  • MPEG-2 playback inconsistent

    Many years ago I gave up on Linux because video playback was choppy. Now I'm back, and video playback is still playing up... I have two MPEG files: good.mpg bad.mpg. Here is some information about the two files, using avprobe: My machine is Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz x 2, 64-bit. I do not know what graphics card I have. I run Ubuntu 12.04. So far I have had no problems with YouTube and playback of various video files, including playback of the file good.mpg, included in the avprobe snapshot above. However, the file bad.mpg gives me headache! The file bad.mpg is produced by a respectable "Old-video-tapes-to-DVD" company. I converted over 10 Video-8 tapes to MPEG through them, and today I collected my hard drive containing the MPEG files. Unfortunately I have problem watching them! Here are some details: Using Totem Movie Player 3.0.1 works well for several seconds, then it gets choppy and the playback is not at all smooth. Also the player easily freezes for a while when trying to jump to another position in the file. Most strangely though, the total time is shown as 0:42 (42 seconds) instead of the true 00:39:11: The VLC media player is doing a better job. It shows the correct total length, but as soon as I jump in the video to a new position, it stalls. Playback also stalls after 30 seconds if I press play and leave it. Using Handbrake and choosing bad.mpg as the source, gives me: There is only one title to choose, and it is 6 min 53 seconds. I would have guessed the full 39 minutes of the video should have shown. Lastly, putting the file bad.mpg in Dropbox and viewing it on my iPad with the Dropbox app seems fine (disregard the lack of easy jumping forward due to real-time encoding when streaming it). My question is simple: What is going on?! Why do I have problem to play the MPEG-2 files I just paid good money for (the issue with bad.mpg applies to all files I had encoded)? Is it an issue with my particular Linux machine? The graphics card? But why has everything worked fine so far, and why does not the good.mpg file cause any problems?

    If you have kids and macs and you use Parental Controls, for the moment don't upgrade to 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, the feature is broken after upgrading. I had to disable parental control completely on my daughters' macs in the meantime... After hundreds of parents have complained about problems in this discussion thread on Apple's forums, finally the tech press notices:  First There Was Apple's MapGate, Now Welcome ParentGate For the moment there doesn't seem to be a workaround. Ugh.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 : menu bar started to appear on window

    I had some broken package problems, and had to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, libqtgui4 and some other system packages. Since then, "some" of my applications are showing menu bar within the window, like this: Some windows like Emacs, vlc are showing such menu bar, while others are working fine (nautilus, terminal still have menu bar on the unity top panel). Is there a way to get it back to the Unity panel?

    Gamification and Enterprise Applications In part 1 of this article, we explored why people are motivated to play games so much. Now, let's think about what that means for Oracle applications user experience. (Even the coffee is gamified. Acknowledgement @noelruane. Applying game dynamics (gamification) effectively in the enterprise applications space to reflect business objectives is now a hot user experience topic. Consider, for example, how such dynamics could solve applications users’ problems such as: Becoming familiar or expert with an application or process Building loyalty, customer satisfaction, and branding relationships Collaborating effectively and populating content in the community Completing tasks or solving problems on time Encouraging teamwork to achieve goals Improving data accuracy and completeness of entry Locating and managing the correct resources or information Managing changes and exceptions Setting and reaching targets, quotas, or objectives Games’ Incentives, Motivation, and Behavior I asked Julian Orr, Senior Usability Engineer, in the Oracle Fusion Applications CRM User Experience (UX) team for his thoughts on what potential gamification might offer Oracle Fusion Applications. Julian pointed to the powerful incentives offered by games as the starting place: “The biggest potential for gamification in enterprise apps is as an intrinsic motivator. Mechanisms include fun, social interaction, teamwork, primal wiring, adrenaline, financial, closed-loop feedback, locus of control, flow state, and so on. But we need to know what works best for a given work situation.” For example, in CRM service applications, we might look at the motivations of typical service applications users (see figure 1) and then determine how we can 'gamify' these motivations with techniques to optimize the desired work behavior for the role (see figure 2).   • Using RTL languages with MS Office in Wine 1.4

    I've installed MS Office 2007 in Ubuntu 12.04 using Wine 1.4 with no problems, and it works fine with the English Language. However, I need to use it to work with Arabic and Hebrew, and it doesn't work when I switch to a Hebrew or Arabic keyboard. The typing gets reversed. I saw an earlier post for something similar, but it is closed and I think it was for the earlier Wine 1.3. Supposedly Wine 1.4 has added RTL -- is there a way to get it working?

  • Firefox Slow down and 100% CPU after gnome-settings-deamon update

    I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity) with Firefox 17.0.1 instaled. after the latest update of the gnome-settings-deamon (3.4.2-0ubuntu0.5,3.4.2-0ubuntu0.6) FireFox starts taking 100% of my CPU, periodically. I have tried various things: 1) Disabled All the non standard extensions = No change to the CPU Usage 2) Disabled Flash PlugIns (also updated same time) = No change to CPU Usage 3) Disabled "Global Menu integration 3.6.4) Extension = HOOOA CPU OK !!! Any suggestion to get back global menu integration with no more CPU problems?

  • When to skip solving the general problem and settling for the specific problem?

    I've been working hard on trying to develop a general solution to my problem, but I cannot seem to formulate a proper algorithm for it, at least one that doesn't take a ton of inaccurate grunt work building a lookup table. I have a solution already for the specific requirement, but it requires the software's configuration to be changed every time the software is loaded with a different geographic area's datasets. So is it better to be finished and move on for now, or to keep attempting to solve the general problem knowing that the specific problems will keep popping up?
