot of what console devs needs in new hardware - but is not killing Android as a platform for gamedev either as it's just a constraint. Why not another OS? What's the Android killer features that make micro-console builder using it instead of Linux or anything else?

  • Apple Gets the Message About Centralized Notifications on Mobile

    - by ultan o'broin
Yep, looks like iOS5 introduces a centralized messaging system: the Notification Center. Wonder where they got that idea from? Seriously, way to go though; this matches and probably betters what I really like about Android’s notifications system. I’ll have to check it out myself, though. Application UX's own research confirmed the centralized approach as something users wanted in research last year. This feature will really help the iOS in the enterprise user market too. Up to now, iOS is pretty dismal in the notifications space IMO.

  • Please help me to improve Re-Sharper

    - by TATWORTH
Re-Sharper is an excellent aid to producing good code in either C# or VB.NET. Recently through using Resharper and StyleCop, I have found three area where ReSharper needs to be improved. Please log into the YouTrack at http://youtrack.jetbrains.net and vote for the following: RSRP-268868 Improvement to removal of redundant else and invert if optimisations for enhanced stylecop compliance. When Resharper removes a redundant else, there needs to be a blank line added. Currently there is no provision to specify this. Please vote for this! RSRP-272286 Resharper Feature Request to move initialisation to static constructor Currently ReSharper offers moving initialisation of of non-static variable to a constructor. Why not offer the same for a static constructor?  Please vote for this! RSRP-272285 Expansion of Switch Statement by Resharper Currently ReSharper will fill an empty switch statement based upon an enumeration but will not add missing enumeration values to such a switch statement.   Can't code withoutCoding assistance, smart code editing and code completion for C# and VB.NET

  • How can I implement full disk encryption for a disk containing Ubuntu with plausible deniability?

    - by Rupert
I would like to have a disk that: has Ubuntu installed is fully encrypted is setup in such a way as to make denial of the existence of the Ubuntu install plausible Truecrypt provides the last two features but only for Windows: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=sys-encryption-supported-os The alternate installer for Ubuntu provides the first two features but not the last. I imagine that plausible deniability would be achieved by, at least: Having two installs of Ubuntu and 2 passphrases (or keyfiles) which would unencrypt each one. Moving any unencrypted data (such as /boot) onto a USB stick Are there any programs out there which support this feature set for Ubuntu?

  • DIY Wirelessly Charged LED Lanterns

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this year we shared a clever project that turned LEDs, batteries, and PVC into mini, waterproof, and virtually indestructible lanterns. This remake of the project makes the units rechargeable. Our favorite part about this project–the upgrade to an older project and the introduction of wireless charging aside–is the fact that the maker behind it is 15 years old. It’s great to see younger people taking an interest in tinkering! • Suggest windows webhost provider for following requirements.

    - by op_amp
Hi, We have a asp.net MVC3 based web app which uses SQL SERVER 2008 for database. Also, we have a client side desktop application which also uses SQL SERVER 2008. While developing the system, we are able to Sync tables using SQL SERVER Replication feature. Now, we want to host our site on a webserver but we are clueless about it. If anyone of you have a similar system working then please suggest a cheap but reliable webhost which supports Replication. Initially there will be approximately 10 or less clients who will perform replication 2 or 3 times a day. The size of the database will be less than 4GB for sure.

  • How to remove text from file icons ?

    - by Jesse
I am fairly new to Ubuntu (Linux). I noticed when creating a .java file or .py gives me an icon, however when I start writing code it overrides the thumbnail into showing text. Is there a way to disable this silly feature ? When I installed Linux Mint on the VM I noticed I was able to accomplish this task by unchecking "Show text in icon". I know they use Namo as their file manager. I read this thread and it did not work. How to stop Nautilus from creating thumbnails of specific file types?

  • Can GJK be used with the same "direction finding method" every time?

    - by the_Seppi
In my deliberations on GJK (after watching http://mollyrocket.com/849) I came up with the idea that it ins not neccessary to use different methods for getting the new direction in the doSimplex function. E.g. if the point A is closest to the origin, the video author uses the negative position vector AO as the direction in which the next point is searched. If an edge (with A as an endpoint) is closest, he creates a normal vector to this edge, lying in the plane the edge and AO form. If a face is the feature closest to the origin, he uses even another method (which I can't recite from memory right now) However, while thinking about the implementation of GJK in my current came, I noticed that the negative direction vector of the newest simplex point would always make a good direction vector. Of course, the next vertex found by the support function could form a simplex that less likely encases the origin, but I assume it would still work. Since I'm currently experiencing problems with my (yet unfinished) implementation, I wanted to ask whether this method of forming the direction vector is usable or not.

  • How to be anonymous on IPV6 protocol by not using MAC address in EUI-64?

    - by iugamarian
The IPV6 protocol has a feature called "Extended Unique Identifier" or EUI-64 witch in short uses the MAC address of the network card when choosing an IPV6 Adress. Proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30CnqRK0GHE&NR=1 at 7:36 video time. If you want to be anonymous on the internet (so that nobody can find you when you download something, etc.) you need this EUI-64 to be bipassed in order for the MAC address not to be discovered by harmful third parties on the internet and for privacy. How do you avoid EUI-64 MAC address usage in IPV6 selection in Ubuntu? Also for DHCP IPV6?

