• Using subdomains or directories for main categories?

  I have a website which references places to travel to in the world. Those places are (of course) grouped by countries. Here is an example of an actual URL of my website: http://awespot.org/country/105/iceland I am wondering if it would be better, in terms of SEO, to have the countries separated in subdomains: http://iceland.awespot.org/ I know subdomains are considered by Google as different websites, so I am considering the 2 options: separating would mean also separating the pagerank and benefits of links to the website but separating would enable me to create a "web" or related websites (all related to travel and all) that link and benefit to each other I am only asking about SEO here, I know there are other questions raised by this possibility (user experience, administration... even password completion by web browsers)

• Does the Ubuntu One sync work?

  I have been on this for several hours now, trying to get a simple second folder to sync with my (paid) account. I cannot tell you how many times I removed all devices, removed stored passwords, killed all processes of u1, logged out and back in online...and still, the tick in the file browser (Synchronize this folder) is loading and loading and loading. Also, I have logged out, rebooted countless times. And this is after me somehow managing to get the u1 preferences to finally "connect" again. I have also checked the status of your services, and none are close to what I am experiencing. And I have checked the suggested related questions above! So please, just confirm whether it is a problem on my side, or a problem on your side.

• Getting rid of getting stuck often [closed]

  I have been working with C# and .NET for around 2-3 years. But, still i get stuck too often. My project includes few simple websites(asp.net) in the early parts and then a desktop application for cotton transaction management(wpf). And right now, I am building a price compare website (asp.net MVC). Along the lines, I have read quite few books on C# and .NET, but still I get stuck very often. What pisses me is that the problems I get stuck in aren't very typical or hard. You can get a better idea by visiting my questions page on SO. After looking at my question lists, do you also feel that my basis or knowledge as a programmer are weak ? If so, How can i find a remedy to this problem ? Interviewer: "Not the actual number just an estimate" I actually started to stumble my way through it, when I stopped and questioned what it had to do with anything about the job. • Sprites as Actors

  Hello, I'm not experienced in GameDev questions, but as a programmer. In the language Scala, you can have scalable multi-tasking with Actors, very stable, as I hear. You can even habe hundreds of thousands of them running at once without a problem. So I thought, maybe you can use these as a base class for 2D-Sprites, to break out of the game-loop thing that requires to go through all the sprites and move them. They'd basically move themselves, event-driven. Would that make sense for a game? Having it multitasked like that? After all, it will run on the JVM, though that should not be much of a problem nowadays.

• AWR Performance Report and Read by Other Session Waits

  For the questions regarding "read by other session" and its relation to "db file sequential/scattered read", the logic is like this: When a "db file sequential/scattered read" is done, the blocks are either already in the cache or on the disk.  Since any operation on blocks is done in the cache and since and the issue is "read by other session" I will relate to the case the blocks are on the disk. Process A is reading the needed block from the disk to the cache.  During that time, if process B (and C and others) need the same block, it will wait on "read by other session".  A and B can be threads of the same process running in parallel or unrelated processes.  For example two processes doing full table scan on mdp_matrix etc. Solutions for that can be lowering the number of processes competing on the same blocks, increasing PCTFREE.  If it is a full table scan, maybe an index is missing that can result in less blocks being read from the cache and so on.

• Proper way to create and work with a subdomain?

  My site got effected by Panda, and I am trying to see if making a subdomain would work. The site is comehike.com, and I created a subdomain which is currently empty at hiking.comehike.com I have a directory /outdoors that has some high quality hand-written articles. I want to put those into the new subdomain to see what would happen. My questions are: Should I just copy and paste the files for those pages into the new subdomain's folder, and just change all the links in all my pages from the original domain to the new subdomain? Should I just do a 301 redirect to the new subdomain? Since test.site.com and www.site.com are different domains, will the new page have to start from scratch in terms of Pagerank, and its rankings in the SERPs?

• Would learning any (linguistic) language imparticular further your programming career?

  It seems apparent that English is the dominant international language for programming (in the West, at least!) based on previous P.SE questions. Or maybe not, given that a highly upvoted comment correctly points out that asking a question like that on a predominantly English site will skew the results. This question is about whether there is a benefit in learning a foreign language for software development. For example, do the Chinese have completely different software tools, langugages, technologies etc? How about Japanese, Russian, and other non-latin based languages? Am I/are we missing an entire world of software development languages, tools and so on that only exist in these other languages? Or do people that know these languages still learn and program using the tools and languages we all know and love?

• Object Oriented programming on 8-bit MCU Case Study

  I see that there's a lot of questions related to OO Programming here. I'm actually trying to find a specific resource related to embedded OO approaches for an 8 bit MCU. Several years back (maybe 6) I was looking for material related to Object Oriented programming for resource constrained 8051 microprocessors. I found an article/website with a case history of a design group that used a very small RAM part, and implemented many Object based constructs during their C design and development. I believe it was an 8051. The project was a success, and managed to stay inside the very small ROM/RAM they had available. I'm attempting to find it again, but Google can't locate it. The article was well written, and recommended a "mixed" approach using C methods for inheritance and encapsulation - if I recall correctly. Can anyone help me locate this article?

