• WCF RIA Services v1.0 Timeouts

  I have a RIA service methods which return quite a large amount of (binary) data to my silverlight application. The methods themselves (database access etc) complete quickly, but since I upgraded to v1.0 from the RC2 I've been experiencing timeouts, even when I limit the data returned to the smallest objects. Debug shows the method returning, then 20-30 seconds later the silverlight "method complete" event will fire. There is not enough data to cause that much lag. Could anyone suggest why this might be? I've been unable to find any breaking changes documentation specific to the RC2 = 1.0 upgrade. Trying to eliminate any other possible causes also, but this is literally a case of worked before the install, doesn't work now! (also upgraded silverlight 4 tools for vs).

• Linux time sample based profiler.

  short version: Is there a good time based sampling profiler for Linux? long version: I generally use OProfile to optimize my applications. I recently found a shortcoming that has me wondering. The problem was a tight loop spawning c++filt to demangle a c++ name. I only stumbled upon the code by accident while chasing down another bottleneck. The OProfile didn't show anything unusual about the code so I almost ignored it but my code sense told me to optimize the call and see what happened. I changed the popen of c++filt to abi::__cxa_demangle. The runtime went from more than a minute to a little over a second. About a x60 speed up. Is there a way I could have configured OProfile to flag the popen call? As the profile data sits now OProfile thinks the bottle neck was the heap and std::string calls (which BTW once optimized dropped the runtime to less than a second, more than x2 speed up). Here is my OProfile configuration: $ sudo opcontrol --status Daemon not running Event 0: CPU_CLK_UNHALTED:90000:0:1:1 Separate options: library vmlinux file: none Image filter: /path/to/excutable Call-graph depth: 7 Buffer size: 65536 Is there another profiler for Linux that could have found the bottleneck? I suspect the issue is that OProfile only logs its samples to the currently running process. I'd like it to always log its samples to the process I'm profiling. So if the process is currently switched out (blocking on IO or a popen call) OProfile would just place its sample at the blocked call. If I can't fix this, OProfile will only be useful when the executable is pushing near 100% CPU. It can't help with executables that that have inefficient blocking calls.

• Mysql SET NAMES UTF8 - how to get rid of?

  In a very busy PHP script we have a call at the beginning to "Set names utf8" which is setting the character set in which mysql should interpret and send the data back from the server to the client. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-applications.html I want to get rid of it so I set default-character-set=utf8 In our server ini file. (see link above) The setting seems to be working since the relevant server parameters are : 'character_set_client', 'utf8' 'character_set_connection', 'utf8' 'character_set_database', 'latin1' 'character_set_filesystem', 'binary' 'character_set_results', 'utf8' 'character_set_server', 'latin1' 'character_set_system', 'utf8' But after this change and commenting out set names utf8 call still the data starts to come out garbled. Please advise....

• Why is floating point byte swapping different from integer byte swapping?

  I have a binary file of doubles that I need to load using C++. However, my problem is that it was written in big-endian format but the fstream operator will then read the number wrong because my machine is little-endian. It seems like a simple problem to resolve for integers, but for doubles and floats the solutions I have found won't work. How can I (or should I) fix this? • Using LinqSql, stored procedure returns datatype image problem

  Hello! I´ve got a problem when using LINQ to execute a stored procedure and return its values. One of the column that the stored procedure returns is of datatype image and contains a pdf in binary form.(this because the database is deployed on sql server 2000, otherwised i would choose a blob) When including the stored procedure in my linq class its generates that my pdf columns is datatype int in the designer class. I´ve work around the problem and manually changed the datatype in representation of the stored procedure in the designer class. But when adding/removing items in the linq class the designer file re-generates and my changes are lost. Are there any better solution for my problem??

• How can I compare Core Data models?

