  • How to stop a MFC/win32 control re-painting

    - by John
    I have a CRichEditCtrl, and an algorithm works on its contents in-place, iterating through the contents and making changes. This seems to cause it to re-paaint every time, which causes flickering and a noticeable time to complete the operation, especially if the control starts scrolling. I wondered if there's a neat way for me to stop it repainting for a period. It's actually a custom subclass of CRichEditCtrl in use so I was thinking something like: void MyCustomEditCtrl::DoAlgorithm() { enableRepaint(false); ... //to the actual work ... enableRepaint(true); } What's the neatest approach? A custom on-paint handler which does nothing when an operation is in progress? Or can repainting actually be disabled?

  • Using JQuery to Style form elements

    - by John
    Hi, I've seen jquery used to change a form select drop down box in to a 'pretty' drop down list widget. I can't remember where I saw this but does anyone have any links or example code which show examples of how to use jquery to style form elements? I'd prefer it if it was code rather than a built in plug in. Thanks

  • Best way to handle storing (possibly NULL) char * in a std::string

    - by John
    class MyClass { public: void setVar(const char *str); private: std::string mStr; int maxLength; //we only store string up to this length }; What's the best approach to implement setVar when the external code is quite likely to pass in NULL for an empty string (and cannot be changed)? I currently do something a bit like: void MyClass::setVar(const char *str) { mStr.assign(str ? str : "",maxLength); } But it seems kind of messy. ideas?

  • Java execution details in System.out

    - by John
    As I remember there is a magic command line option in Java that turn on writing of operations that are currently executed to console. The output was looked like byte code. I do not mean -verbose, because it prints only class loading, while this option outputs information like memory allocation etc.

  • C# Reflection StackTrack get value

    - by John
    I'm making pretty heavy use of reflection in my current project to greatly simplify communication between my controllers and the wcf services. What I want to do now is to obtain a value from the Session within an object that has no direct access to HttpSessionStateBase (IE: Not a controller). For example, a ViewModel. I could pass it in or pass a reference to it etc. but that is not optimal in my situation. Since everything comes from a Controller at some point in my scenario I can do the following to walk the sack to the controller where the call originated, pretty simple stuff: var trace = new System.Diagnostics.StackTrace(); foreach (var frame in trace.GetFrames()) { var type = frame.GetMethod().DeclaringType; var prop = type.GetProperty("Session"); if(prop != null) { // not sure about this part... var value = prop.GetValue(type, null); break; } } The trouble here is that I can't seem to work out how to get the "instance" of the controller or the Session property so that I can read from it.

  • Can the Browser 'Forward' Button be Set from HTML?

    - by John C
    Example: At the bottom of the StackOver Questions page are a bunch of page numbers (1,2,3...), enclosed in a set of prev and next buttons. Clicking next repeatedly will bring me to, say page 5, at which point I will have: The page's prev button will be set to 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions?page=4' The Back button on my Browser will have the same value. The page's next button will be set to 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions?page=6' The Forward button on my Browser - won't be set to anything. Obviously, if I hit the Back button on the Browser, then Forward will have a value, pointing to the URL for page 5 - but not otherwise. Is there any way, from HTML (plus Javascript), to set the value of the Browser's Forward button? Or is this one of those things that HTML is simply forbidden to do?

  • Joining two mysql_fetch_arrays

    - by John Harbert
    I am trying to piece two queries together. Below is the code Im using. However the table is splitting up the data. How can I remedy this? Or what better solutions are there? while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { echo "<tr id='centered' >"; echo "<td class='leftalign'>" . $row['Quarter_Name'] . "</td>"; echo "<td>" . $row['Quarterly_yield'] . "</td>"; echo "<td>" . $row['Quarterly_yield'] . "</td>"; echo "<td>" . $row['Quarterly_yield'] . "</td>"; } while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result8)) { echo "<td>" . $row['Quarterly_yield'] . "</td>"; }

  • Extending struts 2 "property" data tag

    - by John B.
    Hi, We are currently developing a project with Struts2. We have a module on which we display a large amount of data on read-only fields from a group of beans via the "property" Struts 2 data tag (i.e. <s:property value="aBeanProperty" /) on a jsp file. In some cases most of the fields might come empty, so a blank is being displayed on screen. Our customer is now requesting us to display default string (i.e. "N/A") whenever a property comes empty, so that it is displayed in place of the blank spaces currently shown. We are looking for a way to achieve this in a clean and maintainable way. The 'property' tag comes with a 'default' attribute on which one can define a default value in cases when the accessed property comes as null. However, most of our properties are empty strings, therefore it does not work in our case. Another solution we are thinking of is to define a base class for all of our beans, and define a util method which will validate if a string is null or empty and then return the default value. Then we would call this method from each bean getter. And yes this would be tiresome and kind of ugly :), therefore we are holding out on this one in case of a better solution. Now, we have in mind a solution which we think would be the best but have not had luck on how implement it. We are planning on extending the 'property' tag some way, defining a new 'default' attribute so that besides working on null properties, it also do so on empty strings ("", " ", etc). Therefore we would only need to replace the original s:property tag with our new custom tag, and the desired result would be achieved without touching java code. Do you have an idea on how to do this? Also, any other clever solution (maybe some sort of design pattern?) on how to default the values of a large amount of property beans are welcome too! (Or maybe, even there might be some tag that does this already in Struts2??) Thanks in advance.