• XML: Multiple roots + text content outside the root. Does anyone do it?

  I have another one of those "is it done in XML" questions (my last one about xml comments hasn't been answered if anyone has a good explanation) I was just wondering if anyone, anywhere would: Use multiple root elements in an XML document Put text content outside of a root element W3C discourages these practices, Javascript's DOMParser doesn't even allow these cases, and I can't think of one sane reason to do either of these things. However, I know how bizarre some implementations of XML have been, so I wouldn't be surprised. Does anyone have any real world examples where this would be done? I will also accept an answer that specifies if other mainstream parsers allow doing either of these.

  I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. • How much to charge Ruby on Rails Website [closed]

  I figured it be appropriate to ask this question on webmasters, over the stackoverflow site seeing as there are similar questions here. I am freelancing for a client in the Boston area, who has the html/css templates for their site made by another web designer. They are basically looking for someone to set up the template, and then make the backend so that a user can purchase music on their site (they are musicians). I am wondering then what would be an appropriate amount to charge them to develop such a system, I am a student, and this would be my 3rd Ruby on Rails project, but probably at least the 20 web design project I have been hired to do and I have other programming knowledge, Python, C, etc. I am thinking of suggesting that they pay 1000usd to set up such a system, but I don't know if this is appropriate. To me it seems justifiable given my experience, and the low end of RoR developers I have seen charging 25usd/hr all the way up to 150usd/hr. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Software installed on root partition or on home partition

  I am planning to install some big softwares such as Matlab (4GB), Mathematica (4GB) on my Ubuntu partitions. I was wondering if I installed them on my home partition, when I reinstall Ubuntu without touching the home partition, will the softwares still be runnable after reinstallation? what are the advantage and disadvantages of installing softwares on root partition and of on home partition? with your answer to the previous questions, what are some reasonable plans for the sizes of root partition and of home partition? Note that I would like to learn programming in C, C++, Java, Python, Lisp, databases under both Ubuntu and Windows, and no games. My laptop has around 230 GB, where I plan to install both Windows and Ubuntu, and reserve 40 GB for Ubuntu (three partitions: swap, root and home), 110 GB for NTFS partition shared between the two OSes, 70 GB for Windows OS partition, and 10 GB that can be added to any of the above partitions. • How can I select an appropriate licensing/obfuscation system for .NET?

  I saw someone suggesting .NET Reactor once as a good obfuscator. I went to their website to check it out and saw they have a product called IntelliLock which is advertised as a pretty robust licensing system which has code protection/obfuscation built in. With that said, I tried to contact them and ask them a few questions regarding the product, but have not had any response. This is kind of a red flag for me. However, it seems like there is some user base for this product whom are satisfied. What .NET licensing system(s) with .NET code protection/obfuscation are you using? What are its pros & cons that you have encountered? Are there things I should be looking for or looking to avoid when evaluating these systems?

• How should modules access data outside their scope?

  I run into this same problem quite often. First, I create a namespace and then add modules to this namespace. Then issue I always run into is how best to initialize the application? Naturally, each module has its own startup procedure so should this data(not code in some cases, just a list of items to run) stay with the module? Or should there be a startup procedure in the global namespace which has the startup data for ALL the modules. Which is the more robust way of organizing this situation? Should some things be made centralized or should there be strict adherence to modules encapsulating everything about themselves? Though this is a general architecture questions, Javascript centric answers would be really appreciated!

• Are certification courses worth it?

  I'm planning on getting certification in Database Development for SQL Server (MSTC - 70-433). I'm a junior level report writer at a new job and the company is offering to pay the majority, if not all, of training course fees. The course is five days. I noticed that MS has a self-paced training kit (book) that I could use. I'm wondering if this would be a better option because it will allow me to go as quick as possible. I've also heard about video training sessions (Lynda.com) but they seem to go at slow pace. My questions are: What should I expect at a certification course? Is it hands-on training? Small classes with personal feedback or not? Would I be better off learning at my own pace using the training kit? (I'd rather this not turn into a certifications are pointless discussion..)

• UML Class Diagram: Abstract or Interface?

  I am modeling a class diagram and have spotted an opportunity to simplify it slightly. What I want to know is, would this it be better to implement an abstract class or an interface? The scenario is this, I have the classes: Artist Genre Album Song All of which share the methods getName, setName, and getCount (playcount that is). Would it be best to create an abstract 'Music' class with the aforementioned abstract methods, or should I create an interface, since the classes that implement the interface have to include all of the interface's methods (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).