  I noticed while doing system testing that a feature of our app had been removed. It looks like at some point, an older version of a file was checked into SVN that was missing a property. This specific file was generated from the Core Data model, and sure enough, the latest version of the model in SVN is missing the same attribute. I need to find out if any other attributes are missing, or if anything else in the model changed. However, the elements file in the .xcodedatamodel folder appears to binary and I can't compare the revisions. Is there a way to find the differences between two Core Data models in SVN? Barring that, what would be the best way to accomplish this task?

  After saving a String value into memcached using the Danga client, I attempted to get the entry using the Spy client. The two String values are not the same. The Danga client retrieves a string with an additional empty char prepended to the string, therefore violating the equality condition.   Hi guys, What is the best approach to find if a given set(unsorted) is a perfect subset of a main set. I got to do some validation in my program where I got to compare the clients request set with the registered internal capability set. I thought of doing by having internal capability set sorted(will not change once registered) and do Binary search for each element in the client's request set. Is it the best I could get? • Problem with GCC calling static templates functions in templated parent class.

  I have some code that compiles and runs on MSVC++ but will not compile on GCC. I have made a test snippet that follows. My goal was to move the static method from BFSMask to BFSMaskSized. Can someone explain what is going on with the errors (esp. the weird 'operator<' error)? Thank you.   I created a console application in C# and running it on windows/.NET is 5x faster than on linux/mono or windows/mono. The app encodes some binary files into text format(JSON).   hi, i just have a few weeks programming with vc# (2008) and i'm trying to build an application (winforms) and i have the following problem... i need my application to work with and without connection to the mssql database, this sounds like piece of cake for our friend DataSet right? i can persist the data as XML or binary until i can reach the database and the DataSet will magically sync; all without bothering the user. The problem is... the few books i have read just mention that logic like a fairy tale but dont give any practical example of how to do it, can you point me to one example/demo/whatever i can read or download of an application with (equal or) similar logic?

  If I am able to start up Devel::Cover successfully and it starts to collect data in the cover_db directory, can I then kill the process and then after the fact get Devel::Cover or some other utility to process those binary Devel::Cover run files and structure files into the HTML coverage report?   My .ocx contains two ActiveX controls and I use both of them on one page. When user comes to page he gets two install confirmations for the same binary. After the first installation and page reload he gets one control displayed and “the website wants to run the following add-on...” yellow bar with control’s run confirmation for the other. I have only two possible solutions: Adding my CLSID’s to IE’s pre-approved control list, but I guess I cannot do it in the case of Non-Admin installation. Besides I consider this way as unreliable. Use the third control-container for hosting all other controls. It seems to my too complicated. Actually I’m not sure it can be done. Controls are used from the WEB, so I cannot use any administrative tools for installation. Is it possible to do all installation actions with one step without twice installation or run confirmation? Are there any “Best practices” for my case?

I even succeeded in sending JSon from the server to the client parsing it on Flex. I want to send AMF objects to the client. • Getting wierd issue with TO_NUMBER function in Oracle

  I have been getting an intermittent issue when executing to_number function in the where clause on a varchar2 column if number of records exceed a certain number n. I used n as there is no exact number of records on which it happens. On one DB it happens after n was 1 million on another when it was 0.1. million. E.g. I have a table with 10 million records say Table Country which has field1 varchar2 containing numberic data and Id If I do a query as an example select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 1 and id < 100000 This works But if i do the query select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 1 and id < 100001 It fails saying invalid number Next I try the query select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 2 and id < 100001 It works again As I only got invalid number it was confusing, but in the log file it said Memory Notification: Library Cache Object loaded into SGA Heap size 3823K exceeds notification threshold (2048K) KGL object name :with sqlplan as ( select c006 object_owner, c007 object_type,c008 object_name from htmldb_collections where COLLECTION_NAME='HTMLDB_QUERY_PLAN' and c007 in ('TABLE','INDEX','MATERIALIZED VIEW','INDEX (UNIQUE)')), ws_schemas as( select schema from wwv_flow_company_schemas where security_group_id = :flow_security_group_id), t as( select s.object_owner table_owner,s.object_name table_name, d.OBJECT_ID from sqlplan s,sys.dba_objects d It seems its related to SGA size, but google did not give me much help on this. • Seaching for an element in a circular sorted array