  • Why do I have Unity and GNOME Classic running at the same time?

    - by jerowin
I've recently updated and found that Unity shows on the gnome-classic/fallback desktop. Is this a new feature (which I doubt to be), or a bug? If it is a bug, tell me how to disable Unity because it interferes with the lower panel (i.e. I bring out Trash instead of showing the desktop when I try pressing the "Show desktop" button when the panel is not in focus). I don't encounter this problem in gnome-classic (No effects). Don't judge me. I like pokemon!

  • Windows Communication Foundation 4 - ISBN - Initial Comments

    - by TATWORTH
Windows Communication Foundation 4 - ISBN 978-0-7356-4556-1 is one of the Microsoft Step-By-Step books. I will be studying this book over the comming weeks. What I have seen so far impresses me. One very practical item that more books of the type should have was the "Finding your best starting point". There is one feature about this book that I hope Microsoft Press will provide on more books and that is to also provide the book electronically via Safari. Included in this is getting the book as a PDF!

  • Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour?

    - by Carnotaurus
I have been doing a little thinking about inheritance vs. realization vs. composition. I am not about to post the whole detail here. So I was wondering, when are not talking about supporting unit testing: Why does interface-based programming seem to focus upon the grouping of common behaviour, e.g., IPettable (for an animal), IEditable (for a user control), ISubmitable (for a form), etc. Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour when we could pragmatically group not so much on behaviour but on commonsense physical similarities which could have nothing to do with behaviour? It is not that there is some limiting feature within OOP; so how come?

  • How can I learn to write idiomatic C++?

    - by yati sagade
I am a computer science student, and as a result, I was taught C++ as a better version of C with classes. I end up trying to reinvent the wheel whenever a solution to a complex problem is needed, only to find sometime after that, some language feature or some standard library routine could potentially have done that for me. I'm all comfortable with my char* and *(int*)(someVoidPointer) idioms, but recently, after making a (minor) contribution to an open-source project, I feel that is not how one's supposed to think when writing C++ code. It's much different than C is. Considering that I know objected-oriented programming fairly well, and I am okay with a steep learning curve, what would you suggest for me to get my mind on the C++ track when I'm coding C++?

  • Do you need expensive servers and fancy hosting in order to make a multiplayer game?

    - by ThePlan
I've finished working on an RPG and it would seem so much more fun to make it multiplayer. SFML has a networking feature, I figured it's possible but then again, never in my life have I even tried something basic about networking, in fact my knowledge of it is very limited. What would it take to make a multiplayer game resource-wise? I'm not talking about an MMO, more like a co-op type of game. Do I need mountains of cash to pay for hosting and servers and many many things to make one?

  • How to CURL and avoid timeout death (Twitter Down) [migrated]

    - by David
Twitter is down right now, and one of my site's home pages relies on getting data from Twitter (relies is the problem - it should be more of an accessory feature, as it just shows follow count from its feed). Here's the code in question: function socials_Twitter_GetFollowerCount($username) { $method = function () use ($username) { return file_get_contents('https://api.twitter.com/1/users/show.json?screen_name='.$username.'&include_entities=true'); }; $json = cache('bmdtwitter', 3600, $method, false); $json = json_decode($json, true); return intval($json['followers_count']); } What is a good way to make it so if Twitter is down (or not responsive for some reasonable amount of time), our site doesn't appear to be down (I think the timeout maybe defaulting to 30-60 seconds or more).

  • Feasible to send marketing emails as an image?

    - by Anonymous -
Is it feasible to send marketing emails entirely as images - apart from a link at the top, giving the option for the recipient to view the email online (in their browser) and one at the footer to unsubscribe from our mailing list? Anyone who's coded a html email template before knows how much of a pain it is to end up with the final design that displays 'properly' (rarely does it display the same in all clients) and doesn't break. I understand there's the possibility of people simply ignoring the email altogether should their email clients be set not to automatically download images, but many of our email primarily feature images anyway. Thoughts?

  • Verb+Noun Parsers and Old School Visual Novels [duplicate]

    - by user38943
This question already has an answer here: How should I parse user input in a text adventure game? 6 answers Hi I'm working on a simple old school visual novel engine in Lua. Basically I have most of the code set up besides one important feature. The Text Parser. Lets get into how words are generally structured. In the screenshot I input the command "my wish is for you to die" --How would a human understand this? my = noun/object wish = verb is = connective_equator similar to = for = connective_object (for all objects of ..) you = noun/object to = connective_action similar to do die = verb --the computer can then parse this and understand it like this (pseudo example) my = user you = get_current_label() you = "Lost Coatl" wish = user_command user_command = for all_objects of "Lost Coatl" do die() end execute user_command() What other ways do videogames use text parsers, what would be the simplest way for a newbie coder such as myself?

  • Feedback/bug tracking system for an alpha/beta phase website? [on hold]

    - by randomguy
I'm developing a website and it's closing onto a private alpha/beta phase. It will be exposed to a small selected group of individuals who will provide a fair amount of feedback. What options do I have for this feedback system? I would certainly like to make it collaborative (excluding email). I could mock up a really simple message board, but would rather use my time elsewhere. The feedback will mainly consist of feature suggestions and bug reports. Edit: Actually, would prefer if it's a free hosted service.