  • What's the best way to stop multiple instances of a Windows app being launched?

    - by John
    Many Windows apps (like Skype or MSN for instance) don't let you start multiple instances, rather trying to run it a 2nd time just leaves the existing version running. Is this typically done in some simple way - the start-menu shortcut is a 'wrapper' app around the main app - or is there some registry magic you can do to delegate the problem to Windows itself? Specifically dealing with Win32 here (unmanaged C++) but happy to hear more general solutions as long as they are workable on Windows XP or alter.

  • boost::function & boost::lambda - call site invocation & accessing _1 and _2 as the type

    - by John Dibling
    Sorry for the confusing title. Let me explain via code: #include <string> #include <boost\function.hpp> #include <boost\lambda\lambda.hpp> #include <iostream> int main() { using namespace boost::lambda; boost::function<std::string(std::string, std::string)> f = _1.append(_2); std::string s = f("Hello", "There"); std::cout << s; return 0; } I'm trying to use function to create a function that uses the labda expressions to create a new return value, and invoke that function at the call site, s = f("Hello", "There"); When I compile this, I get: 1>------ Build started: Project: hacks, Configuration: Debug x64 ------ 1>Compiling... 1>main.cpp 1>.\main.cpp(11) : error C2039: 'append' : is not a member of 'boost::lambda::lambda_functor<T>' 1> with 1> [ 1> T=boost::lambda::placeholder<1> 1> ] Using MSVC 9. My fundamental understanding of function and lambdas may be lacking. The tutorials and docs did not help so far this morning. How do I do what I'm trying to do?

  • rails: self-referential association

    - by john
    hi, My needs are very simple: I have a Tip table to receive comments and have comments to receive comments, too. To retrieve each comment that is stored in the same table (comments), I created another key for the comments on comments: "inverse_comments". I tried to use one comments table by using self-referntial association. Some resources seem to bring more than one table into the piture which are diffent from my needs. So I came up whth the following modeling for comments: class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :tip belongs_to :user has_many :mycomments, :through => :inverse_comments, :source => :comment end Apparently something is missing here but I cannot figure it out. Could some one enlighten me on this: what changes I need to do to make the model work? thanks.

  • Do Distributed Version Control Systems promote poor backup habits?

    - by John
    In a DVCS, each developer has an entire repository on their workstation, to which they can commit all their changes. Then they can merge their repo with someone else's, or clone it, or whatever (as I understand it, I'm not a DVCS user). To me that flags a side-effect, of being more vulnerable to forgetting to backup. In a traditional centralised system, both you as a developer and the people in charge know that if you commit something, it's held on a central server which can have decent backup solutions in place. But using a DVCS, it seems you only have to push your work to a server when you feel like sharing it. It's all very well you have the repo locally so you can work on your feature branch for a month without bothering anyone, but it means (I think) that checking in your code to the repo is not enough, you have to remember to do regular pushes to a backed-up server. It also means, doesn't it, that a team lead can't see all those nice SVN commit emails to keep a rough idea what's going on in the code-base? Is any of this a real issue?

    Have I any chance to serialize meta (any format, so I can store it in DB)? var obj1 = {}; var obj2 = {}; obj1.link = obj2; obj2.link = obj1; var meta = [obj1, obj2]; As I understand the problem is that JSON serialize object`s links to objects.

  • Looking for a jquery plugin to serialize a form to an object

    - by John
    I'm looking for a jQuery function or plugin that serializes form inputs to an object using the naming convention for deep-serialization supported by param() in jQuery 1.4: <form> <input name="a[b]" value="1"/> <input name="a[c]" value="2"/> <input name="d[]" value="3"/> <input name="d[]" value="4"/> <input name="d[2][e]" value="5"/> </form> $('form').serializeObject(); // { a: { b:1,c:2 }, d: [3,4,{ e:5 }] } Prototype's Form.serialize method can do exactly this. What's the jQuery equivalent? I found this plugin but it doesn't follow this naming convention.