  I wanted to share this with you, i had this problem in a google interview. we want to search for a given element in a circular sorted array in complexity not greater than O(Log n). ex: search for 13 in {5,9,13,1,3}. My idea was to convert the circular array into a regular sorted array then do a binary search on the resulting array, but my problem was the algorithm i came up was stupid that it takes O(n) in the worst case: for(i = 1; i < a.length; i++){ if (a[i] < a[i-1]){ minIndex = i; break; } } then the corresponding index of ith element will be determined from the following relation: (i + minInex - 1) % a.length it is clear that my conversion (from circular to regular) algorithm may take O(n), so we need a better one, any suggestions?

  I'm trying to have classes serialized using MS runtime and Mono runtime. While using MS runtime everything goes fine, but using Mono I give me some exception and program startup. The following exception are thrown: There was an error reflecting a type: System.TypeInitializationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a type: System.InvalidOperationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a field: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException < 0 (an array of classes) The binary was compiled using MS SDK, but I don't think this is the problem. What's going on? .NET shouln't be portable? How to solve these exceptions?

This workflow looks like this: get xml feed go over every item in that feed, create a new ManagedObject for every feed item download some big binary data for every item and save it into ManagedObject call [managedObjectContext save:] Now, the problem is of course the performance - everything runs on the main thread. I'd like to re-factor as much as possible to another thread, but I'm not sure where I should start. Is it OK to put everything (1-4) to the separate thread?

• Converting Flash frame to JPEG

  We are attempting to convert a flash frame into a JPEG without using the Flex SDK or other adobe tools. Right now, we have a flash file that passes binary data over to a .cfm page, which uses the following code to change the headers: <cfset var = GetHttpRequestData()> <cfcontent type="image/jpeg"> <cfheader name="Content-Disposition" value="attachment; filename=#url.name#"> <cfoutput>#var.content#</cfoutput> This code is producing some strange results. Basically, it renders as an image, and I can "right click - Set as desktop background", but I cannot save the image any other way, as it simply saves the contents of the HTML Source. So, questions: 1) Is what I'm trying to do even possible? 2) If so, any suggestions? Thanks guys.

• Copying data from STDOUT to a remote machine using SFTP

  In order to backup large database partitions to a remote machine using SFTP, I'd like to use the databases dump command and send it directly over using SFTP to a remote location. This is useful when needing to dump large data sets when you don't have enough local disk space to create the backup file, and then copy it to a remote location. I've tried using python + paramiko which provides this functionality, but the performance much worse than using the native openssh/sftp binary to transfer files. Does anyone have any idea on how to do this either with the native sftp client on linux, or some library like paramiko? (but one that performs close to the native sftp client)?

  I'm frustrated to discover that Java lacks an acceptable solution for creating programs that will run via double-click. Other than .NET for Windows, what modern and high-level programming languages can I write code in that can be compiled for various platforms and run as a native/binary in each (Windows, Linux, OSX (optional)) Assuming I wanted to write code in python, for instance, is there a cohesive way that I could distribute my software which wouldn't require users to do anything special to get it to run? I want to write and distribute software for computer-illiterate and Java has turned out to be a real pain in this respect.

• Checkbox vs Two Radio Buttons - Which one is more usable?

  I'm currently working on some setting screens, most of which contain a 2 column form with a preference question on the left, and a form element on the right. The questions are things like: Can add/edit other users? Can delete clients? Obviously this setting is a binary setting and most UI "experts" would insist that a checkbox is the appropriate form element to use. However, when I mocked up the form with the checkboxes it looked unfriendly and it seemed hard to relate the state of the checkbox back to the question. I changed the form to use two radio buttons instead: Yes o No Personally I find this easier to process, as the options are actually answers to the question posed on the left. In terms of clicking it makes no difference to the user, it's a single click each time to change the setting. What do you think of this use of radio buttons? Is this better or worse than a checkbox and why?
