• Memory read/write access efficiency

  I've heard conflicting information from different sources, and I'm not really sure which one to believe. As such, I'll post what I understand and ask for corrections. Let's say I want to use a 2D matrix. There are three ways that I can do this (at least that I know of). 1: int i; char **matrix; matrix = malloc(50 * sizeof(char *)); for(i = 0; i < 50; i++) matrix[i] = malloc(50); 2: int i; int rowSize = 50; int pointerSize = 50 * sizeof(char *); int dataSize = 50 * 50; char **matrix; matrix = malloc(dataSize + pointerSize); char *pData = matrix + pointerSize - rowSize; for(i = 0; i < 50; i++) { pData += rowSize; matrix[i] = pData; } 3: //instead of accessing matrix[i][j] here, we would access matrix[i * 50 + j] char *matrix = malloc(50 * 50); In terms of memory usage, my understanding is that 3 is the most efficient, 2 is next, and 1 is least efficient, for the reasons below: 3: There is only one pointer and one allocation, and therefore, minimal overhead. 2: Once again, there is only one allocation, but there are now 51 pointers. This means there is 50 * sizeof(char *) more overhead. 1: There are 51 allocations and 51 pointers, causing the most overhead of all options. In terms of performance, once again my understanding is that 3 is the most efficient, 2 is next, and 1 is least efficient. Reasons being: 3: Only one memory access is needed. We will have to do a multiplication and an addition as opposed to two additions (as in the case of a pointer to a pointer), but memory access is slow enough that this doesn't matter. 2: We need two memory accesses; once to get a char *, and then to the appropriate char. Only two additions are performed here (once to get to the correct char * pointer from the original memory location, and once to get to the correct char variable from wherever the char * points to), so multiplication (which is slower than addition) is not required. However, on modern CPUs, multiplication is faster than memory access, so this point is moot. 1: Same issues as 2, but now the memory isn't contiguous. This causes cache misses and extra page table lookups, making it the least efficient of the lot. First and foremost: Is this correct? Second: Is there an option 4 that I am missing that would be even more efficient?

• What are the benefits of Android way of "saving memory" - explicitly passing Context objects everywhere?

  Turned out, this question is not easy to formulate for me, but let's try. In Android, pretty much any UI object depends on a Context, and has defined lifetime. It also can destroy and recreate UI objects and even whole application process at any time, and so on. This makes coding asynchronous operations correctly not straightforward. (and sometimes very cumbersome) But I never have seen a real explanation, why it's done that way? There are other OSes, including mobile OSes (iOS, for example), that don't do such things. So, what are the wins of Android way (Activities & Contexts)? Does that allow Android applications to use much less RAM, or maybe there are other benefits?

• Could it be more efficient for systems in general to do away with Stacks and just use Heap for memory management?

  It seems to me that everything that can be done with a stack can be done with the heap, but not everything that can be done with the heap can be done with the stack. Is that correct? Then for simplicity's sake, and even if we do lose a little amount of performance with certain workloads, couldn't it be better to just go with one standard (ie, the heap)? Think of the trade-off between modularity and performance. I know that isn't the best way to describe this scenario, but in general it seems that simplicity of understanding and design could be a better option even if there is a potential for better performance.

  does java 6 generate thread dump in addition to heap dump (java_pid14941.hprof) this is what happened to one of my applications. java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded Dumping heap to java_pid14941.hprof ... I did find ava_pid14941.hprof in working directory, but didn't find any file which contains thread dump. I need to know what all the threads were doing when I got this OutOfMemory error. Is there any configuration option which will generate thread dump in addition to heap dump on out of memory exception?

• How to sanely configure security policy in Tomcat 6

  I'm using Tomcat 6.0.24, as packaged for Ubuntu Karmic. The default security policy of Ubuntu's Tomcat package is pretty stringent, but appears straightforward. In /var/lib/tomcat6/conf/policy.d, there are a variety of files that establish default policy. Worth noting at the start: I've not changed the stock tomcat install at all -- no new jars into its common lib directory(ies), no server.xml changes, etc. Putting the .war file in the webapps directory is the only deployment action. the web application I'm deploying fails with thousands of access denials under this default policy (as reported to the log thanks to the -Djava.security.debug="access,stack,failure" system property). turning off the security manager entirely results in no errors whatsoever, and proper app functionality What I'd like to do is add an application-specific security policy file to the policy.d directory, which seems to be the recommended practice. What's interesting is that: it doesn't exist in this context the fact that the file doesn't exist ends up throwing a security exception, rather than java.io.File.exists() simply returning false (although I suppose that's just a matter of the semantics of the read permission). Another workaround (besides just disabling the security manager in tomcat) is to add an open-ended permission to my policy file: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; I presume this is functionally equivalent to turning off the security manager. I suppose I must be getting the codeBase declaration in my grants subtly wrong, but I'm not seeing it at the moment.

• Coding solution to WAR installation error (Websphere Portal 6.0) ?

  I have a Websphere Portal application containing several portlets for which I'm currently working on some changes. A week ago, the WAR file produced by Rational Application Developer could be installed on the Portal server with no problems. Yesterday I made some seemingly minor changes to two JSP files and their associated "pagecode" Java files, and attempting to update the WAR on the server (using the Portal Administration web interface) now produces an error message. The WAR upload works, and the system shows me the correct list of portlets in the WAR file, but clicking "Finish" gives me a page with the error message "EJPAQ1319E: Cannot install the selected WAR file. View Details". Explanation: A portlet application containing legacy portlets can only be updated with another portlet application that contains legacy portlets. The same is true for standard portlet applications. User Response: Modify the portlet.xml of the application such that it matches the original API type, standard or legacy and try again. However, the "portlet.xml" file has not changed in about a month, and I've done several WAR updates for this application in that time with no problems. The problem seems to be caused by the code changes I did yesterday, but I have no clue why a few lines of code would do this. Any ideas?

• Android edtftpj/PRo SFTP heap worker problem

  Hi I am using edtftpj-pro3.1 trial copy in my android app to make SFTP connection with the server. After few connections with the server with 5-6 file transfers, my app is crashing with following exception. Is it causing the problem or what could be the problem?? I tried setParallelMode(false) in SSHFTPClient, but it is not working.   My app works on 1.5 emulator and 1.5 device. When i try to start it on 1.6 emulator, it produces strange exceptions (doesn't even start). I don't have any 1.6 device to try this app if it works on a real device. I get some warnings in Eclipse ( warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. This class was probably produced by a broken compiler.) and get cant rid of them (i think they come from some apache jars that i need to make http multipart posts). Is it possible that this jars are cause for my exceptions in 1.6 or is it something else?   I'm trying to test that I'm throwing an exception when appropriate. However, when I add that test to a testSuite, I get a red bar Unit test failure reported on the exception. One more thing... it works in the testSuite, if it's the first test in the suite. Actually, I'm doing two of these tests and just figured out that if I make them the first two tests in the suite, all is good, but I get this failure if a "regular" test precedes it. So I have a work-around, but no real answer. Any ideas?   This is driving me up the wall. I have checked and rechecked spelling and paths. I have tried just about every combination of paths, including relative, absolute, and full http paths. I continue to get the following error when trying to load a Java applet: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: AppletClient.class at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2ClassLoader.loadCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: AppletClient.class The HTML used to load the applet: <applet width="100" height="100" archive="applet/myapplet.jar, applet/applet_dependency.jar" code="AppletClient.class"> <param value="blahblah" name="username"> <param value="false" name="codebase_lookup"> </applet> The applet is in a relative directory, "applet", from the path of the current page. I have unzipped the jar file and can see AppletClient.class. Also, in the source of the project, it is spelled that way (casing and all). I have tried with/without the parameters. I have changed the names of the archive jars in the applet include tag just to see if I get a different error for bad file names (same error). I have manually done GETs on the jars to make sure the server is responding to the requests (it is). I have tried with and without the codebase tag, with all different varieties of paths (start getting bad "magic number" errors on those). I know that this error sometimes pops up when a dependency fails to load, so it can be misleading, but all dependencies are present, accounted for, and are fetchable via manual GETs. Between each and every attempt I always clear my cache in FireFox. These problems are reproduced in IE8 and Chrome as well. Per my Java Console from the browser, I am running Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20. This is from the same machine that I develop the applet on, which runs fine via Eclipse. Finally, I kicked on Fiddler2, and I don't see a single request for the jar files anywhere The host site is running from my Visual Studio debugger, so it's running on localhost. But I see the requests for all the other resources on Fiddler. Just... no Jars. ANYWHERE. I clear the log, cleared my browser cache, and did a ctrl-R refresh. And still, not a single Jar request on the Fiddler log. I even did a delayed write (with JS) of the applet tag after the page loaded, once all the Fiddler activity slowed down. The element gets written to the document (and I can see the 100x100 Java error window), but not a single request shows up on Fiddler. Any suggestions, before I go crawl into the corner and cry myself to sleep? • android app crashes if keyboard was shown

  I have an activity that I force keyboard to appears using, InputMethodManager inputMethodManager=(InputMethodManager)getSystemService(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE); inputMethodManager.toggleSoftInput(InputMethodManager.SHOW_FORCED, 0); keyboard appears properly and also obscured when needed. Problem is when I finish the activity, app crashes. If the activity never shows keyboard or shows it without start editing text, it is finished with no errors but if you just write one single character or more, app will crash.   I'm a long time Ubuntu user, but I haven't been following the community for the last several versions. I just did fresh default minimal amd64 install of Oneiric and I need a 32-bit JRE for a particular application. I last did this on 10.10, so I am not familiar with the multiarch stuff. Instead of installing ia32-libs, I read a bit and tried: aptitude install default-jre-headless:i386 But that just got me: The following NEW packages will be installed: default-jre-headless{b} openjdk-6-jre-headless{ab} The following packages are RECOMMENDED but will NOT be installed: icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea-6-jre-jamvm 0 packages upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 27.3 MB of archives. After unpacking 82.1 MB will be used.
